Graeme Smith does not believe South Africa’s No. 1 ranking in one-day cricket has added any unnecessary pressure on the team as they prepare to kick-off the ICC Champions Trophy at home

South Africa are hosting a big tournament, they are without a doubt the best side in the world at the moment and if this Champions Trophy is more open than recent ones, then they must be seen to be more equal than the others. Will they win this tournament? Except of course for that thing that isn’ttalked about anymore; that just hangs around, like the bad smell of an elephant, in the room.We can all go blue in the face defining what exactly constitutes that which must not be said, but the only truth is that South Africa often go into big events looking a million dollars only to not win them. Until they do triumph at one of these prestige tournaments, that which will not betalked about, might not be talked about openly, but it will continue to hover around, in people’s minds, in their whispers, on the tips of their tongues and in the air.Kumar Sangakkara did his bit, floating a subtle bait out earlier, claiming that only one team will be under pressure. No one bit, least of all Graeme Smith. “It’s a natural thing for Kumar to say,” he said. “Passing the buck is a very good thing as an international captain these days,” before swiftly passing it back with the observation that Sri Lanka’s own record at these glittering multi-nation events was handy.None of this is to take from South Africa’s work over the last few years, for it has been immense. They are not the top dog in two formats by accident. Smith himself has been instrumental, pulling off the devilishly tricky feat of going from boy to man in the public eye. He has mellowedand to only look at him on the field, or hear him speak, you could well believe that the thing we don’t speak of actually isn’t such a big issue with him. But for a man so driven by ambition how can it possibly not be?All the tools are in place under him. Even Herschelle Gibbs’ absence from tomorrow’s game – and possibly Thursday’s – may be overcome if Hashim Amla, who will partner Smith, can replicate his Test successes. The middle order is fat with the potential of runs, and delightful runs if AB de Villiers and JP Duminy get their beat going.And in a tournament of fine bowling attacks – one of the aspects to really savour here – theirs is finer still. They have the pace, the left-arm angle, all-rounders, and, in Johan Botha and Roelof van der Merwe, a spinning combination made for limited-overs cricket. “Over the last yearand a half, Botha has become one of the best ODI bowlers,” Smith said. “He’s become an integral part of this format and it will be no different here tomorrow. He knows the ground well and has played a lot of cricket here. With Roelof, he forms a good combo.” All bases, as Smith added, are indeed covered.There are, however, a couple of niggling unknowns. The opener will be South Africa’s first international game in five months, exactly the kind of non-preparation that often puts all the best preparation to ruin. This is not the kind of tournament which affords a slip. It is a concern, for Smith referred to it unprompted. “This is our first challenge in two-three months, so we walk straight in after that to a big day, big game, big tournament,” he said. International day-night games, as Smith also pointed out, are rare in Centurion this time of the year and noone knows what that might bring to bear, even if “the pitches are generally good here.”South Africa are not quite cricket’s Dinara Safina, the top-ranked female tennis player, who hasn’t yet won a Slam. They have won many of cricket’s unofficial slams over the last two years, winning in the subcontinent, England and Australia. When Smith speaks of trophies in thecabinet, he isn’t entirely wrong. “These are things we have worked for. Two to three years ago we started a plan and we wanted to be number one in both forms of the game, and we are the only team bar Australia to achieve it. For us to have those trophies in the cabinet is a credit tohow we play the game, how we’ve been successful around the world.”But until he puts the trophies that come with the Champions Trophy, the World Cup or the World Twenty20, he isn’t quite right either.

Graeme Smith, South Africa’s captain, will lead Cape Cobras in next month’s Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India. Two other top South African batsmen, Herschelle Gibbs and JP Duminy, are also part of the 15-man squad announced on Monday.Fast bowler Charl Langeveldt and offspinner Claude Henderson, who were key bowlers in Cobras’ Standard Bank Pro20 victory earlier in the year, will be assisted by quick bowler Monde Zondeki. Any hopes Crystal Palace had of signing midfielder Conor Gallagher on a permanent basis have taken a significant blow after it was revealed the loanee is planning on returning to parent club Chelsea at the end of the season.

What’s the story?

That’s according to former Blues midfielder Steve Sidwell, who claimed that the highly-rated 21-year-old is determined to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge next term.

“I remember Rio (Ferdinand) telling me he did an interview with him (Gallagher) not long ago,” Sidwell told the Daily Express.

“And he said to Rio: ‘When you speak about me, make sure that I state that I want to go back to Chelsea. I’m not here in the shop window to get a move. I’m doing this to show them what I can do to go back to Chelsea.’”

Parick Vieira will be gutted

Although Sidwell’s revelation regarding Gallagher’s long-term career plans may not come as a huge surprise to Patrick Vieira, the Palace manager is still likely to be gutted at what will potentially be a huge blow.

That’s because the box-to-box dynamo has been in imperious form for the Eagles in the opening weeks of the campaign, bagging four goals and providing a further three assists in just 11 Premier League appearances, prompting Ashley Cole to label him a “leader.”

His outstanding displays at club level also caught the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate, who rewarded Gallagher with his senior international debut when he came on at halftime in the 10-0 thrashing of San Marino last week.

However, the south London outfit look set to be without his services next term as the £13.5m-rated gem sets his sights on breaking into Chelsea’s first-team setup.

Thomas Tuchel can currently call upon the likes of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic to pull the strings in his engine room, but with fringe stars Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek linked with moves away, Gallagher could get his opportunity.

It remains to be seen if Tuchel can find space in his plans for Gallagher, but for now, Palace should just enjoy having such a talented player at their disposal for the rest of the campaign.

Nesta entrevista ao LANCE!, Dudu relembrou seus feitos pelo Verdão e contou que ainda vê chance de acabar o ano como bicampeão. Prestes a atingir os 150 jogos justamente diante do rival em que mais fez gols (três), o capitão conta o que falta para tornar-se um dos camisa 7 históricos do clube, como Edmundo e Paulo Nunes.

LANCE!: Neste sábado, você completa 150 jogos pelo Palmeiras. O que significa esta marca?
Dudu: Cara, é um orgulho. 150 jogos com a camisa do Palmeiras é uma marca grande. É importante para a minha carreira fazer 150 jogos em um grande clube, algo difícil. A gente sabe como é a concorrência aqui, mas espero completar 200, 250 jogos aqui com a camisa do Palmeiras.

Você chegou em um processo de reformulação, com muita expectativa, e hoje é capitão e um dos jogadores mais queridos pela torcida. Consegue resumir o que viveu nestes quase três anos?
Acho que estou correspondendo à expectativa criada em torno de mim quando cheguei. Eu poderia ter ido para dois rivais, acabei vindo ao Palmeiras, fiquei muito feliz. Como eu falo, foi a escolha mais certa até hoje da minha vida. Espero completar 150, 200, 250 jogos, dando alegria para a torcida palmeirense e fazendo o que mais gosto, que é jogar futebol.

Qual a sua melhor lembrança?
Meus gols contra o Santos na (final da) Copa do Brasil, né? O gol contra o Botafogo que foi praticamente o gol do título (brasileiro), que encaminhou muito bem nosso título. Fiz grandes jogos aqui no nosso estádio, é isso, acho. Tenho feito coisas boas no Palmeiras, o momento que levantei a taça do Brasileiro, também, depois de 22 anos sem ganhar o título. Fico muito feliz por estes anos que tenho aqui no Palmeiras.

Quais são seus planos de carreira? Imagino que você, com 25 anos, ainda pense em voltar à Europa?
Estou muito feliz aqui no Palmeiras, feliz pelo que estou passando aqui. Tenho no mínimo mais dois, três anos de contrato com o Palmeiras. Espero cumprir, dando alegria, quem sabe conquistando mais títulos.

Na última janela de transferências você novamente foi procurado, agora pelo Fenerbahce (TUR). Como foi a decisão de permanecer?
Quando você joga em clube grande, posso falar que em três anos venho sendo um dos principais jogadores do Palmeiras, sempre vai aparecer interesse de clubes de fora. Tenho meus objetivos no Palmeiras e quero cumpri-los. Sempre falo isso ao Alexandre (Mattos) e ao presidente. Espero ganhar mais títulos até o fim do contrato, ajudando a manter o Palmeiras no topo.

Quais são estes objetivos? O que falta?
Todos os palmeirenses, a diretoria quer muito esta Libertadores. Este ano não deu certo, infelizmente, mas a gente espera montar um time competitivo no ano que vem para ganhar ela.

Então você se imagina na Libertadores do ano que vem jogando pelo Palmeiras, como capitão?
É a prioridade de todo clube brasileiro, ganhar uma Libertadores, chegar em uma final da Libertadores. A gente não conseguiu neste ano, mas ano que vem vamos montar um time forte para isso.

Já se vê como um dos maiores camisa 7 do Palmeiras?
Acho que ainda não. Ainda falta um título internacional, mas fico muito feliz com o carinho do torcedor, quero retribuir em campo, ajudando bastante o Palmeiras, quem sabe para daqui a uns anos olhar para trás e ver que o Dudu também foi um grande camisa 7.

Na eliminação contra o Barcelona (ECU), você saiu chorando por ter se machucado. A frustração no seu caso foi ainda maior?
Nosso time naquele momento do jogo estava bem, tínhamos feito o gol, e no lance que eu machuquei ia sair em um contra-ataque bom, um contra um com o zagueiro. Mas acabei me lesionando, veio a eliminação, tive de ficar 30 dias fora. Agora estou bem, voltei com condicionamento físico bom, espero até dezembro conquistar coisas grandes ainda.

A diferença para o Corinthians caiu em seis pontos nos últimos quatro jogos e o torcedor palmeirense tem feito contas. Tem de acreditar no título mesmo?
A gente tem de fazer nossa parte, que é ganhar os jogos e fim do ano a gente vê o que conquistamos, o que ganhamos. Não temos de fazer contas, tem de pensar jogo a jogo, buscar os três pontos sempre no próximo jogo, que é o Santos. No fim do ano vemos o que Deus tem guardado para a gente.

Na terça houve uma reunião do elenco com Cuca e a diretoria. Por quê?
Acho que é para a gente continuar nesta batida, falando que é muito importante o jogo de sábado, pelo Santos estar na nossa frente em um ponto, pelo campeonato ainda nos dar chance de brigar pelo título. A gente está muito focado nisso. Temos de continuar nessa batida que estamos tendo, estamos com um empate e três vitórias nos últimos quatro jogos. É continuar assim que no fim do ano estaremos bem.

Considera também que este é o jogo mais importante da minimeta de seis partidas?
Acho que sim. É um jogo importante, por ser clássico, por eles estarem um ponto na nossa frente. Temos de fazer valer o mando de campo, fazer valer o apoio de nosso torcedor para fazer um grande jogo.

Dos três rivais, o Santos é aquele que você fez mais gols. É algo que passa pela sua cabeça quando se prepara para o jogo?
É importante saber destas metas que a gente cumpriu. Contra o Santos fiz três gols, Deus sempre me abençoou nestes grandes jogos. Espero que no sábado seja assim também, para fazer gols e ajudar à equipe.

Por tudo que aconteceu nesses três anos, as decisões, provocações, o Santos é o time com maior rivalidade deste elenco?
O maior rival para mim é sempre o próximo. O próximo é o Santos, então é deles que temos de ganhar. A gente espera fazer um grande jogo no sábado, conquistar a vitória e se Deus quiser alcançar a segunda colocação.

Você chegou como um atacante que faz pouco gol e é diferente no Palmeiras. No que você mudou como jogador?
Começou isto ainda em 2014 (no Grêmio), com o Felipão. Agradeço muito ao Felipão, por ele pegar no meu pé de que tinha de entrar mais na área, não só servir, mas finalizar mais. Agradeço a ele, ao Murtosa por ter feito os trabalhinhos comigo, e aqui no Palmeiras ao Cuca, ao Oswaldo, ao Marcelo Oliveira, todos têm uma contribuição nesse sucesso meu no Palmeiras. Espero continuar lutando por esta camisa, para sempre manter o Palmeiras no nível mais alto.

Com o Cuca você viveu seu melhor momento no Palmeiras, e você é um cara de confiança dele. Como é a relação de vocês?
É desde o Cruzeiro, quando ele foi meu treinador e subiu eu definitivo ao profissional. Sempre teve um carinho por mim, como o Eudes, Cuquinha. E criamos uma afinidade muito boa aqui no Palmeiras. Ele me tornou capitão, tenho a confiança dele e eu confio muito no trabalho dele. A gente espera que esta parceira possa continuar por muito tempo aqui.

Houve exagero nas críticas e protestos depois das eliminações, vendo como o time está hoje?
Bateu muita cobrança pelo Palmeiras ter feito grandes investimentos. A gente se manteve tranquilo, sabia que tinha um campeonato difícil, o Brasileiro, ainda está tendo, e passamos por um momento não muito bom no campeonato e agora estamos em um grande momento.

É o melhor momento do Palmeiras no Brasileiro?
Acho que sim. Estamos encorpando o time, temos os 11 titulares, a gente espera que possa continuar nessa batida boa.

O Lucas Lima não joga neste sábado, mas é um atleta que já trocou provocações com vocês e pode chegar no Palmeiras em 2018. Este histórico atrapalha uma possível união no ano que vem?
Todo grande jogador cabe em qualquer equipe. Se for para ele vir para cá, que ele possa vir, se enquadrar na filosofia do clube, na filosofia do time, e que possa nos ajudar bastante aqui. Se não vir também, segue a vida dele e que ele seja feliz onde quer que ele for.

Como você se imagina no fim do ano?
A gente imagina que possa ser campeão, mas se não der, que a gente possa ser vice-campeão. É importante, um time em um ano ser campeão, no outro vice. É difícil um clube conseguir isso. Temos nossa meta de ir para a Libertadores direto. Tem o objetivo do título, mas se não der, vamos ficar felizes com o vice-campeonato e a vaga direta na Libertadores.

وتابع: “أحمد ياسر ريان مهاجم جيد وظهر مع سيراميكا لأن معه محمد إبراهيم وصالح جمعة، بخلاف أنه في الأهلي كان مقيدًا فنيًا وليست كل التمريرات تكون له، لكن شادي مهاجم مُقاتل”.

وتطرق طه للحديث عن عودة محمود كهربا، قائلًا: “إذا تدرب جيدًا وارد أن يكون إضافة، والأهلي ليس في خطر حال عدم انضمام هؤلاء اللاعبين، لأنه يمتلك لاعبين جيدين”.

واختتم: “نحتاج مديرًا فنيًا لديه تكتيك مميز ويعرف قدرات اللاعبين بشكل جيد، ويُعلم اللاعبين كيف يلعبون 3-4-3، ويكون عنده القدرة على تغيير الأسلوب خلال المباراة”.

O Vasco marcou um golaço fora dos gramados na tarde desta terça-feira. Jogadores e membros da comissão técnica do clube fizeram uma visita aoInstituto Nacional do Câncer (Inca), localizado no Centro do Rio de Janeiro, e fizeram a alegria das criançasem tratamento no local.O encontro fez parte da programação da tradicional festa de Dia das Crianças, que este ano recebeu o tema ‘INCAVoluntário encontro de super-heróis’.

A delegação do Vasco contou com os jogadores Bruno Paulista, Nenê, Gabriel Felix, Bruno Cosendey, Jean, Pikachu, Jomar, Ramon, Henrique e Paulo Vitor. O técnico Zé Ricardo disse que os pequenos eram os verdadeiros heróis e agradeceu a oportunidade de participar da festa.

– Para nós é muito gratificante estar participando dessa festa com vocês. Esse encontro de super-heróis é em homenagem a vocês, todos são heróis. É uma honra fazer parte desse momento em um instituto que é referência no país. Desejo a todos muita luz, muita força e que Deus abençoe a vida de vocês. Que vocês continuem sendo esse exemplo de fé e perseverança – disse Zé Ricardo.

O encontro teve espaço para muita descontração e sorrisos. Os jogadores cruz-maltinos visitaram os quartos dos pacientes, participaram do momento de recreação e fizeram muitas fotos, inclusive até com crianças que torciam para equipes rivais.

– É incrível. Elas nos passam o que é força de vontade. A gente acha que tem algum problema, mas realmente não temos nada. É a primeira vez que eu participo de um evento assim. Fiquei bastante emocionado, principalmente com as crianças que estão em tratamento e não puderam estar na festa. Que sirva de lição pra gente que somos abençoados demais. Eles nos veem na TV e nos admiram. Saber desse reconhecimento nos deixa muito felizes. Isso nos dá força. Que a gente consiga pelo menos arrancar um sorriso e possa dar um dia feliz nessa batalha, nessa luta diária que eles têm – comentou o lateral-esquerdo Ramon.

O doutor Franz Campos, diretor do Inca e chefe do setor de urologia, disse que essas atividades são importantes para o tratamentos dos pacientes. Ele agradeceu a visita do Vasco.

-O Instituto Nacional do Câncer promove todo ano essa festa para as crianças que estão sendo tratadas. O Inca completa 80 anos, com o compromisso de continuar atendendo a população pública. Adam Gilchrist’s maiden half-century at Deccan Chargers’ home ground could not give his side the victory needed to take them into the second round of the Champions League. The Deccan players will now disperse to rejoin their various domestic and national sides, reassembling next to defend their IPL title in 2010. Dwayne Bravo did not make the same mistake for T&T.Deccan needed only eight off the final over, but Ganga had held Bravo back for this very situation. Bravo delivered six excellent deliveries, denying the batsmen length and room, and conceded only four runs. “Today we had to analyse the situation a number of times as they were getting a lot closer especially when Gilchrist and Rohit were at the crease,” Bravo said. “The last five overs were really tight and our focus was on hitting the block hole.” T&T were the hungrier side on the day and they adapted quickly, unlike Hyderabad, who stuttered with ball and bat at pivotal moments.

Douglas Luiz is ‘likely’ to drop out of the Aston Villa starting XI against Leicester City if Jacob Ramsey is fit, according to The Birmingham Mail’s John Townley.

The 23-year-old was Villa’s third-highest rated player in their 2-1 midweek loss against Manchester City (via SofaScore), when the £52,000-per-week Brazilian made his first start under Steven Gerrard.

He picked up a 7.3/10 rating from SofaScore, having set up Ollie Watkins’ goal shortly after half-time, while Townley’s colleague Ashley Preece handed him a 7.5, describing him as a ‘standout operator in Villa’s engine room’.

While Luiz was ‘impressive’ against his former club, The Birmingham Mail’s Townley reckons that Gerrard will ‘smell blood’ and select a more attack-minded player in Ramsey if indeed the youngster is fit to feature.

The verdict

It would perhaps be harsh to drop Luiz to the substitutes’ bench off the back of his display on Wednesday night, but Gerrard will want to do all he can to return to winning ways after City halted his early momentum.

Also, we shouldn’t forget that Ramsey has been impressive under the new boss as well. Indeed, the 20-year-old might well have started against City had it not been for a minor ‘niggle’.

He delivered a 7.1/10 display against Crystal Palace last weekend, winning five of his seven ground duels and completing 25 of his 30 passes.

The decision between Ramsey and Luiz presents Gerrard with a pleasant selection headache for Sunday’s visit of Leicester.
