West Ham: O’Rourke drops Trossard claim

West Ham United have made an approach in a bid to bring Leandro Trossard to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Pete O’Rourke, with the journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that West Ham have made an enquiry with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a deal to sign the 27-year-old forward, with David Moyes desperate to bring in attacking reinforcements prior to Monday’s transfer deadline.

In his tweet, O’Rourke said: “Understand West Ham have made a shock enquiry for Brighton attacker Leandro Trossard.”

Fans will finally be pleased

While it is true that Trossard is naturally a winger, the Belgium international’s impressive positional versatility – being able to operate on either flank, in attacking midfield or at centre-forward – is undoubtedly a major reason for West Ham’s interest in the attacker.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-west-ham-news” title=”Check out the latest West Ham News”]

Furthermore, the £15.3m-rated forward is also proven in the Premier League, something that the 58-year-old Hammers manager typically prefers his signings to be – in order to reduce the amount of time it takes for a player to settle into the club.

However, not only does Trossard possess top-flight experience, the winger demonstrated over his 35 league outings last season that he has the ability to thrive in the division, scoring five goals, registering five assists and creating six big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.7 shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £35k-per-week Belgian earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as Graham Potter’s fifth-best performer in the Premier League last time out.

As such, while the 27-year-old is not an out and out centre-forward, considering his impressive returns in the final third, his versatility in attacking roles and his experience in the division, the Brighton star would very much appear to make an excellent addition to Moyes’ attacking arsenal at the London Stadium – with fans undoubtedly being delighted to hear that the 58-year-old is finally addressing a problem position in his squad.

Caso o Palmeiras consiga me contratar, ele pode tomar a frente dessa negociação – disse ele.

West Ham interested in Jonathan David

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Jonathan David to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent post on The West Ham Way that the LOSC Lille centre-forward is one of the names on David Moyes’ transfer shortlist ahead of the winter window.

However, the insider went on to state that the Hammers’ interest should be taken with a pinch of salt, as the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal are all also keen on the 21-year-old, meaning West Ham’s chances of securing a deal for the Canada international look quite low at this stage.

In his post, ExWHUemployee said: “There has been a lot of talk in the press and on social media in recent days of West Ham making a move for Lille striker Jonathan David. We are interested however this must be taken with a pinch of salt.

“Other clubs also eyeing the Canadian – who is [the] top scorer in Ligue 1 – are Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal. So a move to West Ham at this stage is unlikely.”

Fans will be delighted

Despite the insider’s claim that a West Ham deal for David may not be the most realistic in the January transfer window, the confirmation that the Hammers are indeed interested in the forward is sure to have delighted fans nevertheless.

Indeed, the striker has highly impressed over his 18 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season, scoring 11 goals and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £45m-rated man average a SofaScore match rating of 6.97, ranking him as Jocelyn Gourvennec’s fifth-best player in the top flight of French football.

The £35k-per-week forward has also impressed over his six Champions League outings, bagging a further three goals and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.88 – with his performances helping his side finish top of their group table, setting up a round of 16 clash with Premier League side Chelsea.

As such, should West Ham manage to pull off a deal to sign the player who has been compared to Luis Suarez this January, it would undoubtedly be a fantastic signing for the club’s board to get over the line.

Not only would David help to fire West Ham to as high a finish in the league as possible this season, he would also appear to be a perfect long-term heir for the Hammers’ current talismanic forward, Michail Antonio.

Ponting switches focus to one-dayers

Ricky Ponting has defended Australia’s schedule of ten one-day internationals and three Twenty20s over the next month despite the growing popularity of the shortest format

Brydon Coverdale19-Jan-2010Ricky Ponting has defended Australia’s schedule of ten one-day internationals and three Twenty20s over the next month despite the growing popularity of the shortest format. Australia begin their limited-overs season on Friday at the Gabba with the first of five ODIs against Pakistan, followed by five against West Indies.Ponting has been a critic of long bilateral 50-over series in the past but he said it was important to persist with the one-day game to pave the way for major events such as the World Cup. However, at domestic level the preference for Twenty20 among fans is building, as highlighted when 43,125 turned up to a Big Bash match at the MCG last week.”Domestically they’ve had some great numbers this year, obviously with the Big Bash going as well as it has,” Ponting said. “That’s been satisfying for all of us to see, that the game is being well-received. [Internationally] I think the balance is right. What we have to be careful of is protecting the iconic series that we play.”One of them is the World Cup, so we’ve got to be protective of the 50-over game as much as we can. As we know, the last few years the one-day series has been two lots of five games. Hopefully both of those series between the West Indies and Pakistan will go down to the wire and they’re well attended and we’ll continue to play some good one-day cricket.”The seven-match ODI series against England that followed the Ashes last year drew criticism from Ponting but he is less worried about five-game battles. He was even happy with the seven that Australia played – and won 4-2 – against India in October and November because the matches were so well fought, and he was especially pleased with Australia’s form having won the Champions Trophy in South Africa in October.”The last couple of one-day series that we’ve played in have been terrific contests,” he said. “The series that we just played in India was some of the best one-day cricket that we’ve played, but more importantly for people to watch, that I can remember. The one-day game is still alive and well, if it’s played the right way, and we’ll certainly be doing everything we can to make it attractive for everyone to watch.”Australia have the momentum having beaten Pakistan 3-0 in the Test series but there are changes to their squad, with four one-day specialists picked. Of the Test players, Simon Katich and Marcus North will not play in the one-dayers and Mitchell Johnson has been rested for the first three.Pakistan have also made alterations from their five-day group, notably with Younis Khan to return and Shahid Afridi to join the squad as vice-captain. Ponting said the different playing lists and shorter format meant his men could not assume they would continue their domination of Pakistan in the five ODIs and one Twenty20 international.”I never really worry too much about taking momentum from series to series, especially when it’s different forms of the game,” he said. “Both teams will have a vast changeover of players, I’d imagine, so whatever you create in the Test arena evaporates pretty quickly in the one-day arena, or it can do. Guys in this Test team that will play one-day cricket are in good touch.”

Tottenham: Conte gifted Ivan Perisic boost

According to Inter Live, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been gifted a boost in the race to sign Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic.

The Lowdown: Spurs enter talks…

According to reports over the last week from Germany, Spurs have entered talks to sign the Croatian as his contract winds down at the San Siro.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

His current deal, which set to expire in 2022, presents an opportunity for interested clubs to sign him on a pre-contract ahead of a summer move for free.

Sport 1 claimed that there are currently ‘talks with Tottenham’ over a move to sign Perisic for Conte, with another update now coming courtesy of Inter Live.

The Latest: Perisic prioritises Spurs move…

In a boost for Conte, the outlet claimed (via Sport Witness) that Perisic is very keen on a move to north London, with his future at the San Siro now more uncertain than ever.

It is claimed that a ‘first-rated space’ is reserved for Spurs in particular, where he would re-join Conte after the pair’s time together in Italy. This feasibly puts Tottenham above the ‘row of clubs’ who are eager to sign Perisic, including his former club Wolfsburg.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Amassing plenty of experience on the biggest stages in world football, including World Cup semi-final heroics against England, Perisic would be an astute swoop on a free transfer.

He has been a mainstay for the Nerazzurri this season, scoring three goals and setting up one more over 13 Serie A starts, with former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho a big fan of the player. The 6 foot 1 colossus is also tailor-made for the Premier League, with former Inter head coach Luciano Spaletti claiming that the Croatian’s physique is that of a ‘horse’.

Able to play across the attacking midfield and as a centre-forward (Transfermarkt), the 32-year-old could even come as a makeshift alternative to Harry Kane going by his impressive 132-goal senior career haul.

Lauded as ‘sensational’ by the Italian press for his recent form, it’s clear that he is not only attainable but also a solid option for Conte.

Worcestershire sign Ben Scott on loan

Worcestershire have signed Ben Scott, the 28-year-old wicketkeeper, on loan from Middlesex.

Cricinfo staff04-Dec-2009Worcestershire have signed Ben Scott, the 28-year-old wicketkeeper, on loan from Middlesex. He will arrive at New Road at the beginning of next season for a minimum of four weeks to fill in for Ben Cox, Worcester’s 17-year-old first-choice keeper, while Cox completes his A-Levels.Angus Fraser, the Middlesex director of cricket, said the move was instigated by Worcestershire and suited both the clubs and Scott himself.”Worcestershire have a young keeper who they regard highly, but educational commitments mean that he is unavailable until the end of June 2010, a situation that encouraged Steven Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, to contact me about the availability of one of Middlesex’s wicketkeepers.””I informed Steven of Middlesex’s position and he asked whether we would be prepared to allow Ben to go on loan to Worcestershire until their young keeper became available.”Middlesex endured a torrid season in 2009, finishing eighth in Division Two of the Championship and Scott struggled, making 167 runs at 12.84 from eight first-class games. He was replaced by Simpson who fared better, contributing 170 runs at 28.33 from his three games.”Ben had a difficult season in 2009; a summer that culminated in us favouring John Simpson as our first eleven wicketkeeper. During his time in the first team John performed extremely well and showed great promise,” said Fraser.”His potential did not go unnoticed, with the ECB selecting him for one of their winter performance squads. In my view John performed well enough last season to merit his selection in the first eleven for the start of the 2010 season, which Ben has been made aware of.”Fraser was keen to assert that Scott’s future remains with Middlesex and the conditions of the loan mean that Scott could return to London at any time.”Ben has repeatedly been told that he remains a part of Middlesex’s plans moving forward and the club very much want him to be with them during pre-season.””The loan agreement allows Middlesex to recall Ben at any point, should John Simpson sustain an injury that prevents him from playing. Middlesex can also recall Ben should John’s form no longer merit him a place in the first eleven.”Josh Knappett, another young wicketkeeper in the Worcestershire squad has had limited opportunities to impress while Steven Davies, currently in South Africa with England’s Test squad, was at New Road. Davies’ move to Surrey, announced in August, could have opened the door for Knappett while Cox was unavailable but Worcestershire opted to sign Scott instead.Scott could feature against Middlesex in the Championship on April 9 and has said he wants to use his opportunities at Worcester to reclaim his starting spot for Middlesex.”I am extremely excited by this new challenge and I am looking forward to the experience. I am grateful to Worcestershire for potentially giving me the opportunity to play first eleven cricket and my full intention is to show Middlesex that I not only have what it takes to play in their first eleven, but also to go on and perform at a higher level.”

Yerry Mina could return against Brentford

Everton have received a potential injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Brentford over the weekend after it was revealed the club are hopeful that Yerry Mina will be able to make his return to action.

What’s the word?

The 27-year-old last featured in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United on 2nd October before picking up a hamstring injury while on international duty.

However, according to the Liverpool ECHO, Mina could be in line to make his comeback for the trip to west London after making a full recovery.

Phil Kirkbride’s report states that: “Everton are hoping Yerry Mina is passed fit to play in London at the weekend.

“The Colombian centre-half has missed the last four league matches because of a hamstring issue but it is believed he was left out as a precaution.”

Rafa Benitez will be buzzing

News that Mina could play some part against the Bees on Sunday will have Everton manager Rafa Benitez buzzing with excitement, given his importance to the first-team squad.

Prior to his fitness woes, the South American had made six Premier League appearances this season, losing on just one occasion.

In his absence, the Toffees have lost four of their five encounters, keeping just one clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. And his underlying numbers indicate why.

As per WhoScored, Mina has averaged 1.5 interceptions per top-flight fixture, four clearances and 0.7 blocks, placing him in the top four amongst his teammates for each metric.

With Everton currently in desperate need of a positive result against Brentford, Benitez will be delighted to have Mina back at his disposal, providing a huge boost to their chances of securing all three points.

Newcastle: Craig Hope makes Howe claim

An update has emerged on Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, regarding his first day at the club in training.

What’s the talk?

Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope has claimed that the 43-year-old is attempting to instil a hard-working mentality amongst the Magpies players. The ex-Cherries boss wants his team to train as hard as they play and to never stop working in training.

He wrote:

“Further to videos of Eddie Howe’s first NUFC session, I’m told overriding message was “we train as we play”. A lot of “match sharp”, “no jogging” & “if you think you’re maxed out, you’re not”. Howe later watched club’s Under-11s train.”

Buzzing

This exciting claim from Hope will leave Newcastle fans buzzing as it provides an incredibly promising insight into his first day on Tyneside. The update indicates that he is trying to get a quick response out of his players to see who is and who isn’t willing to put the hard yards in during training.

The responses said it all with one fan indicating that he loves the new manager already while another said it gave them “Kevin Keegan vibes.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Supporters are evidently delighted by this and it’s not surprising to see why. It suggests that he wants his team to work tirelessly for the cause and that could translate on the pitch in the upcoming Premier League matches, particularly if it influences team selection.

If the fans can see that the players are giving their all and leaving everything on the field in games then it could be easier to take adverse results when they come about, rather than if the fans feel as though some are not playing at 100%.

There is no hiding away from the difficult position Howe has inherited. Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League and are the only side in the division yet to win a game, with five points on the table after 11 matches. It will take sheer hard work and graft for them to grind out results and pull themselves to safety, which is why this claim from Hope will be music to the fans’ ears.

However, it is only worthwhile if it works in practice and Howe has under two weeks to ensure that he can set his team out in the best possible way to beat Brentford on the other side of the international break.

The gap between the Magpies and the rest of the division could only increase if they continue to go through games without picking up their first win, which is why it is great to see the ex-Bournemouth coach quickly instilling these particular set of values on the players so early into his reign.

India and West Indies fight for pole position

India will need their top order to fire to go 2-1 up in the series and take an unassailable lead

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya02-Jul-2009Match factsFriday, July 3, 2009
Start time 09.30 (13.30 GMT)
The Big PictureIndia will have to look beyond Yuvraj Singh to counter the West Indies pace attack•Associated Press

It’s been a year of contrasting fortunes for the two teams in the ODI format, and they have much to make up for in tomorrow’s contest in St Lucia. India have had a successful 2009 in the 50-over game, with series wins in New Zealand and Sri Lanka. An unassailable lead with a win in St Lucia will boost their chances of wrapping another series away from home, making amends for their debacle in the World Twenty20 and ending their hectic few weeks ahead of a two-month break on a high. West Indies have been disappointing this year, winning four ODIs and losing eight, but have the momentum going into a crunch game with a comprehensive win in Kingston to level the series. However, they are under as much pressure to perform at home. A 2-1 lead, and more so a series win, will do a lot towards easing that burden and leaving them a confident outfit as they take on Bangladesh in their next series. The home team’s performance in the second ODI marked a major improvement, particularly in its bowling. West Indies found a gem in Ravi Rampaul, who swung the ball both ways, inducing the batsmen to make mistakes, while Jerome Taylor was the pick of the West Indies bowlers. He claimed the wickets of Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, each of whom had a role to play in smashing 339 in the series opener. Though they didn’t have a big score to chase, the West Indies batsmen ensured their team outclassed India in every field, with Chris Gayle and Runako Morton deciding the game even before a wicket fell with a century opening stand.India’s bowlers were indisciplined in the first game, bowling 19 wides and two front-foot no-balls, and the trait seemed to have rubbed off on their batsmen. Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj, each got out chasing wide deliveries, while the tail, with the exception of RP Singh, who added 101 with Dhoni to save India’s blushes, was hapless. Dhoni, at the end of the game, pointed out that over-reliance on Yuvraj, who has scores of 131 and 35 in the series, was not going to win India the series. And with an important game coming up, India’s top order will have to step up, with greater preparedness to counter the short ball.ODI form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
India – LWLWW
West Indies – WLLLN
Watch out for …Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma: With an average of 25.33 in 39 ODIs, there is plenty of room for improvement for Rohit in the ODI format. Another failure at No.3 tomorrow is something he can ill afford after scores of 4 and 0 in the series so far. Gambhir has had a satisfactory year, averaging 38.80, but his weakness against the short ball was exposed in the ICC World Twenty20, and in the first game by Jerome Taylor. The pair will do well to deliver when it matters tomorrow to boost India’s chances of a series win.West Indies’ pace attack: Each of West Indies’ pace bowlers bagged wickets in the eight-wicket rout in Kingston, using swing and variations to unsettle the Indian batsmen. Taylor was the best among them, Rampaul was the surprise package and Bravo bowled a scorcher to get rid of Yusuf Pathan. They made the best use of favourable conditions while India were batting, and if they are offered anything similar at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, India’s batsmen are up for another serious challenge.Team newsRavindra Jadeja had an impressive ODI debut, making an unbeaten 60 against Sri Lanka but has failed in this series, getting dismissed in an identical manner on both occasions. He was out first ball in the first game, playing away from his body and edging to the keeper, and managed just 7 in the second with his team in trouble. He could be left out of the next game for allrounder Abhishek Nayar to make his international debut.India (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Dinesh Karthik, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja/ Abhishek Nayar, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 RP Singh, 11 Ashish Nehra.West Indies retained their squad for the final two one-dayers and are likely to go ahead with a winning combination.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Runako Morton, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Darren Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Jerome Taylor, 9 David Bernard, 10 Suleiman Benn, 11 Ravi Rampaul.Pitch and conditionsGayle expects the pitch to be full of runs as the venue has traditionally helped the batsmen.Stats and trivia West Indies have played nine games at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, winning five and losing four. India are yet to play a game at this venue. West Indies’ eight-wicket victory in Kingston was their biggest against India in terms of balls remaining after winning. They won with 95 balls to spare, bettering their effort in Port of Spain 20 years earlier, where they had won with 68 balls left. MS Dhoni and RP Singh’s stand of 101 is the fourth-highest for the ninth wicket in ODIs, and the third-highest for India. The average score while batting first in St Lucia is 243. The side batting first has won on seven occasions and lost nine. The highest score at the venue is 363, by New Zealand against Canada in the 2007 World Cup. The lowest is 146, by West Indies against England earlier this year. Quotes”It is a case of two good teams playing against each other, and we expect two very competitive matches.”
“Yuvraj, on any given day, can destroy any bowling attack. When he is in that sort of mood (as he was in the first ODI) he is very difficult to bowl to. We have to try and contain him as much as possible but at the same time he’s experienced and has a lot of power and he is definitely the main batter in this Indian team.”
“We have good communication out there which is very good and we can assess the conditions as quickly as possible and make the necessary adjustments. I want him to play his game and I will support him at the other end.”
