Player Zone: Henrikh Mkhitaryan has a huge point to prove against Man United

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United’s transformation since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the helm in December has seen the Old Trafford outfit pluck wins from the jaws of defeat frequently – most notably when they recorded the most unlikely of European triumphs at Parc des Princes, leaving an incandescent PSG in their wake.

Everyone in the camp seems to have moved on since Jose Mourinho’s departure, except for Alexis Sanchez who, if anything, has been left behind with the grumpy Portuguese.

The Chilean’s career has nosedived since he swapped north London for Manchester and an injury sustained in the league win at the weekend, which will keep him out for ‘four to six weeks’, will have only compounded the winger’s misery.

Which “global superstar” has just been named Man Utd’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video above…

Arsenal were forced to let the influential maestro leave in January 2018 for next to nothing – or the equivalent to that, considering they received an apathetic Henrikh Mkhitaryan in return.

For the entire year that followed, it was unclear as to which of the two clubs was the major beneficiary  from the catastrophic swap deal, however, the footballing world now unanimously accept the Red Devils were dealt the bad hand.

While Sanchez’s career at Manchester United has relentlessly lurched from disaster to disaster, Mkhitaryan is finally proving his value at the Emirates Stadium and a long-awaited return to form could hardly have come at a better time for the Armenian – the Gunners host his former club on Sunday.

In the wider scheme of things, the clash is crucial for both sides as Arsenal look to leapfrog United into the Champions League places, while their visitors will be hoping to establish themselves further in the coveted fourth spot.

However, the underlying storyline emerges with Mkhitaryan, who will be desperate to prove to his former boss – Mourinho will surely have some form of interest in the tie – that he made a huge mistake trading him for his opposite number last campaign.

Having recovered from a metatarsal fracture, the 30-year-old has grabbed his number 7 shirt and pulled on his boots with determination – he has chalked up two goals and three assists in his four appearances since his return to fitness and, for what is surely one of few times since he crossed the channel to ply his trade in Manchester in 2016, has looked well worth the £26m price-tag he commanded when Mourinho and co shelled out for his services.

Completing an impressive 4 key passes against Bournemouth – a game in which he also grabbed two assists – the former Borussia Dortmund man showed that he has the creative abilities to fill the number 10 void that will be left by the imminent departure of Aaron Ramsey and the likely exit of Mesut Ozil in the summer.

If reports stating Emery will be handed a £45m transfer kitty this summer are to be believed, the Spaniard will have to be incredibly shrewd in the market.

Unfortunately for the former PSG honcho, attacking midfield is not the only area in need of reinforcement – the Gunners could do with another right-back, perhaps a centre-back, as well as a new back-up goalkeeper considering Petr Cech is set to retire at the end of the campaign.

For a club with top four aspirations and so many leaks to be plugged, a transfer budget so small is far from ideal. It will be crucial, therefore, that if Emery can convert some of his existing cohort into the types of players he needs, he should.

Divisive Mkhitaryan might not have the legs of Ramsey or the excellent vision of Ozil, but his link up with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whom he struck up a lethal partnership with at BVB, is often sublime.

A match-winning performance at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday will do both player and manager the world of good going into the final stretch of the season and the following campaign – it may be the 90 minutes which convince Emery he won’t need to spend big on a new number 10 in the summer.

Leeds United: Kalvin Phillips standing out as the main man

Leeds are finally starting to look more solid in midfield, aren’t they? Their hard-fought win against Bristol on Saturday and the first-half demolition at Reading proved just how important Kalvin Phillips is to the club’s promotion chase.

The Whites went top of the league on Tuesday night and if they’re to finish there at the end of the season, they’re going to have to grind out victories against the top teams and then win comfortably against the strugglers of the division. They’ve shown they’re capable of doing both in just one week.

The 23-year-old has made 33 appearances this season and has grown into his role as midfield general well. It’s a tough position to take up in a Marcelo Bielsa team because they aim to dominate possession and play their football in the opposing half. This means the team are susceptible to counter attacks and have to defend large spaces.

At times, the Leeds defence has looked shaky this campaign because of that, but recently there’s been more confidence in their ability to not leak goals. That obviously helps in games against tough opposition where you sometimes face periods where defending is crucial, just as it was against Bristol.

However, it’s also important because it gives confidence to the forwards so they can push higher without feeling they’re leaving the team vulnerable. Phillips – a Thorp Arch graduate and valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt – has played a massive part in improving confidence in the defensive third, and that showed in their battering of Reading on Tuesday.

Leeds haven’t conceded a goal in the last three games and have only let in six in their last nine games since the 3-1 home defeat to title-challengers Norwich. That’s some run, and if Phillips continues to command the midfield as he is doing, the Whites could claim one of the automatic promotion spots at a canter.

Southampton January target speaks out on failed move to Premier League

[ad_pod ]

Given Ralph Hasenhuttl’s excellent track record with developing youth players – he has got the very best out of the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek at St Mary’s Stadium – it is no wonder that Southampton were linked with a move for an impressive youngster in January.

Joakim Maehle, who the Saints were reportedly keen on two months ago, has spoken about the ‘concrete’ interest and it seems he’s hopeful the switch could still happen – he shouldn’t get too excited, though.

What did he say?

Despite his being only 21-years-old, Danish publication BT rate the Genk man as one of the best defenders in the Juniper Pro League and they have amassed comments he has made regarding his future:

“I don’t know if you can say I was clear or unclear [on moving to Southampton]. But it is certain that there was a lot of interest from Southampton. Hopefully there will be a chance, and then we will see what happens. “

Stay where you are, Joakim

Indeed, Southampton seemed in need of some reinforcement at right-back with Cedric Soares joining Inter Milan on loan with just five days of the January transfer window left but, now, they look to be okay.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

Yan Valery has been immense and has made the Saints faithful forget all about the Portuguese’s departure, so it would be pointless to rush to spend eight figures on another young full-back.

The Frenchman was recently awarded with a new deal which will keep him on the south coast until 2023 and he looks set to hold down the right of the Southampton defence for the foreseeable future.

If Maehle was getting his hopes up about Hasenhuttl and co reigniting their interest in the summer, then he may be in for a shock come the end of the season.

Tottenham fans react as Sancho hails "special connection" with Kane

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to some comments from Jadon Sancho, as the England wonderkid said he has a “special connection” with Harry Kane.

England put in another jaw-dropping display under Gareth Southgate on Friday night, and for once it wasn’t Tottenham players that stole the spotlight.

Whether it be Kane picking up the World Cup golden boot, Dele Alli grabbing crucial goals at the back post or Eric Dier making history in a penalty shoot-out, the Lilywhites have carried a strong presence in the England squad for quite some time.

It was Sancho and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling that were the stars of the show on Friday though, and Spurs fans are hoping the former will become the latest string of English stars to ply their trade in north London.

Speaking after picking up an assist that was provided for him by a lovely Kane pass, Sancho said the pair have a “special connection” on the pitch.

Fans are rather unsurprisingly freaking out about the comments, practically begging the club to sign the man with nine goals and a remarkable 17 assists this season.

Declan Rice leaves Roy Keane reeling as Gareth Southgate adds to England jigsaw

[ad_pod ]

It is a testament to Declan Rice’s immeasurable ability that, at just 20-years-old, his career has already been defined by a tug of war between two nations. The story has not been overly dissimilar at club level either.

Prior to 28th December 2018, a day which saw Rice sign a long-term contract at West Ham, the Hammers supporters lived in daily fear that he would use his impeccable form to elevate himself to a higher platform. Cryptic Instagram stories evoked their own set of fresh questions and started umpteen transfer rumours, leaving hordes of grown men in a state of panicky delirium.

But the combative midfielder’s decision to sign a new deal banished those rumours and gave way to the politically-charged and emotionally-tentative issue of his international career. Suddenly the newly-born star was faced with a choice between the Republic of Ireland, for whom he had already made three friendly appearances, and England, advertising an attractive vacancy at the base of their midfield and boasting a plethora of phenomenally gifted young players.

Following months of relentless speculation, The Three Lions got the nod. Gareth Southgate has since made his intention clear by naming him in the recent squad for England’s Euro qualifying fixtures against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

Some say that Roy Keane was hurling tins of Guinness at the TV when Rice stepped onto the Wembley turf to make his debut against Czech Republic last week. Back in May 2018, Keane defiantly ignored the intricacies of Rice’s situation by declaring his future for him.

“It’s going to be pretty difficult as he’s Irish,” Keane told the media, via Irish Independent.

“Where else would he want to go? It’s pretty straightforward. He is Irish.”

And James McLean, a notorious pillar of morality and exemplary professionalism, fuelled the image of Rice the traitor this week by telling him to “*** off” – frightening stuff.

But away from the bitterness of Rice’s decision there is no doubt that the West Ham enforcer can provide a compelling solution to both a short and long-term England problem.

The Three Lions’ development under Southgate is pointing towards the emergence of a new golden era. The last of its kind fought for trophies around the turn of the millennium, but an infamous midfield conundrum was one of a multitude of insidious forces which stunted their progress.

No manager seemed to possess either the cojones or tactical nous to leave one of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes on the bench. Instead, Sven Goran-Eriksen embodied the spirit of a Sunday league manager who lives in fear of being confronted by an obscenity-screaming parent on the sideline as vicarious fantasies crumbled in front of their eyes.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

The solution: the three phenomenally gifted central midfielders took turns to operate on the left-wing. No central midfielder currently residing within England’s ranks comes close to any of the aforementioned trio, but Rice’s presence will ensure that the creative, dynamic talents vying for a starting berth – such as Jordan Henderson, Harry Winks, Ross Barkley, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli – at least have the freedom to play to their strengths. Unlike England’s last golden era, the central midfielders will not be strangled by the prowess of the players around them in a paradoxical twist of fate.

On the point of Henderson, it’s worth noting that Rice’s decision to pledge allegiance to England will free the midfielder from the manacles which shackled him in Russia last summer. Liverpool’s divisive captain spent the World Cup mopping up in front of the defence, with Southgate unconvinced by England’s answer to Keane, otherwise known as Eric Dier. Henderson played like a schoolboy on trial with Real Madrid – as he does every week – running with purpose and determination but lacking the intelligence to channel his relentless work rate into something resembling quality football.

The defensive anchor role, though, demands a level of discipline, composure and positional understanding which eludes Henderson. The same criticism, however, cannot be waged at Rice.

His performance against Montenegro attested to a wider feeling that his decision to defy Keane’s subliminal messages is a game-changer for England’s long-term ambitions. It was a routine test for a player who will personally go head-to-head with some of the most tantalising attacking midfielders in world football during his career, but it’s no coincidence that England’s attacking contingent of Barkley, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling all excelled in the knowledge that Rice was patrolling behind them – suspect defending, of course, also aided their cause.

His maiden start for England was a key moment in the nation’s development: they have found a vital piece of the jigsaw who excels in his own role and simultaneously raises the standard of those around him.

It’s no wonder Keane and McClean have been left reeling, even if the root of their exasperation transcends beyond football.
