Spurs wonderkid was meant to be better than Kane, now he’s in USA’s second tier

While things are rather rosy for those of a Tottenham Hotspur persuasion at present, it may remain rather strange not to have former talisman, Harry Kane leading the line these days, with the England skipper already making his mark at new club, Bayern Munich.

After itching to leave the Lilywhites for Manchester City two years ago, the prolific striker finally got his wish after sealing a £100m move to Bavaria last month, ending a lengthy association with Spurs that began in the youth ranks at N17.

As expected, the 30-year-old is already making a mockery of the Bundesliga having scored eight goals and contributed four assists in just seven games for his new side, notably bagging the first of what could prove to be multiple hat-tricks for the German giants at home to Bochum at the weekend.

In truth, the experienced marksman is picking up where he left off last season after bagging 30 league goals amid what was a dire collective season for the club, having at times held things together on his own during the years of turbulence under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ange Postecoglou's side have not yet felt the impact of losing the 89-cap international amid what has been a remarkable, unbeaten start to the new Premier League season, although it remains to be seen if the void that was left by the club's record goalscorer can be filled for the long-term.

With Kane undoubtedly the club's most successful academy graduate – and perhaps even their best-ever player – it is hard to believe that there was once a talent who arguably shined even brighter in the academy setup, in the form of one-time wonderkid, Cameron Lancaster.

Who is Cameron Lancaster?

For all the beauty and spectacle that football can provide, it can also be a particularly punishing and cruel sport, with the margins so slim between those who make it and those who don't at the elite level.

In truth, for every major success story, there is the case of talent who didn't quite make it. For every Marcus Rashford, there's a Ravel Morrison; or for every Harry Kane, there is a Cameron Lancaster.

As noted above, Kane had been the golden boy at Spurs for almost a decade prior to his departure this summer, yet it was his former youth colleague, Lancaster, who originally looked like being the bigger star of the future at Hotspur Way.

The Camden-born marksman – who is the same age as Kane – had regularly trained with the first team during his teenage years, gaining valuable experience working with the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale in the senior set-up.

That rapid rise was then capped during Harry Redknapp's time in charge during the 2011/12 campaign, with the then-youngster having been handed his debut off the bench against Wigan Athletic in the Premier League, something which seemingly caught him off guard:

“It was all bit of a blur. I remember going out after training to get some brand new boots for the game.

“I remember warming up, then Redknapp called me over to say I was going on for the last 15 minutes and all he said was to go and enjoy myself, do a job for the team.”

Cameron Lancaster

That first-team bow – which came prior to Kane's top-flight debut in August 2012 – appeared to be the start of a promising career for Lancaster in the capital, with the likes of Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand having told the academy gem that he had a "real chance of cracking it at Spurs".

As is so often the way, however, the footballing gods had other ideas…

What went wrong for Cameron Lancaster at Spurs?

Following on from that breakthrough 2011/12 season, the emerging sensation was then handed a new two-year deal by incoming boss Andre Villas-Boas, proving yet another show of faith by the club in his undoubted talents.

On the cusp of potentially earning a regular role for himself in the first-team squad, Lancaster was then cruelly struck down by the first of numerous injuries that would ultimately inhibit his progress, as he has revealed to Planet Football:

“That was the summer AVB came in and I started training with the first-team for pre-season, but it was literally within the first week I got quite a bad injury. I ended up snapping my groin off the bone and that set me back near enough a year. After that it was injury upon injury and I couldn’t get going to kickstart my career."

Cameron Lancaster

As the forgotten man went on to add, by the time he had recovered from an ACL blow in 2014 his contract was up at White Hart Lane, with the player deciding to take on a new challenge elsewhere, with just a solitary senior appearance for Tottenham under his belt.

As is the way, it was that following season in which Kane truly announced himself to the wider world after plundering 21 league goals under Mauricio Pochettino, with Lancaster, meanwhile, beginning a journey that has taken him far from the glittering heights of the Premier League.

Where is Cameron Lancaster now?

The 6 foot hitman did initially remain in English football after joining Stevenage following his departure from north London, albeit while ultimately scoring only once in just six appearances for the club, prior to joining non-league side St Albans City halfway through that 2014/15 season.

Since then, aside from a brief spell on the books at MLS outfit, Nashville – for whom he scored six goals in 19 games – the 30-year-old has been plying his trade in America's second tier for Louisville City.

While he may not be making his mark on the Champions League stage, unlike Kane, Lancaster has been rather prolific during his time in the States, with 84 goals in just 171 games in all competitions for his current side to date.

That record indicates that the Englishman has still enjoyed a respectable career since leaving Spurs almost a decade ago, although there may still be a sense of what might have been had injuries not halted his early progress.

Having forced his way into the senior set-up even before Kane, the future looked particularly bright for the one-time Dagenham & Redbridge loanee at the time, yet, alas, it was simply not meant to be for this once lauded wonderkid.

Rangers: Beale must unleash £12k-p/w gem who made a ‘big difference’ vs Livi

Glasgow Rangers secured their biggest win of the season last night, defeating Livingston 4-0 in what turned out to be a rather comfortable League Cup encounter.

The result sends the Gers into the semi-finals of the competition for the third year in a row and although Michael Beale isn’t quite out of the woods yet, there were no boos at Ibrox following the win.

Progress is progress, but this performance will be in vain unless the Light Blues secure all three points against Aberdeen at the weekend and the 43-year-old may be buoyed by a few of his players following their display last night.

Who scored for Rangers against Livingston?

The Ibrox side took an early lead via a wonderful finish from Abdallah Sima, who cut in from the left-hand side and struck a right-foot shot into the far corner.

The match stayed this way until the 66th minute when Ridvan Yilmaz embarked on a solo run that ended up with him scoring the second goal and all but securing the victory.

Late goals by Sima and Ryan Jack were the cherry on top and truthfully, the game should have been over way before then, yet the performance was much better compared to the Motherwell tie last week.

Yilmaz’s performance was arguably the most pleasing aspect of the night and the defender finally looks like he could make a claim for a regular spot in the left-back position during the remainder of the campaign.

Will Ridvan Yilmaz replace Borna Barisic?

Following his first goal for the club, former Ibrox striker Kenny Miller dubbed him “incredible” and he certainly offers something different from the Croatian, that’s for sure.

Rangers stars Fashion Sakala and Ridvan Yilmaz.

Barisic has averaged 3.3 crosses per game in the Premiership this term along with making 2.8 key passes per match, yet he has lost possession a staggering 17.8 times each outing. This indicates that while he tends to push forward often, he is being caught out regularly and this isn’t helping the club from a defensive point of view.

Yilmaz on the other hand, didn’t push forward up the left-hand side as often as Barisic would have, but he offered a greater threat by drifting into the middle of the pitch, providing an option for a wide range of teammates.

His goal was a prime example as he burst through the heart of the pitch before unleashing a shot that the goalkeeper had no chance of saving. Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie ultimately hailed the youngster.

He said: “Brilliant play from Ridvan Yilmaz, that's the variation of options he gives you!

“Runs the full length of the Livingston half driving beyond two men before finishing from range. That's some goal from your left back.”

He also marvelled at his playing style giving the Gers another few options, saying: “Think Ridvan's forward running and combination play has made a big difference tonight. Just gives you more options, and the opposition a greater variety of problems.”

It’s evident that if the £12k-per-week gem stays fit and healthy over the coming weeks, the defender certainly deserves to be unleashed on a regular run in the starting XI in order to gain more confidence and showcase his abilities on a more consistent basis.

After last night’s display, I don’t think anyone would have any complaints, that’s for sure.

Aston Villa: £75k-p/w star was "as important as Grealish" but now he’s flopped

Aston Villa’s progression took a turning point when Unai Emery was appointed in October 2022, with the Spaniard unearthing a bolstered trajectory for his squad to follow.

At the point of his arrival, Steven Gerrard had failed to develop his side at Villa Park, leaving the squad in 16th place for Emery to inherit a tough project with reference to the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

It was a challenge that the former Arsenal boss accepted with open arms, leading the Villans to a 7th-place finish and a Europa Conference League spot for the 2023/24 season.

There is still a long way to go for the four-time Europa League winner, however, the future looks bright as he orchestrated a successful summer of business by welcoming five new faces of impressive calibre to the Midlands.

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

While one new face, in particular, has started well, with £51.9m capture Moussa Diaby already contributing to five goals in eight Premier League appearances, it’s still early days into the Frenchman’s career before his hefty price tag can be answered for.

Villa know all too well the repercussions of having high hopes for a new signing at first for them to not perform as expected, most notably with Philippe Coutinho arriving as a magician and leaving miserably to go on loan in Qatar this summer.

The Brazilian isn’t the first, and certainly won't be the last player to fail to prevail such high hopes at the point of signing, with another name currently on the payroll at Villa that has arguably not lived up to expectation.

When did Aston Villa sign Emiliano Buendia?

Signed in the summer of 2021 from Norwich City, Dean Smith secured a blockbuster signing in the form of Championship sensation Emiliano Buendia.

The Argentine arrived after a prolonged period of speculation over his future, with Arsenal also reported to have been admirers of the versatile attacker’s services.

The level of demand for Buendia that summer was unsurprising, as the former Real Madrid academy starlet had just inspired the Canaries to promotion to the top-flight, ending the campaign top of the league table and assists table.

In the 2020/21 season, the Argentine picked up a host of accolades including the Championship Player of the Season and Norwich City’s Player of the Season for his contributions to the Canaries’ promotion.

In 39 Championship appearances that term, the attacking midfielder secured 32 direct goal contributions, scoring 15 and assisting 17 to hold himself accountable for a huge chunk of his side’s success.

How much have Aston Villa spent on Emiliano Buendia?

For his dominating individual campaign in 2020/21, a club-record-breaking fee seemed feasible to obtain his signature, as Villa handed Norwich £38m for the 24-year-old dynamo.

Signed on a five-year deal, the midfielder was rewarded heavily for his brilliance in his final Championship season, highlighted by the lucrative contract he was handed by the Villans in comparison to the value of his salary with the Canaries.

Everton vs Aston Villa in the Premier League at Goodison Park in February 2023.

After leaving Getafe, Buendia was earning £8k-per-week when he first signed for Norwich, which rose to £25k-per-week in his final season with the club.

At Villa, Buendia was handed a weekly wage of £75k-per-week, amounting to £3.9m-per-year to showcase his progression on the pitch through his rise in salary value over the years of his career in England.

Just over two years since his arrival, the Argentine has collected almost £8m in wages, added to the £38m fee that Villa spent to secure his signature, amounting to the total cost the Midlands club have spent on him so far being £46m, excluding the fortunes he’s earned so far this term.

The then 24-year-old arrived at Villa Park among the club’s top-ten earners, signifying just how highly he was valued with reference to the impact he could have in the first team.

What was the reaction when Aston Villa signed Emiliano Buendia?

As expected, there was a lot of excitement at the point of Buendia’s arrival, with a host of big names in the media with a tie to Villa declaring their joy in Smith’s capture of the playmaker.

Stan Collymore took to Twitter X to explain how pivotal the signing could be with reference to Jack Grealish, saying that his “creative influence” could remove the pressure on the Englishman to be the prominent spark in the midfield.

emiliano-buendia-norwich

Things didn’t work as hoped for Collymore and many others, as Grealish signed for Manchester City before the window closed that summer, however pundit Noel Whelan told Football Insider that the £38m man could be “as important as Grealish”.

When speaking to Football Insider in October 2021, Buendia had already featured for the Villans, with Whelan describing his gameplay as bringing a threat in a manner that was “exactly how Grealish did” when he was at Villa.

The comments regarding his early days suggested that the Argentine could be the ideal figure to bridge the gap left by the £100m academy graduate, however the reality of his time at Villa has been far from as remarkable as first anticipated.

Has Emiliano Buendia lived up to expectation?

Whelan was one of many who was encouraged by Villa’s capture of Buendia, but also like many, the pundit has since voiced his frustrations with reference to the 26-year-old’s lack of progression.

Speaking to Football Insider in 2022, the former Leeds United striker admitted that the creative midfielder has “not really hit the heights” that were initially expected, adding that he was “supposed to be the Grealish replacement”.

Aston Villa midfielder Emiliano Buendia.

Whelan added that the £75k-per-week star had “not been consistent enough”, which was a fair call of judgement when reflecting on Buendia’s form since arriving in the Midlands.

In a total of 78 appearances for Villa, the former Championship sensation has scored on just nine occasions, as well as recording only nine assists, amounting to 18 goal contributions in 78.

To put into perspective, Buendia scored 15 goals alone in 39 appearances for Norwich in his final season, highlighting a severe decline in his contribution in the final third, with a drop in performance level also traceable in his all-round game play.

From August 2022 to January 2023, the former Getafe ace failed to score or assist a single goal in the Premier League, as pressure built for him to raise his level of performance in the Midlands.

As highlighted in the table below via FBref, the Argentine went from performing in the form of his life in the second tier, to struggling to find his feet at such levels in the Premier League, leaving a sour taste in Villa’s mouth over what could have been.

While there is a feeling that Buendia should be producing more, there is still a lot of time for the 26-year-old to fully exert his ability at Villa Park, with glimpses of just how special he can be on his day.

The 2023/24 campaign started as a nightmare for the midfielder, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture during pre-season, leaving him sidelined for at least the first half of the term.

Everyone associated with Villa will be hoping that the £38m man can hit his full potential once more, especially after starting life so inconsistently with pressure added by his inability to play following his injury.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool entertained the eager Anfield crowd on Thursday night and within 14 minutes, The Reds went up 4-0 thanks to goals from the team's front three—Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Darwin Nunez—who managed to find the scoresheet alongside academy graduate Bobby Clark. With much of his 2024 already marred by an injury he sustained while representing Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations, Salah made his first start for Liverpool since New Year's Day.

  • WHAT KLOPP SAID

Speaking on injuries and Salah's fitness, Klopp told reporters: "I'm not sure what happened to Kostas, I'm sure that he will be fine though. For Bobby like I said he felt something, but it was intense for the boy, he was running around like crazy. Let's hope that's nothing.

"Besides that the subs for Joe [Gomez] was a precaution, Wataru [Endo] was a precaution, David was a precaution. And Mo already recovered in the second half so all good.

"Mo is a very experienced player, I told him if he has to stay on then he may have to play the full game. He did and it was the first time I told someone to stop defending. He actually then nearly made another goal but Cody was offside. He's very experienced so he got easily over the line.

"He [Clark] played incredibly. It was his first goal but he won the ball back after another one. He is the one I am worried a bit about, we wanted to take off Mo [Salah], but Bobby sits on the ground and says he feels something in the ankle. Hopefully, it is nothing. The steps the boy made though, pfff [wow].

"We've had such a difficult situation with all the injuries and then the boys stepped in and took their chances. So very happy with that, they were exceptional again."

Gareth Southgate admits England's defensive injury problems mean door is open to Ben White return ahead of Euro 2024

White asked to be left out of the latest England squad to face Brazil and Belgium as he has informed the Three Lions he does not want to be called up for the time being. His absence has added to Southgate's problems in defence with Kieran Trippier, Reece James, Luke Shaw, Marc Guehi and Trent Alexander-Arnold all injured. Kyle Walker and John Stones also picked up injuries during the most recent international break. Yet Southgate has not ruled out taking White to Euro 2024 and has made it clear the door remains open if the Arsenal star wishes to return.

    WHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

He told reporters: "It's really for Ben now. As I've said, the door is open for us. That's clearly difficult ahead of the Euros, when [he’s] missed all of the qualifying campaign and you've got players that have played all the way through.  But we have no idea of knowing who's going to be available in that area of the pitch. We’ve lost four to injury this camp. So, as I said, for me, it's open. I have absolutely no issue.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Arsenal defender has reportedly opted to snub England duty due to difficulties adapting to a fringe role within the squad, and also because of a previous confrontation with assistant manager Steve Holland. White flew back early from World Cup 2022 because of "personal reasons" and has not featured for the national team since. Arsenal team-mate Declan Rice has said he will try to convince White to change his mind, but it remains unclear if White will play international football again, at least during Southgate's tenure.

WHAT NEXT FOR WHITE AND ENGLAND

England's friendlies against Brazil and Belgium were Southgate's last chance to see his team in action before he names his preliminary squad for Euro 2024 on May 21 – two days after the Premier League season finishes. The Three Lions then play two friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland before Southgate must name his final squad by June 8.

Better than Antony: Man Utd once had £130m star on trial at age of 16

Manchester United, even despite their illustrious standing in English football, have missed out on a number of top talents joining the Theatre of Dreams whether that be through other clubs poaching their wanted man before a move is finalised or the player in question outright rejecting the Red Devils.

Alan Shearer, Wesley Sneijder, Manuel Neuer and more have apparently rejected the opportunity to put on the Man United strip from years gone by, the Red Devils missing out on some exceptional footballers in the process.

It's not just reserved for high-profile names from the past however, with one star in particular bypassing a permanent stay at Old Trafford as a youngster to then rock up at the Emirates – a key player for Arsenal in the form of Gabriel Martinelli, now believed to be worth a staggering £130m per Football Observatory.

Did Man Utd come close to signing Gabriel Martinelli?

As a teenager, Arsenal's main man down the channels had trial spells at various mammoth clubs.

He would trial at Barcelona before the option to try out for Man United would come calling for the youngster, having four different spells with the club on a trial basis.

Speaking about that time in his life, the Brazilian told the Athletic: "My dad and I had watched the Premier League together, all the teams, like Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester.

"I actually had four different trials at United when I was 13, 14, 15 and 16. This was in Manchester at the club’s training base. I met first-team players, like Zlatan (Ibrahimovic), Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra."

The Red Devils wouldn't keep Martinelli on, however, a rejection they will now regret.

Speaking about his early developmental years before joining Arsenal, Martinelli opened up about not feeling wanted whilst in Manchester.

He added: "There was never a moment, though, when they said they wanted me there. But it gave me a taste and made the adaptation a little easier because I had experienced football in England."

Martinelli would then return to his native Brazil before Arsenal swooped in for the winger at a cut-price, purchasing the then-unknown talent for only £6m from Ituano.

How good is Gabriel Martinelli now?

Described by SPORTbible editor Tom Marshall-Bailey as "incredible" for his achievements – propelling himself to stardom with the Gunners after playing fourth-tier Brazilian football – Martinelli is a key part of the Mikel Arteta jigsaw now in north London.

He was pivotal last time out for Arsenal before the International break beckoned, scoring a late deflected winner at the Emirates as Arsenal managed to topple Manchester City and win 1-0.

Still only 22 years of age, the Brazilian is now settled in the Premier League and playing week in and week out under the guidance of Arteta. To date, the young attacker has made 137 top-flight appearances for the Gunners.

His numbers from those starts make for good reading too, netting 34 goals and assisting a further 21. 21 of those overall contributions came during a mesmerising term in 2022/23.

It's led to Arsenal deploying Martinelli and Bukayo Saka down their respective wings to devastating effect, the north London outfit a joy to watch on their day flooding forward in attack courtesy of their two tricky forwards.

Whilst Arsenal struck gold with Martinelli and Saka developing into top talents, Man United have struggled to bring in wingers of the same calibre who can dazzle defenders with ease.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaks toAntony

Costing Man United a jaw-dropping £82m – £76m more than Martinelli – in the summer of 2022, Antony has underwhelmed so far in a Red Devils jersey which makes the transfer fee feel more outrageous by the day.

He has only managed an unsatisfactory eight goals and three assists from 50 Premier League matches played, a poor return for a man who joined from Ajax with so much hype attached to him. Evidently, that electric nature that makes Martinelli such a red-hot proposition is not yet inside of his fellow Brazilian, who is also goalless in 2023/24.

The continuing failure surrounding Antony's move will hurt even more when those at Man United look back on what they could have had with Martinelli, the once rejected Man United triallist now a leading man for rivals Arsenal.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BRAZIL?

Dorival Junior's side will next be in action on Tuesday as they take on Spain in a second international friendly at Real Madrid's home Santiago Bernabeu.

Spurs: £12m former Pochettino gem now has more assists than Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur's start to the season has been nothing short of sensational, with Ange Postecoglou's impact instant and revolutionary.

The Australian was a well-liked figure from his previous roles with the Australian national team, Yokohama F. Marinos and Celtic among many others, but few could have predicted that a man without experience in such a high-pressure job would take to north London with such ease.

In fact, the 58-year-old has proven to be one of the finest tacticians in the Premier League, having cultivated a feel-good atmosphere in N17 once again, the likes of which have not been seen since Mauricio Pochettino's tenure.

As such, he has implored fans to let their imaginations run wild with regard to expectations for the season, noting: "No, no, no, let them go, let them enjoy it. I've said this before, my role is not to burst peoples' bubbles. Let them get excited and ahead of themselves, that's the beauty of being a supporter.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

"They go through enough pain, let them enjoy and if they think we're going to be world-beaters great, it's then up to us to match those expectations. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and they can enjoy it anyway they want to."

Whilst he alone is being credited as the driving force behind this return to form, James Maddison's work on the pitch cannot be understated. He too has hit the ground running following his move, and promises to be a true spearhead for their revolution.

How good is James Maddison?

Unloading £40m on the recently relegated maestro was a fee that many likely questioned given the decreasing bargaining position of sellers Leicester City. However, with Newcastle United also interested, it made sense to ensure a deal could be completed with ease.

Especially given the way the 26-year-old has enjoyed his start to life in north London, having scored twice and assisted a further five across just eight Premier League fixtures.

His unrelenting creativity and deceptive trickery have seen him instrumental in some key results earned, with Joe Cole even suggesting his acquisition had been the best throughout the window: "The more I think about it he could be the best signing of the summer. I am so excited for him, especially the way Ange plays."

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-eriksen-alfie-devine

Not only are his tangible figures exemplary, but the underlying ones match those trends to suggest that it is a partnership set to earn long-term success. After all, when compared to other attacking midfielders across Europe, he sits in the top 1% for assists and shot-creating actions per 90, the top 6% for progressive passes per 90, and the top 3% for expected assisted goals, via FBref.

It should come as no surprise that he has become one of the division's top creators, with his assist tally making him one of three with the most in the entire Premier League.

The praise showered on him by talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend therefore makes complete sense, as he claimed: "I have really enjoyed watching Maddison. I have enjoyed watching him play because I think he enjoys being kind of almost the pivotal part of the team. I think that suits his personality. I have been impressed."

However, one of that trio on five assists for the season is actually a former Lilywhites star, and one they surely regret offloading. After all, few could have predicted how exceptional Kieran Trippier's twilight years would be.

Why did Spurs sell Kieran Trippier?

Although the former Burnley man had become a true Spurs stalwart, as a key cog in their run to the Champions League final alongside a couple of limp title pushes, the 33-year-old would reveal just how disappointing the manner of his 2019 exit would be whilst speaking to The Athletic.

The Yorkshire-born ace noted: "As a footballer, you're trying to do your best and sometimes things don't go your way. It just wasn't happening, but I was still getting picked by Mauricio Pochettino.

“After the Champions League final, it felt like the right time to move on. The media weren't really on my side at the time and maybe I needed to get out of England for a bit just to clear my mind. I never looked back.

"What annoyed me … as you know, people in football speak and there are always rumours, but I know 100 per cent for a fact – and this is what I was most angry about – that two months before the end of the season, Daniel (Levy, the chairman) was offering me to other clubs.

“I knew for certain that was happening, so I knew my time there must be up. I was playing for my teammates and the supporters, but I also knew I wasn't wanted.”

So, he would depart for just £12m amongst a betting scandal, having since returned to Newcastle United to spearhead their own incredible revolution.

How is Kieran Trippier performing now?

Whilst Trippier may be level with Maddison in the league, his assist in their 4-1 Champions League rout over Paris Saint-Germain has actually seen the right-back surpass the midfielder in assists across all competitions.

It should come as no surprise to see the £120k-per-week wizard maintain his immense creativity from defence, especially after the truly outstanding year he enjoyed last campaign. Featuring in every single league game as they finished fourth against all the odds, his eight goal contributions were supported by 2.9 key passes and 1.9 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

His bravery to return to a relegation-threatened club and steer them to safety has been lauded by many, with Alan Shearer leading the praise, Shearer: "Some of the balls he was putting into the box were just unbelievable. What a signing he has been for Newcastle, he’s in great form".

Pundit Trevor Sinclair would support such a notion: "When you're injured and have a long-term injury which Kieran Trippier has got, you don't need to go [to the matches]. It's not something that he has got to do as a member of the squad.

"You don't have to go to away games, especially as it's 200 to 250 miles away. But that, for me, just shows the personality of Trippier and why signing him wasn't just for him going there for a bit of money and glory. He was going there to try and achieve something and coming back for other reasons as well."

It is fair to say that he has attained such a goal, with his efforts in out-creating Maddison just one of his many accolades.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Following last week's big news that Xabi Alonso intends to remain loyal to current club Bayer Leverkusen, reports that attention in Munich has now turned to De Zerbi. The Italian is said to be admired by new Bayern director Max Eberl, with the wheels already in motion to gauge his interest and availability. Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim is the other name on their two-man shortlist.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool were also targeting Alonso as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp but have had their eye on De Zerbi too. Amorim is another heavily linked with Anfield, suggesting there is plenty of potential for Liverpool and Bayern to clash heads in the coming weeks. De Zerbi has the added benefit of already speaking English – but not German – and being proven in the Premier League after doing a remarkbale job with Brighton. Last season, the Seagulls achieved their highest ever league finish (sixth in the Premier League) and qualified for European football for the first time ever.

    WHAT DE ZERBI SAID

De Zerbi left his future rather open when he spoke ahead of Brighton's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday: "I want to speak with my club. I have a contract but the problem is not the contract, the problem is to find the same plan, the same target, the same vision for the future.

"I have not decided yet what is my future, because I have the contract, but anyway I want to speak with [owner] Tony [Bloom], my club, to understand their plan, to understand his plan, the Tony plan. Then we take the decision together, without problems. I want to keep my ambition, my motivation. I live for football 24 hours a day. I want to know what is the plan, what is the project, what is the future because if I don't feel comfortable, I don't feel the right motivation, I can't stay any longer."

Prior to his success with Brighton, De Zerbi had made his name doing similarly good things with Sassuolo. Under his guidance, the club, who had spent their history in Italy's lower leagues prior to 2013, enjoyed back-to-back eighth place finishes in Serie A in 2019/20 and 2020/21. Three of his Sassuolo team were then part of Italy's victorious squad at Euro 2020.
