Newcastle scouts left impressed by 6 foot 3 giant who’s "superb in the air"

Newcastle United scouts were recently left impressed by a Premier League defender, and he is now on the radar as a potential signing, according to a report.

Howe's pursuit of a defender continues

After missing out on Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi back in the summer, in what was a disappointing transfer window, Newcastle remain keen on a new centre-back, having identified several targets for this winter and the summer.

The Magpies are plotting a move for Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, who could be available for a fee of £42m – £50m this month, although Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are also in the picture and his price tag could prove prohibitive.

Eddie Howe’s side were in contact with the agents of AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori earlier this month, but the Englishman has since reemerged as a key player for the Italian side, starting the last three Serie A games, indicating he may no longer be available.

As such, Newcastle may be forced to consider other options, and Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder has now revealed that Brentford’s Sepp van den Berg is now on their transfer radar heading into the next couple of transfer windows.

Scouts were left impressed after watching Van Den Berg on a number of occasions, most recently watching him in action in the Bees’ 2-2 draw against Manchester City, during which they also checked on Bryan Mbeumo.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland in action with Brentford'sSeppvandenBerg

With Fabian Schar still yet to sign a new deal and Jamaal Lascelles’ contract set to expire in the summer, Howe is keen to bring in additional options at centre-back, and the Brentford defender could fit the bill.

The 23-year-old is said to be a great option due to his ability on the ball, but there may be competition for his signature, with Bayer Leverkusen also keen.

Van Den Berg developing at the Gtech

The former Liverpool man’s rise to becoming a consistent starter in the Premier League has been a steady one, spending time on loan at Championship side Preston North End before going on to perform very well for Mainz in the Bundesliga last season.

The Dutchman was the most aerially dominant defender in Europe’s major leagues, playing a major role in his side avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga.

Former footballer George Chokamov has praised the 6 foot 3 defender’s development at the Gtech Community Stadium this season, while journalist Sam Tabuteau has also lauded him as a “committed, full blooded defender” who’s “superb in the air”.

As such, it is a smart move for Newcastle to identify Van Den Berg as a target, and Howe should continue to monitor his performances between now and the end of the season.

Rangers hit jackpot with "unbelievable" star who’s worth more than Cameron

The January transfer window officially slammed shut last night and Glasgow Rangers went through the deadline without adding a fresh face to their squad.

Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement only brought in Rafael Fernandes on loan from Ligue 1 side Lille earlier in the window and opted to avoid any late-night shopping on Monday.

The Light Blues did announce a signing, however, as they confirmed that Dundee central midfielder Lyall Cameron is due to join the club at the end of the season.

His contract with the Scottish Premiership side expires in the summer and he has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Gers ahead of his move later this year.

How much Lyall Cameron could be worth

According to the Daily Record, Rangers could have to pay a fee of around £400k in compensation to Dundee, as the young midfielder came up through the ranks with the Scottish side.

Market Movers

The report claims that the Gers will attempt to agree a fee with Dundee instead of going to a tribunal, which is what they had to do with Connor Barron, who they ended up having to pay Aberdeen £700k for.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a solid season so far in the top-flight, with a return of nine direct goal contributions in 23 matches.

Clement, however, already has a fantastic selection of midfield options and the club have already hit the jackpot on one of them, as Nicolas Raskin is worth way more than the £400k that the Gers could have to pay for Cameron.

Nicolas Raskin's current market value

At the time of writing (04/02/2024), the Belgian wizard is currently valued at €6.5m (£5.4m) by Transfermarkt and this means that he is worth over 10 times more than the Dundee ace, despite only being one year older.

The 23-year-old maestro joined the Light Blues a little over two years ago in the 2023 January window from Standard Liege, for a reported fee of €2m (£1.6m).

Nicolas Raskin

This means that the Gers have struck gold with the right-footed dynamo, who was described as “unbelievable” by Kris Boyd earlier this term, because his value has soared by millions over the past two years at Ibrox, which is reflective of his performances on the pitch.

Raskin has been in terrific form in the Premiership this season as a holding midfielder for Clement. He has averaged 3.9 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst winning 61% of his duels, across 21 appearances in the top-flight, which speaks to his impressive physicality and dynamism in the middle of the park.

The Belgian star is a fantastic and consistent performer for Rangers and still has plenty of time on his side to develop further and increase his value, which is another reason why the Gers have hit the jackpot with him.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite missing Sergio Ramos due to injury, Monterrey secured the final spot in the Liguilla by defeating Pumas 2-0 at Estadio BBVA on Sunday. Goals from Germán Berterame in the 58th minute and Nelson Deossa in the 89th sealed the must-win match.

It was Martín Demichelis’ side who emerged victorious over Efraín Juárez’s Pumas, officially eliminating UNAM from the Clausura 2025. Monterrey will now turn their focus to Toluca, who they’ll face at home this week in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

Tensions ran high after the final whistle, as both Demichelis and Juárez were sent off following a heated exchange. As a result, Demichelis will not be on the bench for the first leg against Toluca.

“It was just a typical football argument. The match ended in a heated way, but everything stays on the field,” said Luis Pérez, Juárez's assistant, after the match.

“We’re convinced that Pumas needs to return to the top. We know who we represent, and we’re committed to improving every day,” Pérez added following UNAM’s elimination.

Meanwhile, Sebastián Grazzini, Demichelis’ assistant, emphasized the importance of having key players like Sergio Canales and Óliver Torres back in the squad: “They’re very important players. They gave us a boost, and we’re very happy to have them back. We’re excited and already looking forward to the match against Toluca.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It’s a huge sigh of relief for Demichelis and Monterrey after qualifying for the Liguilla, especially following a week of intense criticism stemming from their loss to Pachuca in the first Play-In match. The pressure was evident, as Demichelis was met with loud boos from the home crowd when the lineups were announced for the decisive game against Pumas – clear discontent from Rayados fans over the team’s recent performances.

But now, it’s a clean slate. is back in the fight, boosted by the returns of Sergio Canales and Óliver Torres ahead of their quarterfinal showdown with Toluca. The only uncertainty remains the status of Ramos, who is still racing to recover in time for the first leg, set to be played at Estadio BBVA.

    WHAT SEBASTIÁN GRAZZINI SAID

Sergio Ramos was unable to join his teammates on the pitch for a second consecutive match, raising concerns about the Spanish defender’s fitness ahead of Monterrey’s Liguilla quarterfinal clash against Toluca.

Following the match – and in the absence of Demichelis, who was sent off – assistant coach Sebastián Grazzini provided an update on the former Real Madrid star.

“We’ll have to see how he progresses over the next few days and then determine if he can play. He’s a very important player for us,” said Grazzini.

When asked about the criticism aimed at Demichelis after his red card, Grazzini defended the coach: “He’s one of the most respectful people I know – he didn’t say anything or make any gestures. We’re happy with the win, and now we’re preparing to face a great opponent.”

Rayados are back in the Liguilla after eliminating Pumas, and with that, their hopes have been reignited. The reward? A quarterfinal matchup against Toluca, the tournament’s top seed – whom Monterrey held to a 1–1 draw in Matchday 2 of the Clausura 2025.

Recent history favors the Diablos. Of the last seven meetings between the two sides – most of them tightly contested – Monterrey has won just one. Four of those encounters ended in draws, while Toluca claimed victory twice, suggesting this quarterfinal tie could be an evenly matched battle.

Now valued at just £300k: Orta struck gold by selling £7m Leeds star

Leeds United endured a relatively quiet transfer window throughout January, keeping hold of all of their key players, but also failing to make any new additions in their hunt for Championship promotion.

With just a couple of months left of 2024/25, there’s hope that such a decision not to pursue any targets doesn’t come back to bite Daniel Farke with a return to the Premier League expected at this point.

The Whites currently sit top of the pile with just 15 matches to go, with a huge falloff needed if they are to repeat last season’s form which saw them miss out on promotion at Wembley.

However, despite losing various first-team members after their play-off final defeat, Farke has done a superb job in replacing the talents and building a squad more than capable of winning the league title.

The base of the side has relatively been the same, undoubtedly contributing to their success on the pitch in recent months, with the German worthy of huge praise for his work at Elland Road.

Leeds United’s current midfield options in 2024/25

After such high-profile departures of the likes of Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray last summer, there were funds available to the boss to improve his side all over the pitch, with the central midfield department just one area which benefited from the investment.

Ao Tanaka arrived in a £3.5m deal from German outfit Fortuna Düsseldorf, being an unknown quantity to many, but has cemented himself as a regular starter since his summer move.

The Japanese star has since featured in 28 of the 31 league outings this campaign, frequently partnering captain Ethan Ampadu after his return to action following a lengthy layoff with a knee issue.

Joe Rothwell arrived on loan from Bournemouth, mainly as a backup, but has since forced his way into Farke’s starting XI, featuring 28 times – the same as Tanaka – highlighting his importance during his temporary spell in Yorkshire.

The aforementioned trio are good enough to start for the vast majority of sides in the division, not to mention Bulgarian star Ilia Gruev, who like Ampadu has missed large spells of the campaign, but has recently returned, showcasing the club’s strength in depth.

At one stage in another player’s career, it appeared as though he could’ve been the future of the club, but he was sold very early on in his time at Elland Road – a decision that has since proved to be a masterstroke.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

The former Leeds star whose value has crashed

After breaking onto the scene during the 2016/17 campaign, midfielder Ronaldo Vieira was seen as a player with a huge future at Leeds, potentially being the player to play a key role in their Premier League ambitions.

Former Leeds midfielder Ronaldo Vieira.

He made 38 appearances across all competitions as a baby-faced 18-year-old, producing performances way beyond his tender years, scoring his first professional goal in the win over Norwich City.

Vieira would follow up his superb debut campaign with another impressive season at Elland Road in 2017/18, a year which would end up being his final at the club.

The midfielder racked up another 32 appearances, but it wasn’t enough to push the Whites towards a play-off place, ending the campaign in 13th place – with Victor Orta cashing in on the youngster in the summer.

He joined Italian side Sampdoria for £7m, a decision which disappointed the fanbase, but one that’s proven to be a great call given his lack of progression since.

Former Leeds sporting director Victor Orta.

Vieira, now aged 26, has massively struggled with injuries, halting his progression at the top level, still featuring for Sampdoria nearly seven years after his transfer, with the Italian side now in the second tier.

He’s only managed over 20 appearances once in the last seven seasons, highlighting how much injuries have impacted his once-promising career, with his market value plummeting as a result.

The Englishman is now only valued at £300k as per Transfermarkt, a decrease of over 95%, with Orta certainly making the right call despite the anger around his departure at the time.

Vieira still has plenty of time to make amends for lost time, but it’s safe to say he’s nowhere near reaching the levels many expected him to after his arrival on the scene as a teenager.

It’s certainly a shame that he’s been unable to extract the best out of the skill set which saw him thrive in Yorkshire, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that the hierarchy conducted excellent business cashing in on him when they did.

This leaves Arteta with just Raheem Sterling as his only senior striking option, and even when given the chance to shine, he hasn’t exactly fired on all cylinders since joining Arsenal on loan from Chelsea last summer.

Sterling’s lack of impact against Leicester City last weekend forced Arteta to get very creative, with the Spaniard electing to replace Chelsea’s outcast by bringing on midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift centre-forward.

In dramatic fashion, the 28-year-old delivered a brace in the final 10 minutes to gift Arsenal a crucial three points in a 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium, but it is currently unclear whether Arteta will utilise Merino as a striker against West Ham on Saturday.

The Gunners’ current striking dilemma highlights why Arsenal really should’ve brought in a world-class number nine in January, while they had the chance.

Arsenal made a public bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, but according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, their low-ball £40 million proposal fell short of NSWE’s valuation for the England international.

The list of emergency free agents available to Arsenal is barren to say the least, with the biggest name among them, Diego Costa, most recently enduring a lacklustre stint at Wolves in 2022.

Arsenal preparing £50 million bid to sign Endrick from Real Madrid

Now, Ayto and the recruitment chiefs at London Colney are looking ahead to the summer window, as they seek to ensure Arteta won’t be left so short in the attacking third ahead of another potential Premier League title challenge next season.

The usual suspects, as well as more left-field targets, are linked with moves to Arsenal on a weekly basis – but a report has since emerged that Real Madrid starlet Endrick is now on their agenda.

As per a Spanish media source, Arsenal are believed to be very keen on Endrick, and they’re apparently the top candidates to secure his signature later this year. The Brazil international has found it difficult to break into Carlo Ancelotti’s side on a regular basis, with Arteta said to be offering a way out.

It is also claimed that Ayto and co are preparing a £50 million offer for the 18-year-old, and it will be intriguing to see if they do move forward considering his reputation as one of the most promising young Brazilians in world football.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Garnacho's frustration comes at a time of uncertainty for United. Without Champions League football next season, United face financial challenges and potential player sales. The club's underwhelming performance in the Europa League final has added to the pressure on Amorim and questions are being asked about his ability to rebuild the team. This environment could make it difficult for Garnacho to thrive and get the opportunities he desires and former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor admitted he would be looking to leave Old Trafford if he was in the youngster's shoes.

Man City may have found their left-sided Walker in "highly-rated" teenager

Manchester City simply cannot wait for this season to end.

On Tuesday night, despite leading 2-1 with less than five minutes to play, the Sky Blues were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid in the Champions League at the Etihad, Jude Bellingham’s winner coming deep into stoppage time.

This leaves the Citizens on the brink of elimination from Europe, while they’re currently down in fifth in the Premier League table, ahead of Saturday’s huge clash with Newcastle, leaving the FA Cup as their only hope of avoiding a trophyless season, with Plymouth Argyle, who’ve just dumped out Liverpool, their fifth round opponents.

So, with this campaign having been, as Zak Garner-Purkis of Forbes puts it, a “disaster”, will Pep Guardiola, who signed a new two-year contract extension back in November of course, start to look towards the future?

Man City's push for youth

As noted by Jamie Jackson of the Guardian, Man City currently have an ‘ageing squad’, which Guardiola insists is not the primary reason behind their poor campaign, but there was a clear strategy to get younger in the January transfer window.

As the table shows, Man City signed two teenagers, a 20-year-old and a 23-year-old in January, Omar Marmoush the slight outlier at 26, but they are clearly looking to the future, underlined by the fact that Juma Bah, snapped up from Real Valladolid, having paid his €6m (£5m) release clause, was immediately loaned out to Lens.

On the flip side, 34-year-old Kyle Walker was allowed to join AC Milan on loan, while Kevin De Bruyne and İlkay Gündoğan, who are 33 and 34 respectively, could depart at the end of the season as their contracts expire; Ederson, Stefan Ortega, John Stones and Bernardo Silva, all of whom are aged 30+, are out of contract the following summer.

Thus, the four-in-a-row Premier League champions could look rather different in the coming months and years, so could an exciting 18-year-old, who has also just joined the club, but we’re yet to mention, break into the first team?

Man City's future left-back

Given Man City’s January transfer spree, spending more than the other 19 Premier League clubs combined, one move rather went under the radar, this being the arrival of Christian McFarlane from MLS side New York City, one of the many other clubs owned by City Football Group.

In The Pipeline

Born in Basildon in Essex, McFarlane moved to the United States at the age of three, joining NYCFC’s academy as an 11-year-old, progressing through the ranks, featuring for the MLS Next Pro team before making his senior debut last year.

He came off the bench in June against Columbus Crew at Yankee Stadium, prior to starting for the first time when the boys in blue faced Querétaro in the Leagues Cup a month later.

Back in 2021, he became the third-youngest player in Major League Soccer history to sign a professional contract, doing so at the age of 14, and despite departing having made just 13 senior appearances, he has earned rave reviews.

Tom Bogert and Sam Lee of the Athletic labelled him a “highly-rated…top talent”, with Manuel Veth of Transfermarkt reporting that Brighton, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund all “showed interest” before his move to Manchester.

NYCFC sporting director David Lee expects him to “surprise people”, considering he has been training with the first team since he was “15 years old”, while his former MLS Next Pro manager Matt Pilkington believes “his ability to adapt to the level… sets him apart”.

Writing in the Guardian’s Next Generation of 2024 series, Oliver Connolly describes McFarlane as a “flying left-back”, adding he is “intelligent, quick and a solid defender in one-on-one situations”.

McFarlane featured in a Man City shirt for the first time on Wednesday, coming on for the final 13 minutes of a UEFA Youth League tie against Midtjylland, which his team won on penalties, the debutant converting from 12 yards during the shootout, so he’ll be hoping to see more action when the Sky Blues take on Hoffenheim in the round of 16 next month.

As noted by Jacob Schneider of Goal, McFarlane was the second-fastest player in MLS in 2024, and the sixth fastest of all 633,000+ players in the entire Wyscout database for the calendar year, “even surpassing Kylian Mbappé”, hence why the young dual-national, English-American could be Man City’s left-sided Walker in the future.
