West Brom dealt Kean Bryan injury blow

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a blow regarding the fitness of Kean Bryan ahead of their Championship fixture on Tuesday night.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a report by Birmingham Live, who claimed that the centre-back does not look likely to be deemed fit enough to feature in the clash against Derby County at The Hawthorns.

As a result, the report suggests it looks more than likely that Valerien Ismael will stick with the trio of Cedric Kipre, Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi for the match – the same defensive three who started Albion’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Millwall last weekend.

Ismael will be gutted

Considering that Bryan was signed as a result of the respective injuries to the Frenchman’s first-choice centre-backs Matt Clarke and Dara O’Shea, the potential absence of the 24-year-old for tonight’s clash against the Rams is sure to have left the 45-year-old manager gutted.

Indeed, neither Kipre nor Ajayi did much in the Millwall fixture to convince Ismael that they would be worthy of keeping their places in the starting XI. The former lost 56% of his duels, ceding possession of the ball on 14 occasions and earning a SofaScore match rating of 6.7, while Ajayi made an error which led to a shot and gave away the ball 15 times, receiving a SofaScore match rating of just 6.4.

As such, the addition of Bryan to Ismael’s back three for the Derby game would have almost certainly provided the Frenchman with a considerable boost to his chances of getting the Baggies back to winning ways in the fixture.

However, unfortunately for the Albion manager, it looks as if he will have to once again make do without the former Sheffield United man, which will undoubtedly come as a blow to the 45-year-old.

A entrada é franca.

England warm up with Warwickshire for Ashes

An England XI will take on Warwickshire to provide vital first-class match practice fo the team ahead of the first Ashes Test against Australia

Cricinfo staff18-Dec-2008Preparation is the key to England’s Ashes campaign, according to chairman of selectors Geoff Miller. The ECB has announced its fixtures list for the 2009 season and, with the Ashes understandably taking the top billing, a three-day warm-up match has been slotted in between an England XI and Warwickshire immediately before the first Test against Australia in Cardiff.”We put a relevance on everything we can arrange to our advantage, and the best possible preparation is a very big part of that,” Miller said. “Pete [Peter Moores, the England coach] and Kevin [Pietersen] are very hot on the best preparation. It is down to how we think we can be sure we do it as well as possible.”The warm-up match at Edgbaston represents vital first-class match practice for England, many of whose players will have spent much of the preceding five weeks playing Twenty20 cricket – either for their county’s Twenty20 campaign or in the World Twenty20 which England are hosting. Moores could have opted to send the players back to the provinces – a decision which would have favoured the counties – but instead has decided to keep the team in one place.”There are County Championship games,” Miller acknowledged. “Pete makes that decision, and we felt that having everyone together – playing with one another and being with one another – would make it easier to control the preparation and create the right atmosphere in the squad.”There is a big difference between Twenty20 and five-day cricket – and, of course, we want to be sure everyone is ready to do his best.”While England will take on Warwickshire, there will be an even greater contest close to Edgbaston: the England Lions against Australia at New Road, a match that Miller said broadens the selection pool.”The Lions are very much part of our playing strength in depth,” he said. “It is not just a Test unit. Whoever is picked against Australia [for the Lions at Worcester] will know they are very much part of it.”Of course they could get in [the squad for the first Test in Cardiff]. You never know what might happen – and form, at that time of year specifically, is going to be very relevant.”

Liverpool fans urge Reds to sign Bellingham

A number of Liverpool supporters have urged the Reds to sign England international Jude Bellingham after he was linked with a move to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp didn’t do much transfer business during the summer window, only bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

Meanwhile, the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri headed to pastures new and after the injury to Harvey Elliott the squad certainly feels a bit light in midfield.

That is looking even more of an issue now that Thiago and Naby Keita are also currently injured, leaving Klopp with a lack of options.

According to Bild [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool are interested in signing Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund, even though Klopp is unsure about buying players from his former club.

Liverpool fans love Bellingham rumour

Ricky Ponting has taken the blame for Australia’s poor batting performances during the series loss to South Africa despite being the second highest run-scorer in the opening four games. Only Shaun Marsh (213) has been more successful than Ponting, who has 202 at 50.50, but the captain said he needed to assume more responsibility in the final match in Perth on Friday.”Any team wants their guys at the top, at least someone, to make 100 and we haven’t had a century made in this series so far,” Ponting told AAP. “At the end of the day the buck does stop with me. I’m ultimately the one that is responsible and takes the flak if we lose and takes the credit if we win games.”South Africa took the series in Adelaide despite Ponting’s streak of 46, 64, 29 and 63. “I felt I’ve batted really well in all four of these one-day games, but at the same time I felt I’ve left a lot of runs out there almost every time I’ve been out in the middle,” he said.”So I just want to finish off this series very strongly. I want to put in a good performance for myself and the team, and take a bit more responsibility than I have in the first four games.”

One switch-hit too many

Andrew McGlashan presents the plays of the fourth day between West Indies and England in Antigua

James Anderson: are you Alastair Cook in disguise? © AFP
Shot of a No.3
Now we know why James Anderson kept his place for this match ahead of Ryan Sidebottom – because of his nightwatchman skills. He did the job twice, and on the fourth morning had the freedom to play a few shots thanks to England’s incredibly strong position. His stand-out effort was a forcing back-foot drive through the covers which wouldn’t have disgraced the man at the other end, Alastair Cook. No wonder there was the occasional confusion about who was on strike.Taking one for the team
Owais Shah has made a good impression on his long-awaited return to the Test team and came out with positive intent after replacing Anderson. He swung Daren Powell over midwicket for a huge six and was always keen to keep the scoreboard moving. His dismissal came in selfless style as he heaved at Powell again and was bowled. It was especially impressive that someone returning to the side only had thoughts of the team’s cause.Only an inch, but it’s enough
He is tall, granted, and has a long stride, but there’s no excuse for Sulieman Benn bowling no-balls. He found out what it feels like to miss out on a wicket when Kevin Pietersen drove a return catch straight to him, only to see Rudi Koertzen’s arm outstretched. Replays showed he was only an inch over, but that’s enough. In the context of the game it didn’t matter hugely, but at some point it will.Ambidextrous Pietersen
We all now that Pietersen likes to bring out the switch-hit – and he often manages it with great success – but in this innings he went to extremes. During an over from Ryan Hinds he almost spent it batting left handed. He was actually like a jack-in-a-box, struggling to stay still for very long and again seemed to make batting look hard work. In the end, the switch-hit brought his downfall – for the first time – but it’s unlikely to stop him wheeling it out.Cook’s delight
There’s nothing unusual about seeing the fielders’ delight when a wicket falls, especially one as important as Chris Gayle, but Cook’s jig of joy could have been for another reason, too. He had the tough job of fielding silly point when Graeme Swann was bowling to Gayle, and one shot off the back foot struck him a painful blow around the buttock area. Even when Gayle shouldered arms, Cook was swinging round in invasive action. No wonder he was so pleased to see the umpire’s finger go up.Captain fills in
Andrew Strauss has stepped up in this Test and led from the front. His 169 set the tone for England’s dominance, but instead of resting on his laurels he put himself in at silly point with Andrew Flintoff struggling due to his hip problem. Normally Ian Bell would be in there but he’s been dropped, and Owais Shah hasn’t got the best hands in the game, so Strauss grabbed the helmet and perched himself under the batsman’s nose. Swann would have focussed even harder on not bowling long-hops – he wouldn’t want the captain to get hit.

Marcal lets Wolves down at St Mary’s

Wolves’ 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon was far from perfect as Bruno Lage’s men managed to grind out for the last ten minutes of the game.

Yet, if you could have hand-picked a winning goal scorer before the game, every Wolves supporter on the planet would have chosen Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican scored a priceless goal in their win over Southampton at St Mary’s, his first since suffering his horrendous head injury last November.

It is nearly ten months to the very day since Jimenez fractured his skull but the way he took his goal, it looked as if he’d never been away.

He chased down a ball over the top before outmuscling a defender and then turning two more Saints players inside out.

It was remarkable composure from the striker who then stuck the ball past Alex McCarthy with ease.

The goal was his opening strike of the campaign and was just the second scored by a Wolves player in the Premier League in six outings this term.

Lage tried something different in attack with Trincao and Adama Traore dropped to the bench in favour of Hwang Hee-chan and Daniel Podence.

Although that worked with Wolves gaining all three points, there were some shoddy moments at the back.

Lage’s men began the game trying to play out from the back but it didn’t go well with Marcal at left-wing back.

He has been ever-present in the top-flight this term but will no doubt be looking over his shoulder in the direction of Rayan Ait-Nouri after his poor showing this weekend.

The Brazilian was poor in possession of the ball and also lacked the discipline to stay in the right position at the correct times.

Leander Dendoncker had to bail him out in the first half after losing the ball and it didn’t get much better for the 32-year-old.

He was caught out of position by Tino Livramento who ended up causing plenty of problems down Southampton’s right-hand side.

Marcal only won 30.7% of the defensive duels he was involved in, committed three fouls and was dribbled past on two occasions.

Yet, it was when he was in control of the play that he severely let the manager down.

Just 51% of his passes throughout the afternoon were successful, meaning he had the worst tally of anyone to start the game from both teams.

That meant that the wing-back lost possession on a mighty 25 occasions. Again, that was the worst number from any player on the South Coast.

Marcal has had some positive moments this season but after Ait-Nouri’s encouraging display against Tottenham last week where he registered an assist, he is beginning to stake his case for a place in the side.

AND in other news, Bruno Lage could soon replicate one of Nuno’s big Wolves blunders from last season…
