Nottingham Forest suffered a costly defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to a slender loss to Luton Town at the City Ground.

The loss is particularly worrying considering that Chris Hughton’s men are now just 11 points clear of the relegation zone, with sides below them having as many three matches in hand.

However, there were signs throughout the clash that could give the club reason to be optimistic in avoiding relegation to League One.

Manager Hughton was impressed with how his side managed to create opportunities. Following the game, he said that Forest were “very good”, having some presentable chances to open the scoring before the break.

The statistics agree with that sentiment, with the hosts having had 19 shots throughout the game, forcing Luton stopper Simon Sluga into four saves.

The fact that Forest were creating opportunities is a positive sign. It is, in fact, something that they have managed throughout the majority of the campaign.

At their current rate, the East Midlands side are taking 11.6 shots per game according to WhoScored, which is in fact the sixth-highest in the Championship.

Of course, that does not mean all too much if the team are just attempting pot shots from distance, which to an extent is true. Approximately 40% of Forest’s shots this season have come from outside of the penalty area – only Reading, Barnsley and Huddersfield Town have a higher percentage.

However, judging by the expected goals model (xG), Hughton’s men are actually creating very presentable chances.

They currently possess an xG count of 40.07 which is dramatically higher than their number of actual goals scored, 28.

That disparity in these numbers can come down to one of two aspects: poor fortune i.e. excellent stops from opposition goalkeepers or indeed, poor finishing.

Whilst that poor finishing could potentially hamper Forest for the rest of the season, there will hopefully come a point where the chances indeed start finding the back of the net with more regularity, swiftly moving the club away from the drop zone. After all, they are certainly more creative than any of their relegation rivals.

Hughton’s men just need to keep generating chances at the rate they currently are and their luck in front of goal will hopefully turn.

وتابع: “أرشح أيضًا السنغال والمغرب، ومن الممكن أن تتفوق المنتخبات التي تأهلت إلى المرحلة النهائية من تصفيات كأس العالم 2022”.

وأضاف في النهاية: “السنغال بإمكانياتها الهائلة، تونس باستقرارها، شباب منتخب مالي، مواهب نيجيريا وكذلك الكاميرون مع العلم أن الأخير سيلعب على أرضه أمام جمهوره”.

Celtic have offered Kyle Joseph a long-term deal ahead of the expiry of his Wigan Athletic contract, according to Football Insider.

The report claimed that the Hoops have submitted a formal offer to the 19-year-old striker in a bid to stave off growing competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, who are understood to be waiting on a character assessment before they step-up their interest.

The deal would apparently involve a £300,000 compensation payment to Wigan, who sit second from bottom in League One.

Who is Celtic target Kyle Joseph?

Joseph graduated from the Latics’ under-18s to the under-23s last season and this term he has made his first team breakthrough (via Transfermarkt). He has been handed 14 appearances in League One, 12 of which were starts, and scored five goals. Most notably, he netted a hat-trick in a 4-3 away win at Burton Albion just before the turn of the year.

According to WhoScored, Joseph’s predominant strengths lie in his dribbling and his finishing. However, he is currently out of action after injuring his back.

Transfer Tavern verdict

This could be another shrewd move from Celtic after they captured 19-year-old Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Liam Shaw on a pre-contract agreement in February (via Yorkshire Live) – a move with echoes of the potential deal for Joseph on a similar arrangement and at a similar age.

Deals like this enable the Hoops to build for the future with minimal expense, and it is always a good sign when there are high-profile competitors for a deal – once they can be seen off, of course.

If Spurs to make an offer of their own, it may come down to who can provide Joseph with the clearer and more exciting vision of his future.

Lots of Everton fans have been left to slam Alex Iwobi after he posted a subtle dig at Carlo Ancelotti on his latest Instagram story.

The story was shared by The Toffee Blues on their Twitter page, as the Nigeria international wrote: ‘Always an honour to get a call up for my national team, hopefully I get to play in my preferred position’.

This has been taken as a subtle dig at Ancelotti by several members of the Goodison Park faithful, who played the former Arsenal man as a right wing-back in their most recent 2-0 loss away at Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday evening, and has played him there on more than one occasion so far in the 2020/21 term.

Predominantly a winger by trade, Iwobi is clearly not happy with playing a wing-back role, as he is asked to defend more rather than showcasing his attacking talent in full force.

Nonetheless, it is a concern that should not really be put in the public domain and thus should be kept behind closed doors instead.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has exclusively told Football FanCast that the lack of supporters should benefit Lee Johnson’s team in Sunday’s Papa John’s Trophy final on Sunday.

The Black Cats face League Two high-flyers Tranmere Rovers at Wembley, just under two years since they were beaten by Portsmouth on penalties in front of a competition-record crowd of 85,000 following a dramatic 2-2 draw in normal time.

However, the game will be played behind closed doors to keep in line with Government guidelines, and whilst Phillips has urged Sunderland’s players to treat it as just another match, he believes that the lack of pressure from the Stadium of Light faithful should help Johnson’s in-form outfit.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Yes, it’s a cup final, but it’s another match. They should treat it like it’s another league match. They were great against Portsmouth the other night, they’re full of confidence, but it’s just another football match, go and win the football match.

“Forget about the occasion, I think it’ll be made easier that there isn’t going to be 80,000-odd there like there was against Portsmouth two years ago, there’s no pressure from the supporters.

“They should treat it like a normal match. If they win, of course, brilliant, they get a trophy, and then they can kick on for the last 12 games of the season.”

Despite Sunderland going great guns in their race for League One promotion, Phillips is wary of Tranmere’s threat. He added:

“Let’s not forget they’re coming up against a bang in-form Tranmere side. Keith Hill has done a great job, so it’ll be a tough match.”
