Michael Clarke delayed his entry to No.8 due to a painful back injury but he and Brad Haddin were able to save a limping New South Wales from a home defeat to Victoria. Clarke didn’t intend on batting unless the Blues were closing on victory, but at 6 for 162 he took a risk and didn’t come back until reaching the safety of stumps almost two hours later.Clarke scored 113 in the first innings but felt discomfort during the display and didn’t field for two sessions on Friday, mostly as a precaution ahead of the first Ashes Test on November 25. However, the injury seemed to get worse during his unbeaten 39, forcing him to crouch down and stretch in an effort to ease the pain.He has suffered regular disc problems throughout his career but this episode is particularly untimely with such an important series less than two weeks away. The injury also causes further issues for Australia’s selectors, as Clarke was the only member of the Test side’s top six with serious runs this week.New South Wales captain Stuart Clark suggested that, despite his obvious discomfort, Clarke’s injury was not as bad as it may have appeared. “His back’s nowhere near as bad as people probably want to think,” said Clark. “He’s probably sore from batting in the first innings. He batted for a long period after not getting many in India or batting that long.”It’s just stiffness from batting and being hunched over for long periods of time. He was always going to bat. It was just a matter of if we were two or three down it wouldn’t have been required. It got to the stage where he needed to bat so he went out there and did it. The physio will assess Michael over the next couple of days but at this stage I will assume he is playing [against Tasmania next week].”Haddin also spent some decent time in the middle to end up with 61 under tricky conditions, with the hosts finishing on 6 for 254. The pair was needed to salvage the situation after the big-name batting line-up failed to excel for the second time in the game. The chase of an unlikely 391 for victory was setback early when Shane Watson was lbw to John Hastings for 15. Usman Khawaja, who was caught behind off Peter Siddle on 42, Phillip Hughes (39) and Steven Smith (12) also gave up their final opportunities for big scores before Monday’s announcement of the Test squad.New South Wales’ situation became a major worry when Phil Jaques went for 31 and Nathan Hauritz was bowled by Siddle without scoring. Siddle’s 2 for 42 off 20 overs was a useful display but he has not gained the major haul needed to tell the selectors he is in top form after a back stress fracture. Jon Holland collected two wickets to have five for the game while Hastings and Andrew McDonald gained one each.Victoria added 33 runs in less than half an hour in the morning, with McDonald finishing on 107 and Clint McKay rushing to 32. McKay was stumped off Hauritz, giving him an encouraging 3 for 67 off 24 overs ahead of the England series.

Liverpool plotting swoop for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool could take one step closer to signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica during the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, €75m (equal to £62.9m) “now could not be enough” to secure the services of Uruguayan striker in the summer, although the journalist said that the player “will leave” the Lisbon club.

The Premier League side aren’t the only interested party in the 22-year-old, with Chelsea and Manchester United also in the running to secure the player’s signature.

Jurgen Klopp’s recruitment in the previous few seasons has been excellent and Nunez certainly has the potential to be fantastic, but will the price put Liverpool off?

Liverpool fans would love Nunez

The Reds are having a tremendous season so far as they chase an unprecedented quadruple, and Klopp is always trying to strengthen his squad, which shows that constant progression is always required.

The question is, do Liverpool need another forward when they have so many performing at their absolute best right now?

The fabled front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah have scored 61 goals between them this season in all competitions. Add in the goals from Diogo Jota and winter signing Luis Diaz and the squad is bulging at the seams with prolific forwards.

However, Nunez could be a solid replacement for Firmino, the oldest of Liverpool’s attackers as he turns 31 in October, and offer a greater attacking threat. The Uruguayan has notched 31 goals this term compared to just the 11 that the Brazilian has scored, so it’s not hard to see who is the more potent player.

There seems little doubt that Nunez has all the requirements to succeed in the Premier League, and with Klopp’s recent recruitment track record, going all-out for the Benfica striker may prove to be a wise move, certainly in the long run.

Liverpool supporters will surely be excited at seeing another of the European leagues’ top talents being linked with the club, with FSG seemingly looking to keep regenerating the squad when the time is right.

A warm-up for bigger things

preview of the Twenty20 between Australia and Sri Lanka in Perth

The Big PictureSri Lanka’s limited-overs team is peering towards the World Cup and Australia’s players are trying not to think about the Ashes starting next month. A Twenty20 and three one-dayers have been squeezed in to shine some light on the start of the Australian cricket season, but both outfits are concerned more about the bigger challenges on the horizon.

One-off matches provide little in the long term but each squad has a host of players trying to prove they are worthy of more international action. Michael Clarke’s performances in this format always come under scrutiny, with his vibrant leadership sitting next to overly cautious batting. If Australia’s version of the three Ws – Warner, Watson and White – fire it won’t matter too much what Clarke does with the bat.Sri Lanka are in some good form after two comfortable warm-ups, but the intensity will increase when they step out on the WACA on Sunday afternoon. Mahela Jayawardene and Suraj Randiv, the offspinner, performed well in their win over New South Wales on Wednesday while Kumar Sangakkara hit form with a century against Queensland in a one-dayer last week.Form guide (most recent first)

Watch out for…David Warner has had a strange month. Everyone knows he’s a T20 expert but he craves more and was rewarded with a trip to India for three ODIs. He didn’t play in any of them and when he returned home was dropped for the 50-over games against Sri Lanka. More quick runs are the only way to get back in.

Kumar Sangakkara juggles so many balls but is able to catch them all. As captain, wicketkeeper and senior batsman, it would be easy to be weighed down. Watch him in the field or at the crease and it soon becomes obvious that he is a master of everything. He and Jayawardene are the biggest threats for Australia.Team newsDirk Nannes is the veteran of the bowling attack with 14 Twenty20s for Australia, while Peter Siddle, Clint McKay and John Hastings are his possible support partners. Siddle is the only one of that trio with T20 experience, having appeared in one game. That is a relief for the local batsmen. Whether Sri Lanka pick Randiv as well will depend on the pitch, but they also have the options of using the part-time turn of Jeevan Mendis or Tillakaratne Dilshan. With 16 men in the squad, they have a lot to choose from.Sri Lanka squad Kumar Sangakkara (capt, wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Chamara Silva, Jeevan Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Chamara Kapugedara, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekera, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Suraj Randiv, Dammika Prasad, Dinesh Chandimal.Pitch and conditionsIt’s easy to think of Perth, speed and bounce together, but the combination hasn’t happened a lot lately.

O JOGO

Razzak and Shakib lead comfortable victory

Abdur Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan spun a web around Zimbabwe, and their batsmen ensured it didn’t unravel to level the five-match ODI series 1-1 in Mirpur

The Bulletin by Abhishek Purohit03-Dec-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAbdur Razzak took 5 for 30 as Bangladesh bowled Zimbabwe out for 191•Associated Press

The reliable and the not-so-reliable clicked together at the same time for Bangladesh. Abdur Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan spun a web around Zimbabwe, and their batsmen ensured it didn’t unravel to level the five-match ODI series 1-1 in Mirpur. The left-arm spin duo took nine wickets between them as Zimbabwe lurched to 191, after which the batsmen led by Raqibul Hasan – playing in place of Mohammad Ashraful – and Junaid Siddique took charge as Bangladesh breezed to a six-wicket victory. The spinners did what they have become increasingly adept at, putting the squeeze on Zimbabwe’s batsmen on a typically slow Mirpur surface that did not turn much, and Razzak finished them off with a late hat-trick. Except for a brief period when 57 runs came in eight overs during a seventh-wicket stand between Craig Ervine and Prosper Utseya, Zimbabwe struggled for direction. The Bangladesh batsmen then did what they failed to two days ago, making important, if not substantial contributions, in what proved to be a comfortable chase.Ervine and Utseya showed the way to stuttering top and middle-order batsmen, who had thrown away several starts to leave Zimbabwe on 132 for 6 in 37 overs. However, Razzak returned to remove Utseya with the last ball of the 45th over, and then trapped Ray Price and Chris Mpofu leg before with the first two deliveries of the 47th, ensuring Zimbabwe failed to bat out 50 overs. Ervine, playing with an urgency that had eluded the batsmen preceding him, was left stranded on 42.Ervine had given direction to an innings that was going nowhere, driving and working the spinners around with purpose. Meanwhile, Utseya targeted the vacant deep midwicket region, repeatedly swinging the left-arm spinners against the turn. At 189 for 6 with more than five overs to go, including four of the batting Powerplay, Zimbabwe were targeting a total in excess of 225, which could have proved difficult to chase. However, Razzak and Shakib orchestrated the late collapse, ensuring Bangladesh would chase under 200.Zimbabwe had struggled in the middle overs against the spinners, with Keith Dabengwa and Tatenda Taibu using 104 deliveries for a 48-run fourth-wicket stand. Both batsmen’s dismissals highlighted their frustration at being unable to score: Dabengwa spooned a full toss back to Shakib, while Taibu was given out lbw after missing an attempted reverse sweep for the umpteenth time. Four overs later, Elton Chigumbura swung wildly at Shakib and was bowled as Zimbabwe slid to 132 for 6.The start hadn’t been as bleak for Zimbabwe as Brendan Taylor and Regis Chakabva took them to 50 for 1 by the tenth over. However, the introduction of spin as early as the seventh over soon brought results and Taylor and Chakabva fell quickly.Bangladesh’s start mirrored Zimbabwe’s. Tamim started quickly when they came out to bat before lunch. Prosper Utseya opened for Zimbabwe with offspin, and was greeted with a six and a four over mid-off. At the other end, Chris Mpofu surprised Imrul Kayes with sharp bounce to induce an edge to Taibu. Mpofu could have had another one in the same over, but Elton Chigumbura dropped a sitter as Siddique hit airily to mid-off.Undeterred, Tamim glanced consecutive deliveries past short fine leg for boundaries. When Siddique too got going with a perfect back-foot punch through cover, it seemed Bangladesh had learned from the disaster chase two days ago. Old habits came back to haunt them, though, when Tamim holed out to Mpofu off Ray Price, after having hit the previous delivery for six.Bangladesh slowed down a touch after Tamim’s dismissal, with Price being miserly. But unlike the Bangladesh spinners, who had kept up the pressure from both ends, Utseya continued to leak runs. Siddique made Zimbabwe pay for the drop with his first half-century in eight innings and shared a 72-run partnership with Raqibul. Siddique had a brain fade soon after reaching his half-century, giving Price a blind charge, and Taibu did the rest. Raqibul took over, sweeping and cutting Price for three boundaries in an over. A six over deep midwicket off Utesya brought up his half-century before he became the third Bangladesh batsman to dance down and throw his wicket away, getting stumped off Dabengwa. But Bangladesh were almost home by then.

Wolves in talks with Neves over new deal

Wolves are trying to persuade Ruben Neves to sign a new deal at the club instead of leaving this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Neves’ future unclear

The 25-year-old has continued to be a key player for the Old Gold in the Premier League this season, having found his best form since the arrival of Bruno Lage and being hailed as ‘amazing’ by team-mate Jose Sa.

However, there is constant speculation surrounding Neves’ future at Molineux, with Barcelona continually linked with a summer move for the player, among other clubs.

Wolves would clearly love the midfielder to stay put, though, and a significant update has now emerged regarding the Portugal international’s situation in the Black Country.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-the-latest-from-wolves-4/” title=”All the latest from Wolves!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: O’Rourke on Neves’ future

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that a new deal is in the offing for Neves at Compton Park, as Wolves try to keep hold of arguably their most prized asset. The journalist outlined:

“I think Wolves are going to find it hard to keep hold of him this year. Talks are ongoing over a new deal, but I think there’s a realisation on both parties here that maybe the time has come for them to move on.

“I’m sure Ruben Neves in the summer will have a big decision to make on his future.”

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Verdict: Neves still likely to leave

While there is some hope that Neves will extend his stay at Wolves – and it would feel hugely significant if he does – it still feels as though a summer exit is more likely.

The lure of joining Barcelona could simply be too great to ignore, should an offer arrive, with few players getting the opportunity to play for such an iconic club.

Neves does seem to genuinely love Wolves, though, and if loyalty takes over and he sees positive progress under Lage, it may yet happen that he signs a new deal. If that does materialise, it would arguably feel more important than any new summer signing.

In other news, Wolves are eyeing up a move for one player. Find out who it is here.
