Hair blames politics for Oval row

Darrell Hair, the umpire at the centre of the controversy that led to the abandonment of the 2006 Oval Test between England and Pakistan, has claimed that meddling board officials were to blame for the escalation of the row

Darrell Hair, the umpire at the centre of the controversy that led to the abandonment of the 2006 Oval Test between England and Pakistan, has claimed that meddling board officials were to blame for the escalation of the row, and that the Pakistan team themselves had been ready to accept his decision to dock them five penalty runs for ball-tampering.Speaking in an interview on BBC Test Match Special, Hair recounted the events of that dramatic fourth day, which ended up with the match being awarded to England following Pakistan’s refusal to return to the field following the tea interval. A lengthy stand-off ensued, with Hair and Pakistan’s captain Inzamam-ul-Haq proving especially intransigent in the negotiations that followed, and it wasn’t until 10.30pm that night, some six hours after the last ball had been bowled, that the game was finally declared to be over.Four years later, however, and with the two teams back at The Oval once again, Hair insisted that his penalty award had not initially been a bone of contention. “We played on until tea [so] I suppose you could say by playing on [the players] accepted what happened,” he said. “It wasn’t until they got back into the dressing room that politics got involved. Too many people got involved from Pakistan and from the ECB as well.”I’m not about to name the persons involved – I will in my book – but there is no doubt they got themselves involved when they shouldn’t have, and that further inflamed the situation. The PCB thought they had some allies who would assist them. The Pakistan team accepted the ruling until they got back in the dressing room.”The general assumption around the time of the controversy was that Hair had acted alone in declaring the ball unfit for further use, and that his partner Billy Doctrove – with whom he claimed he no longer has contact – was swept along in the furore without really having a say. Hair, however, denied this vehemently, saying: “He played an equal part. I’d like to see any tape of me frogmarching Billy around.”There was no coercion and those things can’t happen unless both umpires agree. I’m an easy target because strength of character can be mistaken for arrogance or obstinacy. But if Billy had said, ‘I don’t think the condition of the ball had changed’, we would have carried on.”As a result of the furore, Hair spent two years in the international wilderness, before returning to the ICC’s elite panel for two matches of New Zealand’s tour of England in 2008. He claimed, however, that he no longer felt any bitterness at his treatment, even though he his employers chose to make public a series of emails between himself and the umpires manager, Doug Cowie, in which he appeared to demand a lump sum of money in order to go quietly and spare the ICC any further embarrassment.”I got over it many years ago,” he said. “There are a couple of people who worked for the ICC who lied and I don’t have much time for them, but I got back to doing what I wanted to do and I finished umpiring a Test match at Trent Bridge. For me that was the perfect ending. I knew exactly what had happened at the time and I did my job to the best of my ability.”

Gerrard dealt blow on Villa transfer target

Steven Gerrard will be hoping to make his impact on the January transfer window to put into place the vision he has for Aston Villa’s future in the Premier League, but one of his prime targets could now be unobtainable in January.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa have reportedly shown interest in former Hearts defender, Aaron Hickey, who currently plays in the Serie A for Bologna, who has become one of the hottest prospects in Europe with his performances this season, that have clearly caught the eye of former Scottish Premiership manager, Gerrard.

Due to rumoured interest from Aston Villa and Manchester City, Bologna’s sporting director, Walter Sabatini, has put a dampener on the hopes of securing the teeanager’s signature when the transfer window in a few days.

As reported by BirminghamLive, Sabatini said;

“Hickey is a Bologna player, and despite the interest of many clubs, he will 100 per cent remain here.

“Last season was a short one for him because of injury but he has already shown us the great qualities he possesses as a player.

“Bologna are betting a lot on him, and he stays with us.”

Hickey has caught the attention of Premier League clubs thanks to his impactful performances in the Serie A this season, scoring five goals from his full back position in the last 20 appearances, and assisting the Italian side defensively to seven clean sheets so far this season.

Gerrard will be fuming

According to Sport Witness via TuttoSport, Gerrard has been “leading the race” in the interest Aston Villa have shown in the 19-year-old Glaswegian and has been keen on the player for some time, so this statement from Bologna’s sporting director will likely leave the former Rangers manager fuming.

It is understood that Aston Villa want to sign the Scottish teenager to push Matt Targett in his position at the club, with BirminghamLive reporting that Hickey is known by Gerrard’s coaches and Villa scouts have even been over to Italy to scout the youngster.

There is no doubt that the £11.7m-rated player would be a great addition to Gerrard’s Aston Villa side, and would certainly help to offer more creativity from the back, with his competitor for the left-back position at Villa Park, Matt Targett, scoring four fewer goals this season than the potential new signing.

Luckily, in football money talks, so if the Villa manager is seriously interested in signing the left-back, he may have a chance but will need to come up with an offer that Bologna cannot refuse, or postpone going in for his target until the Summer, but with the likes of Manchester City rumoured to be interested in the player too, it could be unwise to leave it too long to make a bid.

Phillip Hughes picked the perfect time to score a century as he improved his chances of coming back into the Test squad in Melbourne. With Ricky Ponting’s sore elbow putting his place in doubt for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan, Australia will be looking for a top-order batsman at least as cover and Hughes showed he was in form with 122 in New South Wales’ 8 for 390 declared against Victoria. After the first day was washed out in Newcastle, Hughes showed he was back in the sort of touch that earned him a Test debut in South Africa with a series of strong cuts and drives. Jamie Cox, the Test selector, was watching as Hughes collected 13 fours and two sixes during his 179-ball stay, although he did benefit from three misses after passing his half-century.Despite Hughes’ strong performance, the Blues’ middle order wasn’t able to capitalise on their strong start, but they were saved by the tail-enders. Phil Jaques and Usman Khawaja went to John Hastings by the time the score was 18 before Hughes and Ben Rohrer put on 120 for the third wicket until Rohrer became the first of three victims for Andrew McDonald.McDonald created problems for David Warner (28) and Daniel Smith (1) while Jon Holland, the left-arm spinner, picked up Hughes, who hit to square leg, and also removed Grant Lambert as the Blues slipped to 7 for 224. However, the captain Moises Henriques pushed forward with 40 before Steve O’Keefe and Mitchell Starc flattened the visitors with a stand of 124 for the ninth wicket.O’Keefe finished with 82 while Starc, the No. 10, had 54 as they enjoyed the bowling and both cleared the fence before the declaration. Victoria were 0 for 5 after four overs in their reply.

Galatasaray eyeing Rangers gem Hagi

A transfer update has emerged on Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi, regarding interest from a European club in luring him away from Ibrox.

What’s the talk?

According to Turkish outlet Sabah Spor, Galatasaray will hold a meeting with the Gers to discuss a deal for the Romania international.

The report does not state any further details, such as a potential fee or Hagi’s thoughts on the move, and simply claims that they are expected to meet with the Scottish giants.

Fans gutted?

Rangers fans will surely be gutted with this update as it suggests that there is strong interest in the mercurial midfielder ahead of the upcoming transfer window. It would be a big blow to lose him halfway through the campaign and Galatasaray are seemingly ready to test the club’s resolve with a move for him.

With aims to actually meet with Rangers instead of just holding interest from afar also indicates that they feel they have a chance of getting a deal done. It would be a waste of their time to enter discussions with the Gers if they did not truly believe that they have the funds to secure his services, which could be worrying for supporters.

Fans will have to hope and pray that Ross Wilson stands firm and does not allow Hagi to leave in the winter window and is able to reject Galatasaray’s advances. It would be a seismic blow for Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad heading into the second half of the campaign as he is a vital member of the team and his absence would leave a hole in the attacking line-up, which could hinder their chances of winning silverware.

Ex-Ibrox head coach Steven Gerrard previously hailed him, saying: “We’re really happy with Ianis Hagi, he’s a joy to work with.

“He’s a student of the game. He’s always looking at areas to improve, whether that be from a physical point of view or tactically or technically. He’s someone you have to drag off the training ground.

“Ianis is always in the analyst department too. He’s never out of the gym, so he’s an absolute dream to work with, very low maintenance. We’re delighted with how he is developing and progressing and we’re happy to have him.”

This suggests that van Bronckhorst will enjoy working with him in the coming months, with his quality on the pitch there for all to see. Hagi has 14 goals and 21 assists in 77 appearances for the Gers, showing that he has the ability to score and create in the final third.

Therefore, fans will understandably be gutted with the prospect of the Turkish side trying to prise him away from Ibrox and it explains why his sale could dampen the club’s chances of winning trophies as his goal contributions could be crucial to winning matches.
