Cidermen beaten by the weather as Surrey game ends as a draw

Somerset were once again beaten by the weather when their championship match against Surrey at The Oval ended in a rather disappointing draw

Richard Walsh27-May-2002Somerset were once again beaten by the weather when their championship match against Surrey at The Oval ended in a rather disappointing draw.Having lost the whole of Sunday to the rain Surrey resumed their second innings on 86 for 3, and were eventually all out in late afternoon for 332 leaving the Cidermen needing an unlikely 300 runs for victory from a minimum of 20 overs. With the Somerset score on 45 for 1 after 10 overs the game was called off, to leave the visitors contemplating what might have been had the weather not intervened yet again and deprived them of an opportunity of getting a result. After the close of play Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "The boys tried hard, but the weather won again. We competed well but just couldn’t keep the breakthroughs going today."He concluded: "If we hadn’t lost that day then we would have got a result, but I’m pleased with the way that it went."Somerset will be staying in London this evening before making the long journey north tomorrow ready to face the Yorkshire Cricket Board on Wednesday.

Lange must avoid John McGinn disaster

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Dean Windass has claimed that should Jack Grealish leave Aston Villa this summer, then the Midlands club won’t also sell fellow midfield star John McGinn.

Speaking to FFC, Windass said:

“Certainly, Dean Smith won’t want to lose him if Jack goes, no chance. If Grealish does go then Dean will have to hold on to a lot of players and then bring some more in, but I can’t see McGinn leaving.”

After an incredible season for club and country, Grealish has been linked with an eye-watering £100m move to Manchester City, so if the talismanic captain were to leave, Villa would certainly not be low on funds, and therefore, they shouldn’t feel the need to sell McGinn.

The Scotland international has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks after another impressive season in the top-flight, where he was once again a mainstay in Dean Smith’s side.

The 26-year-old would feature 37 times in the top-flight, contributing three goals and five assists, averaging an impressive 6.88/10 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This was enough to rank him as the seventh-best performer at Villa Park last season, so it is clear that he is an extremely important member of Smith’s squad, and it would be a devastating blow if he were to follow Grealish out of the door.

Villa fans would certainly be frustrated if, after a promising summer of investment thus far, two of the key players from Villa’s squad in recent seasons were both to depart ahead of the start of the 2021/22 campaign, where the Villans look a safe bet to challenge in the top half of the Premier League table.

McGinn has also established himself as a fan favourite for both club and country, with former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan singing his praises in 2020, saying:

“John McGinn is a top, top player – do you know why? He’s a top, top man.”

It would be a disastrous decision by sporting director Johan Lange to allow both Grealish and McGinn to depart this summer, so fans will be praying that if their captain does depart, that at worst, it ensures that McGinn remains an Aston Villa player next season.

And, in other news… Dean Smith receives huge Jack Grealish boost

West Brom dealt Kyle Bartley transfer blow

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a blow in their bid to keep Kyle Bartley at The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Telegraph (via Football League World), who claim that both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the Albion centre-back ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

The report continues by stating that, with the 30-year-old now entering the final year of his current deal with the Baggies, an offer of around £3m should be enough to convince the Championship side to part with the defender this summer.

Fans will be worried

It is unsurprising to learn of the Premier League interest in Bartley, as, despite the fact West Brom suffered relegation back to the second tier last season, the former England U17 international nevertheless impressed from the centre of the Albion defence.

Indeed, over his 30 Premier League appearances, the £2.25m-rated man helped his side keep four clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 5.3 clearances and winning 4.8 duels per game.

Bartley also impressed in an attacking capacity, scoring three goals, providing one assist and creating two big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 0.2 key passes per league fixture.

These returns saw the man Chris Lepkowski dubbed a “brilliant” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as the Baggies’ sixth-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, if the club were to lose the services of the £15k-per-week centre-back this summer, it would not only come as a blow to Ismael, as the 45-year-old would then be faced with the challenging task of replacing the 30-year-old ahead of next season, but it would also be gutting for fans of the club, who would almost certainly miss seeing the tough-tackling defender in action at The Hawthorns.

SPCL 2 – Services go top as Academy dent Easton's record

Easton & Martyr Worthy’s unbeaten spell as early season Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 leaders is over after a 46-run defeat by the Hampshire Academy

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)03-Jun-2002Easton & Martyr Worthy’s unbeaten spell as early season Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 leaders is over after a 46-run defeat by the Hampshire Academy. They lost top spot to United Services, who inched a point ahead after whipping Hungerford by seven wickets at Portsmouth Grammar School. But Easton, who lost control of affairs in a key three-over spell immediately before tea, showed just why they had made such a bright start to the season.A three-wicket spell by new West Indian army recruit Keith Brewster (3-52) had the Academy wobbling at 62-4 (Iain Brunnschweiler 34).The Young Hawks, parading four Under-17s in their top six, were revived by Lawrie Prittipaul (63) and Tom Burrows (30), who doubled the score before Steve Green (3-42) broke through.Ian Hilsum (21) took the total on to 192-7, but when Luke Merry (24) and James Schofield took 30 runs off the final three overs, the Academy were sitting pretty at 230-7.Fresh from four straight wins, Easton needed one of their top five to make a big score – but it did not materialise. They dipped to 50-4 and 82-5 before Brewster’s defiant 47 boosted their flagging fortunes. But Prittipaul (3-37) ripped out the middle-order, leaving Easton to taste their first defeat at 184-9.United Services leapfrogged into pole position, overhauling Hungerford’s 175-8 to win by seven wickets at Hilsea. Owen Dawkins (67) and Steve Wyatt (35) top scored in Hungerford’s 175-8.But a century second-wicket partnership between Portsmouth University students James Robson (65) and Tom Clark (59 not out) guided US to within sight of an important victory.Fourth-wicket pair Tim Richings (66 not out) and Andy Heyes (62 not out) shared an unbroken century partnership to guide Sparsholt to a third successive win over Lymington at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground.Having bowled Lymington out for 181, Sparsholt were 68-3 when Richings and Heyes came together.Left-armer Mike Ball (4-23) shone for Sparsholt, removing openers Aaron Heal (23) and Glyn Treagus before Ben Craft (58), supported by Martin Hunt (26) and Matt Malloy (22), provided the bulk of Lymington’s runs.Winchester KS moved off the bottom for the first time this season after Paul Marks (37 not out) and Raj Naik (27 not out) set up a six-wicket win over Rowledge at River Park.Basement new boys Rowledge struggled for runs after being put into bat and were dismissed for 128, with teenage spinner Rhys Oxley (4-26) cutting through the lower order.Chris Yates (2-29) and David Lloyd (2-24) shared the spoils as Winchester slipped to 79-4 before Marks and Naik set up a second consecutive win.Old Tauntonians & Romsey tailenders Jeff Stothert (21) and Mukesh Morjaria (13 not out) put on 28 in a frantic last-wicket stand before Trojans all-rounder Paul Douglas broke the partnership off the penultimate ball to force a 141-run each tie at Romsey.Trojans 141 all out (Mario Mohamed 54) appeared a long way off when the pair came together at 113-9 with OTs facing probable defeat. But OTs, who had earlier dipped to 49-6 against Douglas (4-28) and Jamie Donaldson (2-29), rallied through Jeremy Ord (26) and Stothert. They were on the brink of an unexpected victory at 141-9 when, two balls from the end, Douglas had Stothert caught at cover by Mohamed.
