Neves and Traore could stay at Wolves

Wolves came into the transfer window with plenty of work to do but it could only happen if they sold some of their best players.

The Old Gold had limited spending power and it was thought that in order to reinvest in the playing squad, Ruben Neves and Adama Traore would have to leave Molineux behind.

What’s the word?

Wolves are heading into the final weeks of the window still aiming to sign a centre-forward but they are set to gain the necessary money in order to do so by selling the likes of Rafa Mir, Patrick Cutrone and Romain Saiss.

That’s according to Tim Spiers who delivered an encouraging update on the future for Wolves in the window.

In his latest column for The Athletic, Spiers revealed that Wolves aren’t anticipating selling either Neves or Traore.

Arsenal’s interest in the former has never materialised and they will now only sell if their sizeable asking prices are met.

Huge boost

After Wolves finished 13th in the Premier League last season, this will come as a massive boost to their hopes of getting back in continental action.

During Nuno Santo’s final season at Molineux, he struggled to find an answer to their troubles as the Old Gold slipped down the table after missing Raul Jimenez from November onwards.

Pedro Neto finished as their joint-top scorer alongside the aforementioned Neves. That provides a big reason as to why they simply have to keep hold of the central midfielder.

Furthermore, Traore has shown that he’s one of the most dangerous players in the top-flight.

During the 2020/21 campaign, no player in the whole division recorded more successful dribbles than his 4.1 per match.

He did only score two goals last term but on his day, the Spaniard is an unstoppable force capable of scaring defenders with his remarkable speed and trickery.

Lage hasn’t had an ideal start to life in the Midlands but the idea that the Wolves hierarchy isn’t keen on selling should be music to his ears.

They are two key components in the Wolves XI and if they are to replicate their top-half finishes, they will need them to remain at the club. Consequently, fans should be absolutely delighted at this update.

Trescothick and Langer lift Somerset to the top

A round-up from the latest County Championship matches

Somerset romped to an emphatic eight-wicket win over Surrey at Whitgift School, completing the victory just after lunch and thereby lifting them to the top of Division One. Surrey’s tail didn’t last long: Saqlain Mushtaq top-edged an attempted sweep, before Charl Willoughby bowled Jade Dernbach and removed Pedro Collins for 5. Somerset were set an easy 108 to win and, though they lost Neil Edwards for 5, leg before offering no stroke, Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer set off in exhilarating style. Langer carved a huge six out of the ground as the left-handers took a particular fancy to Usman Afzaal, who conceded 12 in one over. Afzaal removed Langer for a 30-ball 46, but Trescothick’s 42 saw Somerset home with ease.Kent’s match against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl dribbled to a draw, as rain once again played a major part with the day’s play abandoned shortly after Hampshire were made to follow-on. With 185 lost to the weather, a result was never likely. Hampshire started the day on a precarious 130 for 5, but were given hope of surviving with Dimitri Mascarenhas, in typically bullish mood, making 45. Once he fell to Azhar Mahmood, however, the rest folded quickly and Hampshire were bowled out for 215. Mahmood finished with 3 for 21 while Amjad Khan, playing in his first Championship match for nearly two years, picked up 2 for 28. Michael Carberry and Michael Brown endured some tricky moments when they batted again before the rain returned midway through the afternoon.Click here for the full report from Headingley where Yorkshire’s match against Lancashire ended in a predictable draw.

Eoin Morgan, though, kept his nerve and beat the dying light as Middlesex wrapped up their first win of the season.

Kirsten seeks rotation policy for injury-prone India

The season has barely begun for India and the coach, Gary Kirsten, has already sounded out the need for a rotation system for the injury-prone fast bowlers

The season has barely begun for India and the coach, Gary Kirsten, has already sounded out the need for a rotation system for the injury-prone fast bowlers. With Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan ruled out at start of the tournament and Irfan Pathan rested for the next two games with a side strain, all of a sudden the threatening pace-bowling attack doesn’t look so impressive. There is no doubt the team is overworked and a big season follows – the Sri Lanka tour just after the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy, home series against Australia and England, followed by tours of New Zealand and Pakistan. Looking at the schedule, it sounds silly to have somebody like Ishant Sharma playing almost every single insignificant ODI in the harshest of conditions. Kirsten, after a taxing three-hour training session at the National Bank of Punjab (NBP) Stadium, clarified to some extent the tired players’ perspective.”The system needs to create that [rotation policy], and it is unfair to expect the player himself to ask to be rested as he is also worried if his replacement does well, then he will lose his place,” Kirsten said. “So we need a rotation system in which if we rest a bowler, and if his replacement does well he still remains the No. 1 bowler and gets his place back.”Test cricket is tough with bowlers bowling around 25 overs a day in three to four Tests, and it is tough.”This could see Ishant sitting out an odd game, just like he did against Bangladesh in Mirpur. “We have got to be careful with the bowlers, some of these guys have played a lot of cricket and we need to make sure that they are physically fresh, fit and ready.” Kirsten said. “We certainly cannot expect every bowler to play throughout the year.”It could lead to a similar scenario like that of resting Irfan even before an actual big injury happens. “He has got a little bit of stiffness, it’s more of a precautionary break. We are not going to push him.” Kirsten said. “We will most probably give him a break for the next couple of games so that the side strain heals well.”Meanwhile, the Indian team practised pretty merrily for three hours under the harsh sun – that too about 13 hours after their previous training session finished. The batsmen hit big, and threatened to hit the journalists watching from the sidelines, with the white ball being difficult to spot during the day. Suresh Raina even broke a glass down the ground.Yusuf Pathan, in yesterday’s practice session, worked on the reverse-sweep and switch-hit for about 20 minutes. “We are always looking at new ways of playing the game,” Kirsten said. “Pick up new ideas, new shot-making, just trying to improve the game by five to 10%, and that can make all the difference. It is not something that he might do in the next game. It is some of the new things that we are trying to do, not just with him but with all the players.”We were doing this even before this thing came up [with Kevin Pietersen employing the shot against New Zealand]. We are trying things all the time and that’s the way cricket is going. We are trying to innovate and that’s the way it is.”

O técnico colocou o peso do resultado no árbitro argentino, Germán Delfino.
