Man City fans react to Phil Foden’s international performance

[ad_pod ]

England’s Under-21 side recorded a 3-2 win over Turkey Under-21s on Friday night with Manchester City’s Phil Foden starring for Aidy Boothroyd’s side.

The goals came from Arsenal pair Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson, but Foden produced two assists during a brilliant all-round performance in Kocaeli.

The 19-year-old has only played 10 minutes of Premier League football for Pep Guardiola’s side during the 2019/20 campaign.

And some of the City fans have called on their head coach to hand the teenager more first-team action in the coming weeks.

Other supporters simply took the opportunity to lavish praise on Foden, who might well feel that he is ready to make the step up to the England senior side.

The youngster is a serious talent, but there might well become a time where he becomes fed up of sitting on the bench for the English champions.

A selection of the reaction from the City supporters can be seen below:

Man Utd fans mock Nicolas Pepe after Daniel James’ stunning start to the season

[ad_pod ]

In one of the biggest deals of the summer, Arsenal fended off competition from European rivals to land the signing of Lille winger Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivory Coast international enjoyed a sparkling campaign in Ligue 1 by netting 22 league goals, and there was understandable excitement at the Emirates for pulling off the club-record £72m deal.

At Manchester United, the Red Devils were making shrewd business moves, with Daniel James arriving in a £15m deal from Championship side Swansea.

The Welshman has bagged himself three goals in his opening five appearances, whilst Pepe has yet to find the back of the net for his new employers.

After seeing the stat between the two, United fans flooded to Twitter to reveal their glee at seeing their man outshine Arsenal’s big-money arrival.

Many supporters of the Manchester side basked in James’ glory, and insisted they got the better of the two deals.

Some Red Devils fans insisted the stat showed “talent is everything” and “not the market price”.

Is a former Celtic legend taking another step on the road back to the club one day?

Celtic legend Henrik Larsson has been offered a job as a manager in England, according to reports.

The man the Celtic fans called The King of Kings has not had a great time of it since his managerial career got underway, with spells at various clubs ending badly.

His last management job was at Helsingborg; it was his second time at the club where, like Celtic, the man is an idol. And just like the first spell there, he left the club under a cloud when he resigned last month after receiving mountains of abuse online after he oversaw a humiliating cup knockout.

Over the years many have mooted a return to Celtic Park – indeed there was much speculation that Lennon would bring him to Parkhead in a coaching role – but if what he craves is the manager’s job itself one day, it couldn’t be contemplated at the moment.

But a successful spell in the dugout somewhere could be a game-changer for the Swede.

Now Southend have come in with a potential offer; they have been without a boss since Kevin Bond left following a bad spell that left them second bottom of League One with only Bolton, who suffered a points deduction, behind them.

It’s a big job, a difficult job, but Larsson might feel that he has what it takes.

A lot of managers do not do well at the clubs where they were icons; there is a unique pressure that goes with that which many find difficult to bear. Frank Lampard has had a stuttering start at Chelsea, for example, and everyone in Scotland knows what happened to Ally McCoist at Ibrox.

Helsingborg might not have been the right club for Larsson … a spell in England might be more what he needs to cut his managerial teeth before an even more spectacular homecoming can be mooted, far less discussed as a serious prospect.

Barcelona have a big decision to make on Ansu Fati

Whoever hasn’t heard of Ansu Fati by now must be living under a rock.

The young 16-year-old La Masia sensation has really been the star of every Barcelona show whenever he’s featured on the pitch for the Catalan giants.

Of course, it all started with his first call up for a La Liga game back on matchday two and it continued quickly with him bagging both a goal and an assist in a single clash on matchday four, breaking multiple records along the way and writing history for Barcelona and Spanish football as a whole.

He went from a really talented 16-year-old boy, still learning how to walk in La Masia, to a 16-year-old kid bound to become a superstar in the foreseeable future. Things really do work fast in modern football and Fati is definitely feeling it on his own skin right now.

But breaking records solely on La Liga soil seemingly wasn’t enough for him so he decided to bring some of that to Barcelona’s first European trip of the season.

The Catalans travelled to Signal Iduna Park where they faced Borussia Dortmund in the opening game of group F in the Champions League. And not only did Fati travel alongside Lionel Messi and co. but he also started the game from the get-go.

That achievement made him become the youngest ever Barcelona player to feature in the Champions League at the age of just 16 years and 321 days, once again leaving the former record-holder, Bojan Krkic, behind in the dust.

He stayed on the pitch for 59 minutes and was replaced by Messi just short of the hour mark. And despite Barcelona’s goalless draw that definitely left a lot to be desired, the spotlight was firmly on Fati once again as the footballing world seemingly just can’t get enough of the teenage prodigy.

But Valverde will definitely have some decisions to make in the coming weeks. Does he keep Fati in the senior squad and officially promote him despite his young age and inexperience or does he grant him some more time to mature with Barcelona B?

Barcelona’s coach did talk about Fati before the Borussia Dortmund clash and he insisted that playing him is not with an aim to break records but rather to help the team achieve victory.

And yes, seeing such a young player lighting up the stage is something many football fans love to see but is Fati actually ready to make such a huge step-up and don the Blaugrana kit on the biggest stage of them all?

We have to remember that he completely skipped the process of featuring for Barcelona B and went from the U-19 squad straight into the lion’s den and La Liga. This is a jump not even Messi did back in the day.

Even Barcelona’s best player in the history of the club followed and trusted the process, climbing through the ranks until he was finally ready to challenge the first-teamers. Sure, the skill he had and the quality he showed were immediately visible and his talent alone was proof enough he would indeed turn into a superstar of the future.

But he still had to mature in order to become a regular first-teamer or rather, a squad member within the first-team.

A player who enjoyed similar outcries of the media and lauding of various players and coaches was Krkic, a now 29-year-old Montreal Impact player whose various records Fati broke in the past weeks. But he also didn’t make such big jumps all at once.

Fati, for those reasons, is a very special case at Barcelona but that isn’t necessarily a good thing. Obviously, he’s very talented and skilled. After all, he wouldn’t have scored two goals and assisted one in three La Liga games if he wasn’t.

But the clash against Borussia Dortmund also reminded us of one other thing: Fati is, for all his skills, potential, talent and brilliance, still just 16 years of age, and that shows on the pitch.

Sure, Barcelona need a breath of fresh air and he is definitely that but he is also too immature and too inexperienced to be starting huge Champions League clashes like the on against Borussia Dortmund.

As a result, he only tallied an 80% passing accuracy, as well as four unsuccessful touches and three dispossessions. Slandering a 16-year-old kid for an underwhelming performance in the Champions League doesn’t really seem fair but it’s also the reality of the situation.

It would be wise for Valverde to take a step back and think this through properly. Is this process helping Fati develop at a rate that’s best for him? Is he going to reach his potential if he continues doing what he’s doing now?

If so, then by all means, let the kid break more records and let him feature for Barcelona again.

But if there’s an off chance that this is all happening too fast and might hurt his progress then Valverde has to take it as absolute certainty.

The risk is far too great and maybe it wouldn’t hurt Fati to spend some time with his peers rather than wrestling players twice his age on a stage that still might be just a tiny bit too big for him.

The choice and the decision, however, will fall on Valverde’s shoulders.

Let’s hope he does the right thing, whatever that may be.

Tottenham fan thoroughly unimpressed with Gareth Southgate report

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have been left fuming after The Daily Star reported that Daniel Levy is lining up England manager Gareth Southgate to replace Mauricio Pochettino whenever he leaves the club.

The Daily Star says that the 49-year-old is the north London outfit’s first choice to succeed the Argentine, whose team haven’t got off to the best of starts this season.

That said, they showed some fight to beat Southampton with 10 men on Saturday, which took any pressure that might have been building off a little ahead of hosting Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The report says though that this is likely to be the former Southampton man’s final campaign in charge of Spurs, meaning Levy needs to starting sniffing out potential replacements.

While Southgate led the Three Lions to a World Cup semi-final last summer, his only experience at club level was a spell with Middlesbrough in which he was sacked just under 10 years ago having suffered relegation from the Premier League a few months earlier.

Tottenham supporters certainly aren’t impressed by the Southgate report, and while one labelled him as “the perfect yes man for Levy”, another said “I’d take David Pleat ahead of him”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Everton’s Jordan Pickford suffering from emerging Premier League syndrome

“I don’t know why he finds it funny,” Gary Neville shouted at Jordan Pickford as he almost cost his team a goal last Saturday.

The Everton man, in rather typical fashion, came out of his goal and tussled with Bernardo Silva before Manchester City came close to adding a fourth.

It was something that summed up Pickford. He has a bubbling and vibrant personality but he’s often left wanting.

Arguably he was at fault for one of City’s strikes. Stepping to his left, he opened the gap up for Riyad Mahrez to rifle in a free-kick that should have been a straightforward save.

But things are never simple with the England goalkeeper. In fact, they rarely ever are with English stoppers.

Think back to Scott Carson’s calamitous mistake in qualifying for Euro 2008 or to Joe Hart being swatted away to Torino and then Burnley.

Even Jack Butland is now having a tough time of it at Stoke too, making an error against Nottingham Forest.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, even though he’s England’s number one, Pickford is still pedestrian. He’s too error-prone and that might well put his future in Gareth Southgate’s plans in doubt.

After all, the Three Lions still have a plethora of option available to them with Nick Pope and Tom Heaton being called up for the latest internationals.

The Toffees stopper is also among those Southgate has called up, but he could well have some promising players starting to appear over his shoulders.

Dean Henderson has now received Premier League experience with Sheffield United, and he is certainly one to watch out for, while Aaron Ramsdale is in similar shoes at Bournemouth.

It may be sometime before they start to break into the frame but Pickford should still be on edge. His place shouldn’t be safe and that’s largely down to an emerging Premier League syndrome, something that’s been plaguing goalkeepers on English shores in recent times.

A classic case that’s comparable to the 25-year-old is Simon Mignolet, that isn’t just because they’ve plied their trade in Merseyside, but because they’ve had similar paths.

Having both been at Sunderland during times of trouble, they were reduced to saving a greater percentage of shots than they ever have for Liverpool and Everton.

During 2016/17, Pickford had to make a colossal 135 saves in just 29 appearances, per WhoScored. If you compare that to his first term at Goodison Park, he played nine more games but only had to make 120 stops.

Last season that figure stood at just 92 efforts denied.

Throughout the 2012/13 campaign, Mignolet was forced into producing a monumental 149 stops as he was an ever-present figure in the Black Cats side.

Upon his move to Anfield, the Belgian made 105 saves in 38 matches during his first season. He then made even fewer the year after, just 89 in 36 outings, via WhoScored.

That says a lot about the amount of defending a team like Sunderland has to do compared to one competing in the top six to eight teams in the division.

Accounting for how many errors leading to a goal they’ve made is also important. Pickford has made nine in the Premier League while Mignolet managed 18 before moving to Club Brugge this summer.

Goalkeepers are sure to average more than your normal outfield player but it still doesn’t make for very pleasant reading.

The fact is that these two individuals looked like superb shot-stoppers when playing for Sunderland. Indeed they were pleasing on the eye and kept their team in the game but when having less to do, they crumble under the pressure.

The weight of playing for a side like Liverpool and even Everton is far larger. There are expectations and mistakes are often put under the microscope more often. This is because they’re having less to do.

They’ll make fewer saves and as a result, when they do make an error it’ll be scrutinised intensely. It’s also a case of focusing when you’re less involved in the play.

This is typical of Pickford, who displayed against Man City that his focus and attitude wasn’t up to scratch.

But the former Sunderland men aren’t the only ones to suffer from this syndrome.

Another player you can throw into the metaphorical hat is Michel Vorm. The 35-year-old looked capable at Swansea but was out of his depth in a Spurs team that had fewer defensive duties.

Thogden ranks every Premier League goalkeeper kit in the video below…

This also works the other way too, specifically for goalkeepers going from a club where they have little to do, to playing for one where they’re likely to be tested more often.

Lukasz Fabianski is a prime example. He was suspect at Arsenal but has since been a revelation at West Ham, winning their Player of the Year for 2018/19.

At the Gunners, he was someone that Arsene Wenger admitted mistakes affected him. But because they did less defending, he wasn’t able to prove his worth on a sufficient enough level in terms of shot-stopping. Is it ever really a surprise he didn’t make it in north London? Probably not.

The problems he had there haven’t been an issue at Swansea and West Ham but it shows that confidence is key. The more saves you make, the comfier you feel between the posts.

This appears to be something Pickford is suffering from – rarely does he seem comfortable and he looks a shadow of the person that arrived as a youngster from the north-east. Making save after save was confidence-boosting but he isn’t tested enough regularly at Everton.

The same happened for Mignolet at Liverpool and it could well be damning for Pickford’s international career.

Only time will tell whether it does have an impact, but he is unlikely to improve unless he gains a greater sense of focus, just as he did at the Stadium of Light.

Leicester City’s James Maddison asks Jordan Henderson a million-dollar question

Manchester City Twitter likely went into overdrive on Saturday when clips of Liverpool forward Sadio Mane taking a dubious tumble in the box against Leicester City reached the internet.

Mane hit the ground like a sack of spuds under pressure from veteran Marc Albrighton, who probably should’ve known better, with referee Chris Kavanagh keeling under the pressure of the home fans and pointing to the spot.

Bizarrely, VAR upheld Kavanagh’s original decision, which was questionable upon reflection, and James Milner tucked it away from the spot to extend Liverpool’s already mammoth lead at the top of the table to eight points.

Whilst social media accounts dedicated to Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Gabriel Jesus went into complete meltdown, so too did the travelling players, who understandably vented their frustration at their late defeat in the most primitive of ways – a good old scuffle.

The international break is now upon us (sadly), and while the man who scored the Foxes late and ultimately academic equaliser, James Maddison, might’ve put club rivalries to one side, it hasn’t stopped him from asking Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson the million-dollar question…

“No.”

Leeds youngster Eddie Nketiah sends a huge message to Marcelo Bielsa

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Earlier in the season Patrick Bamford was insistent that he was focusing on club matters rather than international football

But is that something that might well come back to hurt his chances for Leeds? Quite possibly.

While the centre forward was busy away from the match action over the break, his main competition was not only in the goals but also making a massive statement to his manager.

Eddie Nketiah scored last week versus Slovenia for England’s U21s before the striker then got himself on the score sheet three times against Austria on Tuesday evening.

Even away from Leeds, he still scores goals.

The 20-year-old put in an incredibly lively performance and on another day could have helped himself to four strikes.

What was thought to be his first went down as an own goal before it was then given back to him while he also missed a penalty. Despite that final aspect, he put his starting credentials right at the forefront of Marcelo Bielsa’s mind.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Bamford has gone six matches without a goal now and since he last netted, Nketiah has scored eight for club and country.

That speaks volumes about how good he’s been, but also why it’s slightly baffling that he hasn’t been given more of a chance.

Nketiah’s first goal initially went down as an own goal so graphic correct at time of writing. Since corrected to three goals.

Leeds’ number nine has had a tireless attitude in recent weeks and has deservedly earned acclaim for the way he’s worked, but the fact of the matter is that the Whites lack goals and he isn’t finding the net.

Bielsa’s men average the highest number of shots per game in the division but only sit tenth in terms of goals scored.

It’s damning and it could well be something that halts them in their tracks in terms of promotion.

But Nketiah is the real focus here. He’s still yet to start in the league and even if his manager still doesn’t trust him entirely, he must bite the bullet at some point with his selection.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

The 20-year-old is currently doing all he can to make his name heard and even voiced his feelings after the game.

He revealed to Sky Sports: “I will never be happy with being on the bench. I want to play. I pride myself on being in the team. I think I am good enough to be in the team.”

It was a staunch message from Nketiah who is now surely closer than ever to starting in west Yorkshire.

If he doesn’t play from the off this weekend, the 64-year-old will be in serious danger of not only upsetting supporters but also damaging their hopes of winning too.

His three goals against Austria shows he’s in form and has to be considered.

Man Utd fans have savage reaction after Alexis Sanchez suffers long-term injury

Undeniably one of the most ineffective signings in Premier League history, Alexis Sanchez’s miserable time at Manchester United was mercifully ended when he was allowed to leave the club on loan in the summer.

The Chile international initially arrived at Old Trafford as a bona-fide superstar from his time at Premier League rivals Arsenal, but never truly looked like capturing his best form, scoring just five goals in 45 appearances for the club.

Having been given a new lease of life by joining Serie A giants Inter, Sanchez may have hoped to reignite his flailing career. Instead, it appears to have taken another major setback. According to BBC Sport’s Simon Stone, the forward was injured on international duty, and is now expected to be out for the next two to three months.

After hearing the news of the 30-year-old’s potential lay-off, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their loanee.

Many supporters of the Manchester side delivered a fairly brutal verdict on Sanchez’s plight, and insisted they “love to see it”.

Some Red Devils fans felt the injury meant they are now the last ones laughing, and called on him to simply retire from football.

Manchester City fans react to Pep Guardiola’s Champions League admission

Manchester City fans have been debating their Champions League ambitions after Pep Guardiola stated his side are not ready to win the competition just yet.

The Spaniard told reporters: “People say about the Champions League. We still are not ready. We create a lot, we don’t concede but can improve.

“We’ve scored a lot over the last two seasons and I don’t have doubts about that but we have to keep going and work on that.”

Since City’s takeover in 2008, the club has gone onto become the most successful English side of the last decade, winning three Premier League titles as part of a ten trophy haul.

However, the one piece of silverware that still evades them is the Champions League.

The Citizens have not yet reached a European final in this time, with a semi-final defeat to holders Real Madrid in 2016 proving to be their best attempt so far.

However, Guardiola is no stranger to success in the competition, winning 74 matches in 112 fixtures as a manager with three different clubs. He also won the trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, beating City’s rivals Manchester United on both occasions.

The Citizens will resume their quest for Champions League glory tomorrow, as they host Atalanta at the Etihad Stadium. The Premier League champions can make it three out of three with a win over the Italian side in Group C.

Guardiola’s comments have sparked a mixed reaction on social media. Some fans were inclined to agree with his sentiments, but others were less receptive and suggested his attitude could cost them in their pursuit of world football’s most coveted prize.

Here’s how the fans reacted to the manager’s comments…
