Stoneman lifts Durham to valuable win

Durham’s limited-overs captain Mark Stoneman made the county’s second highest Twenty20 score of 89 not out to lead his side to a 38-run NatWest T20 Blast win over Leicestershire

Durham’s limited-overs captain Mark Stoneman made the county’s second highest Twenty20 score of 89 not out to lead his side to a 38-run NatWest T20 Blast win over Leicestershire.Defeat was a blow to Leicestershire’s hopes of reaching the last eight as they prepare to lose the O’Brien brothers, Niall and Kevin, to Ireland’s ICC World T20 qualification bid. They were also without skipper Mark Cosgrove, as his wife was about to give birth, and acting captain Grant Elliott left himself with too much to do.Elliott went in at 35 for 3 in the seventh over in reply to 163 for 5 and when Ben Raine was run out three overs later 106 were needed off the last ten. After securing a tie against Yorkshire by conceding only five in the last over, it was an unhappy return to his home county for Raine. He took none for 56 and spent 20 balls over 19 runs when sent in at No. 4.When Elliott fell lbw trying to hit Scott Borthwick to leg in the 11th over the remaining batsmen faced a hopeless cause and they were all out for 125 with one ball unused.Insights

Usman Arshad had an outstanding match. His quickfire 28 – which included just one boundary but plenty of good running between the wickets – in a 65-run partnership with Stoneman saved Durham after a mild middle-overs stumble, then Arshad picked up three wickets with his nagging seam bowling, including in-form Agathangelou and danger man Kevin O’Brien with consecutive deliveries in his first over, and proved very difficult to get away, conceding just one boundary and bowling 12 dots. Arshad’s was an unglamorous but extremely telling contribution.

Stoneman helped Durham recover from 98 for 5 in the 14th over. Only Phil Mustard, with 91 at home to Yorkshire two years ago, has scored more in a T20 innings for Durham. The victory ended a run of three defeats for Durham as they prepare to visit Worcestershire on Sunday.Stoneman survived difficult chances off skied leg-side shots on 27 and 73 and cashed in with two straight sixes in the last three overs off Raine. He also hit seven fours in scoring his runs off 60 balls.Usman Arshad contributed 28 off 19 balls to the unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 65 to make sure Durham reached the sort of total they threatened when racing to 45 after four overs after being put in on a glorious evening.Durham were stifled by the offspin of Rob Sayer, a 20-year-old whose only previous first-team appearance was in a one-day match against New Zealand last month. He wasn’t afraid to pitch the ball up and took both wickets through Gordon Muchall and Ryan Pringle clipping to wide mid-on.Arshad continued his excellent night with two wickets in two balls in the third over of the reply. Andrea Agathangelou was bowled attempting to scoop a straight ball to fine leg then Kevin O’Brien drove at the next ball and got a thick inside edge to midwicket. Tom Wells hit three sixes in his 27, but it was all over when he was brilliantly caught at long-on by Pringle to give Arshad a third wicket.

Smith urges sensible batting in middle overs

Australia captain Steven Smith has pulled up his batsmen as the cause for the team’s eight-run defeat to New Zealand

Melinda Farrell in Dharamsala18-Mar-2016Australia captain Steven Smith has pulled up his batsmen for the team’s eight-run defeat to New Zealand.Ahead of the opening match of their World Twenty20 campaign in Dharamsala, Smith had stressed the need for his players to bat smartly during the middle overs, to look for gaps and take the safer route to runs if the conditions did not warrant the going-for-broke approach.Instead, after Usman Khawaja and Shane Watson made a brisk start against the new ball, Australia’s batsmen did the exact opposite, losing their way against New Zealand’s spinners and throwing away wickets trying to play the big shots.”I think when the ball got a little bit older, it chewed up pretty quickly and as you could see there was quite a bit of spin,” Smith said. “That’s always difficult to play. Credit to the New Zealand bowlers, they got the ball in the right areas and made us play some pretty average shots.”For us it is about finding a way between overs seven and 15, trying to build a few partnerships. It might not be about clearing the fence, it might be about getting a lot of singles, getting off strike, getting lots of twos, something that we haven’t done so well and didn’t do well again today.”Chasing New Zealand’s seemingly modest total of 142, Australia were 50 for 1 after the first six overs but lost three wickets and added just 50 runs in the following nine.Mitchell Santner and Ish Bodhi frustrated Australia’s batmen with canny spin, Santner producing a ripping ball that foxed Smith into coming down the wicket only to see it turn sharply past his bat and Luke Ronchi whip off the bails. But what will concern Australia is that most of their wickets came from players holing out while trying to clear the fence, their batsmen unable to adjust their approach when scoring became difficult. With their next match, against Bangladesh, just a few days away, they have little time to regroup.”I think its just about going out there and making sure we learn from our mistakes in this game,” Smith said. “I think the way we play, we can win and lose games in the 7-15 overs.”I think we saw that in the games we played against South Africa. We batted really well in those periods and we were able to win games. So we need to adopt the same things here.”Australia’s campaign may be off to a poor start, but Smith maintains his side is still confident of winning Australia’s first World T20 trophy.”I think everyone in this team has had success in this format. I guess you have to try and think back to those moments and think what you did well.”We are in different conditions to (what) a lot of us have played. A lot of us have played in the IPL but you don’t quite often see wickets that are spinning like this one. It’s about finding ways to be successful and each individual to have a plan and stick to it as much as possible to make sure we get through those 7-15 overs because, if we do that, I’m confident we can win a lot of games.”Australia’s bowlers generally bowled tightly and took regular wickets, although Ashton Agar’s solitary over was one he will soon want to forget; it included three full tosses that were belted over the fence by Martin Guptill and he was immediately pulled from the attack. While the 18 runs conceded proved costly, Smith said that was not the deciding factor.”Those things happen in the game,” he said. “He didn’t execute as well as he would have liked. That’s the game of cricket, you can’t put it down to that.”Adam Zampa fared better, conceding just three runs from his only over, but that was the only time his legspin was used, as Glenn Maxwell was preferred to the two front-line spinners on a low and slow track.”I just thought today was the day that our quicker bowlers were going to do the job bowling the ball into the wicket and I think it worked. Restricting them to 142 was a very good effort. So I was very pleased with the way the guys did their job today.”I think I probably would have used them (spinners) a little more if the batters that were in were the right ones. So I was happy with the way the guys did their job today.”

No decision yet on Indians playing Women's Super League

There has been no decision taken on the participation of India’s players in the inaugural Women’s Super League to be held in England in July-August, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur has said

No decision has been taken on the participation of India’s players in the inaugural Women’s Super League to be held in England in July-August, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur has said.Several leading players such as Australia captain Meg Lanning, New Zealand captain Suzie Bates, who was rated by as the leading women’s cricketer for 2015, the World T20-winning Stafanie Taylor and her West Indies team-mate Deandra Dottin were named to partner the English women for the franchise-based six-team tournament. There were no Indians named in the list released by the ECB.ESPNcricinfo understands the ECB had sent a letter to all Full Members seeking their permission to enlist players but the BCCI was yet to discuss the issue. With 18 foreign players already announced – only three can feature in the playing XIs – Indian players are effectively ruled out.Thakur, however, added the Indian board was also mulling an IPL-style T20 league for women. “We have not taken any decision [on not sending Indian women to the T20 league in England] as of now,” Thakur told ESPNcricinfo. “As far as leagues are concerned, we are also thinking something [on the same lines] within the BCCI as well. We will decide on it during the meeting at the end of the month.”Clare Connor, the ECB’s head of women’s cricket, said her board had contacted various countries in January. “We wrote to all the boards in January, when we had final approval from the ECB about the six Super League hosts. We let them know where we were with the Super League and what we were looking to do with the overseas players: the number of overseas players (18), how we were looking to involve the world’s best.”We communicated with the BCCI, as we did with all other boards. They made their own decision that they were not going to put players forward or share their contact details.”India’s top women cricketers could not play in the inaugural Big Bash League in Australia in December-January either. Captain Mithali Raj and fast bowler Jhulan Goswami were on Adelaide Strikers’ radar but were denied permission since the tournament dates overlapped with India’s domestic season, which was scheduled to be televised for the first time. The delay in making India’s players available for the WSL is surprising considering the team’s next international assignment, a limited-overs series against West Indies, is scheduled for November. It was common sentiment within the Indian side that an opportunity to play in England, where the World Cup will be held in 2017, would help them prepare better.Unlike the Women’s Big Bash League where franchises signed players directly, the ECB decided to form a central pool of overseas players before narrowing down the squads of the six teams.”We asked whether the teams would prefer to contact their own players about it or whether they would prefer us to contact them directly,” Connor said. “Mostly, we contacted players directly: the boards gave us their main squad’s email address and we then communicated with players, asking them to express an interest if they wished to be considered for selection for the Super League.”Connor also confirmed the ECB decided to do away with a draft or auction system to lend balance to all the squads. “We met the teams to discuss the balance of their squads,” she said. “Of course, there were a few players that lots of teams wanted. But actually, it worked out really neatly because, once the teams knew which England players they had, that dictated whether they needed an opening bat, spinner, wicketkeeper or whatever. It was just a case of trying to adhere to our principle of getting the best versus the best.”

Sri Lanka Women captain Chamari Atapattu willed and rallied her side to a 10-run victory over South Africa Women in Bangalore, in the last league match of the Women’s World T20.Atapattu first stroked her maiden T20 international fifty, which contained five fours and one six, even as her partners floundered. Atapattu then brought herself into the attack in the defence of 114 and her second over resulted in two wickets. She ran to her right from her follow through, collected a wristy push from Trisha Chetty and flung a throw to the keeper to catch Dane van Niekerk short for 24 off 31 balls. Three balls later, Atapattu pinned her opposite number Mignon du Preez plumb in front for a duck, a wicket the Sri Lanka captain identified as the “turning point” at the post match-presentation.Left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari and left-arm pacer Udeshika Prabodhani backed Atapattu to squeeze South Africa’s middle order. From 50 for 0, South Africa slumped to 102 for 7. Du Preez said: “We had a good start and we lost it in the middle order. We have been struggling with it in the whole tournament. It was also poor execution from us. This is something we need to work on and come back stronger.”Prabodhani speared in full balls and defended 12 off the last over, including taking the wicket of Chloe Tryon for 11 off 10 balls. Though it was just a dead rubber, Sri Lanka toasted the win, and got into a huddle only after wicketkeeper-batsman Dilani Manodara had joined the team from the dug out; Prasadani Weerakkody had taken the gloves in the absence of Manodara.Manodara was pinged on the grille of the helmet when she missed a scoop off her first ball. She scratched around for 4 off 9 balls, before she was bowled by seamer Marcia Letsoalo. Manodara was later sent to the hospital for a scan and it was found that she had no major injuries.Sri Lanka’s middle order folded as well and they managed only 34 for 4 in their last five overs. Atapattu, however, had lifted Sri Lanka with a bevy of muscled slog sweeps. She hit 52 off 49 balls before she was run out by Marizanna Kapp, who was featuring in her 50th T20 international. She picked up two wickets and was complemented by legspinner Suné Luus, who also scalped two wickets. But Attapattu’s act would prove to be too much for South Africa.

New Dolphins coach Grant Morgan relishes 'daunting' task

With a new coach, Grant Morgan, at the helm, Dolphins will now turn their attention to bolstering a depleted squad, ahead of the 2016-17 season

With a new coach, Grant Morgan, at the helm, Dolphins will now turn their attention to bolstering a depleted squad, ahead of the 2016-17 season. The Durban-based franchise lost both active internationals, Kyle Abbott and David Miller, as well as four other players – Jonathan Vandiar, Daniel Sincuba, Matthew Pillans and Ayavuya Myoli – and have only added one name to their outfit so far.Mthokozisi Shezi, who was playing in Cobras but is originally from Dolphins, will return for the next season and CEO Pete de Wet hopes he will not be their only acquisition. “We’ve got some work to do in the next 24 hours with some discussion with potential players,” de Wet said at Morgan’s unveiling. “In an ideal world, we would have had Grant involved with identifying the squad right from the beginning. The core nucleus of the squad is the same but there are a few potential announcements we want to make and we wanted to do that with Grant around.”But de Wet was forced to admit that with the other five franchises’ contract lists all but complete, it could make it difficult for the Dolphins to lure high-profile names to their waters and they may have to fish in their own pond. That would mean promoting players from the KwaZulu-Natal and KwaZulu-Natal Inland provincial teams.”It hasn’t been easy,” de Wet said. “I am of the belief that the squad that we have is really talented and there is a lot of depth. The challenge for Grant will be to get the best of that group of individuals in the next season and to get settled in the role and then to take a slightly longer-term view and see where the deficiencies are and who we need to potentially target and bring in for the following season.”Morgan is not too unhappy with that prospect, especially because he is familiar with the Inland players. He was the team’s head coach since the 2012-13 season, leading them to four trophies in that time. He wants to be able to incorporate more players from Pietermaritzburg into the Dolphins set-up. “We have to make that side of the franchise feel like they are also part of it. When I was there, we did feel like it but we need to do it even more. Although Kingsmead and Durban is our main base, we need to make ‘Maritzburg our home too,” Morgan said. That may mean players like Kyle Nipper, who was second on the provincial three-day competition run charts and Graeme Hume, who was third on the wicket-taker’s list in that format, could come into contention for more regular roles at the franchise. It will also mean Morgan has to keep his eye open for younger talent, something he takes particular pleasure in.”I picked Quinton de Kock in my Gauteng side when he was 15 and a half years old,” Morgan recalled. “We were playing a game against Durham when he faced Steve Harmison. When Quinton walked off the field the score was 85 for 1 and he had made 72. That was one of the greatest days of my life, to watch a guy who hadn’t yet turned 16 cane an international bowler. Hopefully we will have one of those.”At the same time, Morgan also wants to call on some of the Dolphins’ experienced players like Morne van Wyk to add gravitas to a squad in transition. “If a guy is 44 and he is still delivering and he wants to play and he is the best guy for the team, then he must play,” he said.If that’s not enough, Morgan has also been told he is expected to win some silverware with a franchise that has not seen as much success as it has liked. The Dolphins’ only franchise trophy was won in the 2013-14 season when the won the 20-over cup, and they previously shared the first-class title twice. “It’s daunting but every job should be daunting. Every job is your World Cup,” he said.

Logo, vamos pensar no Mundial.
