PCB hopeful BCCI top brass will attend Lahore ACC meeting

Pakistan has expressed the hope that India would attend the forthcoming meeting of the cash rich Asian Cricket Council, scheduled to be held in Lahore on May 25

05-May-2001Pakistan has expressed the hope that India would attend the forthcoming meeting of the cash rich Asian Cricket Council, scheduled to be held in Lahore on May 25. “We are confident that a delegation of the BCCI would be in Lahore for the meeting which has three very important points on its agenda,” ACC Secretary Zakir Hussain Sayed told the local media in Karachi yesterday.Invitations for the meeting have been sent to all the member Boards, including India and their response was awaited, he said. The agenda for the meeting includes finalisation of the Cricket development programme in the region for which ICC has granted $6.4 million. “It is a very important meeting by all counts. We have to give final shape to our programmes so that ACC starts becoming more effective and decisive,” he said.Despite an overt expression of optimism, Pakistan Cricket Board officials were keeping their fingers crossed as they were not too sure whether BCCI leaders, AC Muthiah and Jagmohan Dalmiya, who currently heads the Asian Cricket Development Fund, could make it to the meeting in light of the “stand off” between the BCCI and Sports Minister Uma Bharti. The ACC is currently headed by PCB Chairman Lt. Gen Tauqir Zia,who, in anger cancelled the scheduled ACC meeting in Sharjah last month as a tit for tat response to the Indian decision not to play against Pakistan.Initially, the PCB chief also threatened to boycott India in all the international matches. But after the angry outbursts, Zia considerably retracted stating that any decision by the PCB had to be approved by the Pakistan Government.Pakistan military ruler Gen Parvez Musharraf too has said in interviews that he preferred the resumption of the Indo-Pak cricket series, which in turn could pave the way for improvement in bilateral relations. With tensions between India and Pakistan continuing, PCB officials now feel that the ACC too is destined to go the seven-nation SAARC way, which was caught in the quagmire of Indo-Pak rivalry, PCB officials said.Zakir Syed said indications were that both Muthiah and Dalmiya, would be in Lahore for the meeting. “Even the Sri Lankans would be represented as two very important programmes have to be finalised.” He said the PCB has finalised the Asia Cup and Asian Test Championship programmes. A copy of the development programme of the ACC has been sent to the International Cricket Council Development Manager Andrew Eade. “Obviously, we would be looking to implement our development programme in cooperation with the ICC.”The PCB has scheduled two matches of the Asian Test Championship involving the Pakistan team against Bangladesh and India in September. A final decision on dates and venues would be taken at the May 25 meeting, he said.

“Continuar trabalhando sempre e importante!!!

Cook to sanction Downes sale

A major update has emerged on Paul Cook’s transfer plans this summer, regarding defensive midfielder Flynn Downes.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Championship side Barnsley are interested in a deal to sign Ipswich midfielder Flynn Downes this summer. Barnsley are said to be preparing an offer for the Englishman after being impressed with his displays for the Blues in League One.

The report claims that Ipswich manager Paul Cook is willing to cash in on Downes and would not stand in his way if a reasonable bid came in for his services. Downes is heading into the final year of his contract at Portman Road and Barnsley are looking to pounce on the 22-year-old.

Back in 2019, former Ipswich midfielder Matt Holland hailed the “outstanding” midfielder for his performances for the club under Paul Lambert. He told Ipswich’s website, as relayed by the EADT:

“Flynn is a player I’ve known for quite a long time because my son did a bit of training with the academy and I did a bit of coaching here as well.

“Straight away he was one who caught my eye and he was only 10 or 11 years old. I thought he had the temperament and character to go a long way, as well as the ability and talent of course.

“He’s proving that again this season and I think he’s been absolutely outstanding – a key player for Paul Lambert.”

Fans will be livid

Ipswich fans will be livid at this news for several reasons.

Downes is a long-time servant to Ipswich and has been at the club since he was seven, joining the academy in 2006 and making his first-team debut in 2017 against Birmingham in the Championship. T

his means that Cook could be about to let one of the club’s academy products go, which could anger fans who are attached to local players more than those who come in from other clubs in England or from abroad.

Downes has also been a shining light on the pitch for Ipswich. The 22-year-old averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 6.98 in 10 starts as a defensive midfielder in League One. He averaged 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game for Ipswich, which is skewed by seven substitute appearances lowering his numbers.

That shows that he is adept at winning the ball back for his side. Therefore, he is a quality defensive midfield option at this level and could be a key player for Cook next season if he remains in Suffolk.

The £2.3k-per-week beast has plenty of room to improve at such a young age. Downes turned 22 in January and could be a player with more scope for development, but Ipswich fans will not be able to watch that happen at Portman Road if Cook sells him this summer.

They could miss out on potentially watching him flourish as a player and that could leave Ipswich fans livid at this sale if it goes through as reported, which is why Cook is headed for a disaster with this decision.

Sri Lanka management defend Muralitharan after Holding comments

Sri Lanka’s team management have been forced to defend the bowling action ofSri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan again after fresh doubts werecast upon his action by International Cricket Council (ICC) bowling advisorMichael Holding

CricInfo07-Mar-2002Sri Lanka’s team management have been forced to defend the bowling action ofSri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan again after fresh doubts werecast upon his action by International Cricket Council (ICC) bowling advisorMichael Holding.Holding, commenting in April’s issue of Wisden Cricket Asia Monthly, claimedto be in “110% agreement” with former Indian spin bowler Bishen Bedi, wholast month likened Muralitharan’s action to that of a javelin thrower.”The laws are very specific,” said Holding. “A bowler’s arm, once it gets toshoulder height, should stay straight until delivery.”If it’s bent, then it should remain bent to the same degree and shouldnever alter. The law says nothing about hyper-extended bent or abnormalbent.”The Sri Lankan team management are disappointed that the issue ofMuralitharan’s action has resurfaced nearly three years after being clearedby an ICC panel of bowling experts, when video evidence showed his bowlingarm to be permanently bent due to a congenital deformity.”Bedi’s remarks are really disappointing and disturbing,” Sri Lanka captainSanath Jayasuriya said. “He should not have said that after Muralitharan’saction was cleared by the International Cricket Council.”Jayasuriya believes that Muralitharan, who took 80 wickets last year in 12Test matches and reached 400 Test wickets in record time, is suffering nowbecause of his recent success.”It is an attempt to trigger disturbance for a bowler who has beenperforming excellently,” said JayasuriyaSri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore also believes Bedi’s comments to be unwarrantedbut doubts whether they will have an impact on Muralitharan.”It disappointed us no end but Muralitharan is a great fighter and a greatbowler so he would not be distracted by such remarks,” Whatmore said.New team manager Chandra Schaffter criticised Bedi for stirring controversy.”Not very many people take Bedi seriously, I think he thrives oncontroversies and that’s his style,” Schaffter said.”I don’t see any problems for Muralitharan in future as far as his bowlingaction is concerned.”

Leeds set to offer Bamford long-term deal

Leeds United will look to tie down Patrick Bamford to a new long-term deal this summer, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Bamford excels for Leeds

The Whites had a number of star performers last season as Marcelo Bielsa’s side sealed a hugely impressive ninth-placed finish back in the Premier League.

It was Bamford who arguably shone more than anyone, however, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists in the league as he led the line superbly.

The 27-year-old’s current deal expires next summer, so the need to extend his stay at Elland Road is pressing.

The Latest: Long-term deal in the offing

According to Smyth’s latest report, Leeds offering Bamford a new deal is ‘an item on the agenda’ this summer as they look to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.

It is also mentioned that ‘one or two others’ could also agree new contracts which would then ‘reflect their Premier League status’.

The Verdict: No-brainer for Bielsa

Giving Bamford a new deal would make perfect sense for Leeds, with the striker such an influential member of this Whites team.

At 27, he is a player at the peak of his powers, and that should remain that way for a few more years, especially considering that pace isn’t a key aspect of his game.

The hope is that he will find a similar level to his excellent 2020/21 form for the foreseeable future, proving that he is far more than a one-season wonder at Premier League level.

Vamos tentar trazer 40, 50 mil pessoas para empurrar o time.
