Malik the 'obvious' choice for captain – Lawson

Geoff Lawson believes Shoaib Malik should be the PCB’s choice to fill the Test captaincy role•AFP

Geoff Lawson, Pakistan’s former coach, believes Salman Butt’s appointment as captain of the Test side is premature and could do him more harm than good, and that Shoaib Malik should have been the “obvious choice” to replace Shahid Afridi, who retired from Tests after Pakistan’s 150-run loss in the first Test at Lord’s.”Butt’s a good choice as vice-captain but he’s years away from being a captain,” Lawson told . “I would’ve let him concentrate on his batting because he’s probably the best batsman they have right now. He has captaincy potential but throwing him in at this stage will crucify him.”Lawson took up the role of Pakistan’s coach after Bob Woolmer’s death at the 2007 World Cup and took the side to the finals of the inaugural World Twenty20 tournament, but was dismissed by the PCB a year and a half into his two-year contract after a string of poor performances.Shoaib Malik was captain during Lawson’s tenure but it was a troubled stint and he was replaced by Younis Khan after Pakistan conceded an ODI series to Sri Lanka with a massive 234-run thrashing in Lahore in January 2009.”It might’ve been premature to name him captain then. But three years on, he’s certainly capable of being captain again,” said Lawson. “To me, he’s the obvious choice. He’s well respected by the younger players and the seniors that had problems with him aren’t in the team.Malik briefly regained the captaincy for two Twenty20 games against England in Dubai in February this year after Afridi, the regular captain, was banned for two matches after being found guilty of ball-tampering during an ODI in Australia. Less than a month later, Malik was banned for a year during one of the PCB’s deepest culls of the senior cricket team in many years, during which seven of its top players were banned or fined after the side’s shambolic, winless tour of Australia. The ban was lifted on appeal two months later and he returned to the squad for the Asia Cup in June. Though Malik has denied an interest in the Pakistan captaincy, Lawson believes he has matured as a cricketer and his reappointment would be a progressive move by the PCB.”In 2007, he was a reluctant captain. He was young and wanted to concentrate on his cricket. Now he’s matured and given Pakistan’s penchant for changing captains regularly, I’d say you should give it to him and move forward.”Malik did a good job as captain and at that time he was learning how to lead a side. He was taking the right steps in the right direction and if he’s named as Afridi’s successor, I don’t think it’ll be a step backwards by the Pakistan Cricket Board.”

Tuskers part ways with Ebrahim, Vermeulen

Matabeleland Tuskers have dropped batsmen Mark Vermeulen and Dion Ebrahim from their set-up during Zimbabwe’s off-season.

Cricinfo staff08-Jul-2010Matabeleland Tuskers have dropped batsmen Mark Vermeulen and Dion Ebrahim from their set-up during Zimbabwe’s off-season.”Dion Ebrahim and Mark Vermeulen do not fit into our plans for next season, they still wanted to play for us but we did not have them in our plans,” Stanley Staddon, Tuskers’ chief executive told a local newspaper. “We have informed the two players when there is still time for them to find new employers before the start of the season.”Ebrahim, who is currently playing club cricket in England, was Tuskers’ leading runscorer in the Logan Cup last season, with 746 runs at 46.62, but now finds himself without a franchise. Vermeulen’s season was more patchy, however, and issues over his discipline and behaviour also resurfaced. It was also reported that Tuskers, who are looking to reverse their fortunes after disappointing results in all three formats last season, are hoping to sign Warwickshire allrounder Neil Carter for Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 competition. They will also have a new coach, with Dave Houghton taking over from Robin Brown.

Newcastle handed Jamaal Lascelles boost

A late relief has been handed to Newcastle United over defender Jamaal Lascelles…

What’s the latest?

Injury analyst Ben Dinnery has relayed the latest team news from Eddie Howe’s pre-match press conference, with it being revealed that the centre-back is now available to face West Ham this afternoon.

He missed out on the 1-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend through illness and is now back in contention to make the starting XI against the Hammers.

Delight

This update will delight Howe, as Lascelles’ availability is a major boost for multiple reasons.

Firstly, the manager will be buzzing to have his captain back in the fold. The 28-year-old’s leadership skills could provide a big lift in the dressing room, even if he is not selected in the XI. He is the club captain for a reason and having his voice in the warm-up, before the match and at half-time could be vital for Howe as he potentially looks to give his team a boost if the performance is not up to standards.

Secondly, the head coach will be pleased to see him available after his excellent performance against Everton. He was desperately unlucky to concede an own goal and barely set a foot wrong for the rest of the match. As per SofaScore, he won nine of his 11 aerial battles and made five clearances, one block and an impressive five interceptions throughout the match.

This shows that he dominated the opposition physically whilst also reading the game brilliantly to cut out Everton attacks. It was a solid defensive display and one which Howe could be keen for the ex-Forest defender to build upon against West Ham and in upcoming matches in Newcastle’s bid to avoid relegation to the Championship at the end of the campaign.

Finally, the 28-year-old’s return offers the flexibility to change the formation to a back three. With Kieran Trippier and Javier Manquillo both suffering knocks against Villa, the Magpies could look to deploy a wing-back system in order to compensate for the loss of their two first-choice right-backs.

Lascelles could come in at centre-back alongside Dan Burn and Fabian Schar, which would then offer the protection required to play Jacob Murphy or Ryan Fraser at wing-back. The attack-minded wingers could be exposed defensively in a back four, but their skipper’s return could allow Howe to make the change in formation to fit them in.

West Brom: Grant had a shocker vs Boro

Steve Bruce’s West Bromwich Albion side once again failed to record their first win under the management of the 61-year-old head coach on Tuesday night, with Middlesbrough running out 2-1 victors at the Riverside Stadium.

The result comes as a huge blow to the Baggies’ play-off hopes, with Albion remaining down in 11th place in the Championship standings, now six points behind Tuesday’s opposition – who occupy sixth.

In terms of the performance, there was a slight improvement from the 2-0 loss to Luton Town last weekend, namely as West Brom did manage to end their five-game run of failing to find the back of the net, however, the overall display was certainly not one of a side who look as if they will mount a promotion push over the remainder of the season.

Indeed, left-back Conor Townsend endured a torrid evening up against the Boro right wing-back Isaiah Jones, Adam Reach was extremely sloppy in possession in the middle of the park and Karlan Grant was anonymous on the left of the Baggies front three.

However, it will undoubtedly be the latter of this trio most disappointed with his performance at Riverside, as the 24-year-old was once again unable to drag himself out of an extremely poor run of form that has now lasted six games.

Lost the ball every 2.9 touches

Despite having returned to a more familiar role on the left of a three-man attack against Boro – a position from which the forward has bagged all of his ten Championship goals this season – Grant struggled to make any real impact on the game whatsoever on Tuesday night.

Indeed, over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch, the £7.2m-rated forward enjoyed just 29 touches of the ball – the lowest of any Albion player who started the match, including Sam Johnstone – completed a mere 12 of his 17 attempted passes, failed to hit the target with either of his two shots at the Boro goal and was beaten by an opponent once.

The £20k-per-week centre-forward – who Joseph Masi dubbed “shocking” against Luton last time out – also lost six of his nine duels, committed one foul and ceded possession of the ball on ten separate occasions – meaning he lost the ball with every 2.9 touches.

These returns, rather unsurprisingly, saw the 24-year-old receive an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.2, while Birmingham Live’s Joseph Chapman awarded the striker a three in his own player ratings, as well as stating of Grant’s display:

“Pretty non-existent again. The club’s top scorer has seen his goals dry up, but he’s not been without his half chances recently. Here, he had practically no bearing on Albion’s attacking play and should’ve done much better when he did have those small openings.”

As such, with the Baggies appearing to struggle just as much under the management of Bruce as they did under the leadership of Valerien Ismael, the fact that the club’s top scorer this season now seems incapable of hitting a barn door with a banjo is certainly costing the 61-year-old dearly.

Hair blames politics for Oval row

Darrell Hair, the umpire at the centre of the controversy that led to the abandonment of the 2006 Oval Test between England and Pakistan, has claimed that meddling board officials were to blame for the escalation of the row

Darrell Hair, the umpire at the centre of the controversy that led to the abandonment of the 2006 Oval Test between England and Pakistan, has claimed that meddling board officials were to blame for the escalation of the row, and that the Pakistan team themselves had been ready to accept his decision to dock them five penalty runs for ball-tampering.Speaking in an interview on BBC Test Match Special, Hair recounted the events of that dramatic fourth day, which ended up with the match being awarded to England following Pakistan’s refusal to return to the field following the tea interval. A lengthy stand-off ensued, with Hair and Pakistan’s captain Inzamam-ul-Haq proving especially intransigent in the negotiations that followed, and it wasn’t until 10.30pm that night, some six hours after the last ball had been bowled, that the game was finally declared to be over.Four years later, however, and with the two teams back at The Oval once again, Hair insisted that his penalty award had not initially been a bone of contention. “We played on until tea [so] I suppose you could say by playing on [the players] accepted what happened,” he said. “It wasn’t until they got back into the dressing room that politics got involved. Too many people got involved from Pakistan and from the ECB as well.”I’m not about to name the persons involved – I will in my book – but there is no doubt they got themselves involved when they shouldn’t have, and that further inflamed the situation. The PCB thought they had some allies who would assist them. The Pakistan team accepted the ruling until they got back in the dressing room.”The general assumption around the time of the controversy was that Hair had acted alone in declaring the ball unfit for further use, and that his partner Billy Doctrove – with whom he claimed he no longer has contact – was swept along in the furore without really having a say. Hair, however, denied this vehemently, saying: “He played an equal part. I’d like to see any tape of me frogmarching Billy around.”There was no coercion and those things can’t happen unless both umpires agree. I’m an easy target because strength of character can be mistaken for arrogance or obstinacy. But if Billy had said, ‘I don’t think the condition of the ball had changed’, we would have carried on.”As a result of the furore, Hair spent two years in the international wilderness, before returning to the ICC’s elite panel for two matches of New Zealand’s tour of England in 2008. He claimed, however, that he no longer felt any bitterness at his treatment, even though he his employers chose to make public a series of emails between himself and the umpires manager, Doug Cowie, in which he appeared to demand a lump sum of money in order to go quietly and spare the ICC any further embarrassment.”I got over it many years ago,” he said. “There are a couple of people who worked for the ICC who lied and I don’t have much time for them, but I got back to doing what I wanted to do and I finished umpiring a Test match at Trent Bridge. For me that was the perfect ending. I knew exactly what had happened at the time and I did my job to the best of my ability.”
