Zaheer thankful for second chance

Zaheer Khan took 4 for 19 and admitted his relief in playing in the 2009 World Twenty20 after missing out in 2007

Zaheer said his shoulder injury in May “was a narrow escape for me. It could have been worse”•Associated Press

A bruised heel prompted Zaheer Khan to be rested from India’s victorious World Twenty20 campaign two years ago in South Africa. In this year’s tournament, however, he was simply relieved that lightning hadn’t struck twice, saying his recovery from the shoulder injury he sustained during the IPL had been a “narrow escape”.On Wednesday night at Trent Bridge, Zaheer was in full flight. His opponents may only have been Ireland but he ran in off a full run-up, bowled at a brisk pace and moved the ball both ways. His opening spell squashed any hopes Ireland harboured of upsetting the world champions. Zaheer cut Ireland opener Jeremy Bray in half with an inswinger to the left-hander before shattering the stumps with a yorker next ball. He then had William Porterfield and Andre Botha edging length deliveries to Yusuf Pathan at slip before returning in the penultimate over to induce an edge from Andrew White.”It is good to be a part of the World Cup,” Zaheer said after his performance. “It was unfortunate that I opted out of the last [Twenty20] World Cup. But that was the right decision at that moment and I am happy to be a part of the team this time.”He nearly wasn’t. Zaheer fell hard on his shoulder while fielding during the Mumbai Indians’ match against Royal Challengers in May and missed the rest of the Twenty20 tournament. He sat out the World Twenty20 warm-up matches against New Zealand and Pakistan, and eased back into action in India’s first group match against Bangladesh, taking 1 for 26 in three overs. He was seen nursing his shoulder with ice packs during practice sessions too.”It was a narrow escape for me. It could have been worse,” Zaheer said. “I was lucky to get away with just four weeks [of being out of the game]. When I fell [during the IPL], I was a bit scared until the scan results were out as to whether the injury was serious or not. Once the scan results were out I was pretty confident. The good thing is that there is nothing major, no [damage] to the shoulder which is a good thing.”Zaheer has worked hard to make a comeback, focusing on workouts to strengthen his shoulder and despite saying he “felt 100%” during the mid-innings break, he knew that some more work needed to be done. He finished the night with 4 for 19, a spell that won him the Player-of-the-Match award. “This was the second game for me and it was important that I pick up some wickets. I have definitely gained a lot of confidence from this performance.”Whether the IPL has been a boon or bane for teams heading into the World Twenty20 has been a frequently asked question. Most of the players who participated in the tournament in South Africa rave about its benefits. There are those who disagree. Within the Indian team itself there are examples of the beneficial and detrimental effects of the IPL. The injury to Virender Sehwag has deprived the team of its regular opener, and another nearly cost them their best bowler. However, the tournament also helped India find a replacement for the void created by Sehwag’s absence. “It has definitely helped players,” Zaheer said. “You see someone like Rohit Sharma, the kind of form he is in. It is good that we have been playing the Twenty20 format for the last five weeks. It has definitely helped us.”Zaheer will face a sterner test when India take on West Indies at Lord’s in their first Super Eight game. He has his sights set on knocking over their most dangerous player, Chris Gayle.

Fabrizio Romano drops Villa update on Matty Cash

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Aston Villa star Matty Cash will now be able to play for Poland instead of England.

What’s the story?

With the full-back not having earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad, speculation had been growing in recent months that Cash could instead opt to play for Poland – the country where his mother was born.

Now, Romano has delivered an update on that situation on Twitter, confirming that Cash had indeed received his Polish passport and would be eligible to play for them during next month’s international break.

He said: “Official and confirmed. Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash received the Polish passport and he’ll now be able to play for Poland instead of England.”

Great news for Cash

With significant competition for places at right-back for England – the likes of Trent Alexander Arnold, Kyle Walker and Reece James to name but a few – things were always going to be difficult for Cash to break into Southgate’s squad.

It’s a position that’s well-stocked for the Three Lions boss so while the Villa man has enjoyed an impressive time in the Premier League following his move from Championship side Nottingham Forest back in the summer of 2020, it’s not been too much of a shock that Cash has been overlooked.

But now, with him able to represent Poland, the right-back could well be competing on the biggest international stage, playing in the likes of the World Cup and European Championships.

Villa fans should rightly be delighted with the potential of seeing Cash finally earn some international honours given how well he has performed over these past 18 months for the club.

Meanwhile, Villa should be targeting this Serie A midfielder…

Hay drops Leeds injury update on Raphinha

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed that Leeds United duo Junior Firpo and Raphinha are “likely to be available” for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Norwich City.

What’s the story?

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have endured a nightmare start to the top-flight season thus far, picking up just the one win and finding themselves just outside the relegation zone.

Both Firpo and Raphinha have suffered their share of injury issues in recent weeks, with the former missing the past couple of games, and the latter being forced off last time out against Wolves.

However, Hay has delivered a promising update to the club’s fans about the duo’s injury status heading into Sunday’s crunch clash against fellow strugglers Norwich.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Injury latest at Leeds: Firpo and Raphinha are likely to be available but Bamford missing again for Norwich on Sunday. Phillips fine after his return on Tuesday.”

Double boost for Leeds

Given the awful form in which Leeds currently find themselves, the double boost of having both Firpo and Raphinha back and raring to go is a massive boost to Bielsa.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has previously lauded the bargain that Leeds got in Raphinha in particular, declaring: “He’s full of energy, he’s got a (good) work ethic as well where he works for the team, he just does everything right.

“I’m a big fan of his and the recruitment there to find that player, because for £17m, there will be people now scratching their head going ‘why didn’t we get him?'”

While Raphinha’s return is superb news, having the attack-minded Firpo back for a game against the Premier League’s leakiest defence is sure to please Leeds fans, too.

In his real breakthrough season with Real Betis during the 2018/19 campaign, he managed three goals and four assists in La Liga, as well as averaging 0.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, player analyst Josh Hobbs said of the flying full-back: “Going forwards, he’s a good dribbler – particularly when he gets up to speed and he can steam past players. He likes to play a pass into midfield and then sprint down the line to receive in behind and get into the box.

“His delivery in wide areas is usually a fizzed low cross, which is dangerous as often if the player at the front post misses it, can be met by somebody running centrally or to the back post.”

The £10.8m-rated ace has the attacking instincts to cause real problems for the Canaries this afternoon, and Bielsa should be throwing him into the starting line-up after his return from injury.

Hay’s update on the duo is sure to leave Leeds fans absolutely buzzing.

Meanwhile, Leeds must finally sell this first team player…

Wright justifies himself but questions remain

Compared with their soporific efforts against Scotland on Tuesday, this was an England invigorated under the floodlights at Lord’s

Compared with their soporific efforts against Scotland on Tuesday, this was an England invigorated under the floodlights at Lord’s. In the field they were sharp, none more so than the galloping Ryan Sidebottom, who claimed a brilliant running catch at third man to remove Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 0, while the batting of Luke Wright and Ravi Bopara made a teasing target of 145 look puny.By the time the Lord’s lights had kicked in, England were kicking on, with Wright at last justifying the faith invested in his power-hitting, and Bopara showing once again what a little chutzpah can do at the top of an innings. And yet, just how ready can England really feel for their World Twenty20 campaign, after a puzzling piece of scheduling that landed them their 17th encounter with West Indies in the space of four months?Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say, which perhaps explains the refusal of Chris Gayle to waste his time getting involved in this latest encounter. With 88 from 56 balls in his last outing against Ireland, Gayle clearly felt his bat had talked sufficiently to compensate for the looseness of his tongue in the build-up to the Test series.West Indies’ stand-in captain, Denesh Ramdin confirmed that Gayle had not intended to play any part with the bat despite being named in the 13-man squad for this unofficial contest. “He’s resting today,” said Ramdin. “It was a bit of fun leading the team, with the ball going to all parts of the ground, but hopefully we can get it right with him coming back for the first game. We are a team that can show up on its day, so hopefully we can get it right.”We’re still enjoying playing England,” added Ramdin. “We thought 145 was a competitive total, but the openers came out and went hard at us, and they got the stand that they wanted. The run-rate was really high, and we tried to pull it back but they continued to go hard because they didn’t lose any wickets in the first six [overs].”They ought to have lost a wicket to the first ball after the Powerplays, however, when Bopara spanked Dwayne Bravo to Sulieman Benn at short midwicket. The chance, like so many in the past few months, went begging, and England powered onwards with Bopara, once again, to the fore.”Ravi’s great to bat with,” said Wright. “He’s really come of age of late, the way he’s playing. He’s taken his form from the Test matches to the one-dayers and now to the Twenty20s. He really takes the pressure off when he plays the way he does.”At first that was just as well for Wright, seeing as he took nine deliveries to get off the mark, three of which – from Fidel Edwards – whistled past his flailing bat without any contact being made. “I found it quite hard to start with, I wasn’t seeing it so well, but it was my choice to try and be positive,” said Wright. “I think you’ve sometimes got to pick your bowlers a bit, and target your overs. Fidel was bowling really well, and before Ravi got out we spoke about him being the dangerman. We wanted to see him off and put pressure on the other bowlers, and luckily that came off.”Three spanking sixes from consecutive Kieron Pollard deliveries kicked Wright into top gear, and gave an animated 9000-strong crowd something to cheer about. It was also a timely justification of his selection alongside Bopara, which – assuming there are no surprises for the tournament opener against Netherlands on Friday – will amount to England’s 12th opening combination in 16 Twenty20 internationals.”The guys back me, and want me to express myself and believe in myself, and that’s what I tried to do,” said Wright. “I went away on the Lions tour to New Zealand and got a few hundreds, and I’ve always done well in Twenty20s domestically. I’ve worked hard and it’s got me back into the squad straight away, which I’m delighted with. I’ve now got to try and get consistent and push on from this.”England themselves have got some consistency now – six consecutive victories across three forms of the game, friendly or otherwise, since the start of the international summer. A seventh surely awaits on Friday, regardless of the potency of Dirk Nannes and Ryan ten Doeschate. But after that, are they really prepared to take sides with greater know-how and that extra notch of incentive that proper competitive cricket brings? In sitting out this fixture, Gayle ensured that West Indies have not shown their true colours to England since they departed the Caribbean in April. As an incentivised Scotland suggested at Trent Bridge, it could be a shock to the system when they eventually take the field with a team with a will to win.

India and West Indies fight for pole position

India will need their top order to fire to go 2-1 up in the series and take an unassailable lead

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya02-Jul-2009Match factsFriday, July 3, 2009
Start time 09.30 (13.30 GMT)
The Big PictureIndia will have to look beyond Yuvraj Singh to counter the West Indies pace attack•Associated Press

It’s been a year of contrasting fortunes for the two teams in the ODI format, and they have much to make up for in tomorrow’s contest in St Lucia. India have had a successful 2009 in the 50-over game, with series wins in New Zealand and Sri Lanka. An unassailable lead with a win in St Lucia will boost their chances of wrapping another series away from home, making amends for their debacle in the World Twenty20 and ending their hectic few weeks ahead of a two-month break on a high. West Indies have been disappointing this year, winning four ODIs and losing eight, but have the momentum going into a crunch game with a comprehensive win in Kingston to level the series. However, they are under as much pressure to perform at home. A 2-1 lead, and more so a series win, will do a lot towards easing that burden and leaving them a confident outfit as they take on Bangladesh in their next series. The home team’s performance in the second ODI marked a major improvement, particularly in its bowling. West Indies found a gem in Ravi Rampaul, who swung the ball both ways, inducing the batsmen to make mistakes, while Jerome Taylor was the pick of the West Indies bowlers. He claimed the wickets of Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, each of whom had a role to play in smashing 339 in the series opener. Though they didn’t have a big score to chase, the West Indies batsmen ensured their team outclassed India in every field, with Chris Gayle and Runako Morton deciding the game even before a wicket fell with a century opening stand.India’s bowlers were indisciplined in the first game, bowling 19 wides and two front-foot no-balls, and the trait seemed to have rubbed off on their batsmen. Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj, each got out chasing wide deliveries, while the tail, with the exception of RP Singh, who added 101 with Dhoni to save India’s blushes, was hapless. Dhoni, at the end of the game, pointed out that over-reliance on Yuvraj, who has scores of 131 and 35 in the series, was not going to win India the series. And with an important game coming up, India’s top order will have to step up, with greater preparedness to counter the short ball.ODI form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
India – LWLWW
West Indies – WLLLN
Watch out for …Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma: With an average of 25.33 in 39 ODIs, there is plenty of room for improvement for Rohit in the ODI format. Another failure at No.3 tomorrow is something he can ill afford after scores of 4 and 0 in the series so far. Gambhir has had a satisfactory year, averaging 38.80, but his weakness against the short ball was exposed in the ICC World Twenty20, and in the first game by Jerome Taylor. The pair will do well to deliver when it matters tomorrow to boost India’s chances of a series win.West Indies’ pace attack: Each of West Indies’ pace bowlers bagged wickets in the eight-wicket rout in Kingston, using swing and variations to unsettle the Indian batsmen. Taylor was the best among them, Rampaul was the surprise package and Bravo bowled a scorcher to get rid of Yusuf Pathan. They made the best use of favourable conditions while India were batting, and if they are offered anything similar at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, India’s batsmen are up for another serious challenge.Team newsRavindra Jadeja had an impressive ODI debut, making an unbeaten 60 against Sri Lanka but has failed in this series, getting dismissed in an identical manner on both occasions. He was out first ball in the first game, playing away from his body and edging to the keeper, and managed just 7 in the second with his team in trouble. He could be left out of the next game for allrounder Abhishek Nayar to make his international debut.India (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Dinesh Karthik, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja/ Abhishek Nayar, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 RP Singh, 11 Ashish Nehra.West Indies retained their squad for the final two one-dayers and are likely to go ahead with a winning combination.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Runako Morton, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Darren Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Jerome Taylor, 9 David Bernard, 10 Suleiman Benn, 11 Ravi Rampaul.Pitch and conditionsGayle expects the pitch to be full of runs as the venue has traditionally helped the batsmen.Stats and trivia West Indies have played nine games at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, winning five and losing four. India are yet to play a game at this venue. West Indies’ eight-wicket victory in Kingston was their biggest against India in terms of balls remaining after winning. They won with 95 balls to spare, bettering their effort in Port of Spain 20 years earlier, where they had won with 68 balls left. MS Dhoni and RP Singh’s stand of 101 is the fourth-highest for the ninth wicket in ODIs, and the third-highest for India. The average score while batting first in St Lucia is 243. The side batting first has won on seven occasions and lost nine. The highest score at the venue is 363, by New Zealand against Canada in the 2007 World Cup. The lowest is 146, by West Indies against England earlier this year. Quotes”It is a case of two good teams playing against each other, and we expect two very competitive matches.”
“Yuvraj, on any given day, can destroy any bowling attack. When he is in that sort of mood (as he was in the first ODI) he is very difficult to bowl to. We have to try and contain him as much as possible but at the same time he’s experienced and has a lot of power and he is definitely the main batter in this Indian team.”
“We have good communication out there which is very good and we can assess the conditions as quickly as possible and make the necessary adjustments. I want him to play his game and I will support him at the other end.”

West Ham fans criticise Fabianski display

A number of West Ham supporters have criticised Lukasz Fabianski’s performance in the Hammers’ Premier League clash away to Aston Villa.

David Moyes’s side started the day in fourth place in the Premier League, showing what an impressive start they have made to the season.

There was an added incentive going into the Villa game, with victory enough to take them level on points with reigning champions Manchester City, further highlighting their current fortunes.

The Hammers went into the interval 2-1 in front, with Ben Johnson and Declan Rice on target, but Fabianski will surely feel that he could have done better for Ollie Watkins’ equaliser in the first half, having been off-balance when the Villa striker shot. He did redeem himself somewhat with a fingertip save to deny the ex-Brentford marksman shortly before the hour mark.

Also, as per SofaScore, the Polish veteran had one of the lowest passing accuracy rates among the Irons’ players and lost possession on numerous occasions throughout the match.
