Gareth Southgate announced a 27-man squad for his side’s upcoming games against Montenegro and Kosovo, and although reports have suggested that Jack Grealish’s fitness have played a part in the Aston Villa midfielder’s exclusion from selection, even if the 24-year-old had been fit, the England boss would have been right to omit him from his squad.

Much has been made of Grealish’s start to the 2019/20 campaign after having captained his boyhood club to promotion via the Championship play-offs and granted, the skilful playmaker has impressed at times, scoring two goals and registering three assists.

But when you consider that these numbers are a replica of Anwar El Ghazi’s attacking output so far this season, has Grealish really been impressing for Dean Smith’s side?

The midfielder’s ability to weave past players and contribute in the final third is well documented, with Villa having scored more goals this season than any other side in the bottom nine.

But when assessing where Grealish would fit within the complexion of the Three Lions’ squad, there is arguably no room for a player whose abilities are not directly aligned to producing attacking output.

The likes of Mason Mount and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be looking to secure themselves a starting berth in England’s midfield options, and when compared to the recently selected duo, it is difficult to state that Grealish offers more within the attacking spots.

Mount has already bagged four goals in 2019/20 while amassing a considerable 2.6 shots per game, via WhoScored. Oxlade-Chamberlain, on the other hand, has also scored four times. That’s from just six starts in all competitions.

Those at Villa may feel that any suggestion Grealish is ill-qualified for international duty is an unreasonable suggestion, given his influential role in his side’s ascendancy over the last two seasons, but the playmaker is not contributing with enough vigour and regularity to be considered a definite selection for England.

Whether Villa’s captain will make the cut for Euro 2020 remains to be seen, but on the basis of current form in the 2019/20 campaign, regardless of fitness, Southgate has made the right call in not selecting Grealish for November’s international break.

To be considered, he needs to do more.

The Argentine manager appeared to make the decision to shore things up at the back when he brought on Juan Foyth in the 70th minute and protect the one-goal advantage they had at that stage of the game, however supporters were far from impressed with the choice of substitution he made.

Whilst Dele Alli was the player to make way for the South American defender, a plethora of Spurs fans were left fuming with the fact that Eric Dier was left on the pitch and still had not been withdrawn from proceedings.

Indeed, the England international would remain on the pitch for the entirety of the game and could not help Tottenham from conceding a George Baldock goal and ultimately leave the match with just one of the three points that were on offer.

Judging by the statistics collected by WhoScored, the 25-year-old did not have the worst of games as he managed six clearances and won six aerial duels, although he did not manage a single tackle or interception, nor make a difference in an attacking sense.

However, that did not stop fans on Twitter from slamming Pochettino’s decision not to withdraw Dier, with many of them angry the defender remained.

Manchester United are set to launch another bid for Wilfried Zaha as they bid to re-sign the Crystal Palace attacker, per The Sun.

What’s the word?

United signed Zaha from Palace in 2013 but he struggled under the management of David Moyes, making just two substitute appearances in the league in 2013/14. He was eventually sold back to the Eagles in 2015.

However, the report claims that United lead the race for the Ivory Coast international and that they could launch a fresh offer next summer.

Any deal would cost around £70m; Zaha, of course, handed in a transfer request in the summer amid rumours of a move to either Arsenal or Everton but ended up staying at Selhurst Park.

Lazy scouting

Surely United can do better than merely going back in for a spare part that never had any real impact at Old Trafford?

The report claims that the club are crying out for his pace and creativity but they signed Daniel James in the summer from Swansea City for exactly that purpose.

On top of that, they also have the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. All three can be categorised as having both raw speed and creativity.

It’s easy, of course, for United to believe that Zaha would come running back at the drop of a hat because he potentially has something to prove.

And that could well be true. He made just four senior appearances for United.

But his form this season doesn’t exactly speak to a £70m asking price; he has yet to score in the Premier League and has provided just two assists.

Bringing him in would be a lazy bit of scouting from United and a potentially expensive mistake.

Comments from Adam Forshaw and Marcelo Bielsa in recent weeks made it seem as if Robbie Gotts was nearing the point where he would be deemed ready to make his first-team debut.

Indeed, the young midfielder looked set to be the next youngster in line for a shot at the senior squad, but what happened on Wednesday night may have set him and certainly a few others back.

Rather than being called up to first-team action, Gotts has remained in the U23 side, and it may be fair to say that Wednesday represented one of the worst evenings in the midfielder’s young career.

Indeed, the 20-year-old led his team out as captain as they were thrashed 7-1 by Derby’s U23 side on a sour night.

It was an all-round poor performance from Leeds’ youth team, but a lot of blame will have to rest with Carlos Corberan and his captain for the night as Gotts failed to galvanise his team while donning the armband.

The youngster seemingly wasn’t the greatest of leaders out on the pitch, and that doesn’t bode well for his chances of breaking into the first-team anytime soon. With Mateusz Bogusz and Alfie McCalmont missing through international duty, this was an ideal opportunity for him to step up and perform.

However, that failed to be the case. Instead, the midfielder would likely have been better off simply not playing on Wednesday too. Amidst many poor performers, his reputation won’t have been enhanced at all.

Of course, losing 7-1 is a team effort and the blame can’t solely lie on Gotts’ shoulders, but this result certainly doesn’t reflect well on him and it may have set his development within the squad back a little bit.

With Leeds looking for someone to step up and be counted, the youngster clearly still has a long way to go. He was one of the most experienced men in the side but his team simply wilted away without too many traces of improving.

And even though Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero was actually on the scoresheet that night, many Barcelona fans simply weren’t impressed by Kun’s overall performance.

The Argentine did miss a couple of clear-cut chances throughout the night and it seems that they don’t think he is good enough for the national team, unlike his spell for the Citizens under Pep Guardiola.

Many were saying he’s finished on the national stage and were even relieved the Blaugrana never signed him in the past – they reportedly wanted him in 2014 – as he is making Luis Suarez look good at the moment.
