Fast bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and opener Imran Nazir have been recalled to Pakistan’s one-day international squad after two years. Naved and Nazir have become the third and fourth Pakistan players to make comebacks to the national team after cutting ties with the unofficial ICL. Nazir’s inclusion has come at the expense of Salman Butt, whose poor form has been a serious concern for the Pakistan management. However Butt, along with the rest of the squad, has been named in Pakistan’s 30-man probables for the Champions Trophy.Shoaib Akhtar was not picked in either squad because of uncertainty surrounding his match fitness, as Wasim Bari, the PCB director for human resources and administration, had earlier said.Handed a maiden international call-up for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka which starts at the end of this month is Umar Akmal – younger brother of wicketkeeper Kamran – who scored heavily on Pakistan A’s tour of Australia recently. While some national boards have set a ‘cooling period’ before players associated with the ICL are considered for selection, the PCB accepted players into official cricket immediately. “I’m back playing for my country and its a great feeling,” Naved told . “I got the call [on Tuesday] from the PCB and I was delighted to hear the good news”.Naved, 31, last played for Pakistan in the opening match of the 2007 World Cup against West Indies and was not only dropped for the subsequent matches but also omitted for the tours to Abu Dhabi and Scotland. Disenchanted with the set-up in Pakistan, he signed up with the unofficial ICL in February 2008. That virtually ended his career with Pakistan, but when the ICL accepted his resignation before the ICC World Twenty20 in June he found himself up for national selection.”I’ll be leaving for Lahore with my family and then leaving for Colombo on July 24 from Lahore,” said Naved. “I will be as always giving my 100% effort and hope that I can justify my recall to the international team”. Naved has played nine Tests and 62 ODIs for Pakistan.Nazir, 27, recently returned to the official fold after ending his stint with the ICL, where he represented the Lahore Badshahs. Earlier this month Wasim Bari, Pakistan’s interim chairman of selectors, publicly voiced his view that Nazir should have been an automatic choice for the World Twenty20 in England after making himself available for national selection. Nazir had a very successful stint with the Badshahs in the ICL with his explosive batting setting up his team’s title win last year. He last played an ODI against India in Jaipur in November 2007.Umar, 19, scored 283 runs at 94.33 in the unofficial Tests against Australia A and 155 at 51.66 in the three one-dayers that followed. The opener Nasir Jamshed and medium-pacer Rao Iftikhar Anjum, who were not at the World Twenty20, have retained their ODI spots from the series against Australia in the UAE. The ODI series in Sri Lanka will begin on July 30.Mohammad Asif has also been named in the Champions Trophy probables after completing his one-year ban, as have other fast bowlers Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Arafat and 20-year old Mohammad Talha, who played the aborted Test against Sri Lanka in Lahore. Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, who played the last of his eight ODIs in 2008, left-arm fast medium bowler Wahab Riaz and opener Mohammad Hafeez also got recalls. The selectors have also included 23-year-old uncapped left-hand Karachi batsman Shehryar Ghani, who was Pakistan A’s top scorer in the ODIs.Pakistan ODI squad:Younis Khan (capt), Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal (wk), Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Aamer, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, Rao Iftikhar Anjum.Pakistan Champions Trophy probables:Younis Khan (capt), Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal (wk), Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Aamer, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Salman Butt, Khalid Latif, Azhar Ali, Umar Amin, Sheharyar Ghani, Yasir Arafat, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Talha, Sohail Tanvir, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Rehman, Mohammad Hafeez.

Southampton: Stuart Armstrong must start v Leeds

Southampton have not had a particularly good start to their 2021/22 Premier League campaign, with four draws and three defeats in their opening seven games.

One player who has yet to get his season up and running for the Saints and who Ralph Hasenhuttl should be putting in his starting XI to face Leeds United in their next Premier League match is Stuart Armstrong.

On the chalkboard

Having returned to team training prior to Southampton’s previous Premier League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after struggling with a calf muscle issue, we feel that the Scotland international should be in the starting XI to face Marcelo Bielsa’s side next week if he is fit enough to feature for his first match of this season.

Southampton signed Armstrong back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Celtic on a four-year deal for a fee of £7m.

Since then, the 29-year-old – who is currently earning a weekly wage of £50k-per-week according to Spotrac – has made 104 appearances for the Saints across all competitions, in which he has managed to score 14 goals and provide 11 assists.

Last season saw Armstrong, who was once labelled as a “role model” by Hasenhuttl, score four goals and provide five assists in the Premier League, ultimately earning him an overall season rating of 6.82/10, making him Southampton’s sixth-highest rated player according to WhoScored.

Looking ahead to the Leeds clash, we feel that he should definitely be in Hasenhuttl’s starting XI if he’s fit enough to play. He could even provide the team with a suitable replacement for James Ward-Prowse, who was given a red card in the Chelsea game, resulting in him being given a three-match ban.

Only three players contributed to more goals for the Saints last season. One is the suspended club captain and another is Danny Ings, who is no longer at St Mary’s. Therefore, the Austrian manager would certainly be wise to call upon the Scotland international to provide a cutting edge in the final third.

If Armstrong does play a part in the Leeds game and has a positive impact on the team in terms of contributing to a goal, we feel that he could potentially be the player to keep Southampton away from the relegation zone and save their season – if he is trusted to play regularly throughout the rest of the campaign and can match or exceed his 2020/21 goal contributions return.

Nonetheless, whether or not he plays a part against the Whites, we feel that this could still be a great opportunity for Southampton to grab their first league win of the season considering that Marcelo Bielsa’s team have also had a difficult start to their campaign.

England role tempts Buchanan

John Buchanan talks to Alex Brown about his future … and it could be working with the team he spent so much of his career deconstructing

John Buchanan has turned down an approach to take on the position of England head coach, but has held preliminary talks with senior ECB officials regarding the possibility of joining them in a consultancy capacity ahead of this year’s Ashes series.Buchanan until recently held a similar position with Cricket Australia, however his contract as the board’s coaching ambassador has lapsed. He has since worked with the England Lions on their tour of New Zealand, and advised Odgers Ray & Berndtson – the corporate recruiting firm contracted by the ECB to find its new head coach – about the qualities he believes would make a successful England coach.Odgers sought to short-list Buchanan for the coaching position, but the relationship has evolved since he turned down the initial approach. Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, is a known advocate of Buchanan’s coaching philosophies, and the pair have discussed the possibility of him joining the England set-up in a manner not dissimilar to Duncan Fletcher’s role at South Africa.”We have not agreed upon anything formal yet,” Buchanan said. “I’ve had discussions with [ECB national performance director] David Parsons and brief talks with Hugh Morris. Something may eventuate, something may not. It is up to them to decide whether they think I can be of value to them.”As I understand it, my [CA] contract has not been renewed by the general manager of development. Nothing has been formally told to me, but they have not sent me a new contract, so I assume I have been pushed to one side.”The cricket world needs a strong England game. I’ve got some views, thoughts, ideas and opinions that I think can assist them in improving their game. As I have done with cricket in Australia and in the IPL, I hope I can provide these in a way that would make a small contribution to what they hope to achieve.”Buchanan and fellow Australian Tom Moody are among those to have turned down Odgers’ attempts to short-list them for the England coaching position. But unlike Moody, who is content to continue with Western Australia and the Kings XI Punjab for the foreseeable future, Buchanan is amenable to the idea of working with the team he spent so much of his career deconstructing.”The initial approach was to take on the job, but I don’t feel that I could do it justice with my other commitments,” said Buchanan, who also coaches the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. “I would be happy to work with them in some sort of consultancy capacity.I want to try and help world cricket as best I can. I have finished with Cricket Australia, but I still would like to work with them, just as I would like to help English cricket and the IPL”We have held discussions on what that (coaching) role should be, and we will talk about other things on an ongoing basis. Morris is in the Windies at the moment, so communication has been a little difficult. I worked with England for a couple of days in New Zealand. Dene Hills was a former assistant coach of mine, and he asked whether I could spend a bit of time with the England Lions while they were on tour there. I was really impressed with the group of people they had. We had some good discussions.”I want to try and help world cricket as best I can. I have finished with Cricket Australia, but I still would like to work with them, just as I would like to help English cricket and the IPL. I want to grow the game and make it stronger than it is, better than it is.”Buchanan earned a reputation as a lateral thinker during his eight years at the helm of Australia – a trait that was not everyone’s taste – and his penchant for left-field ideas was again evident in his recent advice to the ECB. If resources allowed, Buchanan felt the role of England team director should be divided into two, allowing a traditional cricket coach to join forces with an overseer, who could be recruited from another sport.”It’s a massive job,” he said. “They would obviously be looking at a few people who have coached at international level before. I think a bit of a wildcard could be Ric Charlesworth. He obviously has a job with Australian hockey, but he would be just the kind of person to challenge things and bring new ideas to the job. Football coaches could bring something. We should always be open to new ideas. I have relayed some of my views, but I guess a lot of it will be determined by what sort of role they see the director of cricket filling.”

Railways coach questions players' exclusion

The exclusion of three key Railways players from the Indian women’s squad for the World Cup has disappointed the team’s coach, Vinod Sharma, who said quality had not been the criterion for the selection

The exclusion of three key Railways players – Jaya Sharma, Nooshin Al Khadeer and Preeti Dimri – from the Indian women’s squad for the World Cup has disappointed the team’s coach, Vinod Sharma, who said quality had not been the criterion for the selection.”I am not saying that our players should be selected. I only want the best Indian team to go for the World Cup.” Sharma told the . “I can’t answer the girls when they ask me why they were not picked despite good performances.” Spinners Dimri and Al Khadeer, along with opening batsman Jaya, were overlooked while youngsters Harmanpreet Kaur, Sravnathi Naidu and Poonam Raut got call-ups.Shubhangi Kulkarni, the convenor of the women’s selection panel, said the squad had been picked keeping fielding abilities in mind. But Sharma said Al Khadeer, an offspinner, was a good fielder.Al Khadeer herself was very disappointed and said the exclusion had been unexpected. “I couldn’t have been dropped based on my performance in Australia, where, though I took only three wickets in five games, I was India’s highest wicket-taker,” Al Khadeer told Cricinfo. “I don’t think there are any issues with my fielding either. I also have had a good domestic season so far. I really don’t know what the selectors had in mind while picking the squad and while I am disappointed I am not going to argue about their decisions.”Sharma was also surprised at Jaya’s omission. “It is unfair to bring raw players who will be playing their first international.” Jaya was also not sure why she had not made the cut. “I had injured my shoulder after the England series but had been cleared to play after that for the Challengers and the Australia series,” Jaya said. “I can’t really say why I was left out. I did have some problem while throwing the ball and had been advised two to three weeks of rehab.”The World Cup is a month away and really it was just a matter of time for me to recover. Since I was playing domestic cricket for two to three months, I could not concentrate on the rehab. But I haven’t been given a clear picture of why I was left out. Now I will go to the NCA for some rehab work before going back to the domestic season.”Sharma said Dimri had been a leading bowler during the domestic season. In the inter-zone one-dayers in December, Dimri took eight wickets at 13.75 from four games, including 4 for 30 against South Zone. “It is a shame that her claim has been overlooked.”

Newcastle transfer update on Ampadu

Newcastle United have now reportedly made an approach to sign Ethan Ampadu before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Ampadu considered

According to The Daily Express, the St. James’ Park faithful have been considering a move for either Ampadu or his Chelsea teammate Malang Sarr on loan for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

Steve Bruce is reportedly interested in bringing in another central defender before the window closes.

The Latest: Ampadu approach

Writing in his latest piece for The Northern Echo, Scott Wilson has said that the North East club has now made an approach to the Blues to take Ampadu on loan.

They have inquired about his availability, and the Wales international is expected to leave Stamford Bridge within the next couple of weeks.

Bruce regards him as a ‘potentially valuable addition’ to the defence after the permanent departure of Florian Lejeune, and is now looking at Ampadu after missing out on a loan deal for Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United, who has since gone to Aston Villa.

The Verdict: Sign

Once described as a ‘manager’s dream’ by former Wales boss Ryan Giggs while on international duty in 2018, Ampadu is certainly a player that Bruce could utilise and get the best out of in his current squad.

He has the added experience of playing in the Premier League, mainly while on loan at Sheffield United in the last campaign, and has the added capability of being able to play in the centre of midfield in addition to centre-back (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, Ampadu would be a solid addition to the squad as the Magpies look to get more bodies in as soon as possible.

Steve Howey tips Harry Kane to join Man City on deadline day

While Harry Kane will start the Premier League season on the books of Tottenham Hotspur, Steve Howey is confident the striker will secure a deadline day move to Manchester City.

Kane has made no secret of the fact he wants to leave his boyhood club after growing frustrated with a lack of silverware.

The England captain, who won the Premier League’s Golden Boot and Playmaker awards last season, reportedly missed the start of his pre-season program by failing to return to Hotspur Way last week.

While Kane has refuted claims he refused to return, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed his intentions to sign the frontman if Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is willing to negotiate.

Kane, 28, has scored 166 goals in 245 Premier League appearances but is yet to win any silverware while on Spurs’ books.

Although the north London club would like to retain Kane’s services, former Manchester City defender Howey believes the frontman will get his wish and head to the Etihad Stadium just before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

Howey exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “This is going to be an interesting one and I think it will go down to the wire.

“I don’t think he’ll disappear next week but it could probably be one of those deadline day transfers.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how this one pans out.”
