HYS: Does Wanyama have a future at Tottenham?

[ad_pod ]

In recent quotes carried by La Roma 24, the agent of Victor Wanyama said that his client would not be leaving Tottenham Hotspur this month.

Indeed, according to Ivan Modia, Wanyama will 100% still be with Tottenham by the time that the January transfer window slams shut.

The 27-year-old has only made seven first-team appearances for Spurs this season, with a knee problem making him unavailable for selection for long spells.

Wanyama has actually not played a minute of Premier League football since November 10 and will not be involved against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Kenyan has been strongly linked with a move away from Tottenham, but he has a contract at the club until the summer of 2021.

On his day, the 6ft 2in ace is a very dominant central midfielder.

And with that in mind, we put the question to the Tottenham fans – does Wanyama still have a future at your club, or should he be sold as soon as possible?

Aston Villa are doing a great job of unloading deadweight in their squad

According to The Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa have sent goalkeeper André Moreira back to parent club Atlético Madrid immediately.

The 23-year-old signed for The Villans on a season-long loan in August 2018, but could only manage two appearances for the club this season, both in the League Cup.

The goalkeeper was brought in by Steve Bruce due to depleted numbers in the goalkeeping position, however, the signing of Lovre Kalinic this month only pushed Moreira further down the pecking order under new manager Dean Smith.

This is the second loan departure this week at Aston Villa, as Yannick Bolasie returned to parent club Everton yesterday as well. Unlike Moreira, Bolasie was playing regularly for The Villans, however, he was demanding £70k a week in wages, and his performances did not warrant that.

What this does show by Villa is that they are intent on unloading those players that would be regarded as deadweight. With The Lions under huge financial pressure this season, they would have had to free up their wage bill in order to bring in new faces, and as a consequence, Moreira and Bolasie must have been top of the list for underachievers that needed to go.

This surely gives Villa a bit more freedom to bring in some new faces this month that would perhaps provide just a bit more than the Congolese and Portuguese did, and Smith must now be relishing the thought of bolstering his squad for the second half of the season where Villa hope to mount a promotion push.

The Missing Piece: Why Thomas Meunier would complete Everton’s team

[ad_pod ]

It is no secret that Everton have spent significant amounts of money strengthening their squad over the last couple of transfer windows.

Toffees boss Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands have worked tirelessly to bring in big-money signings such as Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Richarlison, but all of their investment won’t have the desired effect unless they have balance within the starting XI.

What’s the problem?

Well, the Merseyside-based club don’t have many issues in terms of picking their strongest line-up, if you were to look at the players individually. In Jordan Pickford, Everton have England’s number one and a goalkeeper of real quality, who will only get better.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Ahead of him, they have an exquisite left-back in Digne who has scored three goals and recorded three assists already this season (via Whoscored), with Mina and Kurt Zouma next to him in defence. The duo of Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes make up the centre of midfield, whilst Ademola Lookman, Bernard, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison can run riot up top.

The real problem in the team comes at right-back, as Goodison Park icon Seamus Coleman, who has been at the club for almost a decade, appears to be declining as a footballer and in need of replacing. The Toffees’ supporters have not been happy on Twitter with how the Irishman has played at times this season, and they could do with a fresh face to replace the 30-year-old.

With that in mind, a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Meunier would be ideal.

Why would Meunier fit into Silva’s plans?

The Belgian international is a player of real pedigree and class, playing a key role in his country’s third-place finish at the World Cup last summer with a goal and two assists from right-back, as per FIFA.com.

The 27-year-old is known for his ability to make an impact in the final third, and would mirror the output of Digne over on the other side of defence if he were to arrive at Goodison Park.

Meunier has scored four goals and recorded three assists in all competitions so far this season (via Whoscored), but has had to battle with Thilo Kehrer and Dani Alves for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s team – however he definitely deserves to be starting week in, week out.

Everton took advantage of a similar situation when they signed Digne in the summer, as the Frenchman wasn’t getting much game time at Barcelona despite being a great player, so perhaps they could swoop in and do the same with the Belgian.

Pochettino names Janssen in first team squad, Tottenham fans react

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to some surprising squad news from Mauricio Pochettino, as the boss has brought Vincent Janssen back into the first team fold.

Janssen looked certain to follow Georges-Kevin N’Koudou out of North London on transfer deadline day, but the Dutch international has now been handed a new lease of life by Pochettino.

“When we now have two free places, with Nkoudou going to Monaco and Dembele to China, he’s (Janssen) going to be on the list. That is my decision, that he’s going to be involved with the first team from today,” Pochettino said as reported by ESPN’s Ben Pearce.

After the gaffer stripped the striker of the no. 9 shirt earlier this season, his future at the club looked very bleak indeed.

Pochettino, like most top managers, can often be quite stubborn once he makes his mind up about a player’s future, but it seems he has been forced to change his mind about Janssen thanks to the plague of injuries spreading through his attacking ranks.

The 24 year-old, who struck 32 times in 49 games for his former club AZ Alkmaar, has scored just six goals in 39 Tottenham appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

Leeds tracking Motherwell starlet Jake Hastie

[ad_pod ]

According to a report in The Daily Record, Leeds United are one of five English clubs who have been scouting Motherwell winger Jake Hastie following some impressive displays, and suggests that the Yorkshire outfit are already on the lookout for their next Jack Clarke.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Daily Record report that scouts from the Yorkshire outfit, Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and Sunderland all watched the 19-year-old in action in his side’s 2-1 win against St Mirren on Wednesday, and witnessed him score a brilliant goal.

The Daily Record says Motherwell are facing a big battle to keep hold of the exciting attacker this summer with the raft of interest in the player, whom they say could be available for a cut-price development fee at the end of the season.

The report adds that the teenager and the club are some distance apart in terms of agreeing a new contract, and his future at Fir Park Stadium hangs in the balance even though he has only made five first-team appearances for them this term, scoring an eye-catching four goals.

Leeds looking for their next Jack Clarke?

Quite possibly.

It was no secret that the Whites youngster was attracting interest from a number of top flight clubs including Tottenham Hotpsur during the January transfer window, as per The Mirror, and while they will be confident of keeping them if they win promotion, it could be more of a battle if they fail to.

Even if the Yorkshire outfit do keep Clarke at Elland Road they will still want to look for another young player that can make a similar impact to the one that the 18-year-old has already made for them in the future, and Hastie would certainly be that.

The two youngsters have the quality and potential to be on either wing for years to come if Leeds decide to make their move this summer.

Leeds fans delighted with Mateusz Klich performance

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United returned to winning ways in the Championship with a 2-1 home victory over Swansea City at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

It was a much-needed three points for the Whites, who have moved above Norwich City to the top of the table ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bolton Wanderers.

Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison scored the goals for the home side, but the performance of Mateusz Klich made a huge impression on the club’s supporters.

Klich had a pass success rate of 90% and made two tackles, according to WhoScored.

The 28-year-old has struggled to show his best form in recent weeks, but a number of the Leeds fans believe that the 6ft midfielder could be back to his best.

Sunderland fans react to potential exit of Aiden McGeady

It has been speculated that Aiden McGeady could earn a short-term deal at Middlesbrough or move on loan following the announcement last week that he would be placed on the transfer list.

Supporters are split on the news. Some would be pleased to see him leave if there was a fee involved, while others would hate it if one of the club’s best players left.

There are even some who no longer care about his situation, which is likely the result of the apathy that exists around the club, particularly in regard to the manager, who is to blame for McGeady being frozen out.

Calling all Premier League experts: Who do these unique statistics belong to? Find out below….

Here are some of the reactions from fans who are keen to see the club bring in some money for the Irishman’s services, what with there being a need to add fresh faces to the squad.

Some fans have used the opportunity to take aim at Parkinson and have once again suggested he lacks the spine to deal with difficult situations in the squad.

Losing a player of McGeady’s quality – he won the Player of the Year last term – would be a significant blow for a team lacking in creativity, though his departure would at least close a chapter on the whole situation.

He could also go for a decent fee given his quality, money which would help Sunderland move in the right direction once more and possibly allow them to get back on track for promotion.

In other more positive news, a recent change by Parkinson has led to improved performances from some players, and could allow Sunderland to move back in the right direction.

Sunderland fans want Roy Keane to replace Phil Parkinson as manager

Some Sunderland fans are disillusioned with Phil Parkinson and in recent weeks have set their sights on a managerial replacement, with Kevin Phillips previously the topic of such a discussion.

With results not improving and showing no signs of getting better soon it is unlikely that such debate will die down, and some supporters have pointed to Roy Keane as a potential replacement.

Fans likely have fond memories of the Irishman after he got the club promoted to the Premier League in 2007, and considering the lacklustre performances from some, he may be just what is needed to get the best out of players.

Some fans are more desperate than others for a change in personnel in the dugout, with one, in particular, suggesting that he’d travel to his house in order to give him a piggyback.

However, despite the negative results, Parkinson seems reasonably safe in his role, with Stewart Donald declaring that he is the best man for the job because of his knowledge of the league and has a lot of experience.

His talk of the transfer window also indicates there is still long-term thinking in place, with the owner perhaps keen not to have a quick turnover of managers.

Finances may also be an issue in getting rid of Parkinson, as there is a real need for new players in order to breathe new life into the side, especially in attack, which has declined considerably under the new boss.

No clues: Can you name all of these Premier League icons? Test your knowledge below…

The Black Cats have scored seven goals in the previous 11 matches and though fans may want Parkinson to go, they realise that is unlikely to become a reality soon.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Jan Vertonghen’s landmark

Jan Vertonghen is definitely on his way to becoming a true legend of Tottenham Hotspur.

Having already tallied 300 games for the club with Spurs’ Boxing Day clash against Brighton, the experienced defender has definitely been through thick and thin with this team.

With such a big threshold now crossed, the club’s official account were quick to congratulate him on social media, and with that post came a true sea of praise and love from their fans.

Some of the terms used to describe the 32-year-old included “incredible”, while some think that he has achieved the status of a “legend” already at this point.

You can see some of their initial reactions down below:

But the problem with Vertonghen is that his contract is due to expire in the summer of 2020 and judging by the reaction of many supporters, they really want him to sign an extension.

They were urging him to pen that new deal and stay at the club. By doing so, he would actually be following the steps of his teammate and partner in crime, Toby Alderweireld, who has already agreed a new extension with Spurs.

A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Needless to say, the fans loved that and they would obviously love to see the 32-year-old centre-back do the same…

It remains to be seen, however, whether Jose Mourinho can work his magic and convince another star to stay at the club.

Elsewhere, there are two key things Spurs should be looking to do once the market opens in January…

Spurs star Eriksen in terrific form against Norwich

Christian Eriksen was in terrific form for Tottenham Hotspur as they drew 2-2 with Norwich City on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

The 94-cap Denmark international grew into the game, much like his team, at Carrow Road.

He had 118 touches of the ball throughout the 90 minutes, a significantly higher number than any other player on the pitch in the east midlands.

He had four shots on goal and scored with one of them, sending an excellent free-kick past Tim Krul to cancel out Mario Vrancic’s opener.

Eriksen also registered a pass completion rate of 88% and provided two key passes in total.

While he did not complete a dribble, the 27-year-old made three interceptions and won one tackle in a strong showing.

Perhaps the only disappointing aspect of his performance was his lack of accuracy from corners; he did not lay on a single accurate cross from the flank.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

Difficult to replace

This could well be the last time we see Eriksen in a Spurs shirt.

The transfer window opens soon enough and there is every chance that a rival club – be it a Premier League outfit or a foreign team such as Juventus – could deem it worthwhile to table a bid. His contract, after all, expires in the summer.

If this was his last outing, he proved that he will be sorely missed – and that he will be a difficult player to replace. Eriksen was able to get his foot on the ball as Spurs pressed for a winner and was the chief creator on the pitch.

This time, it didn’t lead to a breakthrough and to three points but it gave them a chance.

If he does go, Spurs must find a direct replacement whether in January or in the summer, but they won’t find that task easy.

Meanwhile, Mourinho must bring the best out of one man at Spurs.
