Tenho meus objetivos no Palmeiras e quero cumpri-los.

Ele me tornou capitão, tenho a confiança dele e eu confio muito no trabalho dele.

É o melhor momento do Palmeiras no Brasileiro?

Rafa Benitez is eager to sign Isco

Everton could secure their next Mikel Arteta after the Toffees linked with a move to bring Real Madrid midfielder Isco to Goodison Park ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

Spanish outlet Defensa Central reported a few months ago that Rafa Benitez was keen for a reunion with the 29-year-old at Goodison Park after managing him at Madrid between 2015 and 2016.

However, Super Deporte have now provided an update on Isco’s situation, claiming that fellow Premier League side Newcastle United and Serie A giants Juventus have joined the race for his signature.

With Los Blancos keen to offload some fringe players ahead of Kylian Mbappe’s expected arrival, and Isco far down Carlo Ancelotti’s pecking order, an imminent exit appears to be on the cards.

Benitez needs him

It’s been many years since Everton had a diminutive, technically gifted, attack-minded Spanish maestro pulling the strings in the middle of the park, with Mikel Arteta the last to do so.

The now Arsenal boss departed the Blues back in 2011, though, and they’ve missed the guile and imagination of a player in his mould ever since.

In Isco, director of football Marcel Brands could finally replace the attributes that Arteta brought to the engine room throughout his six-year stay, providing Benitez with the creativity he needs for a successful season in the process.

The Spain international has played a pivotal part in Madrid’s success over the last few years, scoring 52 goals and providing 56 assists in 342 appearances for the club. Arteta, meanwhile, provided exactly 35 goals and 35 assists in 209 outings for the Merseyside outfit.

Isco’s impressive exploits helped the capital club claim four Champions League crowns, two La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey during his time in Madrid, earning praise from several impressed onlookers, including former international teammate Andres Iniesta.

“He is a fantastic player, with an incredible talent,” Iniesta told reporters back in 2017. “For many years, he has been doing things very well, and he is playing for one of the best teams in the world.

“He is an important player not just in the national team but in his club. He is young and has many years to grow and improve.”

However, injuries and drop-off in form have resulted in Isco being reduced to a bit-part role in recent years, and he’s only been awarded two starts in all competitions during 2021/22, failing to complete a full 90 minutes on either occasion.

With James Rodriguez’s departure leaving a sizeable gap in Benitez’s forward line at Everton, the £13.5m-rated Isco could be the ideal candidate to plug it, adding the extra firepower that the Spanish tactician so evidently needs.

And, in other news…Forget Gbamin: Benitez must unleash £80k-p/w EFC beast, he made a “huge difference”

Evans drops Gerrard Villa interview insight

Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow was blown away by the vision Steven Gerrard set out in his Villa Park interview, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans writes.

The lowdown

Gerrard is preparing to take charge of his first Aston Villa game on Saturday, with Brighton and Hove Albion travelling to the Midlands.

His appointment was made official on 11 November, just four days on from the sacking of Dean Smith.

The Liverpool icon joins from Scottish giants Rangers, where he broke Celtic’s stranglehold with an unbeaten run to the 2020/21 title in what was his first senior managerial role.

The latest

Evans lifts the lid on some of the ‘finer details’ of the ‘five hours of talks’ that took place following Smith’s dismissal.

Gerrard explained how he would make Villa ‘exciting and attractive to watch’, which particularly delighted sporting director Johan Lange.

He also offered a ‘thorough’ analysis of the current squad and a plan for blooding youngsters from the academy.

Purslow apparently regarded it as ‘one of the most engaging’ interviews he’s ever conducted.

“What a start,” Evans wrote in an accompanying tweet.

The verdict

This could well be music to the ears of many Villa fans with the Gerrard era about to get underway.

His promises regarding young players are particularly noteworthy given the strength of Villa’s academy roster.

Cameron Archer might be among those fancying his chances of breaking into the first-team if he can catch the manager’s eye.

Villa handed Gerrard a contract that runs until 2025, which has to be seen as a significant show of faith in his ability to nurture and develop the current squad.

That’s a year longer, for example, than Newcastle’s new owners have initially given Eddie Howe.

In other news, fans react to updates on two midfielders.

Wright justifies himself but questions remain

Compared with their soporific efforts against Scotland on Tuesday, this was an England invigorated under the floodlights at Lord’s

Compared with their soporific efforts against Scotland on Tuesday, this was an England invigorated under the floodlights at Lord’s. In the field they were sharp, none more so than the galloping Ryan Sidebottom, who claimed a brilliant running catch at third man to remove Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 0, while the batting of Luke Wright and Ravi Bopara made a teasing target of 145 look puny.By the time the Lord’s lights had kicked in, England were kicking on, with Wright at last justifying the faith invested in his power-hitting, and Bopara showing once again what a little chutzpah can do at the top of an innings. And yet, just how ready can England really feel for their World Twenty20 campaign, after a puzzling piece of scheduling that landed them their 17th encounter with West Indies in the space of four months?Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say, which perhaps explains the refusal of Chris Gayle to waste his time getting involved in this latest encounter. With 88 from 56 balls in his last outing against Ireland, Gayle clearly felt his bat had talked sufficiently to compensate for the looseness of his tongue in the build-up to the Test series.West Indies’ stand-in captain, Denesh Ramdin confirmed that Gayle had not intended to play any part with the bat despite being named in the 13-man squad for this unofficial contest. “He’s resting today,” said Ramdin. “It was a bit of fun leading the team, with the ball going to all parts of the ground, but hopefully we can get it right with him coming back for the first game. We are a team that can show up on its day, so hopefully we can get it right.”We’re still enjoying playing England,” added Ramdin. “We thought 145 was a competitive total, but the openers came out and went hard at us, and they got the stand that they wanted. The run-rate was really high, and we tried to pull it back but they continued to go hard because they didn’t lose any wickets in the first six [overs].”They ought to have lost a wicket to the first ball after the Powerplays, however, when Bopara spanked Dwayne Bravo to Sulieman Benn at short midwicket. The chance, like so many in the past few months, went begging, and England powered onwards with Bopara, once again, to the fore.”Ravi’s great to bat with,” said Wright. “He’s really come of age of late, the way he’s playing. He’s taken his form from the Test matches to the one-dayers and now to the Twenty20s. He really takes the pressure off when he plays the way he does.”At first that was just as well for Wright, seeing as he took nine deliveries to get off the mark, three of which – from Fidel Edwards – whistled past his flailing bat without any contact being made. “I found it quite hard to start with, I wasn’t seeing it so well, but it was my choice to try and be positive,” said Wright. “I think you’ve sometimes got to pick your bowlers a bit, and target your overs. Fidel was bowling really well, and before Ravi got out we spoke about him being the dangerman. We wanted to see him off and put pressure on the other bowlers, and luckily that came off.”Three spanking sixes from consecutive Kieron Pollard deliveries kicked Wright into top gear, and gave an animated 9000-strong crowd something to cheer about. It was also a timely justification of his selection alongside Bopara, which – assuming there are no surprises for the tournament opener against Netherlands on Friday – will amount to England’s 12th opening combination in 16 Twenty20 internationals.”The guys back me, and want me to express myself and believe in myself, and that’s what I tried to do,” said Wright. “I went away on the Lions tour to New Zealand and got a few hundreds, and I’ve always done well in Twenty20s domestically. I’ve worked hard and it’s got me back into the squad straight away, which I’m delighted with. I’ve now got to try and get consistent and push on from this.”England themselves have got some consistency now – six consecutive victories across three forms of the game, friendly or otherwise, since the start of the international summer. A seventh surely awaits on Friday, regardless of the potency of Dirk Nannes and Ryan ten Doeschate. But after that, are they really prepared to take sides with greater know-how and that extra notch of incentive that proper competitive cricket brings? In sitting out this fixture, Gayle ensured that West Indies have not shown their true colours to England since they departed the Caribbean in April. As an incentivised Scotland suggested at Trent Bridge, it could be a shock to the system when they eventually take the field with a team with a will to win.

Steve Parish made a mistake over Danjuma

Crystal Palace were linked with a move for former Bournemouth winger Arnaut Danjuma over the summer, and the club’s hierarchy may be ruing not signing the 24-year-old just a few months on.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports, the Eagles were amongst Danjuma’s potential suitors in the previous transfer window after he put in a string of impressive performances in the Championship last season.

The Netherlands international was one of the second tier’s standout performers in 2020/21, bagging 15 goals and laying on a further seven assists in 33 appearances for the Cherries.

However, despite Danjuma adding a further two strikes to his tally during the two-legged play-off semi-final against Brentford, his efforts weren’t enough to see off the capital club, meaning Bournemouth were consigned to another year outside of the Premier League.

It led to a tussle for his signature between multiple clubs, but it was Spanish side Villarreal who stumped up the £21.3m asking price to secure the wing wizard’s services, and he’s been in scintillating form ever since.

One of Parish’s biggest Palace mistakes

Since arriving in La Liga, Danjuma has quickly established himself as one of the division’s most exciting attacking talents, bagging four goals in just seven league games, and adding another strike and two assists in three Champions League outings.

His eye-catching performances at club level have also earned to versatile forward a recall to Louis van Gaal’s national team setup where he scored in the 6-0 thrashing of Gibraltar.

It was Danjuma’s first cap for the Oranje since 2018, but it’s unlikely to be his last after his standout showing from the substitutes bench earned glowing praise from the Dutch coach in his post-match interview.

“This was a spectacular substitute by Danjuma,” Van Gaal said. “He deserves to be praised because what he showed was very clever.

“On the left, we have plenty of options; on the right, we don’t. He deserves to be praised. Danjuma had nice, good dribbles. His fellow players were not quite ready for his hard crosses yet.”

Although Palace have made a promising start to the current campaign, no winger within Patrick Vieira’s first-team squad has hit the back of the net from open play.

Wilfried Zaha has bagged two penalties, while Jordan Ayew continues to search for his first goal since November 2020, and although Michael Olise has notched his first goal for the Eagles, he prefers to play through the middle.

Therefore, not signing the £22.5m-rated Danjuma will surely have to go down as one of Steve Parish’s biggest transfer mistakes during his tenure as Palace chairman.

The versatile forward could have been a mainstay of the south London outfit’s attack for many years to come, but now Vieira is left still searching for the final piece of his forward line.

And, in other news…Vieira could unearth the next CPFC prodigy in 20 y/o beast, he’s “one for the future”

New South Wales’ Josh Hazlewood has made it to the Under-19 squad for the one-day series against India next month as well as the preliminary squad for the 2010 U-19 World Cup to be played in Kenya. Mitchell Marsh and Alister McDermott, sons of former Test players Geoff Marsh and Craig McDermott respectively, are also part of both squads.Last year, Hazlewood at 17 became the youngest fast bowler to be picked by his state for a first-class match – against the touring New Zealanders. If picked for Kenya, he will be appearing for his second World Cup. He took six wickets in four games in the 2008 edition in Malaysia. Hazlewood was 6’5″ during the tournament and his coach Brian McFayden expected him to grow a couple of inches. “We see him as a future Australian player,” McFayden had said. The squad for the India series will assemble in Hobart on April 4. The two sides will play three one-dayers and two three-day games between April 7 and April 21 in Hobart and Perth.Geoff Tamblyn, the chairman of Cricket Australia’s National Youth Selection Panel, said the series would provide the players some experience. “The squad to face India provides a great opportunity to all players selected to test their skills and performance against the reigning world champions at under-19 level.”Tamblyn was also pleased with the “exceptionally talented squad” for the World Cup. “The squad contains some players who have tasted state cricket in Australia, one of the strongest domestic competitions in the world,” he said.Under-19 squad to play India:
Sean Abbott, Tim Armstrong, Tom Beaton, Jackson Coleman, Adam Coyte, Luke Doran, Jason Floros, Joel Garrett Josh Hazlewood, Nic Maddinson, Mitchell Marsh, Alister McDermott, Kane Richardson, Tom Triffitt, Adam Zampa.Preliminary World Cup squad:

Nandez had ‘meetings with Tottenham’

Speaking to L’Unione Sarda, via Calciomercato, Cagliari sporting director Stefano Capozucca has lifted the lid on star midfielder Nahitan Nandez as he drops a Tottenham Hotspur revelation.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Nandez summer chase…

Over the summer transfer window, Tottenham became repeatedly linked with the Uruguay international amid their search for more midfield options.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Unrest surrounding club record signing Tanguy Ndombele meant Spurs went on to be mentioned alongside the likes of Joao Palhinha, Didier Zakaria and Corentin Tolisso (Daily Star).

Nandez was another name thought to be on Spurs’ radar with Sky Sports even backing Fabio Paratici’s interest in the player.

The Latest: Capozucca drops Tottenham reveal…

Speaking to L’Unione Sarda (via Calciomercato), Cagliari chief Capozucca, a source undoubtedly very close to Nandez, has confirmed that Spurs were indeed eyeing a move.

He even explains that the Lilywhites have had meetings with the 25-year-old alongside other interested clubs like Inter Milan, Napoli and Roma.

“Nahitan had some requests, Napoli’s latest offensive with a 1 million loan and Cagliari couldn’t accept these offers,” Capozucca admitted.

“Whoever wants it must give it the right value. Nervous Nandez? It must be understood, everyone has the ambition to improve.

“He has had meetings with Tottenham, Inter, Naples and Rome, it is normal to have thought about leaving. Nahitan showed bad mood, but he is a spectacular guy and will always give his best ”.

The Verdict: Return in January?

Tottenham’s most torrid international break in some time could point towards the potential need to weigh more reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Depending on how new Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo continues his start to life in north London, we believe Nandez could be a brilliant reinforcement for him.

The South American can play out wide and as a right-wing back (Sky Sports), even after his natural position in central midfield.

He has also been called ‘amazing’ and ‘unstoppable’ by BBC and ESPN pundit Mina Rzouki (Twitter), so we believe he could be a stellar mid-season capture.

In other news: ‘So excited’, ‘Start him against Palace’…Many Tottenham fans rave over another ‘generational’ talent, find out more here.
