Celtic: Abada, Moffat and Rogic struggle

Celtic failed to follow up their League Cup triumph on the weekend after being held to a surprise 0-0 draw with St. Mirren on Wednesday evening.

The Hoops were once again without star striker Kyogo Furuhashi and failed to make the breakthrough in Paisley, despite having 30 shots and 83% possession.

Here at The Transfer Tavern, we look into the three worst-rated Celtic players as per statistical specialists SofaScore, with players required to feature for at least 45 minutes for ranking.

Tom Rogic – 6.7/10

Rogic was part of a three-man midfield alongside Callum McGregor and Nir Bitton but struggled with his end product.

The Aussie made just one key pass all evening, lost four of his six duels and gave possession away on 13 occasions.

He had six shots blocked, didn’t register one on target and also failed to manage a successful cross or long ball. A frustrating night for the midfield regular.

Owen Moffat – 6.7/10

Moffat was handed a first league start by Ange Postecoglou but also ended with a fairly low score of 6.7/10.

He played just over an hour before making way for Josip Juranovic, and in that time, lost the ball 12 times, completed no crosses and didn’t make a key pass. The youngster also didn’t have a shot on target and lost half of his six duels.

Liel Abada – 6.8/10

Abada is the final Celtic starter to record a score of under 7/10 on Wednesday evening.

Occupying a central role once again, he also didn’t register a shot on target, with one off target. He was unsuccessful in five of his six crosses and lost the ball a whopping 19 times.

Abada also lost four of his five duels, making it a night to forget for the Hoops in an attacking sense.

Tim Spiers gives key Wolves-Chelsea update

Wolves’ Premier League clash with Chelsea this weekend is still going ahead ‘as things stand’, according to reliable journalist Tim Spiers, but it’s ‘definitely not nailed on’.

The Lowdown: Wolves take on Chelsea

Wanderers picked up an important 1-0 victory away to Brighton in midweek, with Romain Saiss’ goal earning them all three points.

Next up for Wolves is Sunday’s visit of Chelsea, with the Blues’ form dropping in recent weeks, having looked like title favourites at one point.

It is a chance for Bruno Lage’s side to record a significant victory, as they look to show they can finish in the European places season.

The latest: Spiers gives key update

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Spiers said Sunday’s game is still going ahead currently, but warned the fixture is not set in stone due to the issues within the Blues’ squad:

“Nope definitely not nailed on, as things stand Wolves are fine but Chelsea have a number of cases so it depends how bad their situation is today/tomorrow.”

Spiers’ update went under the radar somewhat – just one of his nearly 60,000 followers saw and liked the tweet.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375704”]

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

The weekend clash is an exciting one on paper and a chance for Wolves to clinch a huge scalp, so the hope is of course that it still goes ahead.

Lage’s men are arguably facing Chelsea at an ideal time, with Thomas Tuchel’s side only winning two of their last five Premier League games, while they will want to avoid a fixture pile-up further down the line.

That being said, it is still a huge challenge for Wolves, who will be desperate to go one better and improve on their narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool and Manchester City.

Bumped and bruised Australia finish in comfort

Australia’s summer of batting near misses and bouts of pain continued, but they won’t be too bothered after reaching 3 for 339

The Bulletin by Peter English16-Dec-2009Australia 3 for 339 (Katich 99, Watson 89, Hussey 81*) v West Indies
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Australia’s summer of batting near misses and bouts of pain continued, but they won’t be too bothered after staying well ahead of West Indies on the opening day of the final Test. While Ricky Ponting was forced to retire hurt with a throbbing left elbow and Simon Katich and Shane Watson left agonisingly close to deserved centuries, the hosts quickly forgot about their below-par performance in Adelaide and were on track for a series win after posting a formidable 3 for 339.Ponting’s elbow was the greatest concern for the hosts after he walked off on 23, but he was cleared by x-rays and will bat when required. The damage for West Indies, who could not provide lasting support for Kemar Roach, could stay a bit longer on a pitch that looked fun for batting – except when Roach was operating.Roach woke the tourists from their morning slumber during a five-over burst from the Lillee-Marsh End in the middle session, forcing Ponting’s retirement and removing Watson for 89. Strangely, he was not given the ball again until the second new ball was taken and was allowed an over into the wind before being replaced. He walked off with 1 for 67 in 13 overs, figures which don’t reveal the damage he caused. In between Roach’s spells the spinners strangled Katich and Michael Clarke, giving some justification to the strange method of employing them both straight after tea. Katich was the most unfortunate, finding square leg with his sweep of Sulieman Benn to register his second 99 in Tests. He left without emotion but it was a wasted opportunity that maintained Australia’s record of not owning a century in the three-match series. At least Watson didn’t briefly lose his mind, with Roach’s sharp ball going away and brushing his edge on 89, but it didn’t ease the pain of missing a maiden hundred, just as he did after reaching 96 in Adelaide last week. The day began with a 132-run stand between Watson and Katich, a partnership which was so comfortable it seemed like they would be unhappy if they didn’t reach 600. By stumps, on a pitch missing the traditional steepling bounce, Hussey had taken them to comfort with a bright 81.Smart stats

Simon Katich fell on 99 for the second time in his Test career, joining seven other batsmen who’ve suffered this fate. The only other Australian in the group is Greg Blewett.

Australia lead quite comfortably in terms of batsmen who’ve been dismissed for 99 – it’s happened to them 22 times, nine more than England, who are in second place.

Michael Hussey’s half-century is the 13th for Australia in this series, but no batsman has managed a hundred yet. West Indies have seven 50-plus scores, of which three have been converted into hundreds.

In seven innings, Katich and Shane Watson have added 644 runs for the first wicket at an average of 71.55, with two century stands.

Ponting headed for hospital shortly before tea after being shaken by the spell of Roach, who had picked up the captain twice in the series. Life was immediately uncomfortable for Ponting, who ducked and turned his head in response to a 146kph short ball that arrived as his second delivery. His arm remained high to take the impact and following a delay for treatment he was breathing deeply again when hit in the stomach jumping back to Roach. Ponting is now 34 and was noticeably slow at the start, although Roach had some inspiration after the captain said in the lead-up to the match that the extra speed did not worry him.The injury continued to bother Ponting for the next 36 minutes and he managed to ignore the pain briefly to pull Roach for six, not worrying about the two men on the boundary. However, he was grimacing again following a pull off Dwayne Bravo and went off to give Hussey a chance to secure his spot.On his home ground, Hussey produced his most authoritative innings of the series, pulling powerfully on occasions and working the ball cleverly. His innings peaked with three fours in Roach’s opening over with the second new ball and he will be desperate to reach three figures on the second morning when he resumes with Marcus North (23).Katich held everything together during his considered display, giving the strike to Watson as the allrounder entertained with pulls, cuts and crisp drives during his 15 boundaries. After surviving a drop from Chris Gayle at first slip on 7, Watson moved freely throughout and a pull and an on-drive took him to 89, but he slipped against Roach and walked off without a lengthy bat raise. For most of the morning Katich was content to complement Watson and had scored 4 by the time his partner was 27. He was the ideal support for Watson and then Ponting, attempting to help his leader through the discomfort. There were brief bursts, with a couple of boundaries in overs from Bravo and Gavin Tonge, but he lost focus at the wrong moment. Clarke followed with a rash shot on 11 to hand Narsingh Deonarine a reward for his casual offspin.Deonarine and Travis Dowlin had come in for the injured Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Adrian Barath, leaving West Indies to hope for a small first-innings target in their push to level the series. Tonge was called in for his debut, replacing Darren Sammy, and he found it difficult to offer Roach any long-term help. Tonge went for five an over and Ravi Rampaul and Bravo created few moments of fear for the hosts. The spinners combined for 37 overs and reduced the run-rate after tea, but the visitors will have to create more chances, rather than waiting for things to happen, if they are to challenge over the final four days. At the moment Roach is the only real danger to Ponting and his men. As the captain re-discovered, his threat is serious.

É normal do torcedor.

Liverpool fans fume at David Lynch claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after journalist David Lynch claimed that the Reds won’t sign anyone in the January transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s side drew 2-2 away to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon as a memorable Premier League encounter played out at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool blew a two-goal lead in west London, and while the result was still far from terrible, more valuable ground was lost to Manchester City in the title race.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will now all depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially heightening the need for new signings to be made.

That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, with Lynch telling Anfield Watch [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] that the Reds are ‘pretty adamant’  that signings won’t be made this month.

Aziz and Qadir help Pakistan draw level

An unbeaten 82 by Rameez Aziz helped Pakistan to a six-wicket win and level the series with one game to play in Blenheim

Cricinfo staff05-Jan-2010
ScorecardAn unbeaten 82 by Rameez Aziz helped Pakistan to a six-wicket win and levelled the series with one game to play in Blenheim. Set a modest target of 208, Pakistan got off to a shaky start, losing three early wickets, before two half-century stands – both involving Aziz – guided them home.New Zealand will be disappointed they didn’t go on to score a lot more after the start they got. Thomas Latham, son of former New Zealand player Rod, was in sight of a half-century but his dismissal sparked a collapse. New Zealand were 91 for 2 in the 18th over at that stage but they suddenly lost six wickets for 40 runs. Usman Qadir took three middle-order wickets to orchestrate that collapse. However, Jonathan Hickey and Dane Cleaver hit 30s in a 70-run stand to push the score past 200.Pakistan were in early trouble at 35 for 3 against the New Zealand seamers, led by Doug Bracewell. Ghumman and Aziz added 97 to pull the match back in Pakistan’s favour. After Ghumman fell for 41, Hammad Azam joined Aziz in a stand of 79 to finish the game. The teams will play the deciding game on Thursday, as part of the warm-up for the Under-19 World Cup.
