Rangers vs Hibernian in cup semi-final

Some Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing over some news involving the Premier Sports Cup.

As per the official Twitter page of the Ibrox faithful, Steven Gerrard’s team will now play Hibernian in the semi-final for a place in the final of the competition.

The tie will be played on the weekend of November 20th-21st, and it means that they avoid their bitter rivals Celtic until the final, should they both end up going through.

The Hoops will now face St. Johnstone in what promises to be two very interesting set of fixtures.

Of course, the one monkey on Gerrard’s back at the moment is that he has not yet a Scottish Cup while managing the Gers, and he may be thinking that avoiding Celtic until the final may give him his best chance of winning this time around.

Arsenal could sign Aurier

Journalist Ekrem Konur has revealed that Serge Aurier has been offered to Arsenal despite only leaving rivals Tottenham Hotspur three days ago.

The Lowdown: All change at N17

Aurier departed Spurs on transfer deadline day following the arrival of Emerson Royal from Barcelona, leaving the former-PSG man third choice in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

The right-back hadn’t featured for the north London outfit since their 3-1 defeat at Leeds United in May and has found minutes hard to come by at the start of the 2021/22 season, with Nuno choosing to go with Japhet Tanganga in all three of their opening league games.

Following his release, Aurier is now free to move to a new club and Arsenal could be a likely destination for the 28-year-old given their troublesome start to the campaign.

The latest: Talks can begin

Konur stated on his Twitter that Aurier ‘has been offered to Arsenal’ and the Gunners can ‘start talks with the player’, despite Tuesday’s deadline.

After loaning Hector Bellerin out to Real Betis, Arsenal have only Cedric Soares to play at right-back, with Calum Chambers filling in when required.

The journalist’s claim that the former-Spurs man has been offered to Arsenal, after making over 100 appearances for the Lillywhites, will come as a shock to both sets of fans in north London.

The verdict: Short-term solution

The potential arrival of Aurier at the Emirates Stadium is a quick fix for Mikel Arteta’s side, who have leaked nine goals in their opening three games and sit bottom of the table.

Since his arrival from Southampton, Cedric has failed to add that security needed whilst Chambers’ best position is at centre-half.

With Bellerin’s departure confirmed, the arrival of Aurier would add experience and quality to a struggling backline for the North London side.

And while the former PSG man may be an upgrade on the current options available to Arteta, Spurs fans would surely enjoy seeing their cast-offs brought in to rescue Arsenal’s perilous early season form.

Nandez had ‘meetings with Tottenham’

Speaking to L’Unione Sarda, via Calciomercato, Cagliari sporting director Stefano Capozucca has lifted the lid on star midfielder Nahitan Nandez as he drops a Tottenham Hotspur revelation.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Nandez summer chase…

Over the summer transfer window, Tottenham became repeatedly linked with the Uruguay international amid their search for more midfield options.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Unrest surrounding club record signing Tanguy Ndombele meant Spurs went on to be mentioned alongside the likes of Joao Palhinha, Didier Zakaria and Corentin Tolisso (Daily Star).

Nandez was another name thought to be on Spurs’ radar with Sky Sports even backing Fabio Paratici’s interest in the player.

The Latest: Capozucca drops Tottenham reveal…

Speaking to L’Unione Sarda (via Calciomercato), Cagliari chief Capozucca, a source undoubtedly very close to Nandez, has confirmed that Spurs were indeed eyeing a move.

He even explains that the Lilywhites have had meetings with the 25-year-old alongside other interested clubs like Inter Milan, Napoli and Roma.

“Nahitan had some requests, Napoli’s latest offensive with a 1 million loan and Cagliari couldn’t accept these offers,” Capozucca admitted.

“Whoever wants it must give it the right value. Nervous Nandez? It must be understood, everyone has the ambition to improve.

“He has had meetings with Tottenham, Inter, Naples and Rome, it is normal to have thought about leaving. Nahitan showed bad mood, but he is a spectacular guy and will always give his best ”.

The Verdict: Return in January?

Tottenham’s most torrid international break in some time could point towards the potential need to weigh more reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Depending on how new Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo continues his start to life in north London, we believe Nandez could be a brilliant reinforcement for him.

The South American can play out wide and as a right-wing back (Sky Sports), even after his natural position in central midfield.

He has also been called ‘amazing’ and ‘unstoppable’ by BBC and ESPN pundit Mina Rzouki (Twitter), so we believe he could be a stellar mid-season capture.

Leeds set for Ronaldo Vieira windfall

Leeds United are set to receive an injection of cash from Ronaldo Vieira’s move to Sheffield United, according to Samp News 24.

The lowdown

Vieira left Leeds to join the Serie A outfit in the 2018 summer transfer window. He’d racked up 63 Championship appearances for the Whites at the tender age of 20 (via BBC Sport).

Having played 44 games for Sampdoria since, he’s now poised to return to England. Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United have agreed a fee, and he is due to travel to the city to put the finishing touches to the deal.

Blades manager Slavisa Jokanovic suggested ahead of his side’s Championship clash with Birmingham City that the deal was imminent, with news ‘in these next few hours’.

The latest

The report states that Leeds are entitled to 10 per cent of the fee paid by United to land Vieira. Sampdoria agreed to the sell-on clause, they say, to ‘qualify for an initial discount’.

It is not clear exactly what the fee will be at this moment in time, but the Whites are sure to receive a small boost to their transfer kitty.

The verdict

Whilst this cash influx won’t be a game-changer, it should be viewed simply as a case of every little helps.

Leeds have spent £26.82million so far this summer, signing Jack Harrison permanently and adding Junior Firpo and Kristoffer Klaesson to their ranks.

The Vieira deal will trigger the first real transfer windfall for Leeds this summer, with no money generated through sales. That should perhaps be their next focus, because the squad could do with a top-drawer central midfielder if it’s to truly mount a European challenge, something that won’t come cheap.

In other news, Leeds have been dealt a blow ahead of their season opener.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Will Hughes update

Crystal Palace have had a £5m offer for Watford midfielder Will Hughes rejected, according to The Sun (August 17, page 51), cited by CPFC Transfers HQ on Twitter.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace fans have been reacting to the development on social media.

The 26-year-old is into the final 12 months of his Vicarage Road contract and has rejected a new five-year deal with the Hornets earlier this summer.

It is thought that the central midfielder’s representatives are actively looking at alternative options, with Hughes demoted to the club’s Under-23s last month.

The Eagles want a midfielder and two forwards between now and the end of the month to bolster Patrick Vieira’s squad, and it appears as if they have firmed up their interest in Hughes.

Palace have had an opening offer of £5m turned down but have no intention of increasing their bid, with the report claiming Watford are holding out for £12m.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared the development regarding Hughes on social media on Tuesday morning.

This is what these Eagles supporters had to say in reply…

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Patrick van Aanholt exit

Crystal Palace confirmed Patrick van Aanholt’s Selhurst Park exit on Wednesday afternoon.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace fans have been giving their thoughts to the club’s official post.

The Eagles had 11 senior players out of contract at the beginning of the month, with van Aanholt becoming the latest to have his exit announced by the club.

The 30-year-old, who joined the club in 2017 from Sunderland, made 134 appearances during his Selhurst Park stay and has now signed for Turkish side Galatasaray on a three-year deal.

Patrick Vieira now has just Tyrick Mitchell at left-back, with Palace’s major transfer business set to be completed with the arrival of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Palace fans react

Palace’s post regarding van Aanholt on Wednesday simply read ‘thank you for everything, Patrick’.

This is what these Eagles supporters had to say in reply, with many happy at his exit, whereas one fan called him ‘terrific’.

Leicester City must move for Ozan Kabak

Leicester City suffered a devastating blow during Tuesday night’s game against Villarreal.

What’s the story?

Highly-rated centre-back Wesley Fofana suffered a broken leg following a horrific challenge from Fernando Nino, with the 20-year-old confirming his injury from a hospital bed on Twitter.

The youngster’s fractured fibula is likely to keep him sidelined for the majority of the upcoming campaign, meaning Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers must sign a replacement over the coming weeks.

With former club captain Wes Morgan retiring after 2020/21, the Foxes had already been heavily linked with Schalke defender Ozan Kabak in the current window and the Turkey international’s arrival at the King Power Stadium would certainly soften the blow of Fofana’s recent setback.

Ozan Kabak can soften the injury blow

Kabak already has experience of playing in the Premier League following a fairly successful loan spell at Liverpool in the second half of last season, where he made 13 appearances in all competitions.

The Reds turned to the youngster to solve their injury crisis in the January window, and his impressive performances saw Jurgen Klopp label the £22.5m-rated gem a “big prospect”.

However, his solid displays weren’t enough to persuade the Anfield outfit to make his move to Merseyside permanent, opting to sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig instead.

While Kabak was enjoying himself on English shores, though, his parent club Schalke suffered relegation from the Bundesliga in dramatic fashion.

The German outfit’s perils mean they’re desperate to offload one of their highest earners in order to balance the books before the transfer window shuts, with a recent report even claiming they could even release their prized asset if a suitable buyer doesn’t come forward.

Therefore, with Fofana’s injury setback leaving Leicester with just two recognised central defenders in their first-team squad in the shape of Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu, Rodgers surely has to swoop for Kabak.

He’s young, full of potential, has Premier League experience, and will be available for a bargain price. It’s a transfer that makes sense for multiple reasons, but it remains to be seen whether the FA Cup holders make their move.

And, in other news…Leicester handed potential transfer boost over 11-goal “genius”, fans surely buzzing

Celtic: Kyle Edwards update emerges

Celtic have stepped up their plans to sign former West Brom winger Kyle Edwards this summer, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: 2020 links

Edwards, who is now a free agent after his Baggies deal expired on July 1, was linked with a move to Celtic last December.

The 23-year-old was wanted on loan by the Hoops back then, but the club’s only winter window addition was Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny.

Celtic were working on a cut-price deal for Edwards earlier this week, and there has now been a further development.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Football Insider, who have been informed by a Celtic source, the Hoops are now negotiating personal terms with Edwards. The Parkhead club are set to offer the winger a contract, with Ange Postecoglou having given the thumbs-up to a swoop for the free agent.

Should Edwards move to Glasgow, Celtic would have to pay West Brom around £300,000 in compensation- a third of his Transfermarkt valuation.

The Verdict: Worth a gamble

Celtic are aware of rival interest from a number of English clubs, so a cut-price move appears to be worth a gamble.

The Hoops could do with wide additions following Mohamed Elyounoussi’s return to Southampton, leaving them with just James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and Maryan Shved as wingers, with Edwards capable of playing on either side.

He showed flashes of brilliance for West Brom last season and is described as a very strong dribbler by WhoScored, so his direct approach could come in handy during Postecoglou’s first season in charge.

Crystal Palace linked with Divock Origi

Crystal Palace could form a dream attacking duo by signing Liverpool forward Divock Origi this summer.

What’s the story?

According to 90min.com, the Eagles are interested in securing the 26-year-old’s signature over the coming months as Patrick Vieira’s revolution begins to gather pace.

The report claims that Origi’s agent has been working hard to find his client a new club, with Southampton, West Ham, Newcastle, Rangers and Celtic all reportedly monitoring the situation alongside Palace.

Imagine him and Zaha

Despite popping up with big goals in big games on multiple occasions for Liverpool down the years, Origi has never established himself in the starting XI and made just two Premier League starts last season.

The £10.8m-rated marksman has forged a reputation as a big-game player during his time at Anfield, and even his teammates have publicly acknowledged his crucial contributions. Backup goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher lauded the Belgium international after bagging a brace during a penalty shootout win against Arsenal in the League Cup back in 2019.

“He always comes up with massive goals,” Kelleher told Sky Sports. “He was unreal tonight and the whole team tonight; we had a never say die attitude, and we kept going until the end.”

However, after finding himself firmly behind the likes of Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota in the pecking order on Merseyside, Origi has been strongly linked with an exit in recent weeks, and Palace could be the perfect destination.

Vieira is currently overseeing a major squad rebuild at Selhurst Park, and the pacey striker has the potential to become a vital part of the French tactician’s new-look lineup. Adding Origi’s firepower to the pace, trickery and direct running of Wilfried Zaha would make for a devastating forward line in south London, and chairman Steve Parish must attempt to seal this transfer.

With Michy Batshuayi returning to Chelsea following an unsuccessful loan spell last season, Palace are in need of an extra body at the top end of the pitch, so Origi would likely have the opportunity to showcase his ability on a regular basis.

It’s a move which makes sense for all parties involved, but Parish may have to move quickly in order to secure his man, with several other clubs also credited with an interest in the 26-year-old.

Everton transfer update on Sergio Romero

Lots of Everton fans have been left delighted as the Goodison Park club are reportedly in talks to sign Sergio Romero.

That is according to The Athletic, who added that both Juventus and Celta Vigo are also interested in his signature as he is set to leave on a free transfer in the summer window after his current deal at Manchester United ends.

With Robin Olsen seemingly going back to AS Roma after his loan spell at Goodison Park ends, the Toffees will need to bring in another goalkeeper to challenge Jordan Pickford between the posts.

Given Romero’s experience in English football, and the fact that he would be available for free, it presents a good opportunity for the Blues to snap him up.
