Liverpool fans react to Ian Doyle’s update on Willian swoop

Just how do you go about strengthening a Liverpool squad that won the Champions League last season and was cantering to the Premier League title this year?

That of course is the million dollar question, but there’s a real argument to be made that actually, the Reds just need to get more strength in depth, rather than actually splashing the cash on someone to go straight into the first-team.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And reports in recent days had suggested Chelsea winger Willian could be a potential cut-price target for Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer. But now, The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle has refuted that suggestion, insisting he is “not one of the players being considered” at this time.

After hearing Doyle’s update on their rumoured swoop for Willian, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

One Liverpool fan meanwhile outlined how Willian’s age and prospective wages meant he wouldn’t have been ideal for the club.

On a free transfer, it may be slightly short-sighted to simply turn your noses up at Willian.

After all, the Brazilian has still shown signs of being a Premier League-quality player for Chelsea, scoring seven times and providing six assists in just 37 games across all competitions.

As a squad option, it would be an incredibly shrewd piece of business, but at the same time, it’s not something Liverpool should be having sleepless nights over if they don’t sign him.

Opinion: Kalvin Phillips has emerged as a dark horse for a deserved England call-up

[ad_pod ]

The return to holding midfield has been kind to Kalvin Phillips. First he headed home a last gasp equaliser away at Middlesbrough to salvage a priceless point, then he backed up that display by playing a starring role in Leeds United’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City on Wednesday evening.

In the euphoria of victory superlatives and emotionally-fuelled compliments are often dished out through rose-tinted spectacles. Every fan is guilty of falling into that trap, but there is certainly a weight of credibility lying beneath the claims of those Leeds supporters who have tipped Phillips to play for England in the future.

Now, those who do not share the same level of enthusiasm for Phillips may well be inclined to call hyperbole and dismiss his credentials, but he offers something which no other English player can right now: a fine blend between deep-lying creativity and defensive intelligence in the pivot role.

Jordan Henderson was handed the responsibility of anchoring England’s midfield at the World Cup in Russia, getting the nod over an increasingly unpopular Eric Dier. Liverpool’s captain was largely praised for his discipline and willingness to compromise his playmaking quality to offer a shield in front of the defensive unit.

While the praise was fundamentally deserved, it was impossible to escape the feeling that he looked uncomfortable in the position and the Three Lions would have been markedly more balanced with a genuine defensive midfielder in the side.

Following the events which have unfolded this week, it would be difficult to argue that there is a better candidate than Declan Rice to operate in holding midfield when the next set of England internationals come round next month.

West Ham’s lynchpin has been a colossal cog for Manuel Pellegrini this season, patrolling the midfield with a maturity well beyond his 20-years of existence.

A complete performance against Arsenal shortly before his 20th birthday, which he capped by scoring the winning goal, forced the footballing world to take the boy seriously. The Hammers faithful had been barking loudest about his credentials to grow in the game for well over twelve months, but that performance finally made neutrals appreciate the seriousness of their claims.

It feels as if a similar pattern could be set to unfold in regards to Phillips’ development and, on current form, he should certainly be on Gareth Southgate’s radar.

The England boss has consistently showcased his progressive train of thought, opting to focus on the development of youth players and trusting in those who are willing to embrace his philosophy.

That he called up Mason Mount to the senior squad in October 2018 serves to vindicate that widely held belief, and his willingness to consider bringing Championship players into the fold gives Phillips hope of drawing serious interest from the England hierarchy – if not now then at a later stage in 2019.

Dier and Rice represent Phillips’ biggest competition to earning a place in the squad. In many respects the jury is still out on both players: Tottenham’s answer to Roy Keane commands a healthy contingent of sceptics and has been struggling with injury of late, while West Ham’s prodigy remains uncapped – for England, anyway.

Rice is undoubtedly a strong favourite to step into England’s defensive midfield role but places within the squad are up for grabs, and the current playing field could work in favour of the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ when Southgate selects his squad for the next round of England fixtures.

Crystal Palace fans loved Max Meyer’s FA Cup performance

[ad_pod ]

Once regarded as one of the hottest young talents in German football, Max Meyer’s career took a peculiar turn when he joined Crystal Palace from Schalke 04 in 2018.

The 23-year-old has largely found it difficult to make an impact this season, managing just one goal in 20 Premier League appearances for the Eagles.

Meyer was handed the opportunity to impress against Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, however, and he took it.

The attacker scored Palace’s second in their 2-0 win, which has earned the capital outfit a spot in the sixth round of the FA Cup.

Meyer had a pass success rate of 83% and managed three shots against Doncaster, according to WhoScored.

And the Palace supporters were pleased with his performance on the afternoon.

Meyer is certainly a talent, he just needs to show it on a consistent basis.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Palace fans can be seen below:

Injury News: Ralph Hasenhuttl says Michael Obafemi out for rest of the season

[ad_pod ]Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said in his pre-match Fulham press conference on Tuesday that striker Michael Obafemi will be out for the rest of the season following the hamstring injury he picked up against Arsenal on Sunday, but the blow could give one teammate a big opportunity.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 18-year-old appeared in the squad for the first time since the 3-1 win against Huddersfield Town in December after returning from a hamstring problem, coming on as a half-time substitute against the Gunners.

However, the explosive teenager lasted just 20 minutes before suffering another issue, and the worst has now been confirmed in news that no Saints supporter would have wanted to hear given the situation they find themselves in.

The south coast outfit will now have to do without the one-cap Republic of Ireland international for the crunch relegation clash against the Cottagers at St Mary’s on Wednesday night and for the remainder of the campaign, which is hardly ideal given top goalscorer Danny Ings is also currently out of action.

Who could step up?

Hasenhuttl may well choose to start the more experienced Charlie Austin or Shane Long up top against Claudio Ranieri’s men as the hosts look to pick up the victory that could take them out of the relegation zone.

Check out the video below for Groundhopping FC’s excellent matchday vlog from the Emirates as Arsenal beat 2-0 Southampton on Sunday…

However, one man who could take advantage of Obafemi’s misfortune is Sam Gallagher, with the 23-year-old being in and around the first-team in recent weeks, playing the final seven minutes of the defeat to Cardiff City.

The centre-forward needs to take advantage and step up if and when he does get a chance in the coming weeks, with Southampton looking to be in more and more of a perilous situation as the games go by.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan proving himself as Arsenal’s best creative force

It’s no coincidence that Arsenal’s rejuvenated form’s collided with Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s return.

After suffering a nasty injury, which sidelined him for a couple of months, the former Manchester United man has come back to light up the Gunners’ attack and helped them record some convincing wins in recent weeks.

The 30-year-old added a little bit of magic to their attacking third, working really well through the right-wing and using his creativity to open up defences for the Gunners. Not only has Mkhitaryan helped create goals, assisting three times in the last two games, he’s also been at the end of scoring them.

He’s managed to score two from as many games, flooring Southampton and Bournemouth with his unpredictability. Mkhitaryan’s impressive burst of pace, along with the ability to slide into promising positions helped him score a goal with a sublime finish and assisting cleverly with a trick volley shot.

He picked things up a notch against the Cherries, where he found his returning teammate – a certain Mesut Ozil – back to enable him to experiment with his movement. He roamed around everywhere in the final third, incidentally resulting in his goal when he picked up the ball through the middle before having a delightful exchange with the German creator, leading up to the goal.

He went onto assist twice, once with a perfect cross and another with a stunning through-ball. Indeed, he’s finally starting to look like the player Jose Mourinho must have thought he was signing when he initially brought him to Manchester United in the summer of 2016.

Having told UEFA.com back in 2009 that he was a fan of the club and Arsene Wenger’s commitment to playing young players in an attacking system, the Armenian legend looks to be helping Arsenal dream of the Champions League almost a decade on.

A complete package enabling the Gunners to perform at their utmost potential, Mkhitaryan’s becoming indispensable to Emery’s system because of his effectiveness in the final third.

Staying put: Rakeem Harper must make most important decision of his career

West Bromwich Albion’s Rakeem Harper is next in a long list of young talents destined for greatness according to manager Darren Moore, but would it be wise to move to a “bigger” side at this point in his career?

West Brom are reportedly keen on renewing the 18-year-old contract which is due to expire this summer, and it is understood that talks are going positively with the player keen on continuing his development at the club (via Daily Mail).

However, it may worry some fans to learn that the two parties are yet to come to a formal agreement, and with Premier League clubs interested anything is possible.

Indeed, having made his top-flight debut at the tender age of 17, it is clear to see why the Baggies hold him in such high esteem and equally obvious why he is attracting a lot of attention from other teams.

Darren Moore reaffirmed his belief that he could be become a ‘top player’, adding: ‘This is the club to keep him right, we know his strengths and where he needs to improve, and he is improving. We want to see him stay here, we’ve agreed that we want him to stay, his advisers agree that he should stay, it’s just a matter of getting it sorted now.’ (via Daily Mail).

Moore is not wrong: too many times have we seen the development of young players stunted by a single rash decision to move to a bigger side before they are ready.

Harper is no different. He must continue the initial part of his career in a familiar place; where his qualities are known, appreciated and nurtured.

Encouragingly, it is rapidly becoming the norm for young players to either stay where they are or move abroad, like Jadon Sancho, to competitions such as the Bundesliga in search of greater and more viable opportunities.

Unless he is given the same guarantees he has at West Brom, there is no obvious reason why he should leave.
