North Zone led East Zone by 559 runs in the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy after the third day, thanks to four of their batsmen scoring centuries. Unmukt Chand, the first to reach the mark, was joined by Ian Dev Singh, Rajat Paliwal and Nitin Saini before captain Harbhajan Singh furthered North’s advantage by removing East’s opener Pallavkumar Das two overs before stumps.Ian Dev, who had retired hurt on 95 on the second day, returned to the crease after Mandeep Singh’s dismissal in the morning session. He seemed to have shrugged off his discomfort as he charged Shahbaz Nadeem to loft him over extra cover for his 12th four, which took him to a seventh first-class century. He had good support from Paliwal, who reached a half-century, but should have been out lbw soon after to Basant Mohanty. The seamer, however, had overstepped and East were made to pay as Paliwal and Ian Dev added 107 runs for the fourth wicket. Paliwal’s innings suffered a roadblock in the 149th over when a bout of cramps caused him to exit the field. His replacement, Saini, was breezy throughout his knock, picking up four sixes and eight fours.North’s search for quick runs resulted in a period when they lost five wickets for 40 runs, including Ian Dev who mistimed a slog against offspinner Sunny Gupta, who finished as East’s best bowler with 4 for 182 after 46 overs.Paliwal limped back to the crease in the third session, and during a 70-run stand for the ninth wicket with Saini, completed his fifth first-class century. Saini was the more dominant of the two, though he too benefited from a reprieve in the 166th over when a hoick off a full toss was dropped at long-on. He continued attacking the bowlers, striking Gupta for two consecutive sixes in the 190th over and the declaration came on the stroke of Saini’s 137-ball ton, a few overs later. The East openers Das and Rameez Nemat were highly circumspect at the start, scoring only nine runs in seven overs. But just as they were looking comfortable, Harbhajan lured Das out of his crease with a tossed up delivery and wicketkeeper Saini did the rest.Centuries from Abhinav Mukund and B Aparajith and strong middle-order contributions helped South Zone take a mammoth 258-run lead against Central Zone in Chennai. With only a day to go in the match, South Zone are almost through to the final.Mukund and Aparajith, the two overnight batsman, thwarted the bowling and added 190 runs for the third wicket, taking South well past Central’s first-innings score of 209. Mukund’s was a more sedate innings, but Aparajith brought up his second hundred in consecutive matches, hitting three sixes in his innings. Both were dismissed with the score on 263, but Manish Pandey and CM Gautam added 147 runs for the fifth wicket, reaching their respective half-centuries along the way.At the end of the day’s play, South were still left with a wicket in hand. Piyush Chawla picked up four wickets, but leaked 159 runs in his 43 overs. Umesh Yadav picked up just one wicket in his 25 overs.

Pakistan had no reviews left. Morkel was dismissed off Ajmal’s next delivery, caught at first slip by Younis Khan, but the bowler celebrated continued appealing animatedly.Ajmal was charged with breaching Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct which relates to “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match”.The offspinner admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee David Boon.

Pakistan seek to get out of T20 rut

While South Africa have made positive strides in the shortest format over the past month, Pakistan seem to have got stuck in a rut

Big PictureBefore the Twenty20 matches in the UAE started, Pakistan had won their previous five matches and South Africa’s recent record in the shortest format was patchy. Take a look at the form guide below and you will see how that has changed over the last 10 days.Pakistan are now on a losing streak that Mohammad Hafeez lamented they can’t seem to break because “the luck is just not with us”. Fortune abandoned the team – and Wednesday night’s rain was another example of it – just as consistency has attached itself to South Africa.Faf du Plessis’ men seem to have made much-needed strides in a format they were guilty of treating a little too lightly in the past. With role definition evident in the batting line-up and all their frontline bowlers firing, all they would want from their last T20 of the year is to continue on the path they are on now.Pakistan will play Sri Lanka in this format later in the year but they would still value an opportunity to get one over South Africa, especially because they have been under the pump for most of the past month. They showed signs of being able to match the opposition toe to toe in Johannesburg and will hope to pick that up in Cape Town, before the ODI series starts.Form guide(Last five completed games, most recent first)
Pakistan LLLWW
South Africa WWWLWIn the spotlightThe Cape Town crowd have been denied any international action over December because India’s tour will be played on the Highveld and in Durban only, and this is their consolation prize. Tickets have been selling well for the series as a whole – the Wanderers had sold 20,000 tickets for the first T20 although rain meant not all those people turned up – and the crowds are expected to hit a crescendo this weekend. The Cape Town faithful can look forward to a T20 on Friday and an ODI on Sunday. They’re not invited but they may also be interested to know that on Saturday, South Africa’s T20 captain, Faf du Plessis, will marry Imari Visser at a wine farm in their city.Team newsHenry Davids has been released from the squad to play first-class cricket for his franchise which means South Africa have settled on Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock to open. AB de Villiers may come back from being rested in the previous match while David Miller or Wayne Parnell could make way for David Wiese, the allrounder who has not played so far. If Ryan McLaren returns, South Arica could have five seamers at their disposal and will have to make a choice between Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso for the spinners’ role.South Africa: (likely)1 Hashim Amla 2 Quinton de Kock (wk) 3 Faf du Plessis (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy 6 David Miller/David Wiese/Wayne Parnell, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Dale Steyn, 9 Morne Morkel 10 Lonwabo Tsotsobe 11 Imran Tahir/Aaron PhangisoLeaving Saeed Ajmal out because of conditions would have left Pakistan wondering what could have been after their spinners controlled the South African innings. They will likely bring him back at the expense of Anwar Ali, who struggled to get a measure of how to bowl on South African surfaces.Pakistan: (likely) 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 4 Sohaib Maqsood 5 Umar Amin, 6 Umar Akmal (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Bilawal Bhatti, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid KhanStats and trivia Apart from the 2007 World T20, Newlands has only hosted one other international T20, played between Australia and South Africa in the 2011-12 season. Pakistan played two matches at the ground in the inaugural T20 event and won both, beating Bangladesh and New ZealandQuotes”It was one of those MS Dhoni moments when I just went with my gut. But JP has still got a lot more bowling to do and we can use him a lot more.”
“It’s always a match between him and me, so I am ready for the challenge. We’ve competitive in the field and good friends off it.”

Led by a century from their captain Sami Aslam and a fifty from Kamran Ghulam, Pakistan Under-19s held their nerve to secure a two-wicket win over India Under-19s. The win puts them on top of Group A, sealing a spot in the semi-finals. Faced with a target of 251, Aslam kept the chase under control with a well-paced 108 off 119 balls. Once he fell, Ghulam took over, guiding the lower order even as India pulled back with wickets. Two wickets in the 49th and 50th over put some pressure on Pakistan, who were seeking six runs off the last over, but Zafar Gohar hit two fours to seal the victory.Earlier, Ricky Bhui’s 64 helped India post 250 for 7 after regular strikes from the Pakistan bowlers prevented India’s top-order from making good on their starts. Bhui’s knock off 66 balls with three fours and two sixes.Riding on a hundred from Kusal Mendis and an unbeaten 62 from Priyamal Perera, Sri Lanka Under-19s stumbled to a two-wicket win over Bangladesh Under-19s in Abu Dhabi. The win helped them qualify for the semi-finals where they will play India. Set a target of 204, the 108-run fourth-wicket stand between Mendis and Perera put Sri Lanka in a comfortable position at 180 for 3. However, Sri Lanka lost their next five wickets for 13 runs, sliding to 193 for 8, before Perera and AK Tyronne got the required runs. Earlier, a fifty from Nazmul Hossain Shanto, and useful contributions from Mosaddek Hossain and Yasir Ali helped Bangladesh put up 203 for 6.Afghanistan Under-19s needed a total of just 26.4 overs to thump Malaysia Under-19s by 10 wickets in Abu Dhabi. Malaysia, who were bundled out for 50 and 32 in their previous two games, collapsed once again for 40 as medium-pacer Sayed Shirzad spearheaded an incisive bowling performance from Afghanistan. Malaysia’s captain Muhammad Ramli was the team’s top-scorer with 12, while their other 10 batsmen collectively contributed just 22 runs between them. Shirzad finished with 4 for 10, and Abdullah Adil picked up three scalps. to bowl Malaysia in 23.2 overs.Afghanistan’s openers Shahidullah and Ihsanullah completed the paltry chase in just 20 balls, hitting five fours and a six between them. Afghanistan will now play Pakistan in the semi-finals.A four-for from left-arm spinner Sushan Bhari and a knock of 48 from Aarif Sheikh helped Nepal Under-19s seal a four-wicket win over United Arab Emirates Under-19s in Sharjah. Nepal were struggling at 49 for 3 before Sheikh anchored the chase with useful partnerships. After Sheikh was out, Siddhant Lohani and Rahul Pratap Singh ensured Nepal ended up on the winning side, finishing the game in 33 overs. Earlier, Bhari and left-arm pacer Lalit Bhandari kept chipping away with wickets to restrict UAE to 159. Dan D’Souza was the top-scorer for UAE with 32, in an innings where a few other batsmen got starts but couldn’t play on. Bhari finished with 4 for 34, while Bhandari took 3 for 43.
