Like father, like son.

Twenty-seven years after his father, Matt Holliday, was drafted by the Rockies in the seventh round of the 1998 MLB draft, Ethan Holliday was taken by Colorado with the fourth pick of the 2025 MLB draft.

One of the most talented prospects in this year's draft, Ethan fell to the No. 4 pick, allowing him to play for the same team his dad started and ended his career with.

"This is a really incredible opportunity," Holliday said on MLB Network. "I'm so driven by faith, I'm so grateful. The Lord has really been the centerpiece of my life. I don't even know what words I can put to this. The Rockies organization, I'm so thankful, obviously with the family, the background, and my dad being drafted by them, that just adds such a cool thing. Knowing everyone in the organization since I was born, I'm just so grateful."

Ethan was born in 2007, ahead of his dad's fourth season in the majors and second straight All-Star season. That proved to be a lucky year for Matt, who went on to lead the National League in batting average and RBIs before claiming the MVP award that season.

Matt spent five seasons with the Rockies to begin his career, andEthan adorably got to know the organization he will now play for early on as a baby. Matt would go on to play for the Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees—winning a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011—before returning to spend his final MLB season in Colorado.

Now, Matt's sons are carrying on his legacy. His eldest son, Jackson, was the No. 1 pick by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2022 MLB draft. He has another son that was a top-five draft pick in Ethan, who will also got to play for his former team.

The Seattle Mariners were able to edge the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-0, on Saturday night, but the score could have been a little different if the home plate umpire hadn't made such a bad call in the third inning.

Seattle had two runners on with two outs when Randy Arozarena was struck out on a 3-2 pitch that looked to be well out of the strike zone. Instead of the bases becoming loaded, the inning came to an end, leaving the game tied at 0-0.

Mariners announcer Aaron Goldsmith didn't hold back on the umpire, Chris Guccione, saying: "Oooh, that is not a good call! Arozarena rung up on ball four."

That's another rough look for an ump, which there have been plenty of so far this season.

The Mariners were still able to improve to 47-42 on the year and sit seven games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West.

ويستعد منتخب مصر للمشاركة في بطولة كأس أمم إفريقيا، والتي ستنطلق يوم 21 من شهر ديسمبر الجاري بالمغرب، إلى 18 يناير 2026، بمشاركة 24 منتخبًا.

ويقع منتخب مصر في بطولة كأس أمم إفريقيا، في المجموعة الثانية مع منتخبات زيمبابوي وأنجولا وجنوب إفريقيا.

The Detroit Tigers limped out of the gate following this week's All-Star break, dropping its first two games at the Texas Rangers by a combined score of 6–1. The first-place team had struggled entering the break as well, dropping four consecutive games to the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners before the break. With Sunday night's game featured on the national ESPN broadcast, the Tigers handed the ball to Tarik Skubal for his first start since he toed the rubber to begin the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

Detroit's ace didn't disappoint.

Skubal had some of his best stuff, striking out 11 Rangers across 6.2 innings, allowing four hits but no walks. After he departed in the bottom of the seventh inning, with two runners on base and 105 pitches under his belt, the Tigers surrendered their only run of the game on a wild pitch by reliever Tyler Holton—an unearned run to Skubal's ledger that nevertheless stripped him of his ability to pick up the win. Detroit would respond in the next frame, taking a 2–1 lead on a Matt Vierling RBI single that would stand up, as Holton and Will Vest combined to close out the rest of the game.

Skubal had struggled a bit in his last outing before the break, allowing four earned runs in five innings in a 12–3 Tigers loss to the Mariners. He wasn't sharp in his All-Star Game start either, allowing two runs in his one inning of work.

Sunday's game showed just how nasty Skubal is at his best, though, and fans tuning in to the national broadcast were as blown away as the 11 Texas batters he fanned on the day. The stats back up just how dominant he's been as well.

The Tigers move to 60–40 on the season with the win, and are the first team in baseball to reach the 60-win mark.

As part of a Golden Generation which proved to be incredibly disappointing, Steven Gerrard has now revealed where his England side went wrong and why he “hated” international duty.

Who was part of England's Golden Generation?

To this day, it beggars belief that a generation involving Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and so much more failed to ever win a trophy. From goal-line controversy in the 2010 World Cup to Rooney’s stamp on Cristiano Ronaldo in 2006, there’s far more moments to forget than there are to savour, but how many stars did this generation really have?

To put into context just how many talented players England had at their disposal in the 2000s, their starting line-up when they crashed out against Portugal on penalties in 2006 included Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard, Owen Hargreaves, Ashley Cole, John Terry, David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Rooney. It couldn’t have got much better than that.

Alas, silverware never arrived and the failure of that generation remains one of England’s greatest regrets. It makes the task of the current generation even greater, too.

Whilst the 2000s featured Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Beckham and others, the 2026 World Cup squad is likely to feature Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden. Once again, the pressure is on.

Whether the Three Lions have learned from their mistakes at Euro 2024, which saw them lose against Spain in the final late on, or from their mistakes at the 2022 World Cup, where they crashed out in the semi-final against France, is the big question.

The Golden Generation never quite learned and many have had their say as to why that proved to be the case, including Gerrard. The former England captain has now revealed where his side went wrong and why he “hated” international duty.

Gerrard slams "egotistical losers" in England generation

Speaking about England’s failiure to use the Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard trio, Gerrard dubbed the Golden Generation “egotistical losers” and said he “hated” England duty because of the divide in the camp between club rivals.

The former midfielder said: “I hated it. I didn’t enjoy it. Hated the [hotel] rooms. In my early days, I’d have days where I was down, like low down. Like I’m in this room for seven hours, what am I going to do.

“There was no social media, we didn’t have a DVD player or anything. Channel 1 to 5 or whatever it was on TV. I used to get low and down.

“I used to love the games.

“I used to love playing for England. I was really proud. I used to enjoy the training sessions but it was 90 minutes a day. And then I was just on my own. I didn’t feel part of a team. I didn’t feel connected with my team-mates with England.

“I didn’t feel that with Liverpool. They were the best days of my life. I felt like the staff looked over me, like I felt special. I felt like I couldn’t wait to get there. With England, I just wanted the games and the training sessions and then to be away.”

Are Arsenal now ready to bring the biggest trophies back to North London?

On Tuesday night, the Gunners sent out a serious statement by smashing Atlético Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League, all the goals coming during a 12-minute second-half scoring spree.

New striker Viktor Gyökeres scored twice, easing some of the pressure on his shoulders, while fellow summer signing Martín Zubimendi put in another eye-catching display.

Thus, the additions made this summer have elevated Mikel Arteta’s team to another level, but is balance one of the under-the-radar reasons why the Gunners have found red-hot form of late?

Arsenal's right-sided bias

During their previous title challenges, a high proportion of Arsenal’s attacks have come down their right flank.

The Gunners’ peak form under Arteta came during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, winning 16 of 18 Premier League matches, with the Benjamin White, Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka attacking trident down the right-hand side, by some distance, their most dangerous outlet.

As documented by the Athletic, the most common combination would see White overlapping, thereby making space for Saka, with Ødegaard’s primary task to find one or the other, this functioning thanks to White’s ‘energetic and well-timed runs’ alongside Ødegaard’s ‘exquisite passing’ as well as Saka’s ‘dribbling ability [which] forces teams to double up on him’

Meantime, the Telegraph outlined that a whopping 45% of their attacks last season came down the right flank, up from 38% and 41% the previous two campaigns, making this a clear pattern across an elongated period of time, something they describe as an issue when the opposition are able to nullify this.

We could have included dozens of goals to demonstrate the threat Arsenal pose down their right-hand side, but Kai Havertz’s late winner against Brentford in March 2024 illustrates it nicely.

Now, recent acquisitions have made Arteta’s team significantly more balanced, no longer solely reliant on some Saka magic, while neither White nor Ødegaard have featured particularly much, for various reasons, so far this season.

Thus, Arteta has reshaped his left side, so has this become equally as effective?

Where once Oleksandr Zinchenko stood as Arsenal’s marauding left-back, Riccardo Calafiori is the current occupant of that position.

The Italian has started all eight Premier League games so far, paradoxically described as both ”defensively very solid’ and “the most electrifying man in sports entertainment” following last weekend’s 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

As the table notes, amazingly, only Gyökeres has attempted more shots among Arsenal players in the Premier League this season, while the Italian is contributing across all areas of the pitch, including the fact he’s second only to Declan Rice in terms of ball recoveries.

However, as White can testify from the other flank, a full-back going forward is only as good as the players he has in front of him, so could Eberechi Eze be that man for Calafiori?

Right now, the England international is being deployed more towards the right, deputising for Ødegaard, with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, both of whom have scored crucial goals this week, time-sharing on the left flank.

Nevertheless, Eze’s natural tendency is to drift to the left, something he’s having to fight against at the moment.

Thus, analyst Ben Mattinson posited back in 2024 that the pair could be something of a “left-sided White and Saka”, noting that there are “a lot of similarities”, adding that Calafiori is a “better carrier” and Eze is “creative”, concluding that this could be enough to fire Arsenal to the Premier League title.

The man who arrived from Crystal Palace, too much excitement, in August notched his third assist for Arsenal on Tuesday, setting up the first of Gyökeres’ two goals, while he himself opened his Gunners account at Port Vale in the EFL Cup last month.

As Arteta searches for more central creativity, Eze has regularly been deployed through the middle so far, but has started on the left too.

The best example of what he is capable of from a wider position came against Nottingham Forest, bursting in behind to get on the end of a driven ball over the top by, you guessed it, Calafiori, before squaring it for Gyökeres to tap home.

This goal could prove to be just an amuse bouche of what this £110m pair are able to contribute this season so, if Arsenal’s left side becomes anywhere near as potent as their right, supporters have every reason to believe that this genuinely could be their year.

علق أحمد حسن، مدير منتخب مصر الثاني، على الخروج من كأس العرب 2025، من دور المجموعات بعد خوض 3 مباريات.

وفشل منتخب مصر في التأهل من دور المجموعات، بعدما حقق تعادلين وخسارة ليحتل المركز الثالث في المجموعة ويودع مبكرًا.

وقال أحمد حسن في تصريحات لبرنامج “الكابتن” على قناة “دي إم سي”: “دائمًا نتحمل المسؤولية ولا نهرب من المواقف الصعبة، لأن مثل ما تعودتوا علينا،، كنا رجالًا ومخلصين في الملعب وحققنا نجاحات كثيرة لمنتخبنا ولكل الأندية اللي لعبت لها”.

وتابع: “يجب على الناس أن تفهم ما في الكواليس، لا توجد مشكلة في الانتقاد لأن في وقت من الأوقات عندما ننتقد يكون للصالح العام وليس للأغراض الشخصية”.

وأضاف: “من حق الناس أن تحزن، وأنا أيضًا حزين وأقدم آلاف الاعتذارات فقط بسبب حزن الناس، حقهم ونتقبل ذلك، لكن هناك بعض الناس المغرضين الذين يتعمدون الإساءة لنا وليس للصالح العام”.

وكشف: “أوجه الشكر للجهاز الفني والإداري والطبي الذي عمل في وقت صعب جدًا، حيث تم تكوين المنتخب قبل البطولة بثلاثة أشهر، وننافس كل المنتخبات الأولى حتى منتخبات شمال إفريقيا لديهم صف ثاني وثالث، إنما انت قبل البطولة تقول لي نريد منتخب يكون متواجدًا في البطولة، المسألة كانت صعبة، أشكر الناس لأنها تستحق الشكر، حيث اجتهدت وأخلصت وحاولت”.

وأردف: “حلمي طولان لم يحاول التنصل من المسؤولية، ومن المهم أن نفهم كيف تم تشكيل الجهاز الفني للمنتخب الثاني، فبعض المغرضين ادعوا أن هاني أبو ريدة هو من أتى بهذا الجهاز نكاية في حسام حسن، وهذا غير صحيح تمامًا”.

وأوضح: “كانت هناك لجنة فنية اجتمعت وناقشت الأمر، وأشارت إلى أن أمامنا بطولة كأس العرب، وأنه من المفترض أن يشارك فيها المنتخب الأول، ولكن لانشغاله بكأس أمم إفريقيا، تم اقتراح تشكيل منتخب ثان للمشاركة في البطولة العربية”.

وواصل: “وخلال اجتماعات اللجنة الفنية التي تضم أسماء كبيرة، فوجئت بتصريح محسن صالح الذي قال إن اللجنة لم تختر حلمي طولان، طرحنا عدة أسماء، لكن لم يكن هناك مدرب واحد مستعد لقبول مهمة لمدة ثلاثة أشهر فقط وسط مخاطرة كبيرة، عندها اقترح علاء نبيل اسم حلمي طولان، والذي كان في البداية رافضًا 7 للمهمة”.

وأكمل: “وما كنت أتمناه في ذلك الوقت هو أن يقود المنتخب الثاني أحد مساعدي حسام حسن في كأس العرب، تحت قيادة العميد، لضمان وجود تنسيق كامل بين الجميع، لكن ذلك لم يحدث”.

وواصل: “كان هناك غياب واضح في التنسيق، ولم يظهر المنتخب بالمستوى المطلوب، نحن نحترم حلمي طولان ونشكره على قبوله المهمة، خاصة أنه انضم بعد المعسكر الثاني، وكان على وشك الاعتذار عندما علم بعدم تأجيل المباريات، وكان لم يتبق سوى شهر على انطلاق بطولة كأس العرب”.

وأشار: “هاني أبو ريدة كلف طولان بالمهمة مع التأكيد على ضرورة التعاون، وكانت الأولوية دائما للمنتخب الأول، ولم تكن لدينا مشكلة في ذلك، بدأنا في جمع اللاعبين، واعتمدنا على سبعة أو ثمانية لاعبين من بيراميدز شاركوا في المعسكرين الأول والثاني، لكن عدم تأجيل مباراتين للفريق جعل هؤلاء اللاعبين غير متاحين فجأة، وهو ما أثر على القوام الأساسي للمنتخب الثاني”.

وواصل تصريحاته كاشفا: “الأسماء التي كنا نعتمد عليها من بيراميدز، هم، أحمد الشناوي، محمود جاد، أحمد سامي، محمود مرعي، كريم حافظ، قطة، زلاكا، ومروان حمدي، وغيابهم أربك الحسابات تمامًا، كنا ننتظر اللاعبين الذين لن يتم اختيارهم للمنتخب الأول، مثل طاهر محمد طاهر وأحمد نبيل كوكا، لكنهما كانا ضمن قائمة المنتخب الأول بالفعل”.

وأشار: “للأسف، لم يكن هناك تعاون كاف من رابطة الأندية، وكان يجب أن نذهب إلى كأس العرب بشكل أكثر جاهزية، ومع ذلك، أعتز بوجودي ضمن الجهاز الفني، ولكن هذه كانت الإمكانات المتاحة، ومن المؤسف أن يقلل البعض من حجم الظروف التي واجهناها”.

واختتم: “إذا أردنا التطور، فيجب إنشاء منتخب محليين يشارك في البطولات الإفريقية مثل المغرب والجزائر وتونس، ويكون رافدا أساسيا للمنتخب الأول، على أن يشرف المدير الفني للمنتخب الأول عليه مع مدرب مساعد مقيم، هذه حلول يمكن أن نستفيد منها مستقبلا”.
