If only Arsenal’s present was ever as good as their future

How many false dawns can there be before you begin to believe that the sun won’t rise?

At Arsenal, it’s hard to count. But it seems that yet again reality has failed to align with the future that we’d expected. However, I’m not sure if it’s even expectation anymore. Hope, would be a better word. With Arsenal, we hope that the future will be brighter. We hope that tomorrow will be better than today.

But in the end, that’s all it is: hope. Because the reality is never as good as the future promised at the Emirates. And even the present is starting to look a lot bleaker than the past.

Francis Jeffers, Jermaine Pennant, Jeremie Allidiere, Justin Hoyte, Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela. All were once reasons to believe that tomorrow will be better. When Manchester United were winning tittles. When Chelsea were winning titles. And when the titles were going to Manchester again.

Arsenal’s future remained bright. Perhaps, even brighter than all the others.

‘You just wait until the stadium is built. You just wait until Financial Fairplay comes into force. You just wait until Benik Afobe scores 20 goals a season. You just wait until Sir Alex Ferguson is gone.’

And so we waited. And in darkness we remain.

Today, it’s the turn of Gedion Zalalem and Serge Gnabry to carry the torch for hope. To be that shining beacon. To be the reason to believe. But hope is no longer enough for Arsenal.

‘We’ve had our hope. It’s overrated. Now let’s have some glory.’

Arsenal fans have long satisfied themselves on just the idea of something good alone. But the difference between this idea and reality this season has been so stark as to leave it shattered.

6-3 to Man City. 5-1 to Liverpool. 6-0 to Chelsea. The idea of Serge Gnabry terrorising defences in 3 years time is no longer sufficient. One cannot sustain themselves on hope for the future alone when the present so consistently diverges from it.

After all, it’s the present that counts. The idea of future is just the best guess at how things might turn out. It’s intangible. It doesn’t mean anything. You can’t judge a club on how their future looks. You can only make judgments on the past.

And the past has been a disappointment. In every one of the last 8 years there was reason to believe that the next one would be better. And every year reality has made fools of us.

Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Robin van Persie – they all left.

Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain, Julian Draxler – they never came.

Reality has been at odds with expectations for so long so to leave us bereft of hope, of expectations, of promise. All except Arsene Wenger.

Wenger believes in his players. It’s part of what has made him such a successful manager. Arsenal have been able to play attractive football because Wenger has given them the confidence to do so. And instilling this belief can go along way to making it self-fulfilling.

But the players can only believe for so long when reality consistently suggests different. Arsene Wenger talked of nerves being at fault for Arsenal’s heavy away defeats in the Premier League this season. But it’s no surprise the players were nervous. They had been sent out to play in an open style that had already proved itself unsuccessful with nothing more than hope that this time things would be different.

But there was no logical reason to believe that it would be. And it wasn’t.

Arsene Wenger may be the last man at the Emirates to stand by this belief. To be able to convince himself that tomorrow will be better than today. To still be able to hope.

But at Arsenal, the sun never rises quite as brightly tomorrow. And today we are left to wonder whether it will ever rise at all.

Francis says Stoke need to continue to improve

coaching consultant, Gerry Francis insists that the club have yet to prove that they are an established Premier League side.

Since promotion in 2008, Stoke have had a mixture of views from fellow football fans and at times their long ball game has come under scrutiny.

Francis has been at the club for the past five seasons and despite the fact that European football has found its way to the Potteries, Francis still believes Stoke need to prove they are fully merited for a place among England’s elite.

“It’s not true to say we are established because we haven’t finished in the top half of the table yet,” the former Spurs boss told Staffordshire news.

“It’s the hardest league in the world to stay in. There’s been a lot of teams over the years that have come up and gone down again. And it’s going to be even tougher this year.

“Every year we have to try and improve.”

Francis, who joined Stoke soon after the first time the club got promoted, didn’t envisage still being there today.

“I was only going to come back from retirement for one season.

“But it’s been a hugely successful time and I’ve loved it. It’s been really enjoyable.”

Francis sits in the director’s box, and is in one of the ideal positions to judge the continuing support from the crowds.

“Our fans are the noisiest I’ve heard and I’ve been around a while.

“It’s vital they carry that on. You still need that help and support which has made our home record, in particular, so good over the years,” he added.

Rangers fans are keen on a short-term deal for defender Gareth McAuley

Rangers supporters are keen on bringing West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley to Ibrox this summer, after he was linked with a move to the club earlier this week.

Rangers badly need defensive improvements this summer after conceding far too many goals in the Scottish Premiership last season and despite being 38 years of age, are said to fancy a deal for McAuley.

The Daily Record reported that he is a target for Director of Football Mark Allen, after his contract expired at the relegated Baggies.

With over 200 career Premier League appearances and dozens of caps for Northern Ireland, he is as experience as they come at the top level and could bring steely determination to a lightweight defensive line.

However, at 38 years of age, there’s always an element of risk that his days performing consistently week-to-week are coming to an end.

Supporters seem eager regardless, believing he could be a perfect defensive partner for the potentially incoming Connor Goldson.

Newcastle United turn attention to Iheanacho, fans react

Newcastle United have been a regular feature in the transfer gossip pages this month as they appear to be in the hunt for a new striker.

In 24 Premier League games, Rafael Benitez’s side have managed to score just 22 times.

The manager has kept faith with Joselu and Dwight Gayle, but the pair have only found the back of the net four and three times respectively.

Numerous attacking stars have been linked with a move to St James’ Park, the most recent of which being Nicolai Jorgensen from Feyenoord.

So far, the club have been struggling to get a deal over the line and Sky Sports claims that the North-East outfit recently had a £15m bid rejected by the Dutch outfit.

Now, The Mirror reports that Newcastle are looking a little closer to home by considering a move for Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Nigerian international had a slow start to his career at the Foxes following his summer switch from Manchester City, but in his last two outings – both in the FA Cup – the forward has scored four times.

Video Game Review: 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

EA Sports’ 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is a must-have purchase for any genuine football fan who loves to bask in the splendour of the world’s biggest sporting spectacle.

Released on XBOX 360 and PS3 as opposed to fourth generation consoles given low-rate adoption rates in the host nation of Brazil, this means many more people can mimic some Messi magic, serve up some slick football with Spain or conquer the competition with Colombia.

But isn’t it just FIFA 14 with more international teams I hear you cry? 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil offers gamers a fun-filled, arcade-like experience which captures the colour, excitement and nerves surrounding the tournament, all in one tightly-packaged offering.

The gameplay feels different from FIFA 14 in the way that dribbling, increased accuracy in passing and players’ first touches play out. This is not to mention more game modes than ever before with the ever-popular Captain Your County returning, refined and slicker than previous instalments.

With matches taking place within all of Brazil’s 12 official licensed stadia, including the renovated football Mecca that is the Maracana, not to mention realistic manager graphics being retained – yes, you can see Roy Hodgson fall to his knees with joy – this all distinguishes the title from FIFA for cynical gamers.

Each exhibition match is laced with caps of how shall we say – lively and colourful supporters bouncing up and down – with small previews of the ever-popular fan parks around the globe illuminating feelings of suspense and jubilation during the in-play.

Sure; militant fans will instantly recognise that Diego Costa is missing from Spain’s roster and Steven Taylor features in England’s squad despite never making a first team appearance for the Three Lions but with the accurate roster updates to come, has FIFA ever offered you the chance to play as China against Kyrgyzstan?

Villas-Boas pledges to attack United

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has stressed that his side will attack Manchester United this weekend.

The north London outfit travel to Old Trafford having not won there since 1989, but the Portuguese coach is eager for his side to take the game to the hosts.

“That is the way I like my teams to play,” Villas-Boas told reporters, published on Sky Sports.

“We obviously know that it is extremely difficult there, but that doesn’t mean that you might not be given a chance when you play in an attacking way.

“In the end it’s about taking your opportunities. Had Chelsea scored then maybe the result would have been different, so to try to get a result against United will be excellent for us.

“It would make us very proud to go there and get a win that would shorten the distance to the top.

“That would hopefully help us profit in some way from the clash between Arsenal and Chelsea.

“We can’t run away from our responsibilities. The statistics are there. We hope to break them one day and hopefully it will be on Saturday,” he concluded.

Tottenham fans love swap deal to grab Perisic

According to Italian reports, Inter Milan could offer Ivan Perisic to Spurs to secure Mousa Dembele this summer, and Tottenham fans are loving the idea.

Tottenham seem resigned to losing Mousa Dembele this summer, but reports in Italy suggest they could get Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic as part of the deal.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Calciomercato), Inter Milan will look to beat AC Milan, Napoli and Juventus in the race for Dembele by offering up Perisic, who was reported as a Tottenham target earlier this summer.

Perisic, who grabbed 11 goals and nine assists for Inter this season, is expected to star at this summer’s World Cup for Croatia.

The powerful winger was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United last year, and would be a massive coup for Spurs, especially considering Dembele could leave for free if they keep him until next summer.

Pochettino is desperate for some more firepower up front, and the Croatian international’s mixture of versatility, pace, creativity and goals could basically give Spurs another Heung-min Son.

Both Perisic and Son can play with two feet, from the wing or through central areas, both are unstoppable at full pelt, and both have far superior end product to the average winger. The Croatian could be even be considered to be an upgraded version of Son, as he has been performing consistently for longer than the extremely popular South Korean.

Tottenham fans don’t want to lose Dembele, but they all agree getting Perisic as part of the deal would soften the blow, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

In Focus: Retaining talents like James Tavernier is key to Rangers revival

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers defender James Tavernier has shut down reports he could be leaving the club this January and has reiterated his desire to win trophies at Ibrox.

What’s the story?

The paper say that he’s been a target for the likes of Sunderland and Reading this month, leading to speculation that he could be leaving Glasgow two-and-a-half years after joining from Newcastle United.

However, the player has been quick to point out he sees his future at Ibrox in what will be a big boost to Graeme Murty and the club’s supporters.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the English full-back said:

I don’t like to get into speculation about my deal. I’m still under contract for another 18 months so I’m really happy here. It’s totally down to the club if they want to extend it. I’ll have to wait and see. However, I’m fully committed to Rangers. I’m still learning here and I’m still growing here. I came here to win trophies. Also, in all the Old Firm games I’ve played, I’ve only been on the winning side once so far. I want to win some more of them. I still have unfinished business as a Rangers player.

Those are words that are likely to go down well with Rangers supporters.

Can the player and his club show Celtic they mean business in the second half of the season?

Rangers revival

What Rangers fans crave most of all is major silverware, something that haven’t managed to achieve over the last few years. In the long-term, it’s only through retaining talents like James Tavernier that this is going to be possible.

The Ibrox side have made some shrewd moves in the January transfer window, but just as important is sorting out the contract situations of established stars.

Danny Wilson is set to leave the club with just six months left on his deal and other players’ contracts run out this summer too.

Tavernier is clearly committed to the Rangers cause and the club should reciprocate and leave him in no doubt he is wanted at Ibrox by handing him a new contract.

Liverpool and Arsenal fans react to referee shocker

Howard Webb has made the headlines again after a controversial refereeing display in the FA Cup fifth round tie between Arsenal and Liverpool yesterday.

The World Cup-bound official was widely accused of biased officiating in favour of Arsenal after failing to award Liverpool a penalty when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain brutally floored Luis Suarez in the penalty box.

And he’s no stranger to being in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, which suggests he enjoys being the centre of attention, particularly as he knows he is the FA’s prodigal son who will be representing the country in this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

But yesterday’s controversy at the Emirates had thousands of fans taking to Twitter to condemn his performance and question his reputation as one of the world’s best referees…

Brendan Rodgers prioritising the Premier League

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has stated that he is prioritising the Premier League this season, and will field a scratch team against Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday.

With a clash against rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, the Northern Irish manager has left first-team players Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Pepe Reina, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Martin Kelly at home, with a group of youngsters travelling to Switzerland.

Rodgers has defended his team selection but feels he is acting in the club’s best interests.

“I can understand why people would perceive us as not taking it seriously but I will always do what is in the best interests of the football club,” Rodgers is quoted as saying in Sky Sports.

“There is no doubt the Premier League is our number one priority, I’ve made that clear from the off with the position with our squad.

“I look at Real Madrid v Manchester City last night and Samir Nasri came off with an injury but they have a massive squad who can accommodate that.

“If I lose some of my key players that can make it very difficult for us for the next two or three months.

“There were parts of the game against Arsenal (after their Europa League play-off last month) where we were a bit leggy so we have to make sure we are all firing for Sunday.

“No matter what the perception is I know in my own mind I’ve brought a team here which has a mixture of experience and talented young players.

“I am fully aware that when you pull on a Liverpool shirt you are expected to win the games so I’ve brought a team I believe can win the game,” he concluded.
