    WHAT DE GEA SAID

Speaking in an interview with Italian outlet , De Gea said, "I will speak about all of that when my career is over. When things don't happen, it's for a reason. It was close but the transfer wasn't completed… Personally, it went well because Manchester is my home."

The club have already played friendlies against Leeds, West Ham and Bournemouth in pre-season, but Mbeumo has not been ready to feature. • WHAT AMORIM SAID ABOUT MBEUMO

Speaking ahead of the game against Everton, Amorim said: “He's going to play. I'm really excited to see him playing and what he can give to our team. But I was also really excited to see the team playing the last game.

"You maybe looked at the starting line-up and said 'nothing to see today' but I was so excited because I know we can do better. So I'm always excited, especially at this moment."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Even after the signings of Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, United are still in the hunt for more additions. They have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but reports on Saturday suggested that the Slovenian could be about to join Newcastle instead. The Red Devils are also struggling to strengthen between the sticks, with moves for a replacement for Andre Onana proving unsuccessful as of yet.

“But we are always looking to improve the team and we have some characteristics that we would like to have. But again, it depends on the market. It depends on the sales. We'll see. But I'm really happy.

“I think even when you talk about Andre [Onana], you can see the other goalkeepers. Even Tom [Heaton] is linear, he's a different goalkeeper. Altay [Bayindir] did really well and Andre is going to be better like the other guys who are getting better this year.”

    WHAT TOMASZEWSKI SAID

Lucas Chevalier branded a 'five-a-side' player as PSG warned that new signing can't reach Gianluigi Donnarumma's level by former goalkeeper

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Italian goalkeeper is surprised that Paris Saint-Germain have decided to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper in Chevalier despite the presence of Donnarumma. Ballotta, a legend of Serie A, claimed that PSG's new acquisition will not be able to reach the level of Donnarumma, stating that they have signed a "five-a-side" player.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Donnarumma was one of the most crucial figures for PSG en route to the club's historic quadruple achievement in the 2024-25 season, which also included their maiden Champions League triumph. The Italian international, once again, earned a reputation as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the world. Following his heroics, few would have expected Donnarumma's relationship with Les Parisiens to completely collapse. Indeed, the player and the club could not reach an agreement on his contract extension, with the custodian having just one year left on his current deal. In light of the events, PSG decided to sign Chevalier from Lille and are believed to have informed Donnarumma that he would no longer remain the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper moving forward. To make matters worse, Donnarumma was left out of PSG's squad for the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

  • WHAT MARCO BALLOTTA SAID

Speaking in an interview with the Sport Department of , Ballotta said: "The motivation is unsustainable. Donnarumma is, if not the best in the world, one of the three best goalkeepers. Chevalier may be good with his feet, but I've seen Donnarumma make some decisive saves. Anything goes, but a goalkeeper has to be a goalkeeper. I don't think PSG's new goalkeeper can reach the level of Donnarumma currently.

"Football has copied five-a-side football. In five-a-side football, the goalkeeper is crucial because he's an outfield player and can create numerical superiority. However, I consider it a fad. In a few years, they'll change the way they play and it won't be talked about anymore. And in any case, the evaluation isn't based on who is simply good with their feet; it's not about them having to dribble. It's not about good feet, but about vision. However, this approach neglects more important qualities, such as the ability to come out high. I would have felt comfortable playing in this historical period, but I think a goalkeeper should be a goalkeeper.

"Repercussions? No, because Gigio has already proven to be mentally strong. For example, he's always known how to react to mistakes. Let's not forget that Donnarumma helped us win a European Championship. Now I don't know how things will end for him in Paris, but I see him as a number one, not a twelfth."

    WHO ELSE WAS NOMINATED?

The 23-year-old saw off competition from Lewis-Skelly, Dean Huijsen, Delap, Ethan Nwaneri and Kerkez to scoop a prize previously won by the likes of Gareth Bale, Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough at Arsenal alongside fellow wonderkid Nwaneri, while Huijsen impressed enough at Bournemouth to earn a summer move to Real Madrid. Delap also transferred to a new club in Chelsea after bullying defenders with Ipswich, while Kerkez similarly left the Cherries for Liverpool following a season of energetic displays at left-back.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

West Ham forked out £35 million ($47m) to sign the Mexican international just two years ago but it seems he is not part of head coach Graham Potter's plans. Romano adds that Fenerbahce manager Mourinho was keen on bringing him to the Super Lig outfit, and that has played a factor in the potential switch. The Hammers' midfield looked old and slow compared to Sunderland's in their 3-0 loss last weekend and it seems Alvarez is not the answer to those problems.

WHAT RB LEIPZIG'S SPORTING DIRECTOR SAID

He told : "As of today (Friday), Xavi will stay with us. We’ve always said that we make all decisions based on sporting and financial considerations, and that’s why Xavi is our player and why he played today. The transfer market is still open. You never know what’ll happen. I can’t guarantee that 100%. Everyone knows about his ambitions. He’s also told us that. There have certainly been a few exchanges in recent weeks. As we saw today, Xavi was in the starting line-up. So, there has been no agreement yet. And that’s why it will remain that way for now."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Simons' Chelsea switch is reportedly contingent on the Blues being able to sell forward Christopher Nkunku this summer, but an exit for the Frenchman is proving difficult.
