Sanchez says Arteta will be given time

Lawrie Sanchez has exclusively told Football FanCast that he believes Mikel Arteta will be given time to turn things around at Arsenal.

The Spaniard has bagged the FA Cup since replacing Unai Emery last Christmas, but Arsenal’s Premier League form has been underwhelming during his 18 months at the club.

The north London outfit had the perfect opportunity to put their shocking league results behind them by winning the Europa League.

However, the Gunners were unable to overturn a 2-1 deficit in their semi-final against Villarreal last Thursday – with the ultimate humiliation being that it was at the expense of their former manager Emery, who was the man sacked and replaced by Arteta.

Arsenal have responded to their European exit with victories over West Brom and Chelsea, and despite the prospect of their lowest Premier League finish since the 1995-1996 campaign, Sanchez believes the former Gunners midfielder will be given at least the summer window to prove himself.

He told Football FanCast:

“It was embarrassing to be knocked out of the Europe League by Emery, but, the one thing he has got on his CV is winning the FA Cup.

“I think they will bear with him – fans not being in the stadium has probably benefited managers that have struggled, like him. Once you started getting booed off pitches, owners start to take notice.

“I think they will give him another year, give him another transfer window, and give him the benefit of the doubt.”

Aston Villa eyeing Paulo Gazzaniga

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith must finally land Paulo Gazzaniga after a major development regarding the goalkeeper’s future.

What’s the story?

Reports last September suggested that the Argentine was a target for Smith’s side as they looked to strengthen the goalkeeping department, but the Midlands club moved on from the 1.95m (6 foot 5) titan and signed Arsenal’s Emi Martinez instead.

Gazzaniga saw his time with Spurs come to an end earlier in the week after being released by the north London side, and when asked if he thinks the 29-year-old could go to Villa, football journalist Alan Nixon tweeted (via Birmingham Mail): “Would make a lot of sense. Villa want an experienced No.2.”

Perfect no.2 for Martinez

With recent confirmation that Tom Heaton has left the club, Villa could do with some new competition for Martinez in between the sticks for next season.

In Gazzaniga, they could find the perfect player to come in, with the Argentine having deputised for Hugo Lloris at Spurs numerous times and his former boss Jose Mourinho even hailing him as “magic hands” after a particularly impressive performance against Wolves last season.

Add that to his Argentine nationality, and he should even settle in well at Villa Park given that he already has a international compatriot in Martinez, and the duo will no doubt push each other to greater heights.

Given that he won’t cost the club a penny in transfer fees either after being released by the Lilywhites, along with having ample Premier League experience, Gazzaniga seems like the perfect backup to Martinez both in terms of quality and value.

Celtic’s predicted XI to face Livingston

Celtic opened their Scottish Cup campaign last week with a routine 3-0 victory over Falkirk.

It was a nice distraction for the Bhoys as they were able to forget about their horrendous league season for a week and focus on other targets.

The Hoops have lost their grasp on the league title and have one remaining chance of winning some silverware this season. That, however, will be more difficult as they face fierce rivals Rangers in the next round.

This weekend, they are back in league action as they face Livingston at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon. They made a number of changes for their last clash so how will they line up when Livi travel to Glasgow?

We’re tipping Kennedy to make as many as four changes to the side which beat Falkirk a week ago.

That means a return to the line-up for a few of their star men. The £15,000-per-week Leigh Griffiths was handed a rare opportunity to lead the line but Odsonne Edouard is back this week. He’s scored 20 times this term and is their undisputed MVP from a rough-and-tumble campaign.

James Forrest keeps his place on the right flank after scoring his first goal following injury but Ryan Christie is axed from the starting XI. That means Mo Elyounoussi comes back after his impressive display against Rangers before the international break.

The Norwegian scored a wonderful diving header in that clash and deserves another run of starts.

David Turnbull moves slightly further forward to play behind the striker, while Callum McGregor replaces Tom Rogic in the line-up.

The only remaining change to note is a return for Greg Taylor. Diego Laxalt consequently drops out, with Taylor now having a number of weeks of full training under his belt after injury.

Gayle agrees contract extension

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract, The Athletic revealed on Monday.

The Magpies had been facing the possibility of Gayle leaving on a free transfer on the expiry of his current deal in June. Relegation rivals Fulham were said to have held a long-term interest in the striker, while a report in March claimed that Turkish side Galatasaray were also keen.

However, the 30-year-old has put that speculation to bed, accepting reduced terms to extend his stay on Tyneside. He had previously been earning a reported £40,000 per week.

Gayle’s limited involvement at Newcastle

The £4.5m-rated striker has only scored one Premier League goal this season in 11 appearances, but it should be noted that just two of those were starts and he was also missing for the 10 matches of the campaign with a ligament injury.

Gayle was selected – as a winger – for the trip to Chelsea last month and the draw at home to Aston Villa following injuries to Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson, but he was back to a watching brief for the woeful 3-0 defeat against Brighton last time out.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It may be something of a surprise that Newcastle have endeavoured to keep a 30-year-old who  Steve Bruce has rarely deployed in his starting XI despite him praising the ex-Crystal Palace marksman as a “natural goalscorer”.

Perhaps there is a slight element of planning for a possible relegation,as Gayle has been a devastating Championship hitman in the past. In the 2016/17 campaign, he bagged 23 goals for the Toon in the second tier, a feat he repeated with West Bromwich Albion a couple of seasons later (via Transfermarkt).

He may not be enjoying a stellar few months of late, but at least Newcastle have kept hold of one proven marksman for the foreseeable future.

In other news, Newcastle are reportedly preparing a bargain deal for this defender.

No último domingo mesmo, contra o Atlético-PR, Maicon lesionou a coxa esquerda no segundo tempo e estavam Lyanco e Lugano no banco.

LFC fans don’t want Dybala at Anfield

A number of Liverpool fans are against the idea of the Reds signing Paulo Dybala after reports emerged linking him with a move to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to make signings in the summer transfer window as he looks to continue improving his squad moving forward.

While injuries have clearly had a huge effect on Liverpool’s struggles this season, there have been times when a lack of squad depth has been evident.

In truth, the Reds have been fortunate in having Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all largely available, but the front three have struggled to consistently click as a unit.

Diogo Jota is now back fit again and will provide competition for places in attack, but Klopp could look to bring in another forward-thinking player at the end of the season.

According to El Gol Digital, Juventus star Dybala is a target for Liverpool, with the Serie A giants valuing him at £60m but the Reds hopeful of signing him for less.

The 27-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer of 2022, so Juventus may be keen to offload him this summer in order to receive a fee for him. The Argentine has been ruled out since January with a medial collateral ligament injury, the latest fitness setback he has endured in his career (Transfermarkt).

Phil Hay drops big Leeds transfer update

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered a major update on Leeds United’s transfer plans this summer.

What’s the story?

Despite enjoying an impressive first season back in the Premier League, all eyes will no doubt be on how Marcelo Bielsa’s side look to strengthen when the summer transfer window comes around.

Now, Hay has suggested that Leeds could be set for a mini-overhaul of their squad, with the club supposedly eyeing up to five new signings at Elland Road.

Responding to a question in a pre-match Q&A for The Athletic ahead of the Premier League clash against Fulham on Friday night, Hay said: “I’m told they’ll look at signing around five players in the summer. The numbers can’t be wild because a) good players at this level are expensive and b) if Bielsa stays on, he doesn’t like massive overhauls. But I think we can all see what needs to be done.”

Bielsa will be buzzing

Make no mistake about it, while Bielsa may not be a big fan of completely overhauling things and seeing a huge turnover of players, the prospect of five new signings should make a real impact on trying to establish Leeds as a Premier League force.

To the Whites’ credit, their performances this season have largely been carried by those who played a major role in their promotion from the Championship: the likes of Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips to name but a couple.

But taking that next step, especially at Premier League level, requires some big spending and some major moves in the transfer market, and it’s exactly why Bielsa should be buzzing that those above him seem intent on trying to really reinforce his squad ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, Leeds should unleash this starlet who Bielsa loves next season…
