Why Indian players need to be more aware of caste privilege and oppression

A recent incident tells of the need for education in this area

Sidharth Monga23-Jan-2023Stump mics do cricketers a great disservice. A cricket field is no ordinary workplace. All kinds of ugly talk that would earn someone the sack in an ordinary workplace is glorified in cricket. To let viewers listen in and also judge the players for what they say is mixed messaging. As it stands, the stump mic serves no purpose other than providing voyeuristic entertainment. If it was meant to be informative, commentators wouldn’t speak over it. If it is meant purely for cricket, it would be turned down after the shot is played and you have judged how sweet the connection is.That said, without incriminating anyone or virtue-signalling, we can use a recent incident to educate and sensitise ourselves. During the second Test between India and Bangladesh last month, an India player – let’s not guess who, because the person was not visible on camera – called his team-mate a “”, presumably because the latter had misfielded. are a caste-oppressed community of people who made or mended , temporary roofs. This was the only job they were allowed to do because of their caste, which was assigned to them by the accident of birth. However, the word has in recent years become a pejorative for someone who tries hard to be flamboyant. Looking blingy and flashy has been a form of expression and assertion by historically oppressed castes when they manage to earn enough money, but upper castes have looked down on such transformations, assigning the caste name to anything that is “cringe”.Related

Even today, in the local trains of Mumbai, on the streets, in the maidans, even in the supposedly subversive world of rap songs, people, mainly of privileged castes, use “” as a derogatory term for anything or anyone cringeworthy. For example, to someone who prefers the aesthetic of Instagram Reels, TikTok is full of . Or if people see in a local train a man with a streak of blond hair and a colourful shirt, they might call him a .Because the term is so pervasively, casually and commonly used, and now goes beyond just caste, one could probably give this young cricketer the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes people from some states can pick up on popular terms from another part of the country without knowing how the word was derived. Still, if Black rappers use the n-word, it doesn’t become okay for others to use it.It is possible this player doesn’t know the ugly history of the word, but him probably not intending harm doesn’t mean harm is not done. Serious harm of perpetuating prejudice is done.He is hardly alone. During the Covid-19 lockdown, when players started to interview each other on Instagram, Yuvraj Singh, in a chat with Rohit Sharma, referred to Yuzvendra Chahal as a for his “cringe” TikTok videos, to the sound of laughter from Rohit. Again, are a community who, by accident of birth, were and are restricted to cleaning drains and toilets. When the matter blew up, Yuvraj responded with a non-apology, saying he was “misunderstood, which was unwarranted”. He expressed regret “if” he had “unintentionally” hurt someone’s feelings.Again, this is not to suggest Yuvraj is a monster, but he clearly didn’t have any counsel at the time telling him how what was a harmless comment to him hurts a whole community. As is in Bombay, is used as a slur commonly in north India. If a child doesn’t bathe all day, it is pretty normal for their mother to tell them not to be a . Google the term and you will find Bollywood stars using it self-deprecatingly to describe times when they are “shabbily dressed”.Instead of learning something from their abuse of these words, acknowledging historical and current caste oppression, and truly apologising for their ignorance, or worse, bigotry, people often double down and take offence at “misinterpretation” of what they said. These are members of a cricket team that took the knee to support the “Black Lives Matter” movement. They protested in Australia at being racially abused themselves by people in the stands. Imagine the spectators in that instance turning around and saying they were misunderstood, and Cricket Australia doing nothing. In fact, the hurt the Indian players felt at that alleged racial abuse should enable them to empathise with those at the receiving end of caste discrimination back home. Many of them experienced unimaginable hardships in their childhood; in an ideal world, they would be the first ones to empathise.Whenever there is a debate about caste in Indian cricket, a majority of fans of the sport are angered at the mere suggestion there might be discrimination based on caste. They like to imagine the sport is untouched by what goes on in society at large. Of course at the top level there is very little discrimination, because who doesn’t value an elite performer? This is where the caste system is more insidious than racism based on skin colour. It is not easy to look at the faces of players in India’s national team and say it is not representative, though in its history India has fielded less than a handful of players from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, who form about a fourth of India’s population. Only OBC (Other Backward Castes) players make it to the national team on a regular basis.

The description of some white South African players’ childhoods is not too different to those of Indians growing up ignorant of a more deeply entrenched system of discrimination that has endured for hundreds more years than apartheid

Scheduled Castes are the most caste-oppressed people of India. Scheduled Tribes are among those who have inhabited India the longest, preceding the Indus Valley civilisation and the Aryan invasion. They retain their distinct culture and live in separation from other communities, are geographically isolated and socio-economically disadvantaged. Both groups are protected under the constitution of the country.Young Indians are kept away from being educated about caste. When they grow up to be privileged adults, they keep themselves and their offspring shielded from this inconvenient topic.I have spoken to quite a few white South African cricketers who were kids during apartheid. They say they were never informed of what was going on in the country. Whether it is just an attempt to be on the right side of history now that apartheid is unequivocally accepted as an evil system, the description of these white players’ childhoods is not too different to those of Indians growing up ignorant of a more deeply entrenched system of discrimination that has endured for hundreds more years than apartheid. This is not to compare the horrors – apartheid was shorter but actually written in the law – but the “ignorance” of the beneficiaries of the two systems. To say that there is no player of a caste-oppressed background who has been denied opportunities at the highest level is disingenuous because the villages and small towns that Indian cricketers increasingly come from don’t even allow people of these backgrounds to use playgrounds; being able to afford all the facilities and equipment required to become an elite cricketer is a whole different leap altogether. If even at the top, players – officially representing India – can use casteist slurs and not even feel apologetic about it, can you imagine what the attitude of the caste-privileged system is towards caste-oppressed communities? Slurs do not endure if there is no deeper prejudice.Make no mistake, it is a caste-privileged system. I have spoken to a few people in the BCCI to find out if a caste-oppressed person has ever made it to a position of power in the board. Nobody remembers clearly. If such a person had indeed made it and it was such a non-event that it is not remembered, it would be the equivalent of India appointing a Muslim man or a tribal woman or a Dalit man as the president of the country, as they have done in recent years, and not shouting about it from the rooftops.A state official told me there was a time when a couple of officials from the so-called lower castes rose to positions of power in their state association. A superstar cricketer, he said, was quoted in the papers the next day saying something to the effect of: “Now will we have to be controlled by [washermen] and [cobblers]?”The BCCI does a great – sometimes underappreciated – job of conducting the number of matches it does, the academies it sets up, and the systems it has set in place, but it is dipping its feet in a talent pool too shallow for a vast country. There is much more to be done. Educating its players about the ugly history of these seemingly harmless putdowns will be just a start.

Lockie Ferguson revs into IPL's pace elite with spectacular entry

Out of the 27 balls he bowled, seven were over 150kmh in his first match of the tournament

Vishal Dikshit18-Oct-2020″I always wanted to be fast, whatever I was doing – sprinting, bowling. Whatever it might be, I’ve always been very keen to do it fast.” You know who said those words, don’t you, if you watched the Kolkata Knight Riders’ Super Over win against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.Lockie Ferguson not only wanted to be fast at everything but also wanted to emulate the way New Zealand rugby player Christian Cullen would ride around on his Harley Davidson. Ferguson arrived like a Harley himself – figuratively – in the desert of the UAE’s dry lands on Sunday with his tearaway pace and precision to spectacularly run through the Sunrisers line-up, especially in the Super Over. He ran in with steam, like a nicely revved up engine, nailed the yorkers, targeted the stumps from wide of the crease, and used some clever slower deliveries to deceive batsmen in the 27 deliveries he bowled – four overs in the match and three more in the Super Over.Pace has already been the flavour of this IPL, but it took the Knight Riders nine games to give get Ferguson in the XI, while the Delhi Capitals have been benefiting the most from the pace combination of Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada. Their 31 wickets together are the primary reason the Capitals have been among the top two sides this season, fighting closely for the top spot with the Mumbai Indians, whose pace attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, James Pattinson and Trent Boult have taken 36 wickets combined. The Mumbai attack doesn’t have the express pace like the Capitals – although Pattinson (who has been replaced for the last two games by Nathan Coulter-Nile) has breached the 150kmh mark once this IPL – but it’s the use of that pace along with the uncomfortable lengths and variations that makes these fast bowlers unplayable even on surfaces that aren’t traditionally helpful for them. The Knight Riders head coach Brendon McCullum told the TV commentators during the match on Sunday that the way he saw the Capitals and Mumbai lead the table with their pace attack, he thought it was time to unleash Ferguson’s speed from their ranks too.Ferguson struck with his very first ball, with the wicket of Kane Williamson who upper cut a short delivery to third man. That was 137kmh, Ferguson’s engines are just warming up. Now bowling to Jonny Bairstow and 19-year-old Priyam Garg, Ferguson picked up his pace and the two batsmen weren’t able to middle their shots. Edges were flying off Garg’s bat, Bairstow was finding the toe-end of his bat, and they were being beaten by pace anyway. In his next over, Ferguson slipped in a clever slower legcutter to Garg at the stumps, beating the batsman with lack of pace and hitting the top of off. By his third over, all of Ferguson’s cylinders were firing. After a leg-stump yorker hit Warner’s shin for a leg bye, Ferguson sent another yorker down right at the base of the stumps which Manish Pandey missed because of the express pace and looked back at the stumps in disbelief while also checking how the bottom of his bat didn’t block the ball? Because…148.3kmh. After 2.3 overs Ferguson had conceded just five runs and picked up three wickets.”Where was he all this time this season?” exclaimed Ian Bishop on commentary at the end of the over.Ferguson could have also had a fourth wicket in the 18th over had a diving Andre Russell held on to a catch at point of Abdul Samad, and Ferguson ended with 4-0-15-3. Ferguson’s sixth gear was saved for the Super Over though.BCCIHis first ball carried such pace that when Warner missed the outside edge, the ball crashed into the stumps. Two balls later it was Samad at the receiving end…fire it in quick or the slower one? He unleashed a slower legcutter right in the block hole which Samad swung for and missed, and the Sunrisers Super Over lasted all of three deliveries. Out of the 27 balls Ferguson bowled, seven were over 150kmh with a fastest delivery of 152.38kmh.”I’ve been training quote a lot, but obviously I haven’t played in a while so I was pretty nervous,” Ferguson told Shubman Gill in a chat on IPLT20.com after the match.”There’s a slightly bigger side [of the boundary] so I was trying to get them to hit out there [in the death], back my yorker, back my slower ball, and then fortunately got the wickets which is always nice at that stage.”Playing a match after over seven months, it’s never easy for an express pace bowler to deliver like Ferguson did. To keep his body in shape and ready to bowl such overs, he had been training all through the lockdown, doing his strength and conditioning, and running from Monday to Friday every week. Ferguson stays with two other cricketers – Ben Horne and Henry Cooper – in what he calls an “athletic house” that helps him keep fit, and he had been training for the IPL in May itself, when rumours started floating of the tournament being played in September. With Sunil Narine injured and Pat Cummins not picking up too many wickets of late, Ferguson could very well play most of Knight Riders’ remaining matches. All he needs to do is keep shining that Harley he has inside of himself.

"I hated it" – Steven Gerrard names "egotistical losers" in England's Golden Generation

As part of a Golden Generation which proved to be incredibly disappointing, Steven Gerrard has now revealed where his England side went wrong and why he “hated” international duty.

Who was part of England's Golden Generation?

To this day, it beggars belief that a generation involving Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and so much more failed to ever win a trophy. From goal-line controversy in the 2010 World Cup to Rooney’s stamp on Cristiano Ronaldo in 2006, there’s far more moments to forget than there are to savour, but how many stars did this generation really have?

England's Golden Generation divided by club rivalries

To put into context just how many talented players England had at their disposal in the 2000s, their starting line-up when they crashed out against Portugal on penalties in 2006 included Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard, Owen Hargreaves, Ashley Cole, John Terry, David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Rooney. It couldn’t have got much better than that.

Alas, silverware never arrived and the failure of that generation remains one of England’s greatest regrets. It makes the task of the current generation even greater, too.

Whilst the 2000s featured Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Beckham and others, the 2026 World Cup squad is likely to feature Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden. Once again, the pressure is on.

Whether the Three Lions have learned from their mistakes at Euro 2024, which saw them lose against Spain in the final late on, or from their mistakes at the 2022 World Cup, where they crashed out in the semi-final against France, is the big question.

The Golden Generation never quite learned and many have had their say as to why that proved to be the case, including Gerrard. The former England captain has now revealed where his side went wrong and why he “hated” international duty.

Gerrard slams "egotistical losers" in England generation

Speaking about England’s failiure to use the Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard trio, Gerrard dubbed the Golden Generation “egotistical losers” and said he “hated” England duty because of the divide in the camp between club rivals.

The former midfielder said: “I hated it. I didn’t enjoy it. Hated the [hotel] rooms. In my early days, I’d have days where I was down, like low down. Like I’m in this room for seven hours, what am I going to do.

“There was no social media, we didn’t have a DVD player or anything. Channel 1 to 5 or whatever it was on TV. I used to get low and down.

“I used to love the games.

“I used to love playing for England. I was really proud. I used to enjoy the training sessions but it was 90 minutes a day. And then I was just on my own. I didn’t feel part of a team. I didn’t feel connected with my team-mates with England.

“I didn’t feel that with Liverpool. They were the best days of my life. I felt like the staff looked over me, like I felt special. I felt like I couldn’t wait to get there. With England, I just wanted the games and the training sessions and then to be away.”

Nottingham Forest now eyeing £15m Europa League midfielder after Anderson update

Nottingham Forest are now targeting an “incredible” Europa League midfielder, amid Elliot Anderson continuing to attract attention from some top clubs.

Anderson's City Ground future up in the air

Forest could have their work cut out trying to keep hold of Anderson, given that the midfielder is of major interest to the Premier League’s biggest clubs, with it recently being revealed that Manchester United have identified him as their number one target.

Manchester City are currently the favourites to win the race for the former Newcastle United man, however, with the Blues ready to hijack their rivals, given that Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer, and there is a feeling that a deal could be possible for a fee of £88m.

Alex Crook has also revealed that United would probably have to fork out a club-record fee to sign the England international, with the Tricky Trees in a strong negotiating position, given that he remains under contract until 2029.

With Anderson’s future at the City Ground up in the air, Nottingham Forest have now started to run the rule over potential new additions in midfield, according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states they are now targeting Lyon star Tyler Morton.

Morton has put in some eye-catching performances since moving to the Ligue 1 club for £15m in the summer, and he could now be in line for a swift return to the Premier League, with the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion also keen.

Lyon are reluctant to sell the midfielder, but cashing-in for a higher price than they paid might be too good an opportunity to turn down, considering their financial difficulties, so the door could be open for a move to Forest.

"Incredible" Morton now ready to prove himself in England

The 23-year-old never really managed to make the grade at Liverpool, being shipped out on loan to Hull City and Blackburn Rovers, and never making a Premier League appearance, but he has proven he’s now ready to test himself in England.

The Englishman has emerged as a key player for Lyon in Ligue 1, chipping in with one goal and one assist in 12 outings, while also putting in a solid performance in his most recent Europa League match, with Lyon battering Maccabi Tel Aviv 6-0.

Journalist Bence Bocsak is clearly a big admirer of the Wallasey-born midfielder too, saying: “Out of all the young players who left Liverpool this summer I’m absolutely convinced Tyler Morton is the most likely to return. He’s a fantastic footballer. Incredible IQ.”

While Arne Slot’s side making a move would be understandable, with any luck Nottingham Forest will be able to win the race for Morton’s signature, as he could be a fantastic addition to Sean Dyche’s squad.

Elly De La Cruz Unapologetically Breaks Unwritten Rule in Reds' Loss to Brewers

Coming off an MLB record three straight losses by a score of 1-0, the Cincinnati Reds were in desperate need of a spark Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. And as he often does, Elly De La Cruz tried to provide that.

The Reds' offense was sputtering again at American Family Field, as they were being no-hit by Brewers left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander through five innings. Batting in the top of the sixth inning, De La Cruz laid down a bunt on the first pitch of his at-bat—a big no-no in the unwritten rules of baseball.

Although it was just the sixth inning—and not the ninth, when it would be unforgivable—Alexander did not appear too pleased with De La Cruz's bunt attempt to try to break up his no-hitter.

Alexander left the game soon after with the no-hitter still intact, holding the Reds without a hit or a run through 5 2/3 innings. Cincinnati went on to break up the no-hitter in the seventh when Gavin Lux singled to center field off Milwaukee reliever Abner Uribe.

In the eighth inning, Cincinnati scored two runs to finally snap its scoreless streak at 35 innings, the club's longest drought without a run since the 1946 team was held off the scoreboard in 37 straight innings.

The Reds will return to the diamond Saturday for a rematch against the Brewers in Milwaukee. Brady Singer will take the mound for Cincinnati, while Elvin Rodriguez will toe the rubber for the Brewers.

'Batting always one step behind' but captain Shai Hope happy with bowling attack

Following the 5-0 T20I loss to Australia, the West Indies captain bemoaned his team’s consistency

West Indies captain Shai Hope has bemoaned his side’s inability to put together a complete game with the bat after they were swept 5-0 by Australia in the T20I series. The visitors completed a three-wicket victory in the final match in St Kitts, after West Indies had been bowled out for 170 – the lowest total of the series. They reduced Australia to 60 for 4 inside the powerplay, and Akeal Hosein later took 3 for 17, but the loss of Alzarri Joseph to injury one ball into his third over removed a vital part of their attack. The first three matches of the series had been characterised by West Indies being unable to build on promising starts. In the opening match in Jamaica, they were 123 for 1 in the 13th over but managed just 189. In the second, 63 for 0 became 172 for 8. When the series moved to St Kitts, Hope and Brandon King put on 125 for the first wicket, but the middle order couldn’t flourish.Related

In the last two matches, they somewhat overturned their poor starts – 67 for 4 became 205 and 9 and 32 for 3 became 170 – but on all occasions, Australia were able to get home with room to spare.”I just didn’t think we put together a proper batting display,” Hope said at the post-match presentation. “We either started well and finished poorly or the other way around. When you’re playing against quality opposition like Australia, you’ve got to put things together for a more complete game.Alzarri Joseph was injured one ball into his third over•Randy Brooks/AFP via Getty Images

“As a batting group, we didn’t really give ourselves the best chance to put a big score on the board consistently. And that’s probably where we fell short… We’ve always been one step behind the eight ball.”Hope wore a rueful smile when asked about the fact that his team didn’t get the chance to chase once in the series as Mitchell Marsh won all five tosses.”I think here in the Caribbean, we all know the stats show chasing is always the better thing to do,” he said. “Whether it’s the dew factor, wind factor, you always have that scoreboard in front of you, so you have an idea of how to go about the chase. But it’s something that I can’t control. Unfortunately, I didn’t win any [tosses]… It’s just one of those things for us.”However, despite the scoreline, Hope did see signs of encouragement from his bowling attack as the series developed: Jediah Blades, the young left-arm seamer, took three wickets in the fourth match. Alzarri Joseph’s pace made an impact in the final game too, before he was forced off the field. Hosein impressed after a belated entry with the ball on Monday.Jediah Blades struck crucial blows in the final match•Randy Brooks/AFP via Getty Images

“We understood the struggles of bowling spin here on this ground and surface,” he said. “But [Hosein] is a quality bowler and we just backed him to come and do the job, and he did exceptionally well for that four-over spell. Just unfortunate that, again, we didn’t have as many runs on the board as we would have liked.”I still must commend the guys for the effort that they showed in the back end, to give ourselves a chance to win the game. But once you don’t have that many runs on the board, then you [have] got to hope everything goes perfectly in the field. It just didn’t happen for us.”There is not much time for Hope and his team to reflect. West Indies face a quick turnaround before they play Pakistan in the first of the three T20Is in Florida on Thursday.”I think that we’re a little bit clearer in the bowling unit,” Hope said of what can be taken from this series. “We certainly executed a lot better than we did in the first few games. We’ve got to put this one behind us, and look ahead for the Pakistan series, and see where we can get that combination and that success going.”
