Alcohol a factor in Symonds' downfall

Andrew Symonds has admitted that alcohol played a part in his poor attitude this year and getting axed from the squad in Darwin was the wake-up call he needed to address his behaviour. Symonds also conceded that he had hurt his relationship with his good friend Michael Clarke, the stand-in captain, when the Darwin decision was made.Speaking for the first time about the reasons that led to his being sent home, Symonds said he had started drinking too much after last season’s racism row with the India spinner Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan was alleged to have called Symonds a monkey during the Sydney Test and was suspended for three Tests but the ban was overturned on appeal.”At times, I was drinking too much and I wasn’t a good bloke to be around,” Symonds said on Channel Nine. “I had turned bad, I think, with the buildup of the whole of last summer and the things that had unfolded.”I wasn’t in a great place. Looking back now it probably happened at the right time that I got sent home and told to straighten myself out. I feel much better within myself. Even if I don’t come back and play great cricket, I know that I have done something that will improve what I need to be as a person.”It is not the first time Symonds has revealed his trouble with alcohol. In his 2006 autobiography, Symonds recalled the sketchy details of a pub crawl in Cardiff the previous year that led to him being dumped from the side that played Bangladesh the next morning when he turned up at the ground drunk.Having missed the recent tour of India, Symonds is likely to return to the Test side at the Gabba on Thursday, when Australia take on New Zealand. Symonds has not played a Test since the tour of the Caribbean and it was on that trip that reports emerged of a bar-room argument between him and Clarke. It was Clarke who tried to help Symonds sober up after his Cardiff bender and on the 2006 tour of South Africa pulled Symonds away from a potential punch-up with a rugby player. But their relationship took another blow when Clarke was a key part of the team leadership group that sent Symonds home from Darwin following his fishing trip and Symonds said he had not treated Clarke, the team’s vice-captain, appropriately.”I did something silly with him one night and I suppose I was a bit disrespectful to him,” Symonds said. “That relationship is still alive, but to be perfectly honest it is not what it was. We are both making efforts to get it back to where it was because that’s a friendship I don’t want to lose.”Symonds knows he cannot afford another behavioural slip-up or “it’s not going to be a pretty ending”. He made his comeback appearance in Australian colours in the All-Stars Twenty20 match on Friday, when he regained some of his lost form with 45 from 35 balls.

Everton: James Rodriguez told he’s surplus

While Everton very quietly went about their transfer business this summer, there was a big saga that engulfed Goodison Park.

That happened to revolve around James Rodriguez, a man who was desperate to escape Merseyside and move elsewhere.

What’s the word?

James missed a big portion of games towards the back end of last season due to fatigue and hasn’t been seen in a competitive sense on a regular basis for Everton since April.

The Colombian did play in pre-season but hasn’t played a single match in the Premier League since Rafa Benitez took charge.

His agent was trying to engineer a move to Italy while a return to former club Porto was also on the table.

A swap deal involving Luis Diaz was proposed and Everton were confident of reaching an agreement. Ultimately, Rodriguez couldn’t find a suitable club and has stayed with the Toffees.

Greg O’Keeffe issued an update on the playmaker shortly after the deadline passed, revealing what he’d been told and also the remarkable wages he was earning.

The Athletic reporter said: “Suggestions I’ve heard, which I can’t fully describe, is that you might be looking at north of £200,000 a week when you factor in everything – [the] full extent of his deal.

“So this is a player who’s on eye-watering money. And unless something changes, could well be kicking his heels till January at least.

“You know, he’s been told, surplus to requirements, face doesn’t fit – he’s been told that. He had an opportunity to leave, he wouldn’t budge on his wage demands.”

Fans fuming

Everton may have signed the former Real Madrid star on a free transfer but if he does really earn around £200k-per-week, supporters should be fuming.

Rodriguez contributed to ten Premier League goals last term and was their most creative player for key passes per match. That being said, his attitude on and off the pitch over the last six months has been extremely questionable.

The idea that he was too tired to play should have sent alarm bells ringing at the back end of last season and his discipline this term has also been bizarre.

Rodriguez had to self-isolate at one stage and during a remarkable Twitch stream, he declared that he didn’t even know who Everton’s next opponents were.

For any player at the club, that is a strange admission, but for one who earns as much as he does, it’s even worse.

Cutting ties with him this summer, especially in return for Diaz, would have been the perfect solution.

Instead, Benitez will have to decide whether he wants to call on a player who doesn’t want to play for the club.

Rodriguez’ talent is undeniable but his commitment is poor. Fans should be extremely unpleased with how it’s all unravelled.

Reporter drops Scarlett claim at Spurs

Speaking in a football.london Q&A, Tottenham Hotspur reporter Rob Guest has made a claim about highly-rated youngster Dane Scarlett.

The Lowdown: Scarlett set for stardom?

The 17-year-old made his competitive Spurs debut against Ludogorets in the Europa League last season, becoming their youngest ever player to do that (Goal).

Following another cameo against Wolfsberger in the same competition, former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho lauded the forward as a ‘diamond’ whilst backing him to become a ‘fantastic player’ (BT Sport via The Sun)

The Portuguese also likened Scarlett to Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, with Guest now making a claim about the Tottenham teenager.

The Latest: Guest makes Scarlett claim…

Speaking in the Q&A, Guest said that the promising talent ‘should get plenty of minutes’ under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo this season.

Meanwhile, the reporter also said that Scarlett is ‘rated extremely highly’ within the club.

“Scarlett is rated extremely highly at the club and he should get plenty of minutes in Europe and the cup competitions,” Guest replied when asked exactly how much faith is being put in the youngster at Spurs.

“Chances will also more than likely be there for him in the league going on the lack of another out-and-out striker. However, he just needs to be eased into action given his age.”

The Verdict: Exciting times in the academy…

As well as Scarlett, there seems to be plenty of hype surrounding the likes of Oliver Skipp and Alfie Devine to name a few.

Tottenham’s thriving youth prospects have always been a major talking point at N17 and there have been no sign of that slowing down over the last two or three seasons.

Scarlett in particular, now Spurs’ youngest ever debutant, will have eyes on him this year and it will be very interesting to see just how much he will feature under Nuno.

County Champions Durham have pulled off a major signing by bringing Ian Blackwell, the Somerset allrounder, to Chester-le-Street.Durham will be Blackwell’s third county after he joined Somerset from Derbyshire in 2000. He will strengthen Durham’s team in all formats and can slot into a strong middle order. His left-arm spin will be especially valuable as it’s the one area Durham are less well stocked.”I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the Somerset supporters who I will sorely miss,” Blackwell told Somerset’s website. “Since joining the club they have all given me fantastic support, and a great reception on and off the field.”He added that the move was based on the desire to earn an England recall after playing one Test and 34 ODIs. “Making this cricketing decision has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” he said. “I hope I am able to utilise my move to Durham so I am able to progress in all formats of the game and push for future England recognition.”Geoff Cook, Durham’s head coach, said it was important Durham didn’t stand still after their Championship success. “With Durham looking to constantly improve our squad when it became clear Ian was available we grabbed the chance of signing him. I think it’s important to sign players of Ian’s quality and experience to continue the progress of the squad in all forms of the game.”Chief executive David Harker added: “We were delighted to win the Championship last season but it is important that we learn lessons and continue to add quality players, such as Ian, to the squad when they become available.”Blackwell scored 1006 in the 2008 Championship, including three centuries and a best of 158, supplementing that with 21 wickets at 45.66

No penalty for opting-out – Miller

England’s national selector, Geoff Miller, has paved the way for a weakened squad to return to India ahead of the forthcoming Test series, by insisting that no player will be penalised if they choose the safety-first option

England’s national selector, Geoff Miller, has paved the way for a weakened squad to return to India ahead of the forthcoming Test series, by insisting that no player will be penalised if they choose the safety-first option and decide to stay at home with their families.Emphasising that safety was his priority, Miller told The Guardian that an opt-out would “not count against” anyone, and added: “Players need to be on their full mettle. There is no point in anyone going out there if their mind is on physical self-preservation. We need them performing with bat and ball. But depending on the character involved, it might not be right for some.”With that in mind, Miller added that England’s captain, Kevin Pietersen, had been canvassing opinion from his team-mates, although as many as three senior players are already believed to have opted out. Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff, who picked up an ankle injury in last week’s fifth ODI, are highly unlikely to travel back with the team, while James Anderson, whose wife is pregnant, is also a doubt.Harmison, unsurprisingly, has been the most vocal dissenter in the England camp. “I’m sorry, but whatever is being asked of us in the next few days, at the moment, the idea of being asked to go back out there is the last thing on my mind,” he told the Mail on Sunday. “This is beyond cricket. This is beyond anything. It’s all very well for people back home to say we should carry on with the tour, but none of what has happened has anything to do with cricket.”The England squad is expected to fly back to India on Thursday or Friday, only a week after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai that killed more than 200 people. Mumbai had been scheduled to stage the second Test between December 19 and 23, but that venue has now been shifted to the southern city of Chennai. Talks are also underway about a change of venue for the first Test on December 11, with Ahmedabad expected to make way for Mohali. The entire trip, however, still hinges on the content of the security report that is currently being compiled by Reg Dickason, the team’s security advisor, with inputs from various sources such as the British government and the Indian board. Dickason, a regular member of the tour party in recent years, is said to be trusted “100%” by the players, although his assurances alone may not be enough to ensure a full-strength party for the Tests.Nevertheless, for some fringe players of the England team, expediency alone may be enough to sway their opinions. The spinner, Graeme Swann, who stands to make his Test debut – nine years after his first England selection – told BBC Five Live that he was “not that keen” to return to India, but said he would be happy to abide by the contents of the report.”I have every faith in Dickason, and if he comes back saying: ‘Look guys, it’s safe, we can go back there, we can do some good and get playing cricket’ then I would go,” said Swann. “Obviously it’s tricky for people like myself who are trying to forge a regular place in the team. It comes down to thinking, ‘If I don’t go will I miss out on future selection’ and stuff like that, which sort of clouds the issue a little bit. It’s certainly not an easy decision to make and not one that anyone will be enjoying.”Speaking to BBC Radio Four’s Today programme, the former England captain, Graham Gooch, said he believed the series remained in serious doubt. “The players have returned home, they’ll have spoken to their families and young children and it’s a tremendous pull on the heart-strings.”Cricket teams around the world have [previously] been caught up in terrorist situations but have never been a target,” said Gooch. “But it’s been stated in this case that British and American passport holders were a target, so you’d have to think, sadly, that an England team and their supporters would be targets. If one individual decides they cannot go then others will probably follow.”

Soyuncu’s shocking start continues

Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu continued his shocking start to the new season with a dreadful display for Turkey while on international duty.

Senol Gunes’ charges were thrashed 6-1 by the Netherlands at the Amsterdam ArenA on Tuesday night as Memphis Depay scored his first international hat-trick.

The 27-year-old combined beautifully with Davy Klaasen for the Oranje’s opening two goals, with both men taking it in turns to assist the other.

And then things went from bad to worse for Turkey and, in particular, Soyuncu. At the 38 minute mark, the Leicester centre-back brought down Klaasen with a clumsy challenge in the box, gifting Depay the chance to double his tally from the spot and deservedly picking up a yellow card.

Then, the Barcelona forward wrong-footed Soyuncu with a clever bit of play, drawing a needless foul from the 6 ft 1 beast, which resulted in his second yellow on the stroke of halftime.

As per SofaScore, he received a match rating of just 5.2 out of 10, the lowest total of any player on the pitch in the Dutch capital.

And when taking a closer inspection of his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. Soyuncu won just one of his three duels during the 44 minutes he was on the field of play and made just a single tackle and single interception.

He also failed to make a clearance, lost possession five times and committed two fouls, highlighting his dreadful display for his nation.

Soyuncu’s latest high-profile mistakes come after he was at fault for at least one of West Ham United’s goals as they thrashed Leicester 4-1 at the London Stadium before he gave away a penalty in their last outing away at Norwich City.

The Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that his centre-back’s form improves following the resumption of domestic football, with current champions Manchester City set to visit the King Power Stadium over the weekend.

Barrios celebra bom momento no Grêmio e comenta saída do Palmeiras

Queria ficar no Brasil.

O camisa 18 do Grêmio, aliás, diz estar bem adaptado à equipe gaúcha e considera essencial a confiança depositada pelo técnico Renato Portaluppi.

– O time me recebeu muito bem, o clube confiou em mim, o treinador. O Renato me passou uma confiança grande.
