Cardiff City – A gamble too far!

After a hectic Christmas period, Cardiff City sat pretty at the top of the Championship going into their third round FA Cup meeting with Macclesfield Town.

Bluebird supporters were relishing the idea of a cup run after a much weakened side had lost in the first round of the Capitol One Cup.

However two days before the tie, manager Malky Mackay gave media interviews in which he said he was unwilling to flog his team to death and would be sending out a completely changed team. Quite how changed still came as a shock, as the development squad with the addition of the silver fox Kevin MacNaughton and former club captain Stephen McPhail took to the field.

Despite the much weakened team which the Bluebirds had turned out, Cardiff City kicked the game off with the large away following behind them or rather supporters had pre-booked their away trip with their team expecting to see a team that at included a few squad players in the place of key players, but nothing like the wholesale change that met them. Yes Macclesfield were eighty-one places below The Bluebirds, but FA Cup history dictates that it doesn’t mean they were going to show reverence and respect, simply rollover and die and that is exactly how the game panned out…

Malky Mackay’s side for long periods of the game looked like they didn’t know each other as pass after pass went astray. Hopes were raised for the Bluebirds when Filip Kiss was hacked down twenty-five yards from goal. Stephen McPhail stepped up to take the free kick, but his strike deflected off the wall straight into the hands of the Macclesfield ‘keeper.

City’s passing was sloppy, when yet another ball was delivered lacking the required pace Charlie Henry intercepted. He drove forward and fired a shot goalwards from just outside the penalty area, but Cardiff ‘keeper Joe Lewis was able to gather the ball with relative ease as the shot was struck straight down his throat.

Cardiff continued to push forward but they could not find the clinical touch in the final third. The Silkmen were not sitting back either and it was uncomfortable viewing for Cardiff City supporters, especially when It was the home side who almost broke the deadlock!

Macclesfield’s John Paul Kissock slotted the ball through the Cardiff defence looking for the onrushing Amari Morgan-Smith. Morgan-Smith looked to be one on one with the keeper, but a timely intervention from Adedeji Oshilaja saved the Bluebirds blushes for the time being at least.

Joe Ralls was lively for Cardiff City showing his class and underlining the mistake of leaving the entire first team at home!  Ralls seemed to be the sole instigator of any attack City produced, the game screamed out for the likes of Mason or Noone.

On forty-one minutes Ralls went on a driving run from half way, thirty yards from goal he found Declan John ahead of him. John rode out a strong challenge that maybe a more experienced player would have gone down for, instead he stayed on his feet carrying the ball into the box.  However his cross come shot was easily parried away by Macclesfield goalkeeper Cronin. With a minute left in the first half the home fans roared for a penalty. Oshilaja shoved Morgan-Smith off the ball the officials were unimpressed with the players and fans calls for a penalty and the whistle blew, for half time, the players and officials were promptly booed off the field.

The home side started the second half the brightest, Ben Nugent was forced to make an important block early and Town had a series of corners, but the City defence stood firm and weathered the storm. Suddenly on the hour mark, Cardiff City sprang into life, Velikonja made a darting run into the opposition half and played the ball to Declan John. John went on a run hugging the sideline, got to the by-line, squaring across to Nat Jarvis who slotted the ball home under Lance Cronin.

A flurry of substitutions ensued – Macclesfield Town: Jack Mackreth on for Charlie Henry , Cardiff City Substituted: Tommy O’Sullivan for Kadeem Harris And just a minute later Macclesfield brought on Peter Winn on for Carl Martin . The Silkmen pushed on looking for the equaliser. They forced a corner and started to unleash dangerous shots on goal at every open. Cardiff City were slowly starting to makes a few chances were too. A powerful shot from Filip Kiss cannoned off a defender and landed at the feet of Declan John, but his effort tamely ended up in the arms of the Macclesfield keeper.

They then had another penalty shout turned down when Craig Braham-Barrett dribbled in-between John and Oshilaja and was seemingly felled the referee held his arms out and signaled play on.The home side continued to throw men forward with most of their chances coming down the right flank. After one such move Jack Mackreth played a tantalising cross to the back post, the ball landed at the feet of Matthew Barnes Homer who gleefully placed the ball into the back of Joe Lewis’ goal.

Macclesfield were in no mood to settle for a replay and continued to push forward. With six minutes left they were awarded a free kick in the Cardiff half. Pablo Mills played a lofted ball into the area, and the referee blew up and pointed to the spot giving the penalty for a handball offence against Nat Jarvis. Barnes-Homer picked up the ball looking for his second of the evening. He confidently stepped up and unleashed a rocket of a shot into the bottom left corner.

Cardiff had nothing left to offer in the remaining minutes – their heads had gone down. The upset was complete. The big upset belonged embarrassingly to the championship leaders, who had either been over confident in fielding practically a youth team or had made the conscious decision to concentrate their season priorities solely on the Championship campaign.

Such a decision if it were so is an insult to the clubs history, the supporters of both teams and that too of the FA Cup – the jewel in the football crown for many supporters the world over. Cardiff city supporters were yet again this season, left divided – this time between the wisdom of ‘not really trying’ and being happy there can be now no distractions in the attempt to reach the promised land, and those who felt cheated.

Just two more experienced players in key positions would, in all probability, have sealed a victory and leaving out all the first team for fear of injury rang hollow, injuries are often picked up in training. More fringe and bench players could have been employed – where was the seemingly ever present Don Cowie? So ever present he had played Santa’s helper for The Bluebirds at their afternoon for disadvantaged children…..

All in all an embarrassing day for a club already widely deviled by many the world over for their abandonment of tradition and history this season….

Ferdinand ready to answer Hodgson SOS call

Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand is ready to make a shock return to the England squad, should manager Roy Hodgson require his services, according to reports from The Mirror.

The 34-year-old had previously omitted from the Three Lions’ set-up for “football reasons” ahead of EURO 2012, amid speculation that only one of he and John Terry could be picked due allegations of racial abuse between the Chelsea man and Ferdinand’s brother Anton.

But, with the United star, arguably, the nation’s in-form centre-back, he could be in line for a shock recall from Hodgson.

Ferdinand has been playing regularly for the Premier League leaders, and appears to have made a recovery from a series of niggling injuries which have disrupted his playing time in recent years.

There are concerns that he is not a long-term solution for England, but Hodgson may allay these fears in a bid to assemble a strong squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Montenegro.

Ferdinand has not represented his country since 2011, but has previously said that he would never reject the call if needed:

“I’m no different to anyone else – I love playing for England. If I’m not then I’ll keep doing what I’m doing for Manchester United.”

Tottenham’s Michael Dawson is also set for a recall, following some impressive performances with the North Londoners.

Madrid set to tempt Tottenham with player exchange deal

Tottenham could be tempted to sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid as the Spanish giants are planning to include hitman Gonzalo Higuain in the offer.

The Bernabeu chiefs seem determined to sign the Premier League star, and are preparing a bid of over £50million, according to The Metro.

Spurs are reluctant to sell and chairman Daniel Levy will not let the winger go for anything other than a hefty fee, but the inclusion of the Argentinian could grease the wheels somewhat.

If Bale leaves White Hart Lane, Villas-Boas would be in need of an attacking player to join Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor up front.

Higuain would be the answer to that problem and the transfer would still leave a good amount of money attached to it to be used in strengthening the squad elsewhere.

Real Madrid would offload a player that, despite being of Mourinho and the fans’ liking, is lacking opportunities as Karim Benzema has regularly been the first choice frontman this season.

Spurs reportedly enquired after Higuain last summer, but the 25-year-old decided to stay and try and prove himself at the Bernabeu.

After a year without many chances and with the possible arrival of Bale adding to the competition in the Los Blancos’ attacking line, a top-four finish could be all Higuain needs to be convinced to set sail for White Hart Lane.

West Ham considering a move for Jelavic

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is said to be considering a move for Everton striker Nikica Jelavic instead off Andy Carroll, according to the Sun.

The Hammers have been looking to bring in Carroll in the summer after a relatively successful season on loan at the club from Liverpool but his price tag may force them to look elsewhere.

Allardyce is looking at landing the Croatian international Jelavic who has had a poor campaign this time around but was excellent when he arrived at Goodison Park.

Despite just one goal this year, Jelavic scored 11 goals in just 16 appearances when he arrived at the club from Rangers and that sort of possible form is what attracts Allardyce.

David Moyes insisted at the weekend he retains faith in his striker, but the player himself is said to be considering his position at the club as he is no longer guaranteed a starting place in the side.

Van der Sar claims Rooney’s ‘important’ to Reds

Wayne Rooney ‘is really important for Manchester United’ and should stay put with the club this summer, according to Edwin van der Sar.

The former Red Devils goalkeeper, who is currently marketing director with Dutch giants Ajax, has spoken out on his ex-Old Trafford team-mate who has been linked with a move away from the Premier League champions this summer.

Outgoing boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney had requested a transfer, while the player has since denied it and suggested he was being forced out by the club who have subsequently claimed he is not for sale.

Paris Saint-Germain are lining up a massive deal to try and lure Rooney to France, but Van der Sar said he would like the 27-year-old England international to remain with United and start afresh under new boss David Moyes.

He told BBC Radio 5 live’s Sportsweek programme: “There has been so much pressure on him, you build him up and put all your money on him to make England world or European champions.

“So it’s also quite easy to cut him down again. Players have indifferent seasons and maybe Wayne’s been overtaken by Robin van Persie this year but it’s the hard work that he puts in for the team (that should be recognised).”

Rooney only managed 12 goals for United last season, while Van Persie won the plaudits with 26 following his arrival from Arsenal last summer.

And Van der Sar added: “It was maybe a lesser season (for Rooney) and he didn’t play the last couple of games but he’s really important for United.

“English players tend to stay in England to play their football and rightly so because you have big clubs, the tradition and the stadiums are always full.

“With the change of manager and backroom staff it could be a big change for Manchester United but I don’t think you’ll find a better atmosphere at many other clubs.”

Liverpool tracking Valencia ace

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is eyeing up a cut price move for Valencia left back Aly Cissokho, according to the Daily Mirror.

Rodgers is keen to add stability to his back four after inconsistent performances from the likes of Jose Enrique and Martin Skrtel last season as well as the retirement of club legend Jamie Carragher.

The Reds have not yet done much business this summer and are waiting to see what happens with star man Luis Suarez before making any major acquisitions.

Valencia are facing another summer of struggle and perhaps losing their best players as their financial woes worsen.

The La Liga side have sold the likes of David Silva, David Villa and Jordi Alba over the past few seasons and are set to lose key men like Cissokho again this time around.

Liverpool believe they could secure a £4million deal for the France international in the coming weeks.

Premier League Preview – Cardiff City

Last season: The Bluebirds are one of the three teams advancing to the Premier League this season. This will be the first time Welsh side appear in the Premier League and one could assume they are hungry for recognition and are here to stay.

The Welsh side finished first in last year’s Championship table with 87 points, eight points ahead of Hull City. Malky Mackay’s team managed to win 25 games out of 46 and lost nine. They had a good home record, where they only lost two games, won 15 and conceded only 15 goals.

They are a consistent side that can score goals away from home and keep clean sheets which may earn them a lot of precious points this season. This is a team that works together as one unit as there is no mystery about why their top scorer is not on the top ten goal scorers of the Championship. However, the Premier League is no Championship.

Transfer Ins:

Gary Medel (Sevilla)

Steven Caulker (Tottenham Hotspur)

Simon Moore (Brentford)

John Brayford (Derby County)

Andreas Cornelius (Copenhagen)

Transfer Outs:

Elliot Parish (Bristol City)

Jesse Darko (AO Episkopi Rethymno)

Stephen McPhail

Nathaniel Jarvis

Heidar Helguson (End of career)

Player to watch: The Bluebirds have just lost last season’s top scorer, Heidar Helguson, who netted eight goals but have still got Peter Whittingham and the Iceland international midfielder Aron Gunnarsson who both scored the same amount of goals.

They also boast players like Fraizer Campbell who scored seven goals and comes from Manchester United’s academy and was with Sunderland for four years with 58 appearances and six goals to his name. He also had one appearance with the England national team in 2012.

The 25-year-old forward is technically gifted – proven by his good dribbling skills, speed, shooting abilities and impressive playing style.

Cardiff also have Craig Bellamy up front who is no stranger to the Premier League – playing for Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City previously. Although he is now 34 years old he can help with his experience and push the team’s youngsters to improve their game. In his four-year tenure at Newcastle he managed to score 28 goals for the Magpies.

Young player to watch: The most promising talent from Tottenham’s academy in recent years Steven Caulker could be able to bring a lot to the table with his abilities at the back. The 21-year-old has earned the trust of Roy Hodgson and is now a part of the England senior squad. His departure from Spurs also brought a lot of reaction from the fans as they couldn’t understand Daniel Levy’s motives, so Cardiff might have hit the jackpot on this one.

Player needing to improve: The whole team will have to improve on the goal-scoring part as they had no top scorer in the top 10 positions of the Championship last season. The forwards will have to find the back of the net as this will be the most important factor in keeping the team away from relegation.

Prediction: This is a team that stood their ground well in the Championship and has proven that their qualification to the Premier League was no fluke. The newcomers could provide other Premier League teams with a few shocks if anyone dares to underestimate them.

If they manage to use their home advantage then they can get nab unbelievably precious points and survive in their debut Premier League season.

Our prediction: 17th place.

Chelsea are robbed as Arsenal get VIP treatment

Jose Mourinho reckons the fixture list has hindered Chelsea’s bid for Capital One Cup success, and given an unfair advantage to Arsenal, according to the Daily Star.

The Special One is angry that his side must travel to the Emirates just 48 hours after a pulsating Premier League clash with Manchester City, and reckons the supporters have been robbed of a great spectacle between two in-form sides.

Chelsea were the final team to play over the Premier League weekend, beating Manchester City in yesterday’s afternoon kick off thanks to a late winner from Fernando Torres.

Meanwhile Arsenal picked up three points to keep them top of the table with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Sehurst Park in the early Saturday game.

“We are going to give the game that the people that put the game on Tuesday want,” Mourinho said.

“If they want a big game, we cannot give the big game.

“If they want the players that were playing (on Sunday), we cannot give them that.

“If they want Arsenal to win a trophy, that’s a help, because if they want a big game between two big teams in London, they should put the game on Wednesday and not on Tuesday.”

Liverpool and Arsenal fans react to referee shocker

Howard Webb has made the headlines again after a controversial refereeing display in the FA Cup fifth round tie between Arsenal and Liverpool yesterday.

The World Cup-bound official was widely accused of biased officiating in favour of Arsenal after failing to award Liverpool a penalty when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain brutally floored Luis Suarez in the penalty box.

And he’s no stranger to being in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, which suggests he enjoys being the centre of attention, particularly as he knows he is the FA’s prodigal son who will be representing the country in this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

But yesterday’s controversy at the Emirates had thousands of fans taking to Twitter to condemn his performance and question his reputation as one of the world’s best referees…

Video Game Review: 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

EA Sports’ 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is a must-have purchase for any genuine football fan who loves to bask in the splendour of the world’s biggest sporting spectacle.

Released on XBOX 360 and PS3 as opposed to fourth generation consoles given low-rate adoption rates in the host nation of Brazil, this means many more people can mimic some Messi magic, serve up some slick football with Spain or conquer the competition with Colombia.

But isn’t it just FIFA 14 with more international teams I hear you cry? 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil offers gamers a fun-filled, arcade-like experience which captures the colour, excitement and nerves surrounding the tournament, all in one tightly-packaged offering.

The gameplay feels different from FIFA 14 in the way that dribbling, increased accuracy in passing and players’ first touches play out. This is not to mention more game modes than ever before with the ever-popular Captain Your County returning, refined and slicker than previous instalments.

With matches taking place within all of Brazil’s 12 official licensed stadia, including the renovated football Mecca that is the Maracana, not to mention realistic manager graphics being retained – yes, you can see Roy Hodgson fall to his knees with joy – this all distinguishes the title from FIFA for cynical gamers.

Each exhibition match is laced with caps of how shall we say – lively and colourful supporters bouncing up and down – with small previews of the ever-popular fan parks around the globe illuminating feelings of suspense and jubilation during the in-play.

Sure; militant fans will instantly recognise that Diego Costa is missing from Spain’s roster and Steven Taylor features in England’s squad despite never making a first team appearance for the Three Lions but with the accurate roster updates to come, has FIFA ever offered you the chance to play as China against Kyrgyzstan?
