Pietersen century wraps up series for England

Kevin Pietersen struck his first ODI century in more than three years as England sealed the series against Pakistan with a nine-wicket win

Kevin Pietersen was captain of England when he struck his last hundred in a one-day international. It sounds so long ago that it might have belonged to a different world. In some ways it did.As the England coach left Cuttack that night he could hardly have imagined what lay in wait. A major terrorist attack on Mumbai was already underway and was about to force the postponement of England’s tour of India. After England returned for a Test series played under heavy security, his relationship with the coach Peter Moores broke down irrevocably and both men lost their jobs.It is a history that has played heavily upon him. Pietersen toyed for a while, nobody quite knows how seriously, with abandoning one-day cricket as his star began to wane. It has taken three years, three months and 37 ODIs to draw a line and when he walked down the pitch in his audacious style of old, and flicked Aizaz Cheema through the leg side, the intervening years seemed more aptly summed up not by his routine kneel and punch of the air as a slightly rueful raise of the eyebrows. It is no longer Pietersen’s one-day side now but Alastair Cook’s, and it was perhaps appropriate that his batting renaissance contributed to Cook’s achievement in leading England to a rare one-day series victory in Asia. England now hold an unassailable 3-0 lead with one match to play and a nine-wicket victory with 12.4 overs remaining, fashioned by an opening stand between Cook and Pietersen of 170, could hardly have been more emphatic. Whitewashed in the Test series against Pakistan, they will now be bent upon returning the favour in the final match in the same stadium on Tuesday.Cook’s only regret will be that he narrowly failed to become the first England batsman to make hundreds in three consecutive ODIs. He had reached 80 when he pushed gently forward at the off-spin of Saeed Ajmal and gave Adnan Akmal a faint catch. Cook had again been in unruffled form, his cut shot more to the fore than it had been in Abu Dhabi on a quicker batting surface, but his exit cleared the way for Pietersen to claim the limelight. This has been an opening partnership assembled partly through adversity as Pietersen looked forward to a few sighters against the fast bowlers after a traumatic Test series against Pakistan’s spinners. It now looks bedded in and that coud spell trouble for Craig Kieswetter, whose keeping has been patchy – he dropped Umar on 28 off Broad – and whose range is too limited to convince as a No. 6 in Asia.Pietersen’s habitual pre-match claim that he was in “fantastic” form was backed up by adventurous footwork and flowing strokeplay. He passed 4,000 runs in ODIs in spectacular fashion as he danced down the pitch to strike the offspin of Mohammad Hafeez over the sightscreen for six.He was dropped on 45 when a fierce, flat pull against Aizaz Cheema smacked into the body of the onrushing Azhar Ali at deep square. That apart, his most awkward moments came against the Akmal brothers. Adnan, who had replaced his brother Umar behind the stumps, ill-advisedly tried to run Pietersen out after he had tapped the ball back to him, and apologised. Umar tried to run him out more legimately only for the ball to ricochet off the stumps and career away for five overthrows.Smart stats

This is the 11th occasion that England have achieved an ODI win by a margin of nine of more wickets and the first time they have won by such a margin against Pakistan. The target of 223, however, is the highest achieved by England in nine and ten-wicket wins.

The target of 223 is the highest achieved by any team in a nine or ten-wicket win against Pakistan. West Indies and South Africa are the only other teams to chase 200-plus targets against Pakistan and win by nine or ten-wicket margins.

Kevin Pietersen became the seventh England batsman to reach the 4000-run mark in ODIs. Among England players with 4000-plus runs, Pietersen has the best average (41.60) and the joint second-highest number of centuries (8).

Pietersen’s century is his first in ODIs since the 111 against India in Cuttack in November 2008. In 38 matches in between the two centuries, Pietersen scored just 896 runs at 24.88 with three half-centuries.

Alastair Cook became the third England batsman in the last two years, after Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott, to make three fifty-plus scores in a bilateral ODI series. Pietersen leads the list with four fifty-plus scores against South Africa in 2004.

The 170-run opening stand between Cook and Pietersen is England’s highest against Pakistan and their seventh-highest overall. It is also the fifth-highest opening stand in ODIs played in the UAE.

Since their 3-0 win against West Indies in 2007, Pakistan have gone on to lose four of their five series (three-plus matches) played in the UAE.

The number of deliveries remaining at the end of the win (76) is the third-highest for England when they have scored over 200 in successful ODI chases.

A sandstorm had disrupted the practice day and when the Kaus – meaning “bow” in Arabic – a vigorous south-westerly off the desert, cleared in the nick of time it revealed the same flaky Pakistan top order. They lost three wickets in 15 balls to slump to 50 for 4 before Umar, his lips daubed in luminous green sun cream, and the ageing swinger Shahid Afridi, who needs no war paint to convey his belligerence, summoned half-centuries to keep Pakistan in the match.Umar’s last two dismissals have taken Samit Patel’s fielding reputation to new heights. In Abu Dhabi and Dubai, on off side and leg side, he has flung himself to the ground to hold an excellent catch. He knows that his fitness remains borderline – if you enquire innocently about the weather there is every chance he will reply “chicken and salad”, and guiltily wipe the trace of an imaginary beef burger from his lips – but he is a decent cricketer and should be seriously considered to bat No. 6 for England in the Sri Lanka Test series.Afridi was at his most restrained: that is he gambolled along at only a run a ball. He began in haywire fashion but then played responsibly, a straight six off Graeme Swann’s offspin his most emphatic moment. Like Umar, he fell soon after reaching his half-century, bowled by James Anderson as he whipped to leg.For the third successive match, Finn pronounced himself as fine a young fast bowler as anyone in the world. He took two wickets with the new ball, bowling straight and finding steep bounce at close to 90mph. He finished with 3 for 24, taking his series’ tally to 11 wickets at 8.36 runs each.Pakistan had won 13 ODIs out of 14 going into this series and had also whitewashed England 3-0 in the Test series, but such statistics seemed from another age. The loss of Imran Farhat, caught at the wicket as he struggled to cope with Finn’s hostility, seemed a blip. But Stuart Broad caused Azhar Ali to flirt with one outside off stump, Mohammad Hafeez was lbw to an inducker from Finn and Misbah-ul-Haq dangled his bat at Broad to edge to first slip.Broad conceded 16 from his first over, his mood not enhanced by a no-ball that prevented him from dismissing Azhar to a catch by Eoin Morgan at gully. His interrogation of the umpire Aleem Dar was borne out of frustration, but it looked disrespectful. Broad does not need sand stinging his face to become a bit irascible; a ball in his hands normally does the trick.Shafiq’s first run would have brought his downfall if Pietersen’s flat throw had hit the target and he did not learn his lesson. He was unsettled by Swann’s lbw appeal as the ball ran into the legside and had to dive back into the crease as Cook threw the ball to the wicketkeeper, Kieswetter, but the third umpire, Kumar Dharmasena, ruled that his bat was not grounded behind the line. It summed up Pakistan’s day.

Cook and Foster seal Essex chase

James Foster and Matt Walker put together a thrilling unbeaten century stand tocarry Essex to a superb seven-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire in theirClydesdale Bank 40 clash at Chelmsford

01-May-2011
Scorecard
James Foster and Matt Walker put together a thrilling unbeaten century stand tocarry Essex to a superb seven-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire in theirClydesdale Bank 40 clash at Chelmsford.Replying to a total of 287 for 7, Essex reached their objective with anover to spare as Foster and Walker shared in a partnership of 108 in 10.3overs.Foster plundered 66 from 44 balls, with the help of seven fours and astraight-driven six against Ben Phillips that sealed victory.Walker contributed 45 from 26 deliveries, with the aid of seven boundaries. The efforts of the third-wicket pair came after Alastair Cook had provided apersuasive argument for being included in England’s side in the longer versionof the limited-overs format.Cook has made no secret of the fact that he was disappointed to beleft out of the recent World Cup squad and pressed his claims with a fine 96from 102 deliveries. His innings included 13 fours, and it was while seeking his 14th with aleg-side pull that he was bowled by Luke Fletcher. Most of Cook’s runs came during a second-wicket stand of 110 in 18 overs withRavi Bopara, another player hoping to win the nod from England’s selectors.Bopara did his cause no harm at all by making 50 from 39 balls, an effort thatcontained three sixes in addition to a couple of fours. His innings was brought to an end by spinner Samit Patel as Neil Edwards took acatch in front of the sidescreen. The assault from the Essex batsmen came after Notts opener Alex Hales had puttogether a punishing 116 to carry the visitors to their formidable total. He scored those runs from 101 balls, and on the way laced his innings with adozen fours and three sixes before he skied a catch to Adam Wheater in thecovers.Hales had earlier taken part in a partnership of 124 in 17 overs with Patel, whose 69 from 51 deliveries included 12 boundaries. While they were together, Notts had looked set to post a much more imposingtotal after reaching 150 at the halfway stage. But they were pegged back by left-arm spinner Tim Phillips, who conceded just34 in his seven overs. Bopara, with his medium pace, also played a part in putting the breaks on, with figures of two for 40 in eight overs.Lonwabo Tsotsobe had the satisfaction of claiming the wicket of Hales and laterthat of Chris Read. But the South African’s line and length left much to be desired as he conceded73 in his eight overs.

Hussey ready for his 'dream come true'

Michael Hussey has said that his fortuitous call-up to the World Cup squad was a “dream come true” and is confident that his hamstring will withstand the rigours of one-day cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2011Michael Hussey has said that his fortuitous call-up to the World Cup squad was a “dream come true” and is confident that his hamstring will withstand the rigours of one-day cricket as Australia pursue their fourth consecutive title. Dirk Nannes, on the other hand, who is travelling to the subcontinent as a standby player, is unsure of his role but wants to make the most of his opportunity.”Just going is a bit of a dream come true, but to actually be there as part of a winning Australian team would be out of this world, so let’s hope,” Hussey told reporters in Perth. “I’ve had lots of messages from the boys already so I’m just excited to get over there really.”Hussey was informed of his selection during the tea break of the Sheffield Shield match between Western Australia and Queensland at the WACA on Sunday. He had been part of the initial World Cup squad, but was replaced by Callum Ferguson before the tournament began after sustaining a hamstring injury that needed surgery. Hussey’s opportunity arose when Doug Bollinger was injured in India.Hussey scored only 19 and 11 against Queensland but he said the time spent on the field had given him confidence. “The first innings I fielded in the slips for the whole innings so I didn’t really have to test it [hamstring] too much but in the second innings the selectors actually did want me to have a bit of a run around in the field,” Hussey said. “So I spoke to Northy [Marcus North] and said ‘do you mind if I have a run in the outfield? And the more I was out and on it the better it felt and the more confidence I got with it.”It would have been nice to score more runs, but just to be out there playing the game you love again is what it’s all about. Just knowing I can get through the game and know I can go full of confidence with the leg, that gives me a lot of confidence as well.”Australia have made a strong start to the World Cup, winning their first two matches before their game against Sri Lanka was washed out in Colombo. “We’ve got to be a great chance,” Hussey said. “A confident Australian team is always very hard to beat so hopefully we can keep building that confidence and be right there at the business end of the tournament.”While Hussey is likely to slot in the middle order straightaway, Nannes will not be available for selection unless another player in Australia’s squad gets injured. Nannes said he was surprised to get the call from the selectors. “It’s certainly unexpected, I was just having fun on the farm on the weekend and got the phone call,” Nannes said in Melbourne. “I’m rapt to be going over, I’m not really sure what sort of role I’m going to play.”Relying on any injuries is not the best situation to be in, I guess, but at least I’ve been given some sort of opportunity. I’m excited about what may be, I will prepare myself to carry bags well and make good drinks, that’s about all I can do.”I was a bit miffed earlier in the year when I wasn’t in the Twenty20 squad and I was a bit miffed, I guess, not being in the original [World Cup] 30,” he said. “I guess that’s the lot of a cricketer, you have selection problems and then the highs that come with it, that’s just part of being a sportsman. I’ve never been part of the one-day setup and the way that operates, I’ve never been under Ricky Ponting, so it will be massively beneficial to my cricket.”

Tuffey replaces McKay in Test squad

Daryl Tuffey, the New Zealand fast bowler, has been included in the squad for the two-Test series against Pakistan, starting Friday

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jan-2011Daryl Tuffey, the New Zealand fast bowler, has been included in the squad for the two-Test series against Pakistan, starting Friday. He takes the place of Wellington fast bowler Andy McKay, who hasn’t recovered fully from a side strain.Tuffey played the last of his 26 Tests during the home series against Australia last March. He has played only four Tests in the last six-and-a-half years but is a more regular member of New Zealand’s one-day side. Tuffey had missed much of the one-day series against India last month due to a bicep strain.New Zealand’s fast bowling department has been hit hard by injuries in recent times. Hamish Bennett, who impressed with his pace on Test debut against India in early November, suffered a groin strain in that match and hasn’t played high-level cricket since. McKay is back to bowling, but isn’t fit enough for the sustained spells required in Test matches. The other fast bowlers in the New Zealand Test squad, which was announced two weeks ago, are Chris Martin, Tim Southee, Brent Arnel and allrounder James Franklin.

WAPDA go top with innings victory

Round-up of the third day of the fifth round of Division One of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2010Water and Power Development Authority have gone clear of Habib Bank Limited at the top of the table after an innings and 82-run victory over Karachi Blues at the National Stadium in Karachi. WAPDA had won their prior two matches in just two days, and needed just 38.1 overs on day three, this time, to bowl Karachi out for 189 in their second innings. WAPDA captain Naved-ul-Hasan took 4 for 54 to take his match-haul to eight wickets, while seamer Umaid Asif finished with figures of 3 for 62 in the second innings. WAPDA had shown their intentions of winning the match early after declaring on Tuesday, 271 runs ahead. Karachi started the day on 19 for 1, and lost wickets consistently, their tail finally capitulating as the final four wickets fell for nine runs. Karachi opener Rameez Raja managed to hold up one end for a while, scoring 58, but the next highest scorer was extras with 25, as Karachi did little to improve their first innings batting performance, which saw them get 128. Karachi are just three points off the foot of the table.Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited suffered a dramatic collapse as they fell to 57 all out, giving Islamabad a 73-run victory at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. Islamabad seamer Nasrullah Khan took 7 for 31 to finish with ten wickets for the match, and Rauf Akbar chipped in with the other three wickets for Islamabad. SNGPL started the day on top and got Islamabad’s last wicket without too much damage, leaving themselves a target of 130. The match had been a low-scoring affair till the third morning, with neither team having gone past the 200-mark in their first innings. SNGPL lost three early wickets, but a 20-run sixth-wicket stand put them in with a chance at 53 for 5. Nasrullah, though, ripped through the tail as SNGPL’s last five wickets fell for four runs. The win gave Islamabad six points, which takes them up to sixth in the table, just one place behind SNGPL.Multan’s dismal season continued, as Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited consigned them to their fifth consecutive defeat, at the Multan Cricket Stadium. ZTBL neded just 28 overs on the third day to complete the nine-wicket win, after having reduced Multan to 149 for 7 on Tuesday. Multan at least forced ZTBL to bat again as debutant Mazhar Bashir scored 71 off 77 balls, to set target of 40. ZTBL seamer Iftikhar Anjum, who has played 62 ODIs for Pakistam, took Multan’s last two wickets to finish with four for the innings and six for the match. ZTBL are now level on points with Habib Bank Limited in second position. The run-fest at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha continued as Faisalabad moved to within 35 runs of National Bank of Pakistan’s first-innings total of 467, with five wickets still in hand. Faisalabad look set to pick up their first points of the season as Asif Hussain’s unbeaten 149 took them within touching distance of a first-innings lead. Faisalabad had responded well to NBP’s big score, reaching 151 for 0 on Tuesday. And, after a couple of wickets fell early on the third day, Hussain held fort, batting through the rest of the day, and adding 90 runs for the fourth wicket with Faisalabad captain Naved Latif. The hosts’ strong reply means that Kamran Akmal’s double-century for NBP in their first innings may go rewardless.Rawalpindi seamers Rizwan Akbar and Nasir Malik set up what should be an upset against Habib Bank Ltd at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Akbar and Malik had shared seven wickets to bowl out HBL for 164 on Tuesday, and repeated the dose on the third day of the match, taking three scalps apiece to reduce HBL to 265 for 8 after the hosts had enforced the follow on. HBL are now just 39 runs ahead, and barring a miraculous recovery by their tail, Rawalpindi should have a fairly easy chase tomorrow. Malik and Akbar followed a similar formula to HBL’s first innings, with Akbar getting the early wickets, and then Malik coming in to dismantle the middle-order. Aftab Alam and Khaqan Raja got half-centuries for HBL, but there was little back-up from the rest.Sialkot got their foot in the door against Pakistan International Airlines, taking four wickets in the last session, after PIA had done well to dismiss the hosts for 274 in their first innings. Sialkot’s opening bowlers, debutant Waqas Ahmed and Prince Abbas, struck early in PIA’s second innings, reducing them to 3 for 2 at one stage. Ahmed struck again, as did fast bowler Mohammad Abbas, to leave PIA at 55 for 4 at stumps. PIA’s first innings total of 388 means they have a 169-run lead, and Faisalabad will need to strike early tomorrow to make sure they don’t have to chase too much. Sialkot had started the third day at the Jinnah Stadium at 142 for 3, and PIA seamer Ali Imran and Shoaib Malik, the former Pakistan captain, took four wicket each to get them out for 274.

Celtic: O’Riley disappointed against Dundee

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side went into Sunday’s fixture against Dundee knowing that a win would see them extend their lead at the top of the Premiership table, as their Glasgow rivals had dropped two points away at Dundee United earlier in the day.

And, despite falling behind to the team sitting bottom of the top-flight in the first half of the fixture, as well as the Dark Blues drawing level in the second half after Giorgos Giakoumakis had given the hosts the lead with a quickfire double shortly before the break, the Greek international’s completion of his hattrick in the 86th minute ultimately proved enough for Celtic to get over the line – with the game finishing 3-2 in the Hoops’ favour.

However, as is perhaps to be expected after such a close run encounter against an outfit who have picked up just 21 points so far this season, a number of the Bhoys players were far from their best on Saturday, with Daizen Maeda – despite a tireless performance on the left-wing – proving wasteful in front of goal, while centre-back duo Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers were also rather sloppy at the back.

Although, it will undoubtedly be central midfielder Matt O’Riley most disappointed with his performance in the 3-2 victory, as the 21-year-old’s display was by far his worst since his £1.5m move to Parkhead in January.

Lost possession 20x

Despite having averaged a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.76 over his five previous Premiership outings – scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating three big chances for his teammates in these fixtures – the former England U18 international was well below-par over his 79 minutes on the pitch on Sunday.

Indeed, while the £405k-rated midfielder did complete 42 passes – one of which was key – against the Dark Blues, he was also uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball at his feet, failing to find his intended target with any of his six attempted crosses, his one attempted long ball and ceding possession for his side on a whopping 20 separate occasions.

The youngster also lost four of his seven duels, gave away one foul, failed with his one attempted dribble and was dribbled past by an opponent once.

These returns saw the 21-year-old who Bhoys Analytics dubbed an “all-rounder” earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.5, while the Scottish Daily Express awarded the midfielder a six in their own player ratings, as well as stating of his display:

“This was probably the January signing’s least effective game since joining from MK Dons as he struggled to have a big influence on the match.”

As such, with the mammoth task of overturning a 3-1 first-leg defeat away at Bodo/Glimt in Thursday’s Europa Conference League play-off fixture, O’Riley’s performance against Dundee will have undoubtedly given Postecoglou something of a selection headache ahead of the European clash – as a repeat of his display against the Dark Blues could well cost his side a shot at overturning their two-goal deficit against the Norwegians.

In other news: Ange may have made a grave mistake on “immense” 21 y/o, it could cost Celtic big time

Tendulkar in all major categories for ICC awards

Sachin Tendulkar is the only cricketer to have been short-listed in all the three major categories for the seventh annual ICC awards
