The shoulder injury to Gautam Gambhir had not been playing just on the selectors’ minds when they got together to pick the team for the Test series in the West Indies. Abhinav Mukund was among the frontrunners to replace Gambhir, like he had done last year in the Bangalore Test against Australia, and his call-up in Virender Sehwag’s absence means he is likely to open the innings with his Tamil Nadu team-mate M Vijay in the Caribbean.”There was a lot of talk of me replacing Gambhir, so that played on my mind as well,” Mukund told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve been doing very well in the last two years in domestic cricket, I’m glad the selectors have taken notice of that. My efforts have paid off.”Mukund, 21, made his debut in 2007, and in 40 first-class games, he has averaged 59.41 with 13 centuries, including a triple-ton. He began the 2010-11 domestic season with 161 and 63 in the Irani Cup, finished as Tamil Nadu’s second-highest run scorer in the Ranji Trophy and scored a century in each innings of the Duleep Trophy semi-final for South Zone.Joining Mukund on the tour are his state team-mates, Vijay and S Badrinath. “Vijay and I opened a lot together initially and we understand each other’s game well,” Mukund said. “We share a very good rapport and our past experience in opening together will definitely help us.”Vijay and Mukund amassed 462 for the first wicket in a Ranji Trophy game against Maharashtra in 2008-09 and could well pair up again in the absence of Gambhir and Sehwag. Although Mukund admitted filling the void would be a tough task, he was confident his mental strength would hold him in good stead. “My temperament is my biggest strength,” he said. “I learnt a lot about that from Badri. Even Sachin told me that he constantly keeps working on his game and I’m only starting out in international cricket.”Mukund is part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in the IPL but hasn’t played a game this season. He’s been in the company of several others whose brains he’s been picking through the tournament. “I’ve been spending time with the left-handers in my team, mainly Suresh Raina and Michael Hussey, and their inputs will certainly help.”Mukund, who’s been part of India’s Under-19 team, the A team tour of England and the National Cricket Academy in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, won a Border-Gavaskar Scholarship in 2009 and spent five weeks at the Center of Excellence in Brisbane. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo last year Mukund had said: “I learnt how to be self-sufficient in life. The facilities were amazing. It was a good experience batting against the Kookaburra ball, especially against the bowling machine. I also got good exposure against the short ball.”And now, after another successful Ranji season, he’s won the selectors over and is preparing for his first international tour with the national team as its youngest member. “I had been part of the Test squad in Bangalore, it just feels good to be sharing the dressing room with them once again.”Another player who was expecting the call-up for the tour was Parthiv Patel, who will double up as reserve wicketkeeper and reserve opener. He is returning to the Test fold after an absence of three years. “I was expecting it a little bit based on my domestic showing in the last few years,” said Parthiv, who last played in 2008.Parthiv made his debut on the 2002 tour of England but has played only 20 Tests because he found chances hard to come by once MS Dhoni secured his spot as wicketkeeper. He has continued being a strong performer in domestic cricket, scoring 526 runs at an average of 47.81 in the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy and 727 at 66.09 in 2009-10.A century in the Irani Trophy boosted his confidence in 2010-11 after which he scored consecutive fifties while opening in the ODIs against New Zealand. He opened in two ODIs in South Africa as well, scored 49 runs, but worked on his game under coach Gary Kirsten.”If I have learned anything it that I need to focus more and I need to tighten my defence,” Parthiv said. “He [Kirsten] was instrumental in me changing my thoughts with respect to approaching a match. For example in South Africa, he said that the ball moves a lot initially and the essential thing for me to do was to be on top of the ball. These are pretty basic things but the way he told me made a big impression.”I have been working hard on my game and I now believe in my game more. That makes me more confident compared to in the past.”Also making a comeback is Manoj Tiwary, whose only ODI innings in 2008 was terminated early by a crushing Brett Lee yorker. Tiwary, who’s part of the ODI squad for the West Indies tour, was beset by injuries and poor form and has taken a couple of seasons to work himself back in to contention. “I should be honest enough to admit that when I was bowled by a Brett Lee yorker in Brisbane, I wasn’t matured enough. Now I have played three more seasons of first-class cricket,” Tiwary told . “I have done well in IPL against international bowlers. Definitely the confidence level and the self belief has improved.”

Spin twins Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq bowled Yorkshire to a breathtaking victory by 11 runs with five balls remaining in a tight Roses clash in the Friends Life t20 North Group at Headingley Carnegie.Chasing a 179 target, Lancashire lost two wickets in Rafiq’s first over before they were further hit by Rashid who claimed three wickets in five balls. Even then they were not quite down and out because Jordan Clark lashed Richard Pyrah for two sixes and a four off successive balls in the penultimate over which cost 24 runs.These blows hurried Lancashire on to 167 for 9 but with 12 wanted off the final over, Gary Keedy attempted to run a bye off Ryan Sidebottom’s first ball and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow threw into the stumps to run out Clark who had struck 38 from 18 deliveries with three fours and two sixes.Yorkshire joyously celebrated a Roses double which leapfrogged them above their opponents in the table and at the same time boosted their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals. It was Lancashire’s third defeat in 10 days.The heavy rain which had been forecast managed to hold off – much to the delight of the majority in the 13,000 crowd. Rashid finished with 4 for 26 – his third haul of three wickets or more in five matches – and Rafiq had 2 for 29 from his four overs but the Man-of-the-Match award went to Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale who held his side together with a well-judged 60 after they had been put in to bat.He received excellent support from Bairstow in an opening stand of 69 inside eight overs, Yorkshire’s best start of the season. Gale bludgeoned two fours in the opening over from Luke Procter and Bairstow made Tom Smith suffer by smashing him for two fours and a big six over backward square leg.Sajid Mahmood helped to stem the flow of runs but it was Keedy who came on to make the initial breakthrough by having Bairstow lbw for 32 from 19 balls with five fours and a six as the batsman failed to make contact with an intended reverse sweep.Adam Lyth maintained the momentum in a 65 stand in 7.3 overs with Gale who had smacked six fours and a six off 46 deliveries before he hit a full toss from Smith to mid-off. Lyth gave a return catch to Mahmood off a slower ball after making 45 from 33 balls and Gary Ballance’s unbeaten 25 included successive sixes on either side of the wicket at Smith’s expense.Stephen Moore and Smith began brightly in poor light for Lancashire but at 26 in the third over Moore was run out by Joe Root’s direct hit from the boundary edge. Smith was caught and bowled by Rashid in the next over to make it 27 for 2.Then Rafiq entered the attack to bowl Steven Croft middle stump with his first ball and trap Mahmood lbw with his fifth. Karl Brown and Gareth Cross staged something of a recovery with a 51 stand in seven overs before Rashid’s dramatic intervention in the 15th over.He had Cross lbw for 30 aiming to leg, enticed Brown into giving Rafiq a catch above his head at long-off and gained another lbw verdict against Procter. Kyle Hogg and Steven Parry lost their stumps to Ajmal Shahzad and Sidebottom respectively but Clark’s lusty blows kept Lancashire interested right to the end.

Craig Kieswetter has warned Matt Prior he faces a fight to hang on to his gloves, declaring it is his ambition to become England’s first-choice wicketkeeper “in all forms of the game”. Kieswetter showcased his ability at last year’s World Twenty20 in the West Indies, most notably smashing a match-winning 63 off 49 balls in a seven-wicket defeat of Australia in the final, but has since fallen out of contention for national honours.”In that World Twenty20 side most of us were probably in the best form of our careers, certainly I was,” he told . “In the final we just said, ‘We might as well try and win this properly.’ They [Australia] had four quicks so there was nowhere to hide. KP [Kevin Pietersen] and I thought, ‘We might as well have a crack.’ We were a bit lucky. But we played some rather good shots too.”Four months on from his swashbuckling efforts, Kieswetter found himself being dropped following a slump in form. And, although he backed the decision, he admits returning to county cricket with his tail between his legs was a hard pill to swallow.”It was really disappointing,” he said. “I was part of the side that won a World Cup. But realistically, when I look at the way I played back in England against Australia and Bangladesh, it was a warranted decision. International cricket is a cut-throat business. It was a tough year. Coming back to your county after being dropped is one of the hardest transitions a player has to go through. That showed in my performances for a while.”I’m lucky in that coming back to Somerset, they see the players as a family and if you’re struggling you don’t have to fight it yourself. Brian Rose, Andy Hurry and Marcus [Trescothick] were a massive help to me.”Naturally a very attacking batsman, Kieswetter has spent the last year rebuilding and, with seven first-class hundreds, an improving average and a hugely encouraging England Lions tour of the West Indies now behind him, he is ready to resume his challenge of becoming England’s main man behind the stumps.”It is my ambition to become England’s wicketkeeper in all forms of the game,” he said. “Obviously Matt Prior’s got the gloves at the moment but it’s my duty to push him as hard as possible.”Over the winter, I was fortunate enough to work really hard with Thorpey [former England batsman Graham Thorpe] at the ECB academy in Australia and then in the West Indies. I made a few improvements that seem to be paying off. There were a few technical points but it was more about being able to settle into the platform of four-day cricket; that mentality of being able to bat for a long time and make big scores.”Thorpe believes the youngster is a player with the brightest of futures, saying: “Craig is a genuinely talented player with lots of shots. You don’t want to kill that flair. But it’s about rounding out his game, being able to score all round the pitch. People remember him from the Twenty20, but I think there’s a lot more in him than that, as a player. He had a taste of it. I suppose he didn’t seem like a complete player – we never are – but for him it’s about converting those starts and really pushing on.”With England’s ODI and 20-over squads set to be announced this week, Kieswetter is eyeing a recall – though if he is selected it is likely to be as an opener.”Opening, you have to control yourself emotionally,” he said. “The adrenaline is pumping. All the great one-day opening batsman can rein that feeling in. I’ve spoken about it with Marcus, how you hit a boundary and there’s a massive cheer, and then another one and you just want more.”

He can’t talk about the cricket administration or cricket,” sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told . “I have written to the chairman of the cricket board to go into this and get me a report immediately.”Sri Lanka Cricket’s only official response so far has been to state that it is unable to comment given that the team is currently on tour in England.In an hour-long MCC Spirit of Cricket speech that earned him a standing ovation, Sangakkara called on SLC to root out its corrupt practices and recognise the huge role the sport now needs to play in promoting reconciliation at the end of a 30-year civil war. He voiced his concern at the direction in which cricket in Sri Lanka was heading, saying that “accountability and transparency in administration and credibility of conduct were lost in a mad power struggle that would leave Sri Lankan cricket with no consistent and clear administration.”The ICC has taken a strong stand against political interference in cricket administration at its recent annual conference, giving member boards two years to become democratised in a bid to improve governance. SLC is one of the boards most affected by the ICC decision as it effectively answers to the sports ministry, which recently dissolved the board’s interim committee and appointed a new panel.
