Tasmania's third Shield win, Ponting's first

A draw was all Tasmania needed for their third Sheffield Shield triumph, and a draw was what they celebrated after a relatively uneventful final day at Bellerive Oval, Hobart

A draw was all Tasmania needed for their third Sheffield Shield triumph, and a draw was what they celebrated after a relatively uneventful final day at Bellerive Oval, Hobart. The title-winning moment came not with a wicket, but a solid front-foot defensive stroke from Hartley. But the celebrations were no less emotive or spontaneous. Twenty years after his debut for Tasmania, Ricky Ponting finally added a Sheffield Shield title to his long list of career achievements.Queensland took the final three wickets of Tasmania’s second innings within the first seven overs of the morning. James Faulkner, who batted so superbly yesterday, fell 11 runs short of his maiden first-class century when he gloved an attempted hook off Michael Neser through to keeper Chris Hartley. Faulkner’s disappointment of missing a century would have been tempered by his well-deserved Man-of-the-Match award.Luke Butterworth holed out to deep square leg five balls later. Cameron Gannon bounced out Ben Hilfenhaus in the next over. The last four Tasmanian wickets fell to short balls on a surface seemingly lacking life and bounce. It left Queensland needing 446 from 87 overs for the unlikeliest of victories. The Bulls never made any attempt to chase the set target. The run-rate scarcely exceeded two-per-over throughout the day. Both Bulls openers, Luke Pomersbach and Greg Moller, like their Tasmananian counterparts yesterday, dragged balls onto their stumps attempting horizontal bat strokes. Peter Forrest became Evan Gulbis’ fifth victim of the match when he played the wrong line and lost his off stump.Nathan Reardon and Joe Burns put together a 63-run stand from 187 deliveries before Luke Butterworth nipped one through the gate to end Burns’ season on the stroke of tea. Reardon made his way to just his third first-class fifty before a searing yorker from Ben Hilfenhaus struck him on the toe in front of off stump. The game looked destined for a draw with Hartley and James Hopes defending stoutly. But when Butterworth trapped the Bulls skipper with 10 overs remaining there was a possibility of Tasmania claiming an outright win. But Hartley and Neser ensured that result never eventuated.

Team missing Zaheer, says Jennings

Ray Jennings has said that Royal Challengers Bangalore are missing the experience and skill of Zaheer Khan, especially in pressure situations, over the last few weeks

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Apr-2013

RCB coach Ray Jennings has stated that the loss of Zaheer Khan to injury has dealt a big blow to the team when it comes to having an experienced bowler during pressure situations•AFP

Batting worries nag Royal Challengers

Royal Challengers opener Mayank Agarwal is likely to miss the rest of the IPL campaign after he broke his finger while fielding in the match against Super Kings. Attempting to save a four from Ravindra Jadeja in the 16th over, Agarwal threw himself full stretch to his right to save two runs, but in the process dug his little finger on the right hand into the ground. Jennings confirmed Agarwal’s broken finger, which was operated on Sunday, and has been advised at least four weeks rest.
According to Jennings, the franchise was keenly awaiting the return of Indian top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who has missed the first two weeks of the IPL, recovering from a finger injury he picked up during the final Test of the Australia series in Delhi last month. Pujara’s fitness will be assessed on Monday and a call will be taken by the team management soon.

Ray Jennings, the coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore, feels that the continuing absence of Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan with a side strain has affected the team, especially during pressure situations like the last-ball defeat against Chennai Super Kings last Saturday. Zaheer, he said, suffered a strain on the left side during the team’s first training session in the week leading into the IPL and hasn’t bowled since.”You are always going to miss any guy with that amount of experience because he has done it so often and he can actually handle the pressure,” Jennings said. “So, of course, you do miss players like that, any team would.” Zaheer was the second-highest wicket-taker for Royal Challengers last season. Zaheer’s presence was missed on last Saturday’s encounter against Chennai Super Kings, where RP Singh bowled an underwhelming over to hand Super Kings a last-ball victory. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, another misfiring last over from Royal Challengers pushed the game into a Super Over, with Sunrisers’ Cameron White stealing the show from there.Zaheer has been struggling with injuries in the last few months and had come to the IPL fresh off a calf injury that forced him to miss the knockout matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, and subsequently the Irani Trophy. Not only was his fitness an issue but a loss of form was a big factor behind the Indian selectors losing confidence in him.Zaheer last played for India during the third Test of the home series in England. He was ignored for the ODI leg of the England series and then dropped from the four-Test Australia series. He did not feature in the 30-strong Indian probables shortlisted for the Champions Trophy, which is to be held in England in June. However, Jennings maintained that the franchise had enough faith in the left-arm seamer who, he said, was working hard to regain complete fitness. “Zak (Zaheer) has a lot to offer, and is always around the players helping them as well. He has worked every day in the gym, and has the trainer on his case to make sure he is 100% fit, and [that] the recovery from the injury happens soon.”This is Zaheer’s second stint at the Royal Challengers. His first came in 2008; he was traded to Mumbai Indians for the 2009 season and was bought at the 2011 auction by the Royal Challengers. In his 42 matches, he has picked up 44 wickets at an economy rate of 7.85 and is the third-best bowler for the franchise in the IPL.Asked if there was a possibility of Zaheer’s returning soon, Jennings felt the second half of the tournament was a fair bet. “There is no doubt. [The] back nine will be the business end of the tournament where we would need his experience, and hopefully he will be ready. At this stage we want him getting into the act of doing some bowling and that is why the fitness aspect is important, because if you let that go then he is not going to be strong enough to bowl. Once the injury is rectified, it is going to take one or two nets sessions to make sure he is bowling fit,” Jennings said.At the auction this year, Royal Challengers picked seven new players, out of which four were specialist fast bowlers, swelling the quick bowling numbers in the squad to ten. Asked to explain the reason behind having so many fast bowlers in the squad, Jennings said the plan was really to have multiple options.”My feeling in the IPL is to have a limited amount of batsmen because of the lesser opportunities available to them, so you need to settle the guys down. As far as the bowlers go, Virat, the boss (Vijay Mallya) and myself felt that having a larger group is beneficial as bowlers tend to have injuries.” Citing an example, Jennings used left-arm Indian fast bowler RP Singh, who was coming into the tournament having recuperated from a long injury lay-off which had kept him out of the domestic season after the IPL last year, and the franchise did not want to take a chance in case RP was injured early on. “We just felt that if we were going have an extra player, then we should have one in the bowling department.”

Preview of the match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Jaipur

The Preview by Nikita Bastian28-Apr-2013Match factsApril 29, 2013
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)Royal Challengers Bangalore have a point to prove•BCCI

Big PictureFor a team at the top end of the points table, Royal Challengers Bangalore seem to have many doubters at the moment, all of them asking whether the side is capable of winning away from the Chinnaswamy Stadium. They did nothing to dispel the doubts with an utterly sub-par performance against Mumbai Indians on Saturday, and next up they have one of the tougher away assignments in the IPL: Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. The numbers this season seem to warrant questions, with Royal Challengers winning six out of six at home and losing three of three away. However, as captain Virat Kohli pointed out, in Hyderabad it came down to a Super Over and in Chennai the difference between a win and a loss was “two inches”. For relief, Royal Challengers can also look to the results from last year, when they won five of eight away and only three of seven completed games at home. After the Royals game, they have four more games on the road before returning to the Chinnaswamy. They will be keen to silence the detractors sooner rather than later. To do that in Jaipur, they will have to hand the home team their first defeat at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium this season. Royals have won four out of four here, with particularly dominant showings in their previous two games: they crushed Mumbai Indians by 87 runs on April 17, bowling them out for 92, before reducing Sunrisers Hyderabad to 29 for 6 on Saturday. Sunrisers might have recovered to 144, but Shane Watson proceeded to slam 98 off 53 balls – ending two short of consecutive hundreds – to ensure the home team ended on a big high. The Jaipur pitch has been assisting the seamers this season, offering bounce and movement, and once again Royals are likely to pack the side with pace bowlers. They would have noticed how Royal Challengers’ top order struggled against high-quality pace bowling in Mumbai and will be looking to produce some of the same to keep their batting stars in check.Form guideRoyal Challengers Bangalore LWWWL (most recent first)
Rajasthan Royals WLLWWIn the spotlightTillakaratne Dilshan has 76 runs in five innings at 15.20 in this IPL. More damningly, his strike rate has been 81.72. Against Mumbai Indians, facing fellow Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga, he swung and missed with regularity. He has done so a lot this season. Royal Challengers will have to decide whether the out-of-form Dilshan commands one of the overseas players spots in their XI, especially with the Jaipur pitch promising a stern test for the batsmen facing the new ball.Fast bowler James Faulkner claimed the first five-for of IPL 2013 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. At the end of the game, he led the tournament’s wicket tally. He has conceded less than a run-a-ball so far. In Australia’s first-class competition this season, he played a central role in Tasmania’s triumph with 39 wickets at 20.33. Last week, he was named in Australia’s Ashes squad. Safe to say, he’s enjoying a purple patch. Royals will need him to keep firing well into the business end of the tournament.Stats and Trivia Chris Gayle, with 54.97, is the only player with a batting average over 50 in the IPL (min 1000 runs). Shane Watson is one of only three players averaging in the 40s – his 42.08 is fourth on the list, behind Gayle, Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh Ajit Chandila’s economy rate of 4.66 is the best among bowlers who have bowled 15 overs or more in IPL 2013Quotes”Just one off day and people have already started saying we can’t win away from home. But the [previous] two [away] games that we lost were not thrashings but last-ball finishes. Had we executed our plans well, we would have had eight wins out of nine.”
“My main role is to bowl with the new ball and my thinking is to bowl dot balls. The more the dot balls I bowl, the better it is for me – the batsmen try to attack and I get wickets.”
