Bangladesh A lose despite Naeem ton

Scorecard
Naeem Islam’s unbeaten 101 wasn’t enough to chase down Bangladesh’s massive total•BCB

Half-centuries from their top four batsman powered the Bangladesh national side to a massive 311 which proved too much for the A team despite a century from Naeem Islam in a rain-shortened match in Mirpur. After being sent in, Bangladesh’s openers made contrasting fifties, with Tamim Iqbal scoring at nearly a run-a-ball while Shahriar Nafees contributed a more patient effort. Both were dismissed in the space of two overs by the offspin of Mahmudullah but the national side didn’t squander the base provided by the openers. Mohammad Ashraful and captain Mushfiqur Rahim both made quick half-centuries as they put on 130 in 18.2 overs. The partnership ensured that despite a glut of wickets towards the end of the innings, Bangladesh posted a total in excess of 300.Rain then curtailed the chase to a 39-over affair, with the target revised to 271. The A team’s reply was hampered by a couple of early strikes by medium-pacer Rubel Hossain. Opener Junaid Siddique (45) and Naeem then steadied the innings with a 66-run stand but their slow scoring pushed the required-rate beyond nine by the 20th over. Naeem continued to fight, and remained unbeaten on 101, but there was little support for him from those who followed and the national side won comfortably.

Melbourne Stars sign Luke Wright

England and Sussex allrounder Luke Wright will play for the Melbourne Stars in this year’s Big Bash League

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2011England and Sussex allrounder Luke Wright will play for the Melbourne Stars in this year’s Big Bash League.Wright is the first overseas player to be added to the Stars squad and joins David Hussey, Cameron White and Adam Voges in the Melbourne ranks, while Victorian bowling trio James Pattinson, John Hastings and Clint McKay have also been signed.Wright, 26, part of England’s successful World Twenty20 team in the Caribbean last year and was also a member of their squad for the World Cup in the subcontinent. He also has plenty of Twenty20 experience with Sussex, having scored 1,139 runs – including one century – and taken 41 wickets for them.”Wright is an impressive young man who can open the batting or bowling,” said Melbourne coach Greg Shipperd. “He provides options for the team as he can play any role through the middle to finishing overs. We are extremely pleased to have him as one of our foundation players.”

Honours even after record stand

Scorecard
It took Surrey six games to record their first Championship victory last season. When Northamptonshire slid to 163 for 7 on the second day at The Oval, Surrey looked on the way to winning at the first attempt this time round but Andrew Hall and James Middlebrook fought back with an unbroken 120-run stand to leave the game intriguingly poised. After the first day rattled along, proceedings were more meandering on another heady afternoon of London sunshine. The patience on show from both sides was in stark contrast to the flamboyance of Surrey’s batsmen but Tim Linley’s four wickets and Northamptonshire’s eighth-wicket pair demonstrated all the merits that dour discipline can still have.Linley found the perfect rhythm early on with his unflashy wicket-to-wicket medium-pace, barely venturing from back-of-a-length on off stump, to ensure Surrey might yet come away with a first-innings lead.It was his morning spell that set the tone. Nine splice-jarring overs for 11 runs and the key scalp of Steven Peters, pinned on the crease lbw for 19. Though Yasir Arafat was below his best Stuart Meaker provided useful support and – but for overstepping – would have had Rob White, who eventually top-scored with 78, out for a duck. A ball that nipped back on a lowish-surface struck White plush in front only for the no-ball to be signalled. Having grimly resisted all morning, Mal Loye suddenly ran down on at Gareth Batty on the stroke of lunch, only for a quicker ball to slide past him onto middle stump. After lunch, White made use of his no-ball reprieve by picking off the few loose offerings and when he swung an Arafat half-tracker over deep square to bring up his half-century Northamptonshire were looking comfortable. Linley then returned, this time from the Vauxhall End, with another nip-backer which, thanks to Alex Wakely’s generous leave, uprooted off stump. That sparked a mini-collapse as Northamptonshire lost three further wickets for six runs in 15 balls. First Meaker found David Sales’ edge, to make it four ducks in five Championship innings against Surrey, then Niall O’Brien squeezed a full, wide Linley delivery low to Steve Davies to fall for a duck. O’Brien felt he had jammed into the ground though and was disgusted with the decision.Chaminda Vaas fell soon after, missing an ill-advised and ambitious sweep to give Batty a second wicket and leave Northants wobbling at 163 for 7.It needed captain Hall to shore his side up. Together with Middlebrook he scrapped in the lengthening shadows and made use of a tiring attack. Hall and his Surrey counterpart, Rory Hamilton-Brown, could hardly appear more contrasting but his rugged, sensible 55 not out was every bit as crucial to Northamptonshire’s innings as Hamilton-Brown’s polished 74 was to Surrey’s.Middlebrook, ending the day unbeaten on 49, was equally accomplished and the pair batted through the entire evening session to surpass Rob Bailey and Paul Taylor’s Northamptonshire record for the highest eighth-wicket stand against Surrey. With the pitch dusting anything around 300 will be difficult to chase on the final day which leaves the game resting on Surrey’s inconsistent batsmen on day three.

Rhinos go second with thumping win

Mid West Rhinos beat Mashonaland Eagles convincingly to go second in the table while Matabeleland Tuskers drew with Southern Rocks

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Feb-2011Mid West Rhinos put in a dominating performance to beat Mashonaland Eagles by an innings and 70 runs at the Harare Sports Club. It was a complete performance by Rhinos. Their seamers skittled Eagles out for 97 on the first day, their top order came good giving them a 268-run first-innings lead and the spinners came into play on the third day, ensuring an early finish.Ian Nicolson and Neville Madziva did the damage on the first morning, finishing with four and three wickets respectively as Eagles crashed to a low score. Opener Gary Balance led the reply with a century. He was supported by Malcolm Waller who scored 91. Rhinos lost their last seven wickets for 65 runs but they were still in complete control of the game. Eagles started their second innings as poorly as they did their first, slumping to 31 for 4 with Nicolson again among the wickets. The middle order was then tormented by the offspin of Simon Mugava and they were soon 104 for 8. No. 10 Douglas Hondo smashed an unbeaten 60 off 41 balls, but it was not enough to make Rhinos bat again. The win takes Rhinos to second place in the table while Eagles are still languishing in fourth.

Matabeleland Tuskers lost the second spot to Rhinos after only getting a point from their match against bottom-placed Southern Rocks at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. A century by Adam Wheater gave Tuskers a 104-run first-innings lead, but opener Roy Kaia replied with a century of his own for Rocks to ensure the game ended in a draw.Kaia had failed in Rocks’ first innings, but a shaky start was rescued by Chamu Chibhabha whose 105 was the main reason Rocks got to 261. Tuskers’ innings started with an 85-run opening stand, and Gavin Ewing kicked on to get 80. His knock and Wheater’s 126 put Tuskers in a strong position but the lower order collapsed and their last six wickets fell for 43 runs. That left them with a lead of 104 with around 120 overs left to play. Kaia ensured it was not enough for Tuskers to get a victory as his 112 off 269 balls took Rocks to 292 for 4.

West Ham: Neville lauds Dawson’

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville lavished praise on West Ham United centre-back Craig Dawson during the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The lowdown: Last man standing

With central defensive options Issa Diop, Kurt Zouma and long-term absentee Angelo Ogbonna all sidelined, Dawson was the only recognised choice in David Moyes’ much-changed side to face their London rivals.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Making up a new-look back three alongside Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson, following a drab first half without action in what has previously been a pulsating London derby, the second 45 kicked into gear early on and the Hammers were called into defensive action.

However, the 31-year-old had proved to be more than a match for the attack on more than one occasion prior to being dismissed for hauling down Romelu Lukaku inside the area with just minutes remaining on the clock.

The Evening Standard rated his performance as ‘superb’ being undermined by the red card, with big name Sky pundit Neville joining in on the praise during West Ham’s encounter.

The latest: Neville impressed

Speaking as a co-commentator during Sky Sports’ live coverage, Neville was left in awe of the experienced Englishman’s actions at the 50-minute mark.

“Brilliant from Dawson. All the talk before the game was about Dawson being the only centre-back. He’s the only one they needed in the last minute or two. Two really good blocks.”

Ultimately it wasn’t Dawson’s error that cost the visitors a valuable point as Jorginho missed the resulting spot-kick before moments later Christian Pulisic netted beyond Lukasz Fabianski with West Ham without a recognised centre-back.

Overall the ex-Watford man completed seven clearances, seven blocked shots and won 1/1 (100%) of his aerial duels in a 7.30 rated display despite the red card (Sofascore).

The verdict: Outstanding before dismissal

Dawson has been nothing short of a revelation since arriving at the London Stadium and this was another flawless display from the experienced former England Under 21 international before being given his marching orders late on.

So far this season the Rochdale-born ace has made 44 appearances for Moyes’ side, scoring four times for the Irons as he proves to be equally adept in either penalty area and will be a huge miss whilst suspended.

Albeit the Hammers would’ve welcomed back any of Diop, Zouma and Ogbonna with open arms prior to this clash, Dawson has once again proven that he can be relied upon to marshall a backline successfully – even taking into account the dismissal.

Leeds must finally sign Reading’s John Swift

Leeds United may finally have the perfect chance to sign Reading midfielder John Swift amid a major update on his future…

What’s the story?

Reports back in late October from The Sheffield Star, suggested that the Whites, along with fellow Premier League teams Newcastle United and Brentford, have got their eye on the attacking midfielder.

And now, Leeds Live have claimed that Swift is set to end a six-year stay with Reading by leaving the club on a free transfer come the summer.

The report adds that there has been no progress in terms of a new contract being signed, and that Premier League interest has remained over the past few months.

Leeds could axe Mateusz Klich

With Klich now set to turn 32 in June, and having had a very disappointing season by his standards – he’s managed just one goal and two assists in 31 games across all competitions (he had nine goal contributions in the Premier League alone last year) – it could be time for the Whites to finally move on from the Pole.

And in Swift, they could find the ideal goal-scoring midfielder to replace the £20k-a-week ace.

The Reading ace has a track record of being someone who can offer a goal-scoring threat from attacking midfield, managing an impressive 72 goal contributions in 202 games – in fact, his current campaign for Reading has been impressive to say the least, netting 11 goals in the Championship as well as chipping in with a whopping 13 assists too.

Speaking back in August after a 2-1 win over Preston, Royals manager, Veljko Paunovic, said: “Now he’s back, it is important we keep him healthy and motivated as he is now because that will help us a lot.

“He is super talented and he showed an urgency that he wanted to decide the game. The first couple of passes to Azeez and Joao were fantastic vision and execution of the final pass – something we’ve missed in the past. We missed those slick combinations through the middle when we progress forward so that’s something we have to keep up.”

With a record of 43 senior goals to his name in his professional career thus far, Swift could help answer Marsch’s prayers of needing a new goal-scoring midfielder this summer.

Manchester City: Pep Guardiola without Ruben Dias as team news emerges

Pep Guardiola will have to endure a double defensive setback in Manchester City’s quarter-final clash against Atletico Madrid.

The Lowdown: City’s UCL form

Sky Blues fans will be hoping for a strong start to the Champions League quarter-finals in which City kick off their first-leg against Madrid in tonight’s clash at the Etihad.

City destroyed Sporting Lisbon in the opening leg of round 16 with an emphatic 5-0 win, before coasting to a 0-0 stalemate in the return fixture.

Guardiola will be aiming to make amends for his side’s loss in the final last year, in which they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The Latest: Guardiola’s team news

The Catalan boss is set to face a defensive headache in his team selection tonight as both Ruben Dias and Kyle Walker are unavailable for the game, after the latest team news emerged from Manchester Evening News.

Man City will be without centre-back stalwart Dias, who has been missing for around a month now, as the manager confirmed on Friday that he would need another ten days to two weeks to get back up to full fitness.

Walker will also serve the last of his three-match ban against the Spanish outfit, following his red card which he sustained against RB Leipzig.

The Verdict: Dias will be missed

Guardiola’s men will be ready to face a tough Madrid side tonight, who have scored 57 goals in La Liga this season – the Premier League leaders have been solid defensively in the English campaign, having lost just three top-flight games and conceded a mere 18 goals.

Despite this, City would have been hoping that Dias could have made his return in time for the opening leg, as he has been a key figure in the side’s defensive success. He has earned himself praise as “a man mountain”, who could be considered “the best centre back in the world”, with fellow defender John Stones hailing his ‘outstanding’ impact.

The boss will have been praying throughout the international break that his defensive leader could have returned early enough to play tonight, but it looks as though Stones and Aymeric Laporte will have to step up.

– Eu tinha destaque, sim, no futsal.

Graças a Deus deu certo.
