ICC rankings: Pakistan's Sadia Iqbal becomes No.1 T20I bowler

England’s Sophie Ecclestone, who missed the recent series against West Indies, has dropped to fourth on the list

ESPNcricinfo staff27-May-2025Pakistan left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal has reclaimed the top spot on the ICC’s T20I rankings, thanks largely to England’s Sophie Ecclestone missing their recently completed series against West Indies and dropping to fourth place. Ecclestone was left out of Charlotte Edwards’ first squad after picking up a knee injury at the WPL, where she played for UP Warriorz. Ecclestone has since returned to action for Lancashire Women.Sadia credited former Pakistan captain Sana Mir for helping her make improvements to her game recently. “She (Sana Mir) obviously had a lot of experience in women’s cricket. The way she’s served Pakistan cricket, she has been number one bowler during her days. I used to keep talking to her while we were on tour regarding bowling different variations,” she said in a PCB video.Lauren Bell, who was the leading wicket-taker in the England-West Indies T20I series, has moved up 13 places into sixth while Linsey Smith and Issy Wong have jumped 37 and 32 places respectively. Wong’s ascendence will be particularly pleasing as she was making her comeback to the squad after last playing against Ireland in September 2024 and did not feature at the T20 World Cup.Though West Indies were swept 3-0 in the series, their captain Hayley Matthews continued to impress with individual brilliance. She was the leading run-scorer with 177 runs in the series, including a century in the opening game, and moved up two places on the rankings to slot in behind Beth Mooney. Matthews is now 29 points behind Mooney and with West Indies due to play South Africa next month, she could be eyeing top spot. In moving up the rankings, she displaced Tahlia McGrath and Smriti Mandhana to No.3 and 4 respectively. Matthews also remains the leading allrounder, 54 points ahead of Amelia Kerr.England’s new captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has entered the top 10, after scoring a half-century in the T20I series. She sits at No.9, while former captain Heather Knight jumped seven spots to 17 and Sophia Dunkley, who was the third leading run-scorer in the series, moved eight places to No.29.

Bairstow sparkles for Yorkshire before Surrey battle back

Skipper falls short of hundred as visitors finish opening day in ascendancy at Headingley

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay16-May-2025Captain Jonny Bairstow made a sparkling 89 and Adam Lyth passed fifty for the sixth time this season, but Yorkshire squandered a promising position on the first day against Surrey. For the 16th Rothesay County Championship game in a row at the Kia Oval the side who won the toss bowled first, but at 203 for five just before tea, with Bairstow at his attacking best, Yorkshire were in the ascendancy on a typically green-tinged pitch offering some seam movement and good carry.Matthew Revis had helped Bairstow put on 49 but former Yorkshire teammate Matt Fisher had Revis caught behind off the last ball before the interval and after tea Surrey took control.Bairstow was cruising towards a hundred when he top-edged a sweep and although Yorkshire’s tailenders did secure a batting point their last five wickets fell for 52 in a total of 255. In 13 overs before the close Surrey openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley reached 46 without loss.Bairstow is expected to miss next week’s game against Nottinghamshire so he can join Mumbai Indians, and some of his shots would not have looked out of place in the IPL including a sumptuous straight drive off Nathan Smith – his tenth four – which brought up a 63-ball fifty in front of an appreciative crowd of more than 5,000.Three more boundaries followed and having passed 50 for the fourth time this season he looked odds-on to convert it into a hundred. Surrey turned to off-spinner Dan Lawrence and he made the breakthrough when Bairstow top-edged a sweep to deep backward square leg, an anti-climactic end to a fine innings. As the situation demanded, Lyth’s approach was more circumspect but his was still a crucial contribution in the first half of the day.The left-hander and opening partner Fin Bean were relatively untroubled as they put on 52 in 75 minutes before Bean, who’d been dropped at leg gully by Lawrence on eight, drove at Tom Lawes and Kurtis Patterson, the Australian batter making his Surrey debut, took a good catch at third slip.Lawes and Jordan Clark shared six wickets and were the pick of the Surrey attack. Clark’s extra bounce undid James Wharton while Lawes benefitted from Ben Foakes’ athleticism when Jonny Tattersall fended the ball off his hips and the Surrey keeper dived full length to his left to hold the catch.Lyth reached his fifty off 117 balls (5 fours) and it took an outstanding ball to remove him, a brutish lifter from New Zealander Smith which he gloved to Foakes.George Hill edged to second slip where Sibley held a juggling catch to give Clark his second wicket, but in the hour before tea Bairstow and Revis were caused few alarms. One they departed in the space of nine overs, however, Surrey made short work of Yorkshire’s lower order. Lawrence, diving to his right, took a fine return catch to dismiss Ben Coad while Jordan Thompson played well for his 30 before a top-edged pull, expertly held on the long-leg rope by Jason Roy, gave Lawes his third wicket. Clark needed only four deliveries with the second new ball to pin Jordan Buckingham on the boot and finish things off.

Drenthe, Klaassen & Everton's worst signings of all time

The Toffees suffered a disastrous transfer window last summer, but it is not the first time they have forked out for duds over the years…

    Alex Nyarko

When a supporter feels the need to invade the pitch to tell you just how badly you have been performing, you know that the writing is on the wall!

That was the case for Nyarko, who having made 33 appearances across four seasons after signing from Lens for £4.5 million, was told in no uncertain terms by a travelling fan during a trip to Highbury that he was no longer welcome.

Needless to say he never made another Toffees appearance.

    Lars Jacobsen

While Everton were able to sign the Dane on a free transfer from Nurnberg, much was expected from the full-back under David Moyes.

He struggled with injuries and form throughout his debut campaign, though he did end up playing in the 2009 FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea.

Remarkably Moyes was keen to hang onto him, but he eventually left for Blackburn after just one season on Merseyside.

    James Beattie

Signed for £6 million from Southampton and reportedly nearing a regular place in the England squad, Beattie never came close to living up to his potential at Goodison.

He did make 86 appearances across three seasons at Everton, but he was rarely a starter.

    Steve Simonsen

Signed for £3.3 million from Tranmere Rovers, Simonsen was the most expensive British goalkeeper ever when he moved to Goodison Park.

He failed to make an appearance during his first season, however, and was eventually released in 2004 having played just 35 times in six years at the club.

FIFA 20 ratings: De Bruyne, Van Dijk, Pogba & the best Premier League players

England's top flight has the greatest strength in depth in the new game, but who are the best of the best?

    22Bernardo Silva – Manchester City – RW – 87

The former Monaco man is now playing a starring role under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium and his excellence has been recognised in FIFA 20 as he makes the top 20 Premier League players. With a dribble rating of 92, he is the best in the league.

    21Aymeric Laporte – Manchester City – CB – 87

He might face an extended period on the sidelines in real life, but he remains a stalwart in FIFA 20, with his defensive and physical ratings especially impressive. There are only three Premier League centre-backs who can out-rate the Frenchman.

    20Fernandinho – Manchester City – CDM – 87

He might be 34 years old, but that does not mean that the Brazilian defensive midfielder is any less of a force. What he lacks in pace he makes up for in virtually every other aspect of his play, with his game based around a balance between technical assurance and imposing physicality.

    10Bruno Fernandes

It is impossible to doubt the creativity and impact that Bruno Fernandes has had on Manchester United over the last 12 months.

Not only has the Portugal international returned 18 goals and 15 assists in the last calendar year to date, but he has transformed his club as a leader on and off the pitch.

    9Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe ended last season as the top scorer in Ligue 1 for the third year running, while he also won the French top-flight's Player of the Year Award.

However, even after failing to win the league, it was the Champions League where the 22-year-old really made a name for himself.

A series of clutch performances in the knockout rounds ultimately ended in disappointment, as Manchester City knocked out PSG, but Mbappe still made a statement.

    8Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich is the heartbeat of Bayern Munich's midfield, but equally performs as one of the best right-backs in the world when moving out to play in defence.

The versatile leader of the German champions has marked himself out as arguably the most consistent performer in the Bundesliga in recent history.

    7Karim Benzema

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid, Karim Benzema has stepped up to become the club's talisman.

The France international's goals were crucial to Los Blancos' push to win the Champions League and La Liga.

Although they fell short in both, it was through no fault of the 33-year-old, who has continued his good form this season with 11 goals and eight assists in his first 13 games.

Nketiah, Hudson-Odoi and Inaki Williams: Why Ghana have become an attractive option for dual nationals

GOAL explores what may be working magic for Black Stars in their quest to introduce new faces into the side

It has been a week of nationality switch speculation for Ghana in their preparations towards the World Cup as the England trio of Edward Nketiah, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tariq Lamptey were reported to have pledged their international future to the four-time African champions.

This follows similar speculation on the Spain-born Athletic Bilbao brothers of Inaki and Nicholas Williams.

'Fascinating' is a good word to describe the development as many dual nationals had previously turned down Ghana's overtures.

So just what could be doing the trick for Ghana now, if the recent reports are indeed true?

  • Getty

    World Cup qualification attraction

This may be quite obvious by now. In March, Ghana beat archrivals Nigeria on the away goals rule to qualify for the World Cup, where they have been zoned with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, Luis Suarez's Portugal, and Heung-Min Son's South Korea in Group H.

Playing at the World Cup is every player's dream, and when you have the chance to face some of the best players on the planet come Qatar, there will not be many better platforms to make a name for yourself.

Indeed the World Cup attraction remains one of Ghana's old tricks as they have leveraged this in the past, famously luring former Barcelona striker Kevin-Prince Boateng ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

With all the present Ghana targets unlikely to make the cut and play in Qatar on the tickets of their countries of birth, they were always going to find it difficult saying 'no' to the Black Stars' offer.

  • Getty Images

    Power of new technical team

Ghana's chances of landing top targets has a lot to do with their new technical team which was put in place ahead of the Nigeria play-offs.

Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo was appointed as head coach, ex-Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton was named as technical advisor while Aston Villa U19 coach George Boateng, and Nordsjaelland man Mas-Ud Didi Dramani were named as assistant coaches.

Although Addo played international football for Ghana, he was born in Germany, Hughton played international football for Ireland but was born to an Irish mother and a Ghanaian father in England, while Boateng played for the Netherlands at senior level despite being born in Ghana. Dramani works with Denmark-based Nordsjaelland and his reputation as one of Ghana's finest coaches remains unquestioned.

Fair to say the new technical team is composed of entities who are highly respected, even outside of Ghana, and have built good reputations for themselves in the game, the kind they could leverage in discussions with dual-nationals, with whom they mostly shared similar backgrounds.

Hughton held talks with Hudson-Odoi in Accra earlier this year, Addo works with Germany-born Borussia Dortmund winger on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, Ansgar Knauff, while Boateng engaged England-born Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo, for example.

The background and reputation of the coaches were always going to be a game-changer.

  • Backpage

    Golden generation-in-build and exciting project

A careful look at the breed of talent coming through Ghana's ranks could easily signal that a golden generation is in the making.

While Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey remains undoubtedly the biggest name, Ajax playmaker Mohammed Kudus (21), Stade Rennes attacker Kamaldeen Sulemana (20), Roma's Felix Afena-Gyan (19) and Sporting Club's Abdul Fatawu Issahaku (18) are undoubtedly some of the most exciting young players in African football. Throw in Southampton centre-back Mohammed Salisu (23) and Leicester City's Daniel Amartey and you may have a solid spine of a potential Afcon-winning side.

Hudson-Odoi, Nketiah and co. would look at this prospect and can only imagine what a potentially strong side they will form should they join the project.

    Chance of international career

It may appear these dual nationals may be choosing Ghana 'over' their countries of birth, but in reality, they may be doing so under some form of compulsion.

Hudson-Odoi has played three times for England at senior level but has been overlooked since 2019, and with his career and performance unsteady over the last few years, his chances of breaking into The Three Lions again is really not looking good at the moment.

At 22, Nketiah has not had a sniff of senior football for England despite his reputation as the country's all-time top scorer at U21 level, while Lamptey has an array of stays to battle with to break into Gareth Southgate's side at right-back.

Inaki Williams, 27, has not added to his single cap for Spain since 2016, and younger brother Nico can only learn from the situation.

Semenyo, 22, was hardly going to land an England call-up playing in the second-tier for Bristol.

The Ghana opportunity, it appears, stands as a good saving grace.

Romario, Baggio, Benzema & the biggest squad selection snubs in World Cup history

GOAL runs through the most high-profile players to be overlooked by their respective national teams for the biggest tournament in football…

Being a national team manager in the build-up to a tournament is an unenviable task.

There is invariably deafening noise as anticipation builds and it is nigh on impossible to universally satisfy the baying public with your squad selection, with every decision scrutinised in granular detail.

'WHERE IS X?!', 'HOW CAN HE OVERLOOK Y FOR THIRD-CHOICE GOALIE!', 'Z JUST WON SERIE A, FOR GOODNESS SAKE!'

It must be tough, but on occasion with those squad announcements, an egregious choice is made or a storyline emerges that rocks the football world.

Below,GOALruns through the most high-profile players to have been overlooked for a World Cup…

  • Reprodução

    Carlos Alberto – 1966

Scorer of one of the greatest World Cup goals of all time in the final four years later when he captained the Selecao, the legendary right-back was surprisingly cut from an initial 44-man training squad for England 66 despite being highly rated.

The 37-year-old Djalma Santos – who is similarly iconic – was picked ahead of him and went on to contest his fourth World Cup.

Alberto probably wasn't all that gutted to miss out in the end, though, as Brazil produced their worst-ever performance on football's biggest stage and exited at the group stage.

    Diego Maradona – 1978

Despite being just 17 years old, Maradona was already making quite the impression with his goalscoring exploits for Argentinos Juniors, earning a call-up to the Argentina Under-20 side with a home World Cup approaching.

However, pragmatic coach Cesar Luis Menotti didn't back the precocious talent to handle the pressure of the fanfare surrounding a World Cup on Argentine soil at his tender age.

Maradona missed out on a glorious campaign as a result, but oh boy, would he be back for his moment in the sun…

  • Getty

    Liam Brady – 1990

One of the finest players the Republic of Ireland has ever produced, Arsenal legend Liam Brady never represented his country at a major tournament.

With a style not in keeping with Jack Charlton's modus operandi, the then-West Ham star was left at home for Italia 90 – a decision that brought an end to his playing career.

Speaking to in 2020, Brady insisted he held no grudges, but still aimed a dig: "When we qualified in 1990, the team had moved on, I was surplus to requirements, Jack had lads in midfield who could get up and down the pitch, and maybe my style had had its time.

"If I had a different type of manager who believed in another type of football I could have been in that 1990 World Cup squad but he wasn't that way inclined.

"He wanted the ball to go from back to front as quickly as possible, put defences under pressure so they'd make a mistake, rather than trying creative football.

    "So, that's why I didn't go."

    Roberto Mancini – 1994

This was more a case of self-admitted self-sabotage from the Euro 2020-winning Italy coach.

Roberto Mancini – who had a tempestuous association with the Azzurri in his playing days – refused to be a part of Arrigo Sachhi's squad for USA '94, believing the manager's preferred system did not get the best out of him. Italy would reach the final but suffered defeat to Brazil.

"I refused to follow Arrigo Sacchi in the United States. Another mistake paid for dearly. Today I can say I regret it, but of course it's too late," Mancini said in an interview with in 2009.

Who is going to win the Women's Super League?! Winners and losers as Man City blow the title race wide open with victory over Chelsea

Just three points separate Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the WSL table, with the relegation battle still extremely tight, too.

With the Merseyside derby on Friday night, the north London derby on Saturday afternoon and a clash of title rivals as Manchester City welcomed Chelsea on Sunday, this past weekend's programme of Women's Super League fixtures came with high expectations.

Fortunately, it lived up to the billing. Everton and Liverpool played out a game with an entertaining finale at Goodison Park, eventually sharing the spoils; Arsenal strutted their stuff, putting five past Spurs in an emphatic win; and Man City blew the title race wide open with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea.

The latter result put the Citizens into second place, level on points with a Manchester United side that beat West Ham 4-0 on Saturday, with Chelsea dropping to third as Arsenal remain fourth. The Blues, one point off the pace, and the Gunners, three points behind, both have a game in hand.

There was plenty going on at the other end of the table, too. Bottom club Leicester have seen their positive momentum halted recently and a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of an impressive Aston Villa didn't help, while Brighton blew a 2-0 lead at Reading in a clash between the two teams directly above the Foxes.

So, who were the impressive performers over three entertaining days of football? And who should be concerned by the weekend's action? GOAL takes a look…

    WINNER: Caitlin Foord

Arsenal have made a flurry of new signings this calendar year, particularly in the attacking areas. Centre forward Jodie Taylor arrived this month after both Victoria Pelova, a winger or a No.10, and Kathrine Kuhl, who can play in midfield or out wide, joined in January.

Competition is certainly increasing in that forward line but Caitlin Foord showed, once again, on Saturday that she should be a key player in it.

The Australia international scored twice as Arsenal beat their north London rivals, Tottenham, 5-1 and was the outstanding player on the pitch. That brace took her to double figures for goal involvements in the WSL this season, with four goals and six assists in 15 games.

The Gunners have a huge end to the campaign coming up, with a 1-0 deficit to overcome in their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich on Wednesday and a race for European football and possibly the league title to follow.

Foord, in this form, could come up with some crucial contributions in that run in.

    LOSER: Liverpool

When Liverpool welcomed city rivals Everton to Anfield back in September, they were out-classed. The Toffees ran out 3-0 winners in a difficult day for their hosts. On Friday night, then, the Reds were out for revenge.

The rematch took place at Goodison Park and it looked like Liverpool were going to take all three points the short journey home.

At 1-1, a clever corner routine saw Missy Bo Kearns drill a low ball into Yana Daniels at the near post, with the Belgian flicking it on for Leighanne Robe to finish. It would've been the defender's first ever WSL goal.

However, the referee disallowed it, penalising Ceri Holland for a foul on Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan beforehand. It looked a very harsh decision at the time and even more so on the replay.

With the final score 1-1, Liverpool can feel incredibly aggrieved that they didn't come away from this game with all three points.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Lucia Garcia

Most of the players in Man Utd's regular starting XI seem to have nailed their places down in the line-up. However, there is a spot on the right wing that feels like it has been well up for grabs all season, with Nikita Parris and Lucia Garcia alternating there.

On Saturday, as the Red Devils beat West Ham 4-0, Garcia staked her biggest claim to date to be a regular from the start as she scored twice in an impressive performance from the bench at Old Trafford.

Marc Skinner's side had struggled to convert their dominance in the game into a convincing result until the Spaniard came off the bench, scoring 10 minutes after doing so.

It was a good goal, too. Her great run was well found by Ella Toone, with Garcia then bringing the ball down with a quality first touch before side footing past Mackenzie Arnold in the away goal.

The forward was involved in the build-up to the third, scored by Hayley Ladd, and tapped in the fourth in stoppage time, having popped up in the right place at the right time.

It's down to Garcia now to show that form consistently in order to be a regular in Skinner's XI.

    LOSER: Chelsea

On Sunday, Chelsea visited Man City. They had beaten the Citizens in their last 11 league meetings ahead of the game and, if they were to make it 12 wins in a row, they would surely have one hand on the WSL title.

But, four days after a demanding clash with European champions Lyon in France, the Blues were "sluggish" and their opponents capitalised, going 2-0 up inside 30 minutes. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes even made changes before half time as a result, with star winger Lauren James one of those taken off.

"[Our] third away game in a week and I thought it looked like it," Hayes said afterwards. "I thought it was the difference between the two teams in the first half. I don’t think people really realise how tough it is to come here in the third away game in seven days after an away game in Lyon. Really, really tough."

Chelsea, the current WSL title holders, are now in third place in the table, only a point behind Man City and Man Utd above them, but they may well have more of these demanding weeks ahead of them yet.

Hayes' side won 1-0 in France and if they are not beaten by Lyon at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, they will be in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Could the schedule hinder them further in what is an incredibly tight title race? Only time will tell.

In their quest for their first MLS Cup victory, FC Cincinnati has had a solid start to the new season. They are currently placed second in the Eastern Conference with 17 points after their first eight games.

They are in second place despite a humiliating loss to St. Louis City last time out. The Orange and Blue started the season with a seven-match unbeaten streak and five triumphs, partly due to a solid defensive record in which they only allowed four goals throughout that span.

However, they face a tricky opponent in the Portland Timbers, who are coming off a confidence-boosting victory against Seattle Sounders.

Giovanni Savarese's team began the MLS season with a victory over Sporting Kansas City at home, but that performance did not set the tone for what came next.

They went six games without recording another league triumph, earning just two points along the way from draws with LA Galaxy and Dallas after consecutive losses to Los Angeles FC, St. Louis City, and Atlanta United.

GOAL brings you everything you need to know about where to watch the game on TV and stream live online.

Supposedly taking on a darker blue, almost-black base, leaks show a kit accented with a bright purple on the sides and Three Stripes. The base also features an all-over graphic pattern of geometric shapes, in purple and green.

There is yet no confirmed Bayern Munich 2023-24 kit, but if rumours are anything to go by, this season's away kit will be going in a new direction. The away kit will retail for the same price as the home kit – a replica men's shirt retailing for £80.00 at adidas.

Having gone with a white-based home kit this year, fans will be pleased to hear rumours that the Bayern Munich 2023-24 third kit will take on the classic Bayern red base.

Latest speculation on Twitter points towards a third kit that very closely resembles the Bayern Munich 2000-01 Champion's League winning kit.

There is no confirmed Bayern Munich 2023-24 third kit or a speculated release date, but we should expect to see it unveiled in late summer 2023. The third kit will retail for the same price as the home and away kits, a men's replica shirt retailing for £80.00 at adidas.
