According to a report in The Scottish Sun, Carlos Carvalhal is keen to become Celtic’s new manager and is ready to make his pitch to the club’s hierarchy this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Scottish Sun reports that the Portuguese boss is keen for another role in British football following spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City previously.

Neil Lennon is, of course, in the position right now on a caretaker basis following Brendan Rodgers’ exit earlier in 2019, and looked to be in a good position to take the job on a permanent basis having been unbeaten in the lead-up to the last Old Firm derby of the season on Sunday.

However, a disappointing display in the 2-0 defeat at Ibrox may well have affected the Northern Irishman’s chances slightly, although The Scottish Sun report that it is unclear whether that result will change things.

Would he be a good appointment?

In a word, no.

While he would certainly be an interesting arrival at Parkhead and is currently out of work and therefore wouldn’t cost any compensation money, Celtic have the perfect opportunity to aim a little higher this summer if they do choose to ditch Lennon.

While Carvalhal may well be a good friend of Jose Mourinho’s, he hasn’t proven during his time with either Wednesday or Swansea in British football that he can make a huge difference with the clubs he has taken charge of.

He failed to keep the latter in the Premier League and twice missed out on promotion with the former, suggesting he doesn’t have the leadership and quality required to be an upgrade on Lennon should he be given a chance.

Celtic are looking for a capable manager that can lead the club to nine and ten in a row, but the 53-year-old isn’t the man to do it.

With promotion to the Championship a failed goal for this season, Kenny Jackett could be set for a long summer.

Another season in League One will be disheartening for Portsmouth, and with many of Pompey’s key names being standout stars in the division this year it is likely there will be interest from teams around the country for Jackett’s players, and some are already starting to attract interest.

According to the Portsmouth News, interest in duo Matt Clarke and Jamal Lowe is heating up following their 1-0 aggregate defeat to Sunderland in the League One play-off semi-final, and for Clarke in particular, Jackett could find it hard to keep hold of his star defender.

The 22-year-old centre-back has been a standout in the league this season, playing every minute and scoring three goals along the way, and with one year remaining on his current deal, it could be wise for Portsmouth to cash in on Clarke now before it is too late.

A hard decision, granted, considering the fact he’s so good, but the club have to think about their financial future.

Valued at £180,000 on Transfermarkt, the former Ipswich Town academy product would demand a large transfer fee for any team looking to go in for Clarke this summer, and these funds will be important for Jackett in his pre-season plans to rebuild the team and acquire talent that can get Portsmouth over the promotion line next season.

Clarke has been a great servant for the south coast side and has developed into one of the top defensive talents in the Football League, but with only 12 months remaining on his contract, Portsmouth will be wise to cash in now on their defender for the good of their long-term future.

West Ham United goalkeeper Adrian could move to Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, per Goal.

What’s the word?

Football FanCast understands that Adrian is poised to depart the Hammers when his contract expires at the end of June.

He failed to make a single Premier League appearance in 2018-19, with Lukasz Fabianski, the club’s Hammer of the Year, instead emerging as Manuel Pellegrini’s No.1.

Adrian did play five times in cup competitions, captaining the side in the EFL Cup and featuring twice in the FA Cup.

And Goal now claim that he could make a shock move to Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League finalists, with the Reds in the market for a back-up goalkeeper.

Simon Mignolet is reportedly set to leave, leaving the club short in the position ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Damned if they do

West Ham have been left in an unenviable position here.

The Irons have found their first-choice goalkeeper in Fabianski; Adrian perhaps deserves better but it’s simply the nature of the beast.

The Spaniard has made exactly 150 appearances for the club but he now appears set to bring the curtain down with very little ceremony.

A move to Liverpool could see him yet again relegated to the bench, or he could step in when needed and help the Reds to silverware, leaving egg on the Irons’ faces.

Ultimately, though, they are damned if they keep a long-serving star who won’t ever play in the top-flight and damned if they let him leave without the send-off he deserves.

Vincent Janssen has been allowed to leave Tottenham Hotspur for his summer holidays, per Football.London.

What’s the word?

Manager Mauricio Pochettino gave the Dutch striker a small reprieve at the end of the season, giving him three Premier League appearances.

Janssen failed to score in any of them – he saw one header cleared off the line against West Ham United – and he has now been axed from the squad, despite them preparing for the Champions League final against Liverpool this weekend.

The 24-year-old has not been registered in Spurs’ European squad so will play no part against the Reds in Madrid.

But it is perhaps a surprise that he has been allowed to go on his holidays, with a number of young players helping the first-team stars prepare for the biggest game in the club’s history.

Janssen has endured a nightmare spell in north London, scoring just six times in 42 appearances.

Pochettino missing a trick

Janssen’s Spurs career is surely over.

He has never really fitted in, despite the £17million fee lavished upon him. But this feels like a missed trick from Pochettino.

The club’s first-team stars are currently training alongside the youth players as they attempt to sharpen themselves up ahead of the final in Spain.

Keeping Janssen around would surely have been just the ticket.

He is far more experienced than most of the youngsters in the squad – he was the top scorer in the Eredivisie prior to his switch to England – and he offers a different threat for the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez to deal with in training.

Unity is key at a time like this as well, with Spurs needing all hands on deck.

Simply telling Janssen to head to his sunbed feels like a mistake, even with his absolutely terrible form. He was never likely to play a part in the final; he could well have prepared the XI who will, though.

Everton are hoping to add players this summer that can take them into the European spots next season. With that in mind, Ryan Fraser would give them the attacking edge to help them achieve their goal.

The Bournemouth winger has played 38 games in the Premier League this season, making an impressive 14 assists and scoring seven goals in the process. Undoubtedly one of the best players outside of the top six, the Scotsman’s reportedly got admirers all over the country, and The Sun’s Alan Nixon believes the Toffees have a ‘major interest’.

While he also mentions Arsenal are working on making their interest known too, Fraser could become a club legend if he signs for Everton. Indeed, he needs to take advantage of this huge season and take a step up, but not a step too far as Arsenal would be.

The 25-year-old can be part of the exciting project Everton have in mind. Their attacking style would be attractive to Fraser and his direct nature would work wonders at Goodison Park. Frankly, it seems like a match made in heaven.

He’s rated at £16.2m on Transfermarkt and that seems a favourable price for Everton considering his age and potential impact. Obviously, Bournemouth would surely demand more than that but as a marquee addition, the former Aberdeen star is the kind of upwardly mobile talent the club are in desperate need of. Granted, any potential arrival could impact the playing time of Bernard, but competition is healthy, and it might just improve both players’ abilities.

The Toffees would go some way to reaching their goal of European football if they can snatch Fraser from Bournemouth this summer. He’s exactly what they need, so Marcel Brands needs to get a move on and sign him before Arsenal do instead.

Leeds United fans on Twitter have made it very clear that they don’t want Jordan Rhodes at the club.

Speculation started on Twitter that the Yorkshire club have joined the race for the Sheffield Wednesday striker, but fans weren’t keen on the idea of the Scot being added to their ranks.

Rhodes has seemingly lost his touch over the past two seasons, as his goal-scoring rate has decreased significantly.

The attacker was a goal machine during his time at Blackburn Rovers, but his returns have been diminishing in recent seasons.

Last term, the 29-year-old was outscored by both Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford, so there has understandably been question marks raised as to whether or not he would be a good addition to the squad.

It remains to be seen whether or not anything will come of this initial rumour, but if he were to arrive at Leeds it certainly wouldn’t be a popular signing.
