Goleiros: Denis e Renan Ribeiro
Laterais: Mena, Auro e Matheus Reis
Zagueiros: Rodrigo Caio, Douglas, Lyanco e Lucão
Volantes: João Schmidt, Thiago Mendes, Wesley e Wellington
Meias: Cueva, Daniel e Jean Carlos

Rob Lee admits Bruce is just a Geordie

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who scored 34 Premier League goals for Newcastle United, believes Steve Bruce is not able to do as good a job as he could because he hasn’t been given the tools to do so.

Bruce is currently in his second season as Newcastle manager which has seen him accumulate a win ratio of 29.1%, the worst of his managerial career.

Mike Ashley splashed out on Joelinton for £40 million last summer as well as sanctioning signings such as Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, which has seen Bruce spend just under £100 million in two seasons.

Speaking on how Bruce does not have the sufficient tools to do a good job at Newcastle and how the club’s problems aren’t all down to him, Lee told FFC:

“Bruce hasn’t had the tools and nobody would have at Newcastle.

“We shouldn’t be where we are but it’s not all down to him so let’s not cane him just because he’s a Geordie and wants to be in charge of his boyhood club.”

Bruce arrived from Sheffield Wednesday in 2018 after being at Hillsborough for just six-months before jumping ship.

Newcastle find themselves in a relegation fight which Bruce is confident he is the right man for with just nine games left to play.

Ex-NUFC man comments on Bartley move

Keith Gillespie has told Football FanCast that Newcastle United should not sign Kyle Bartley from West Bromwich Albion this summer.

The Daily Telegraph reported earlier this week that the Magpies are keeping close tabs on Bartley ahead of a potential summer move.

Both West Brom and Newcastle are mired in relegation trouble; the Baggies are 19th, while the Magpies are currently 17th, just two points clear of Fulham.

Burnley are also interested, but any deal between Newcastle and West Brom may depend on the former’s survival as the season comes to a head.

Gillespie played for the club between 1995 and 1998 and he does not believe that any deal will excite the St James’ Park faithful, while he also maintains that a centre-back is not necessarily needed.

He told FFC: “They want the players that are going to excite them and bringing in a centre-half is not going to do that. Defensively, at times, they have been okay, so it’s not something that I would earmark.”

Indeed, Gillespie has insisted that Newcastle actually need more help going forward as they look to score more goals.

Their current top scorer is Callum Wilson, with 10 goals, while only Miguel Almiron has netted five or more.

Gillespie added: “I think you need players further forward, who are going to create, midfielders, maybe, depending on what way you’re going to play, get somebody up alongside Callum Wilson when he’s fit.”

Boyd demands new deals for Gers duo

Kris Boyd believes Glasgow Rangers must offer new deals to Steven Davis and Allan McGregor to keep them at Ibrox beyond the end of the season.

Boyd makes contract claim

Both Davis and McGregor are over 35 and are set to be out of the contract at the end of this season (Transfermarkt).

Speaking to Sky Sports (via Glasgow Times), Boyd has urged the 55-time Scottish champions to offer new deals to the duo. He said:

“There are some players in there who are out of contract – Allan McGregor, Steven Davis – and it’s important, I think, the club get them tied down.

“They have been crucial to everything Rangers have done this season, along with a few others.

“But it’s very, very important that you don’t stand still and you come back to win things.

“The recruitment in the summer is massive, to take Rangers on and consolidate that level of performance – or up it – and go again next season.”

Experience

Given they are fast approaching the end of their careers, Steven Gerrard will not be able to rely on the duo to play every single week. However, they have both played important roles this season as the Gers have ended their 10-year wait for a major trophy and still have something to offer.

The Gers could well be competing in the Champions League next season – McGregor and Davis are two of the few players in the squad who have previously played in Europe’s premier club competition. The advice and guidance they can offer to their younger teammates is priceless. As Boyd says, Ross Wilson and co must make sure the pair are still at Ibrox next term.

Everton fans slam subtle Iwobi dig

Lots of Everton fans have been left to slam Alex Iwobi after he posted a subtle dig at Carlo Ancelotti on his latest Instagram story.

The story was shared by The Toffee Blues on their Twitter page, as the Nigeria international wrote: ‘Always an honour to get a call up for my national team, hopefully I get to play in my preferred position’.

This has been taken as a subtle dig at Ancelotti by several members of the Goodison Park faithful, who played the former Arsenal man as a right wing-back in their most recent 2-0 loss away at Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday evening, and has played him there on more than one occasion so far in the 2020/21 term.

Predominantly a winger by trade, Iwobi is clearly not happy with playing a wing-back role, as he is asked to defend more rather than showcasing his attacking talent in full force.

Nonetheless, it is a concern that should not really be put in the public domain and thus should be kept behind closed doors instead.

Everton fan reaction to Iwobi dig

These Merseyside club supporters slammed his dig on Twitter, with one Toffees fan even going as far as to call the 24-year-old a ‘fraud’:

“Hahaha. Maybe if he could kick a ball he might get a chance.”

Nottm Forest given hope in Luton loss

Nottingham Forest suffered a costly defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to a slender loss to Luton Town at the City Ground.

The loss is particularly worrying considering that Chris Hughton’s men are now just 11 points clear of the relegation zone, with sides below them having as many three matches in hand.

However, there were signs throughout the clash that could give the club reason to be optimistic in avoiding relegation to League One.

Manager Hughton was impressed with how his side managed to create opportunities. Following the game, he said that Forest were “very good”, having some presentable chances to open the scoring before the break.

The statistics agree with that sentiment, with the hosts having had 19 shots throughout the game, forcing Luton stopper Simon Sluga into four saves.

The fact that Forest were creating opportunities is a positive sign. It is, in fact, something that they have managed throughout the majority of the campaign.

At their current rate, the East Midlands side are taking 11.6 shots per game according to WhoScored, which is in fact the sixth-highest in the Championship.

Of course, that does not mean all too much if the team are just attempting pot shots from distance, which to an extent is true. Approximately 40% of Forest’s shots this season have come from outside of the penalty area – only Reading, Barnsley and Huddersfield Town have a higher percentage.

However, judging by the expected goals model (xG), Hughton’s men are actually creating very presentable chances.

They currently possess an xG count of 40.07 which is dramatically higher than their number of actual goals scored, 28.

That disparity in these numbers can come down to one of two aspects: poor fortune i.e. excellent stops from opposition goalkeepers or indeed, poor finishing.

Whilst that poor finishing could potentially hamper Forest for the rest of the season, there will hopefully come a point where the chances indeed start finding the back of the net with more regularity, swiftly moving the club away from the drop zone. After all, they are certainly more creative than any of their relegation rivals.

Hughton’s men just need to keep generating chances at the rate they currently are and their luck in front of goal will hopefully turn.

Derby County: Conway drops damning takeover claim

The Athletic’s Derby County correspondent Ryan Conway participated in a discussion thread with Derby fans ahead of the Rams’ Championship clash with Rotherham United on Wednesday evening.

In this thread, the journalist was asked about the latest news concerning Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan’s ongoing takeover attempt.

The Derby County takeover saga

This takeover received the EFL’s approval in November and two expected dates of completion for the deal have been muted, one in December and one in January, both of which have passed without the deal getting done.

Complications surrounding the takeover resulted in the Rams failing to pay some players’ wages for December on time, which in turn led to Derby being handed a transfer embargo for a portion of the January window.

Conway’s claim on the latest Rams takeover news

In response to this Rams fan who asked him for takeover news, Conway declared that: “It speaks volumes that nobody even bothered to ask about it in the last presser. I think even the journalists are starting to all believe it won’t happen now and think it’s a waste of time asking. The same answers get repeated.”

He went on to explain, with how long the deal has been dragging on for, that if there were a positive update, the club would make it known.

Transfer Tavern take

So, it may be fair to say that the journalist’s takeover comments certainly aren’t promising about the possibility that this deal will actually get over the line.

Perhaps that’s not a massive surprise, given that the takeover has failed to meet its expected date of completion twice and Sheikh Khaled has led failed takeover attempts of clubs like Liverpool and Newcastle United in the past.

The longer this deal drags on, as Conway indicated, the more likely it looks that Derby will join those two Premier League clubs as English sides who this Abu Dhabi royal family member has failed to take over.

In other news, many Derby fans were fuming over Duane Holmes’ departure.

Manager comments on Ibrahima Diallo could mean a huge impact for Saints

Stade Brest manager Olivier Dall’Oglio continues to vocalise his regret of letting Ibrahima Diallo leave the French club this summer. The midfielder joined Southampton in a last minute deal worth £11million, according to BBC Sport, but he is yet to start for his new side yet.

Diallo has been limited to just two cameo appearances for the Saints, due to directly competing with senior player Oriol Romeu. However, Ralph Hasenhuttl will continue to monitor the Frenchman in training and he could tweak his midfield to accommodate the new recruit.

Whenever this decision comes, Southampton will certainly benefit from his presence in the middle of the park. Brest haven’t won a single game since Diallo left for England and Dall’Oglio isn’t hiding away his true feelings.

“The loss of Ibra affects us. We’re very conscious of that,” the manager told Ouest-France. “Ibra took a lot of space in that team, so there’s also some thinking about the future, in the winter transfer window, where we need to strengthen in that area, and I think it risks being a priority.”

A huge boost for Southampton

The Saints are currently in fine form, heading into their next fixture off the back of a win over the Premier League leaders. Now fifth in the table, Southampton will be looking to keep this momentum going in order to ensure a top ten (or maybe higher) position is definitely on the cards this season.

Having Diallo in his ranks will be a huge boost for Hasenhuttl. With a strong and reliable 21-year-old to call upon should he need to, he won’t be short of options in case the worst is to happen.

According to Sofascore, the midfielder averaged two tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 9.8 successful duels per game. These numbers will be of huge help to Southampton’s backline, who are often caught out and aren’t on the same page as the attack. Strong midfield options will keep Hassenhuttl’s scales level, ensuring one part of the team isn’t underperforming compared to another.

Diallo will also provide crucial injury cover and healthy rotation, to not just rest up players but also keep the opposition guessing how the squad will lineup next.
