Everton: Benitez undecided on Andre Gomes

It’s ‘by no means a certainty’ that Andre Gomes will leave Everton in this summer’s transfer window, The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe reports.

The lowdown

The Liverpool Echo claimed last week that Liga NOS outfit Benfica had enquired about the possibility of signing Gomes. For Everton, it’s a move which could ‘help free up vital space in the wage bill’.

According to Spotrac, Gomes is the third-highest earner on the club’s books, taking home just over £112,000 per week. Only Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne, two other former Barcelona players, earn more.

Everton paid £22m to sign Gomes permanently at the end of a loan spell in 2018/19. He still has three years left on the deal he penned.

The 27-year-old played 28 Premier League games under Carlo Ancelotti last season and averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.1 dribbles and two accurate long balls per match (via WhoScored).

The latest

O’Keeffe says that Ancelotti’s successor Rafael Benitez is keen to ‘give everyone a fair chance’ to prove themselves and, as such, has yet to reach a verdict on whether he wants Gomes to be part of his squad.

However, the report does caution that more ‘high-earning low contributors’ will have to be sold during the window following the departure of Bernard. At present, Gomes’ value stands at £15m.

The verdict

If Everton truly want to become consistent qualifiers for Europe, the revolution must start from within. They need to shed the players who simply haven’t delivered, and Gomes – who has just one goal from 81 appearances for the club – is among them.

These sales could then fund genuinely impactful additions, building on the success the Toffees enjoyed last summer with Ben Godfrey, Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Rodriguez and Allan.

If Benitez wants to leave a bigger mark than his predecessors in the Goodison Park dugout, than he’ll have to be ruthless in trimming his squad.

E o comandante alvinegro aprovou a atuação do seu time reserva no decorrer do clássico.

Jair citou o aprendizado adquirido.

– Naquele dia, fizemos um jogo similar. Abrimos o 2 a 0 no primeiro tempo.

Ball: Rangers target Veerman’s Heerenveen price tag is too high

Former Rangers defender Michael Ball believes that Heerenveen must drop the price tag of Joey Veerman.

Veerman has been linked with a move to Ibrox this summer, with the Scottish Sun reporting that the Dutchman has hit out at the club’s £8million valuation of him.

This is something which Ball agrees with, telling Transfer Tavern: “Unfortunately the big teams aren’t willing to pay that. They’ve got to drop it, Glasgow Rangers won’t be paying nine, ten million pounds, I don’t think they’ve got that money to pay for a young kid right now.”

22-year-old Veerman was in good form for Heerenveen last season, scoring nine goals and setting up another 11 in all competitions for the Eredivisie outfit.

The Dutchman also offers a lot of versatility as he can operate from defensive midfield, central midfield, left midfield and also further forward in an attacking midfield role, as per Transfermarkt.

Manager Steven Gerrard has already begun strengthening his team this summer, with Fashion Sakala, Nnamdi Ofoborh and John Ludstram all arriving at Ibrox, and after guiding Rangers to their first league title in a decade last season, Gerrard will be looking to get his recruitment spot on and ensure that Rangers are competing once again next season.

Surrey forced to work for their wickets

Nick Knight and Jim Troughton did their best to frustrate Surrey’s drive to win their third Championship title in four seasons, but the leaders still held their own on the first day at Edgbaston

Stephen Lamb27-Aug-2002Nick Knight and Jim Troughton did their best to frustrate Surrey’s drive to win their third Championship title in four seasons, but the leaders still held their own on the first day at Edgbaston. Knight made a steady 74 and Troughton a brisk 61 as the hosts ended the day on 300 for nine. Saqlain Mushtaq continued his magnificent run of form, with four for 88 for the visitors.Somerset’s hopes of lifting themselves away from the relegation zone haven’t improved, as they suffered a batting collapse after bowling Lancashire out for 251 at Old Trafford. Richard Johnson (six for 47) was the hosts’ main tormentor, while Andrew Caddick also took two wickets. Stuart Law made a brisk 77 and Chris Schofield 40 in an otherwise lacklustre batting effort. 20-year-old James Anderson then impressed again with two wickets as Somerset’s top order was swept away. At the close they were 91 for five.Anthony McGrath took a career-best four for 49 as Yorkshire, another side threatened with the drop, bowled Hampshire out for 269 at The Rose Bowl. Veterans Robin Smith (58) and Shaun Udal (40) starred for the hosts, and Udal then took a wicket as Yorkshire ended the day on 53 for two in reply, with Matthew Elliott unbeaten on 30.Leicestershire had the better of the first day against Sussex at Grace Road. Devon Malcolm took five for 38 as the visitors folded for 215, despite 62 from Robin Martin-Jenkins and 60 from Chris Adams. James Kirtley then broke through in the first over of the hosts’ reply to dismiss Trevor Ward, and at stumps Leicestershire were 50 for two.In Division Two, leaders Middlesex recovered from a disastrous start at New Road, after Kabir Ali (five for 70) had reduced them to 25 for three. But Ed Joyce (125) and Sven Koenig (81) added 142 for the fourth wicket before the fightback was completed by David Nash (67*) and Paul Weekes (46). Middlesex closed on 374 for seven.Jason Gallian kept Nottinghamshire’s promotion hopes alive with an unbeaten 162 against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay. Gallian shared an opening stand of 172 with Guy Welton (92), and Usman Afzaal chimed in with 40 as the visitors reached 325 for three at stumps. Only Michael Kasprowicz shone for the hosts, with two for 42 off his 25 overs.Durham’s wooden spoon credentials were enhanced as they subsided for 240 against Northants at Chester-le-Street. Australian quickie Mathew Inness (four for 60) did the bulk of the damage. No one managed a half-century; Nick Phillips (47) was nearest. Although Steve Harmison managed one breakthrough for the hosts, Northants ended the day handily placed at 60 for one.

Aí comecei a correr e começou a dar umas pontadas.

Graham Roberts says Gary Cahill would be super Rangers signing

Graham Roberts reckons that former England defender Gary Cahill would be an excellent addition to the Rangers squad.

The 35-year-old is a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Crystal Palace and is currently looking for a new club after rejecting their recent offer.

And Cahill, who’s made 394 Premier League appearances across spells with Aston Villa, Bolton, Chelsea, and Palace, is on Rangers’ radar according to The Sun, and they are willing to offer him £35,000-per-week.

Steven Gerrard’s side are on the back of their first Scottish Premiership triumph for 10 years, with their title-winning campaign earning them a place in the Champions League.

However, the Gers still must navigate their way through two qualifying rounds – starting with a two-legged tie against Malmo – to reach the group stages.

But the 6 ft 4 Cahill has plenty of experience in the competition and famously won the trophy with Chelsea back in 2012, meaning he would surely be a fantastic asset to Gerrard’s youthful squad.

Roberts exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“It would be a good move for him. They need a bit of experience there, he’s a free agent, so to go and play in the Scottish Premiership, he would.

“They have a young side, but if you’ve got an experienced centre-half at the back he could be the orchestrator. I think that would be a great move for him, and he would be great for the squad.”

Chief Selector Wasim Bari tackles the press

Article: Agha Akbar on Pak team selections

Agha Akbar26-Oct-2002LAHORE – Waqar Younis retained his captaincy, Wasim Akram made a partial comeback along with another brace of walking wounded, while Saeed Anwar and two to three youngsters were consigned to the wilderness again as chief selector Wasim Bari announced two separate squads for the longer and limited-overs versions of the game for the month-long tour of Zimbabwe here on Saturday. This is the first instance of Pakistan naming two separate outfits for Tests and one-dayers, but surprisingly the squad for Tests has 15 members and the limited-overs 16 – which is normally the other way round. In another strange and possibly dubious departure from tradition one must say, Wasim Bari along with fellow selectors Abdul Raqeeb and Shafiq Papa chose to name the team in front of the media, instead of wiring a press release. In the noisy question and answer session, the selectors were heckled no end by many a cricket correspondent, on occasions with rudeness bordering on belligerence. But the grilling was to be expected. For one, the team has mostly been on the receiving end for a spell now, plummeting to a whitewash against the Aussies in the just-concluded Test series, and secondly, this was the first opportunity in recent memory that the avid cricket hacks had an opportunity to have a face-to-face go at the selectors. To his credit, Bari – not really known for spunk or spine – didn’t lose his poise, though given the provocation one would have forgiven him if he had. Defending his record – when he was asked as to why he didn’t resign after the team’s dismal showing, Bari’s refrain mostly was that the selection committee’s term of reference was to choose the best available, and not how they were handled on tour or how they performed. The rationale sounded a bit hollow, when in the same breath he mentioned with discernible degree of self-satisfaction that Pakistan had only recently defeated Australia in Australia in the Super Challenge Series. What happened afterwards? Bari’s reasoning was that a fitness problem to too many players combined with poor strategy on tours was the cause of rapid decline, and not the sinister insinuations of infighting, politicking and insolence of the captain. “For the Test series, we were forced to make six changes. If the Australians had made as many instead, they too would have posted similar results”.Though naming the skipper is not the preserve of the selection committee, this being the PCB Chairman’s exclusive domain, the sword of Damocles hanging over Waqar Younis was removed mostly because of lack of a viable option; Inzamam-ul-Haq returned as his deputy. Shahid Afridi finally gets the nod to open the innings in both Tests and one-dayers with Saleem Elahi being the third, surprise induction. Since Elahi hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary to merit a recall, if Anwar was not to be reconsidered, then it was in the fitness of things to retain faith in either of the two Imrans – Nazir or Farhat. Despite the odd flaw in technique and temperament, the two openers sharing their first name are too talented to remain out of contention for long before getting spots at the top of the order. But the selectors, in spite of Bari’s claim that he believed in giving an extended run to the young prospects, were apparently at the end of their tether with Nazir and Farhat.Though Bari said that the selectors would continue to have an ‘open mind’ regarding the seniors, it indeed seemed curtains for Saeed Anwar (whose fitness, form and ability to pass muster in the field was quite suspect in the eyes of selectors). Though Akram too has been named only for the one-dayers – this being his preference for the moment with making the 2003 World Cup squad and taking his tally to beyond 500 wickets being the declared aims – the possibility of the celebrated southpaw playing in Tests remains rather remote. The middle order looks a whole lot more robust with the return of Inzamam and Yousuf Youhana with Younis Khan, Faisal Iqbal and Hasan Raza holding on to their spots in Tests, with the last named replaced with Misbah-ul-Haq in the one-dayers. The pace attack is four-pronged in Tests, and three-pronged with a seaming all-rounder (Azhar Mahmood) coming in for one-dayers at Mohammad Sami’s expense.Another surprise is naming Kamran Akmal as an under-study for wicket-keeper Rashid Latif. With nothing much to write home about in the ‘A’ matches against Sri Lanka and in the one trial game on Friday, Moin hadn’t really helped his own cause.”This team is a nice blend of experience and youth, and we expect that it would do well in Zimbabwe”, said Bari. They better do that, to retain some modicum of faith in Pakistan cricket. The schedule:
After a three-day tour opener from November 3 against Zimbabwe A, Pakistan is to feature in two Tests and five-one-dayers, the last of which would be played on December 1. The first Test is in Harare, from November 9-13 while the second is to be played at Bulawayo from November 16-20.The same two are the venues for one-dayers, with Bulawayo hosting two on successive days (November 23 and 24) and Harare three (November 27, 30 and December 1).After this series, Pakistan would cross over to South Africa for an identical number of Tests and one-dayers, scheduled for December and January but for that selectors want to tinker with both the teams, saying the teams for the South African leg would be announced later.Test Squad:
Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul Haq (vice captain), Taufeeq Umar, Shahid Afridi, Saleem Elahi, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Faisal Iqbal, Hasan Raza, Rashid Latif, Kamran Akmal, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Zahid and Mohammad Sami.One-day Squad:
Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul Haq (vice captain), Shahid Afridi, Taufeeq Umar, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Misbah-ul-Haq, Saleem Elahi, Rashid Latif, Saqlain Mushtaq, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Zahid, Faisal Iqbal, Azhar Mahmood and Kamran Akmal.
