A-League: Five players ready to dominate the competition

The new season is about to kickoff and a group of players look set to take it by storm

With the A-League finally set to begin, several stars look ready to make their mark on the competition.

Despite suggestions the league is lacking entertainment, these five players can be backed to get supporters excited this season.

Goal takes a look at the superstar quintet…

Getty Images1Alessandro Diamanti (Western United)

The Italian playmaker was only denied a previous move to Melbourne Victory in 2016 after the FFA deemed him not worthy of their marquee money.

Ironically, Diamanti is now the captain and face of new Melbourne-based franchise Western United.

The 36-year-old will be a delight to watch as he terrorises midfields and defences with his movement and passing.

Expect to see the likes of Besart Berisha and Scott McDonald on the end of some Diamanti magic this season.

AdvertisementPerth Glory2Bruno Fornaroli (Perth Glory)

It's been nearly a full year since Fornaroli has played in the A-League, after being frozen out by his Melbourne City coach Warren Joyce.

The 32-year-old was lethal in front of goal during his first two campaigns at City, scoring 24 goals (2015-16) and 17 (2016-17) before an ankle fracture wiped out his 2017-18 season.

Now at Premiers Perth Glory, under master coach Tony Popovic, Fornaroli will be the number one striker after Andy Keogh packed his bags for the Middle East.

The prospect of Diego Castro, Neil Kilkenny and Chris Ikonomidis feeding balls to the clinical Uruguayan striker is something to look forward to.

Getty Images3Alexander Meier (Western Sydney Wanderers)

Out of the blue and into the red and black. It was a surprise when legendary German striker Meier was unveiled as the new Wanderers centre forward.

German coach Markus Babbel made use of his connections to bring the 36-year-old Down Under as one of the A-League's highest profile recruits.

Meier was the Bundesliga's top scorer in 2014-15 with 19 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt and reached double figures for strikes in two further seasons.

The 196cm striker will be a nightmare for A-League defenders to handle and if the Wanderers can provide good service, expect him to be one of the stars of the competition.

Getty4Andrew Nabbout (Melbourne Victory)

After a season abroad in Japan, Nabbout has returned to Melbourne Victory – the place where his A-League began in 2013.

Before he left for Urawa Reds, the 26-year-old established himself as one of the stars of the A-League with the Newcastle Jets, scoring 18 goals in 46 matches for the Hunter Valley club.

Nabbout also led the line for the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup, starting the first two matches before dislocating his shoulder and missing the final group game.

His pre-season at Melbourne Victory has been flawless with regular goals and linking up menacingly with captain Ola Toivonen.

Nabbout looks to be entering this prime of his career and there is a good chance they won't be missing Kosta Barbarouses too much.

Atapattu, Prabodhani hold off SA Women

Sri Lanka Women captain Chamari Atapattu struck her maiden T20I fifty, effected a run out, and picked up a wicket, to lead her side to a 10-run victory over South Africa Women in Bangalore

Sri Lanka Women captain Chamari Atapattu willed and rallied her side to a 10-run victory over South Africa Women in Bangalore, in the last league match of the Women’s World T20.Atapattu first stroked her maiden T20 international fifty, which contained five fours and one six, even as her partners floundered. Atapattu then brought herself into the attack in the defence of 114 and her second over resulted in two wickets. She ran to her right from her follow through, collected a wristy push from Trisha Chetty and flung a throw to the keeper to catch Dane van Niekerk short for 24 off 31 balls. Three balls later, Atapattu pinned her opposite number Mignon du Preez plumb in front for a duck, a wicket the Sri Lanka captain identified as the “turning point” at the post match-presentation.Left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari and left-arm pacer Udeshika Prabodhani backed Atapattu to squeeze South Africa’s middle order. From 50 for 0, South Africa slumped to 102 for 7. Du Preez said: “We had a good start and we lost it in the middle order. We have been struggling with it in the whole tournament. It was also poor execution from us. This is something we need to work on and come back stronger.”Prabodhani speared in full balls and defended 12 off the last over, including taking the wicket of Chloe Tryon for 11 off 10 balls. Though it was just a dead rubber, Sri Lanka toasted the win, and got into a huddle only after wicketkeeper-batsman Dilani Manodara had joined the team from the dug out; Prasadani Weerakkody had taken the gloves in the absence of Manodara.Manodara was pinged on the grille of the helmet when she missed a scoop off her first ball. She scratched around for 4 off 9 balls, before she was bowled by seamer Marcia Letsoalo. Manodara was later sent to the hospital for a scan and it was found that she had no major injuries.Sri Lanka’s middle order folded as well and they managed only 34 for 4 in their last five overs. Atapattu, however, had lifted Sri Lanka with a bevy of muscled slog sweeps. She hit 52 off 49 balls before she was run out by Marizanna Kapp, who was featuring in her 50th T20 international. She picked up two wickets and was complemented by legspinner Suné Luus, who also scalped two wickets. But Attapattu’s act would prove to be too much for South Africa.

Extra game scheduled after washout

There was frustration for all involved as Ireland’s second Twenty20 international against Scotland was washed out without a ball being bowled on Friday

Ryan Bailey19-Jun-2015
ScorecardJohn Bracewell has had little opportunity to see what Ireland can do•Getty ImagesThere was frustration for all involved as Ireland’s second Twenty20 international against Scotland was washed out without a ball being bowled on Friday. The abandonment led to a fourth game being added to the series, with the consent of the ICC, to be played at 3.30pm on Saturday. The Bready groundstaff were steadfast in their efforts to try and have the square and outfield fit for play once the rain relented; this series is the first international cricket to be played in the region for over a decade. But once the rain clouds arrived from over the hills, there was inevitability about the outcome. The teams eventually shook hands shortly before 7.30pm local time with the light fading and the prospects of play all but gone.Ireland had made three changes to their side from the one that was comprehensively beaten on Thursday. George Dockrell and Andrew Balbirnie were drafted in alongside Alex Cusack after Scotland captain Preston Mommsen had won the toss and asked the hosts, unsurprisingly, to bat under leaden skies but just as the locals were settling in for a delayed start, the rain returned and put paid to any hopes of action. The lack of match practice in the shortest format will be a concern for John Bracewell, Ireland’s new coach. Thursday’s game was Ireland’s first Twenty20 international since their defeat to Netherlands in the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh more than 12 months ago.Two of Ireland’s three games this summer have now been abandoned – hence the hasty decision to arrange an extra fixture. Saturday is at least forecast to be dry, unlike Sunday for the final instalment of the series.

Plans fall in place for Australia's A-Team

Mitchell Starc and James Faulkner have revealed how their carefully laid plans to dismantle New Zealand’s batsmen came to fruition

Brydon Coverdale at the MCG29-Mar-2015Mitchell Starc and bowling coach Craig McDermott might have been quoting from the during the innings break of the World Cup final. “I love it when a plan comes together”. The Australians emerged from their loss to New Zealand in Auckland four weeks ago with a few questions, none more so than how to keep Brendon McCullum quiet. At Eden Park, McCullum had faced Starc’s first over of New Zealand’s small chase, and smashed him for 14 runs. In all, he plundered 50 off 24 deliveries to set New Zealand on the path to victory, albeit a path that nearly stopped short of the destination. The prospect of facing New Zealand in a knockout further along in the tournament set Starc and McDermott thinking.Their plans came together when McCullum chose to bat first in the final at the MCG. In the first over, Starc’s 149kph inswinging yorker missed McCullum’s bat and barely the off stump as well. Second ball: McCullum charged Starc, who followed him and again bat was not laid on ball. The third delivery was like the second, only it rattled McCullum’s stumps. The crowd erupted at a defining moment.”We’ve watched him a fair bit through the tournament be pretty destructive,” Starc said. “He’s been a key player for them right from the beginning. He’s been fantastic for the Kiwis to get them off to great starts. I think after that game in New Zealand we had to assess him as we went, because he’s very unpredictable.”Personally, I had a bit of a plan going with Craig McDermott about bowling a decent yorker to him first up. I’m not sure how that first one missed, but lucky that third one hit. There’s a lot of luck involved but just lucky to see that plan came off.”Starc was not surprisingly named Player of the Tournament for his 22 wickets at 10.18 and a remarkable economy rate of 3.50. His form continued in the decider when he collected 2 for 20 from his eight overs after adding Luke Ronchi’s wicket, and McCullum said he had no answers for Starc in the first over of the match.”He was a bit too good for me today, that’s for sure,” McCullum said. “He deserves the Man of the Tournament. He was outstanding bowling at good pace, he swung the ball late, he was incredibly accurate all the way along as well. Sometimes in this game you go in with the best-laid plans and your ideal scenario of how you see the game panning out, but sometimes a guy is just too good for you.”If Starc was too good early, the Player of the Match, James Faulkner was too good late. The other key moment of the match came when the Powerplay began in the 36th over and Faulkner used the first ball of it to catch Ross Taylor’s edge with a slower delivery that ended the 111-run partnership between Taylor and Grant Elliott which had threatened to set up a challenging total. Faulkner struck again two balls later.”I thought at times New Zealand looked like they were going to get away from us,” Faulkner said. “I thought Ross Taylor and Grant Elliot had an exceptional partnership considering what happened at the start, to pull things back for them, but at the end of the day, to bowl them out for 183 was fantastic.”I use [the slower ball] as a change of pace so the batters don’t get set. I bowl in the Powerplays and at the death. If you’re bowling the same ball there’s more chance of you getting hit out of the park. It’s the change-up I use to take wickets and also to change the batters’ swing when they’re trying to hit me to parts of the ground. Sometimes it doesn’t come out as good as what I wanted but today it came out okay and I used it half a dozen times.”It was that kind of day for Australia, a day when all their plans came together.

Agora, com a semana cheia, podemos planificar melhor o jogo do Grêmio – disse Arrascaeta, projetando a partida deste sábado, no Maracanã.

Anderson 'most skilful in world' – Cook

Alastair Cook has hailed James Anderson as “the most skilful bowler in the world” and the best “England have ever produced”.Anderson comes into the fifth Test of the Investec series against India requiring just seven more wickets to equal Ian Botham’s England record of 383. Cook, the England captain, admitted that Anderson might not have the pace of South Africa’s Dale Steyn but suggested his ability to swing the ball both ways rendered him almost as dangerous.”He is the most skilful bowler in the world,” Cook said. “There have been some very good bowlers I’ve played with but, for pure out-and-out skill, there is no doubt. He is the best bowler England have ever produced.”No disrespect to Dale Steyn, but the way Jimmy can swing the ball both ways – I don’t think Dale can do that quite as well as Jimmy but Dale has the advantage of being able to bowl quicker. Dale has been the No. 1 bowler in the world for quite a long time in terms of the number of wickets he takes. He always picks up wickets. And those two are in the same class.”Anderson will soon be the leading wicket taker in Test matches for England. That is quite a glowing reference. It’s an amazing achievement. If he does it in this game, it will mean England are in a very strong position.”You saw his guts and determination last week at Manchester when he was bowling when he wasn’t very well. That was extraordinary. That pretty much tells me, tells everyone, what a bloke he is and to back it up with his talent and skill means he is a very fine bowler.”Cook also confirmed that Stuart Broad would play despite sustaining a broken nose during the Manchester game.”We think he’s going to be absolutely fine,” Cook said. “You don’t get a partnership like he and Jimmy Anderson have had without being a world-class bowler. They’ve taken over 500 wickets together. Any captain would want those two in the team if possible, so it’s great news for us as a team that Broady has come through that blow.”

– Eu sempre acompanho o futebol brasileiro. Vi que ele tinha entrado no último jogo, vem bem e ele é um guri muito bom, possui qualidade. Quando o time está encaixado as coisas ficam mais fáceis. Ele está de parabéns, fez um grande jogo – completou.
