Simon Mignolet posts ahead of Man United clash

Simon Mignolet has been getting ready ahead of a Europa League tie against Manchester United, which he has posted about on Instagram.

The 31-year-old is now representing Club Brugge, in his native Belgium, who have come across the Red Devils in the European competition’s Round of 32.

He helped his side to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, even providing the assist for Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis’ goal, when his goal kick went behind the United defence, setting the Nigerian up to lob Sergio Romero with a first-time effort.

This meant that the Belgian club go into the second leg level despite Anthony Martial’s equaliser.

While Mignolet will be focusing on ensuring he and his teammates progress to the next round, he has not forgotten his previous roots in England, adding “#YNWA” onto his post ahead of the tie.

This comes after he represented Liverpool 204 times, between 2013 and 2019, and shows he is still thinking of his time at Anfield.

Mignolet’s initial Instagram post can be seen below:

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans have been full of praise for one key man.

Everton’s target doing little to keep Ancelotti keen

In the January transfer window, it was revealed by Inside Futbol that Everton and West Ham had made enquiries over the availability of AZ Alkmaar star Oussama Idrissi – Serie A outfit Roma were also believed to be considering a swoop.

However, an exit from the Netherlands never materialised for the Morocco international, and he remained with AZ.

At the time, it would’ve seemed like a real coup from the Toffees had they managed to secure the forward.

He had notched a huge 20 goals while operating as a left-forward, and also registered three assists.

His excellent goalscoring numbers this term come after he also caught the eye in 2018/19, scoring 14 goals and amassing eight assists.

However, since January came to a close, the 24-year-old has done very little to keep Everton and Carlo Ancelotti keen.

In his four appearances throughout February, Idrissi has neither scored a goal or set one up.

He has faced FC Twente – AZ Alkmaar lost 2-0 – before also coming up against PEC Zwolle in Eredivisie action, while he also appeared against LASK on two occasions in a two-legged Europa League Round of 32 tie.

AZ Alkmaar only won one of those games – the encounter with PEC Zwolle – and Idrissi was very ineffective.

Forget the fact that he neither scored or assisted. Idrissi only had one shot on target across those four games, while also amassing just one key pass – he also had ten unsuccessful touches, and was dispossessed on eight occasions.

His form so far this season means he has earned the right to be fairly poor for AZ Alkmaar – if fans and teammates began to turn on him, that would be harsh.

Premier League Inflation: You won’t believe how much these famous transfers would cost today…

However, in terms of keeping potential suitors keen on signing him as we build up to the summer, his dip since January ended is concerning and will surely also do little to ensure that the Toffees as keen as they seemingly were to sign him.

Manchester City: Phil Foden’s touch vs Aston Villa in Carabao Cup win continues to wow supporters

Responding to footage of Phil Foden’s deft touch against Aston Villa during Manchester City’s third successive Carabao Cup win, many Sky Blues supporters haven’t been able to stop purring over the youngster who went on to become their Man of the Match at Wembley.

Foden, who has started just two Premier League games for City this season whilst making a flurry of appearances off the bench, shined in the final – scoring the highest SofaScore rating (7.8) out of all his starting teammates. As well as this, the teenager also registered a 90% pass accuracy playing on the right hand side – a position usually held by either Bernardo Silva or Riyad Mahrez. Once lauded as having ‘world class potential’ by the Manchester Evening News, swathes of fans have responded to footage of the player on Twitter, with many Sky Blues supporters continuing to rave over Foden’s touch.

The Englishman, faced with a long diagonal ball courtesy of Oleksandr Zinchenko, took the ball down with ease and proceeded to probe the Villa penalty area.

Reacting to the footage, many supporters have shown nothing but praise for the 19-year-old – with one fan even claiming he is ‘as good as Mahrez’. Find all of their best comments down below.

Iorfa showed he’s Premier League quality against Man City

Sheffield Wednesday weren’t expected to do much against Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

To be honest, it was a bit of a mismatch, a side who had won just two of their previous 13 league games facing off against a team fresh off the back of beating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu should only have ever gone one way.

Eventually, City got the win, but they were made to work hard for it.

The reigning Premier League champions only managed a 1-0 win against the Owls, but it could have been an absolute rout if it weren’t for one man.

Pep Guardiola’s side certainly had enough of the ball to batter Wednesday, enjoying 80% of the possession, but Dominic Iorfa almost single-handedly made sure the Champions League contenders didn’t embarrass the Yorkshire club.

A glance at Iorfa’s stats shows just how good he was against City.

Four tackles and just one foul shows not only how tenacious he was when trying to recover the ball but also how well he timed his challenges against one of the deadliest frontlines in Europe.

Of course, the Mancunians came forward time and time again, and with that amount of pressure being applied, sometimes all you can do is clear the ball, and Iorfa was often the man getting rid of the danger, making a staggering 11 clearances at Hillsborough.

The 6 foot 4 defender made a great account of himself when trying to deal with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus, and if he can produce that type of performance on a regular basis he may soon be playing top-flight football.

Iorfa has been one of the bright sparks in Wednesday’s poor season, often earning plaudits from the fans, and he has shown that he has the quality required to play at a higher level on earlier this week.

In other news, Sheffield Wednesday fans should be excited by this youngster who describes himself as similar to Romelu Lukaku.

Raul Jimenez climbs into top 20 most valuable strikers

Any lingering doubts over Raul Jimenez’s ability to regularly find the net in the Premier League which may have existed when he arrived at Wolves have been firmly quashed since the beginning of the 2018/19 season.

The masked Mexican has been a colossal presence at the spearhead of Wolves’ attack, offering a focal point to play through while simultaneously remaining ruthless in front of goal.

He set the tone with 13 league goals during a brilliant maiden campaign and he has already matched that return during the 2019/20 season.

Given the progress he has made since arriving at Wolves, it’s perhaps no surprise that Jimenez’s valuation has skyrocketed.

Popular football website Transfermarkt recently updated their valuations and the 28-year-old striker received his second boost of the season, rising to £45m – a valuation that makes him the 16th most valuable striker in the world alongside the likes of Tammy Abraham and prolific Serie A striker Ciro Immobile.

That Jimenez was valued at just £7.2m in February 2018 attests to the extent of his development since arriving in English football, and there are a handful of notable landmarks to explain the exponential rise in value.

Here, Football FanCast take a look at three of Jimenez’s biggest achievements.

CONCACAF Gold Cup winner

One of the more understated of collective triumphs, Mexico won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019.

Jimenez scored five goals and provided four assists in just six outings, including the assist for the only goal of the final against the USA.

Given he only played 54 minutes of football at the World Cup in 2018, it’s fair to say he’s not a key player for the Central American nation.

Jimenez joined Wolves with a point to prove having failed to make the grade at Atletico Madrid and it didn’t take long for him to hit the ground running.

A debut goal against Everton marked the first of 13 league goals in 2018/19 – a career high league return in European football.

The 6ft 1 striker had never reached double figures, and his ability to do so in one of Europe’s most elite competitions certainly did his reputation plenty of favours.

Linked to Man United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side may have enjoyed a mini revival in recent weeks but Manchester United are not the same side they once were.

Still, even with that being said, being linked with one of world football’s most prestigious and historically successful outfits represents an achievement in itself.

In the 2020 January window, United reportedly moved to open talks with Jimenez over a potential transfer though nothing ever came to fruition.

If Jimenez continues to find the net for Wolves, it would be no surprise if one of Europe’s giants tabled a significant bid for his services in the summer.

Spurs striker Kane "could have his head turned" next season

Clinton Morrison believes that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could have his “head turned” if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, per The Debate (March 11th, 44:50).

What’s he said?

Spurs are currently eighth in the Premier League, seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Manchester City’s suspension from next season’s Champions League means that the fifth-placed team could qualify for the competition this term, but Spurs are also four points behind Manchester United, who occupy that slot.

Kane has been injured since New Year’s Day, of course, while Son Heung-Min is also out; Spurs have not won since the South Korea international fractured his arm against Aston Villa in February, crashing out of both the FA Cup and this season’s Champions League at the hands of Norwich City and RB Leipzig respectively.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

And Morrison thinks that Kane could be tempted to leave if they can’t find a way into Europe’s premier club competition next season, with their chances this term already appearing remote.

He said: “The thing I worry about, and this is a big worry, is that Harry Kane is at the peak of his career and he wants to play Champions League football. I think Tottenham have to somehow get into the Champions League next season.

“I know it’s his club and he loves the club, Harry Kane, and I don’t think he will leave in the summer. I think it’s a better coup to keep Harry Kane if you’re playing Champions League football.”

He added: “I’m not saying he’s going to leave, but he’ll have his head turned because Harry Kane should be playing in the Champions League because he’s one of the best strikers in European football.”

Can’t wait forever

Kane needs Spurs to get their act together.

This season, of course, is a transitional one, with Jose Mourinho replacing Mauricio Pochettino as manager and the club attempting to find a way through a worsening injury crisis – the likes of Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko are also currently out.

Next season, though, is pretty much Europe or bust.

A failure to reach the Champions League wouldn’t just see Kane questioning his future but a number of other players, too.

Kane has been a star for Spurs for some time now, scoring 181 goals in 278 appearances for the club, but he has yet to win a trophy and he cannot have his nose pressed up against the glass when it comes to the Champions League.

Spurs know what they have to do; they simply don’t have any room for error next season.

Meanwhile, Spurs have been proved very wrong by one former star!

Man United fans swoon over Dwight McNeil

It can be argued that this is an exciting time for Manchester United when looking at their youth prospects.

Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Scott McTominay have all established themselves in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, while players such as Angel Gomes are also waiting in the wings.

However, there is one player fans think should be among them: Dwight McNeil.

The now-20-year-old left Man United’s youth team in 2014 to join Burnley’s U18s, where he has since worked his way up to being a Premier League regular.

Some fans can’t believe he was allowed to leave, with one suggesting that Sir Alex Ferguson would have been able to use him to United’s benefit.

How well do you really know the Premier League’s greatest ever manager? Find out below…

There has also been more general appreciation for what he can do, as the winger has now played a total of 58 times for Burnley, scoring five goals and assisting a further 10.

Considering he is still just 20 years old, this is a fairly impressive return, with seven of those goal contributions coming in the current Premier League campaign.

All of this has led to some supporters suggesting that United should be looking to bring him back to Old Trafford.

This does not necessarily mean that he should be starting every week in the minds of some, but the consensus is that he can be a useful asset for Solskjaer.

The fact that, on top of his goal contributions, the winger averages 1.5 key passes, 2.1 dribbles, 1.8 crosses and 1.4 tackles a game backs that opinion up.

Meanwhile, one academy graduate has uploaded a hilarious video onto Instagram.

Celtic fans slam Kristoffer Ajer’s comments on Virgil van Dijk comparisons

Lots of Celtic fans are criticising Kristoffer Ajer after the defender spoke about comparisons to Virgil van Dijk.

Plenty of players have come to Scotland, shone, been sold for profit and gone on to great things in England and Europe. Not many have made quite the impact down south that van Dijk has though, transforming Liverpool from nearly men into European and World champions.

Ajer meanwhile has revealed how flattered he is to be compared to the colossal Dutchman, but has also admitted he must improve.

“Of course, it is flattering to be compared to one of the world’s best footballers, but I still have a lot to develop in my game. I work hard on this every single day in Scotland,” he said, via The Daily Record.

“There are many areas of my game I need to improve. I need to be better at judging whether to tackle to win a ball or stand on my feet, I need to be better at attacking set-pieces and I also need to get more experience.”

Needless to say, the Celtic Park faithful definitely agree that the 21 year-old has plenty of improving to do, as he has stagnated after showing huge potential in his first season with the club.

He was heavily criticised after the Europa League defeat to Copenhagen, and the Twitter reactions down below are quite brutal, as one supporter said he’s worse than Jason Denayer and another commented that he is “average at best”…

Should Liverpool sign Layvin Kurzawa?

Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain left-back Layvin Kurzawa.

According to Spanish media outlet Sport, the Reds are one of a number of clubs who are interested in signing the Frenchman, with Inter Milan, Napoli and Arsenal also in the running for his signature.

Given he will be available on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer, it’s no surprise that a handful of high profile clubs are monitoring the situation.

But would Jurgen Klopp be wise to bring him to Anfield?

Football FanCast writers have their say on whether he’d be a quality addition to a star-studded squad…

Ben Goodwin

“Kurzawa would be an excellent free signing for Liverpool, and although he would obviously arrive as a back-up to Andy Robertson, he may even be good enough to compete with the Scotland skipper for a place in the first XI.

“Robertson’s form has dipped this season, and Kurzawa has bags of experience despite being just 27, racking up three league titles and six domestic cups in his career so far.

“While some fans may have reservations about blocking the path of youngsters like Yasser Larouci, Kurzawa is far better than Larouci and would give Jurgen Klopp a real headache if Robertson does not return to his 2018/19 form.”

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Christy Malyan

“At first glance, Kurzawa might seem like another Joel Matip – an experienced defender who can be brought to Anfield without a transfer fee – but whereas the Cameroonian had established himself as a key player at Schalke and looked ready to take the step up, Kurzawa would be nothing more than PSG’s offcuts.

“He’s not made 20 league starts during any of his Ligue 1 campaigns at PSG and while it’s true Liverpool only really need someone to back up Andy Robertson, should the reigning European champions really be looking to sign anyone who can’t command a regular spot in their current team?

“Liverpool would be much better off bringing in a young and hungry left-back who’s eager to improve – much like Robertson when he first arrived at Anfield – than someone who’d essentially just be swapping one big-name club for another and picking up a presumably handsome paycheque in the process. Liverpool are barking up the wrong tree with this one.”

Jack Saville

“It’s absolutely no surprise that Liverpool are paying an interest given Kurzawa’s pedigree and experience in the game. He has won the Ligue 1 title on three separate occasions and that in itself should hold him in good stead if he makes the move to Anfield.

“Klopp needs a squad full of winners in order to ensure the club’s rising supremacy in English football represents the beginning of a legacy rather than a fleeting period of success, and Kurzawa certainly fits the bill in that respect.

Naturally, PSG do not have a side of Manchester City’s quality fighting them for top spot and the challenges associated with winning the English top flight are certainly greater than in France, but his experience will still have provided him with the mental attributes needed to cope with the demands and pressures of a title push.

“Question marks linger over his defensive solidity, but for his price there is unlikely to be a better option on the market.”

Manchester City: Fans baffled by potential transfer exchange involving Joao Cancelo

Plenty of Manchester City fans have reacted with bewilderment to a transfer report from Italy which involves Joao Cancelo.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Portugal defender is part of a reported three-pronged transfer exchange between City, Inter and Barcelona which would see him moving to Serie A, Lautaro Martinez joining the La Liga side and Nelson Semedo coming to the Etihad Stadium. News of the complex transfer arrangement was shared by @City_Xtra on Twitter.

Cancelo only came to England last summer as part of an exchange deal which saw ex-Manchester City defender Danilo take his place at Juventus but the 25-year-old has started only eight Premier League games this season, with Pep Guardiola often preferring to start with Kyle Walker at right-back.

Spanish media outlet Sport had claimed [via Sport Witness] that Guardiola has been eyeing up a possible move for Semedo, who has featured in 29 games for Barcelona in the current campaign.

These Manchester City fans on Twitter seemed rather baffled and mystified upon reading the transfer report from Corriere dello Sport:
