Adam Lyth aims to join elite group

No one was more disappointed about a washout at Headingley than Yorkshire batsman Adam Lyth, who can see the chance to join a highly exclusive group of cricketers slipping through his grasp

Heavy rain could not dampen the noisy enthusiasm of rugby league fans on the other side of the football stand here as Leeds Rhinos pulled off a last-gasp win over Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup quarter-final, but there was only frustration for Yorkshire and Lancashire as day one of the 250th Roses match was a total washout, without a ball bowled. No one was more disappointed than Yorkshire batsman Adam Lyth, who can see the chance to join a highly exclusive group of cricketers slipping through his grasp. The 22-year-old left-hander began the first of the season’s meetings with Lancashire needing only 147 to have scored 1,000 first-class runs by the end of May, which would place his name alongside those of W.G. Grace, Walter Hammond, Don Bradman, Tom Hayward, Charlie Hallows, Bill Edrich, Glenn Turner and Graeme Hick among those to have achieved the feat.Hick was the last, in 1988, and no English-born player has been added to the group since Edrich in 1938. Lyth, from Whitby, would be the first Yorkshireman.”A few people have told me that Graeme Hick was the last to do it for 20-odd years,” Lyth said. “Hopefully I can get over the line but if I don’t in this game it won’t be the end of the world. I’d like to get to 1,000, which is something every batsman wants to do, but there are eight more games after this one.”Lyth’s strokeplaying talents have been known to Yorkshire for some years, although they have taken a while to flourish since his senior debut in 2006. Last season, after former England captain Michael Vaughan returned to the county ranks and Jonathan Bairstow suddenly made a compelling case for a first-team place, he was in and out of the side, his progress seemingly stalling. But this season, promoted to opener after batting at four last year, he has suddenly come into his own, catching the eye with a fine run of scores, culminating in 142 and 93 against Somerset, followed by 133 and 98 against Hampshire last week, when he was denied a second hundred in the match only when Neil McKenzie took a brilliant slip catch.Being told he is the man to open the innings alongside Joe Sayers has clearly done wonders for his confidence. “Andrew Gale [Yorkshire’s new captain] told me on pre-season tour in Barbados that he wanted to open with me and that Jacques [Rudolph] would bat at four, with Mags [Anthony McGrath] at three and Andrew himself at five.”It was tough last season to be out of the side, although obviously with Vaughny coming back someone had to give way. But this has given me a massive confidence booster in my game and that’s shown in the first seven Championship games.”I can’t put my form down to doing anything very different. I have just been leaving the ball well and trusting my natural instinct, to be honest. I have got all the shots. It is just that a couple of years ago I might have gone at a few early doors and got a nick. I now know how to leave the ball and cash in on width or flick off the legs when the ball comes straight.”Talking to a few experienced players like Rudolph and McGrath, they said leaving well was the key. Let the bowlers come to you rather than go at the ball,” he added. “Two years ago I would get pretty 30s or 40s and then somehow nick off. Or I would get to 80 and play a rash shot.”But this year, touch wood, it’s not so much the rash shot, it is a good ball or an amazing catch. It has not really been my own doing as such. Hopefully I have got a bit of luck with me. When I have nicked one it has gone over the fielder’s head or dropped short.”The current Yorkshire group have become a draw for England’s selectors and Lyth’s form has been noted. Lyth is a former England Under-19 and was selected in an ECB Performance Squad last winter, yet he is keeping thoughts of further progress in international cricket at the back of his mind.”I’m not getting too carried away with myself at the moment,” he said. “I just want to keep scoring runs for Yorkshire. Then, you just never know, things might happen. If I keep scoring runs things will take care of themselves.”

Wolves not in for Ramsey transfer

Wolves and every other Premier League club only have hours left to conduct any late business before the 2022 January transfer window closes.

However, it seems as though Wolves fans can forget about seeing their club sign one player in particular that has been mentioned with a move to Molineux in the past few weeks that will be a very familiar face to a lot of Premier League followers.

What’s the news?

In a recent post on BBC Sport’s deadline day live update tracker, journalist Simon Stone had this to say on Wolves’ reported interest in signing Juventus and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

He said: “There have been rumours of a Wolves move for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey has been frozen out in Italy and is open to returning to the Premier League. But I have been told Wolves are not one of the clubs expressing an interest.”

Having racked up 371 appearances for Arsenal in which he managed to score 65 goals and provide 65 assists, the 31-year-old joined Juventus in the 2019 summer transfer window.

Since then, the midfielder has made 70 appearances for the Serie A side with six goals and six assists under his belt but has now found himself apparently looking for a new club with Juventus aiming to move him on.

Fans will be gutted

Taking into account the amount of experience the Welshman has in terms of playing in the Premier League and the Champions League as well as winning trophies throughout his career, there will be some Wolves fans out there that will be gutted to hear that their club aren’t looking to bring the midfielder back to England.

After all, this is someone who would not only improve their depth in the centre of the pitch, but add a considerable amount of quality too. He has 40 goals and 51 assists during his Premier League career, suggesting he’d be a big signing for Lage and co.

However, with Wolves having the unflappable midfield duo of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in their squad as well as having Leander Dendoncker and Luke Cundle as backup options, there is an argument to suggest that this isn’t the worst news in the world.

With that in mind, the club may be better off looking at other options if they do want to bring a new player in before the deadline.

Rodrigo was an unsung hero vs Villa

Leeds United took a share of the spoils in a six-goal thriller as they nabbed a point against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

The two sides put on a hugely thrilling and fast-paced encounter, which at one stage looked as if the home side were going to run away with it, having gone into the break 3-2 up.

But Daniel James, leading the line in Patrick Bamford’s absence, spearheaded a solid comeback in the second half.

The Welshman hit the bar soon after his opener before heading home a second seconds before half-time. Diego Llorente fired in the all-important leveller after the Villa defence fluffed a clearance from a corner.

He was one of three players from both sides to be in the running for the ‘Man of the Match’ award but there was an unsung hero from Marcelo Bielsa’s side that deserves plenty of plaudits.

It was arguably the best performance we’ve ever seen from Rodrigo in a Leeds shirt – something that LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross seems to agree with.

‘One of the best displays we have seen from the Spain international in some time.

‘For Leeds to score three away from home without any discernible impact from Raphinha means someone else had to step up. Rodrigo mitigated his friend’s anonymity and proved to be all-action.

He popped up everywhere as an option and then laid on killer passes across the pitch. Never stopped hassling and harrying the Villa defence,’ he wrote.

Indeed, the Spaniard provided a whopping five key passes, which was the most for either side and even usurped that of Barcelona loanee Philippe Coutinho, who left much of the crowd purring at Villa Park.

This creative display was supplemented with plenty of fight as he also recorded two interceptions and he won 50% of his ground duels, too, as per SofaScore.

The only thing missing really was the goal and had that happened, then he would’ve undoubtedly been in the frame for that MOTM award, alongside James.

LUFCData described the outing as an “excellent display” and it certainly was that.

The £13.5m-rated playmaker really stepped up on a night where Bielsa’s usual standout star, Raphinha, underwhelmed and as such, he deserves his fair share of plaudits.

– Eu tinha destaque, sim, no futsal.

Graças a Deus deu certo.

McCullum gives up keeping in Tests

Brendon McCullum has announced that he will give up keeping wicket for New Zealand in Tests alone, in order to prolong his international career

Brendon McCullum has announced that he will give up keeping wicket for New Zealand in Tests alone, in order to prolong his international career. McCullum had earlier toyed with the idea of hanging up the gloves in limited-overs cricket and playing as a specialist batsman, but realised the best way forward was to sacrifice his dual role in the game’s longest format.McCullum, who will continue to keep in one-dayers and Twenty20s, said he consulted experts before making his decision. “I have talked to a lot of people about how they went about extending their international careers, including some prominent former and current wicketkeepers,” McCullum said. “I am passionate about playing for the Blackcaps (New Zealand) and by limiting my keeping to the shorter forms of the game it increases my chances of prolonging my career.”Geoff Allott, former fast bowler and now general manager of cricket in the New Zealand board, said it was a positive step for the long run.”Brendon enjoys the challenge of Test cricket and has been a strong performer for New Zealand as a keeper over a significant period of time,” Allott said. “While his glove work will be missed, we understand and support his decision to focus his attention on scoring runs at Test level, and his objective to play on the international cricket stage for as long as possible. It is great to know he will continue to keep wickets in limited-overs cricket.”We need to work with players such as Brendon to ensure they stay fit and available for selection, with particular attention paid to those with heavy playing schedules.”Mark Greatbatch, the chairman of selectors, said the committee had no problems with McCullum’s decision, and added that only his form as a batsman will be considered for future Test selections.”Brendon has stated he wants to play cricket for New Zealand for as long as possible and that is really encouraging. I know he has had trouble with injuries that are related to keeping, and therefore understand his decision to stop keeping in Test cricket,” Greatbatch said. “But Brendon clearly understands he will only be considered as a Test batsman on his long-form batting performances.”McCullum has been a destructive opener in limited-overs games. In the last two years, he has scored two centuries and five fifties in one-dayers but his returns in T20s are relatively better, with one century and six fifties. New Zealand’s top order has struggled for consistency in all formats, and McCullum intended to focus on adding more stability to it. He too struggled to maintain his consistency in Tests as a batsman, but he remained New Zealand’s first-choice wicketkeeper. With the latest development, Gareth Hopkins could fill the keeper’s slot in Tests.

Rangers must unleash Glen Kamara v Dortmund

Rangers return to European action on Thursday as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks to guide the Ibrox giants into the next round of the UEFA Europa League.

The Gers travel to Germany to face off against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their knockout clash.

Van Bronckhorst’s side come into the match off the back of a 3-0 win over Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup last weekend and the Dutchman could make a number of changes from that side.

One player he must unleash from the start against Dortmund after leaving him on the bench against Annan is central midfielder Glen Kamara.

The midfield machine must be brought back into the XI as he is a pivotal player for the Gers and could be key to them picking anything up from the German giants.

He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.03 across 24 Premiership matches this season, showing that he has been consistently delivering quality performances. This means that he has been a reliable option in the middle of the park for van Bronckhorst, which is one of the reasons why he should be in from the start.

Neil McCann, his former manager at Dundee United, once heaped praise on the enforcer. He said of Kamara: “He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect.

“He’s a special talent. He’s lightning-quick but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

These comments highlight the physical aspect of his game and emphasise the impact he can have off and on the ball for Rangers, in terms of winning the ball back off the opposition and retaining the ball himself.

The Finland international has the assurance in possession to allow him to compete at the top level. He is able to quickly and effectively recycle the ball and this will be crucial against Dortmund if they decide to press high and look to win the ball off Rangers in their own half, as he will be able to beat the press and progress the play.

In the Premiership this season, the machine has completed a whopping 91% of his attempted passes. This proves that he is an excellent passer who does not give away possession away cheaply, which could be key against such an esteemed European outfit in their own stadium. His 1.3 key passes per game also shows that he does not have a high completion rate due to an unimaginative pass selection, as he regularly creates chances for his teammates.
