Xherdan Shaqiri the biggest test yet of Jurgen Klopp’s ability to change mindsets

Jurgen Klopp’s signings for Liverpool have been so specific that they’re clearly as much about character as talent or skill sets. The Reds boss hasn’t just recruited the right players for his 4-3-3 system, but also the right players for his dressing room to create a sense of real comradery and collective growth at Anfield.

Nearly all his signings have been in their early twenties, and pretty much all of them naturally shy away from the limelight when they’re not on the pitch. There have been some huge transfer fees, record-breaking ones in fact for goalkeepers and centre-halves, but no huge egos or social media profiles accompanying them.

Instead, Klopp’s signings appear predominantly obsessed with self-improvement and are prepared to run through any brick wall put in front of them to achieve it.

But that’s exactly why Xherdan Shaqiri seems like such a strange addition to an otherwise completely feel-good dressing room. For starters, Liverpool’s most effective football last season came when their only true No.10, Philippe Coutinho, left the club for Barcelona in January, so there’s no obvious role for the Switzerland international in the Reds’ strongest starting XI.

Although we’ve already discussed why the contrast to Liverpool’s usual setup that Shaqiri offers could actually make the Reds a much better-rounded side over the course of a whole season, those arguments won’t stand up to much if the former Stoke talisman’s mindset isn’t in line with the rest of the squad.

After all, that’s always been the underlying drawback of an exciting footballer whose talent has never really come into question.

Shaqiri became a scapegoat at times for Stoke City last season, despite ranking top in their Premier League squad for goals and assists, but that caricature did have some basis in reality; every gorgeous goal and delicious setup was contradicted by 20 or 30-minute spells of aimless ambling around the middle to final third while the other 10 Potters on the pitch fought tooth and nail for Premier League survival.

At times too, Shaqiri’s frustration became painfully visible – throwing his arms up in the air or cursing the sky above him when he felt team-mates weren’t mirroring his own standards.

At Liverpool, that of course won’t be so much of a problem, but it still gives cause for concern. Shaqiri does have an ego about him, he does want to be the star man and he doesn’t have much interest in tracking back. Although Klopp has only increased the level of superstar talent in the team since arriving at Liverpool, he’s always prioritised the collective functionality of the team over the quirks of specific individuals.

For Shaqiri to slot in with the rest of the squad, especially if he’s to only play a bit-part role over the course of the season, he’ll need to embrace a new mindset. But we’ve seen the German change psyches before; Sadio Mane was deemed something of a prima donna as well during his time at Southampton, having developed a knack for scoring most of his goals in close proximity to transfer windows against top teams and often cut a frustrated figure even after Saints victories, but the Senegalese has only ever worked tirelessly under Klopp’s tutelage – even if selfishness in front of goal has taken over every now and then.

Shaqiri though, feels like the biggest test yet for Klopp – tactically and psychologically, he’s just cut from a different cloth from the rest of this industrious and dynamic Liverpool team. In that sense, while the Reds paid out an incredibly modest £13.5million to sign the attacking midfielder, he’s still very much an ambitious project, one that could give Klopp a variety of problems to solve.

But perhaps that’s part of the allure with bringing Shaqiri to Anfield, and the early signs are certainly encouraging, chiefly the stunning bicycle kick against Manchester United in pre-season.

A goal like that, especially in a rather uncompetitive friendly, has never been beyond Shaqiri’s capabilities, but we’ve also never seen that from him before either – actually getting into the box rather than waiting on the edge of it, and then attacking the ball with an incredibly athletic finish. The suggestion of self-improvement is already there.

Of course, pre-season is much different to an actual Premier League campaign, and the real evidence comes over the course of the next year. Can Klopp quell the ego of a workshy playmaker who will likely be a rotation option at best to make him a valuable part of a Liverpool squad that will expect to challenge for trophies next season, or will Shaqiri prove a poor fit for this Reds outfit in the manner he initially seems? It’s a key barometer of Klopp’s judgement of character and his ability to change them.

Arsenal urge the club to announce Ramsey as captain

As reported by Goal, new Arsenal boss Unai Emery has recently stated that he is hopeful that long-serving midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, will sign a new contract with the club.

The Welshman has been with the Gunners for a decade now, and has endured many ups and downs over the course of his ten seasons with the North London club. The highs have included three FA Cup final triumphs, with Ramsey bagging the winning goal in two of them.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278420″ player=”12034″ title=”Pochettino Has Been Betrayed By Daniel Levy”]

Now, the 27-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, and could leave the club on a free transfer next summer. Considering that the No. 8 is valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt, losing him as a free agent would be a disaster for the Gunners.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that the club can convince Ramsey to stay, and that offering him the captaincy, as a reward for such lengthy service, will sway him towards signing new terms…

Southampton fans dismayed by Stephens, Hoedt partnership

Southampton are yet to pick up a win in the Premier League this season following two frustrating matches.

Mark Hughes’s side were held to a goalless draw by Burnley on the opening weekend of the campaign.

On Saturday, the Saints were on the losing side of a 2-1 scoreline against Everton at Goodison Park.

Theo Walcott and Richarlison netted for the Toffees in the first half, and even though Danny Ings managed to score on his debut for Southampton, the coastal club were unable to perform a comeback.

While dissecting the action after the final whistle blew, some Southampton fans took aim at Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt.

The pair were partnered in defence by Hughes, who also started the duo against Burnley in their opening fixture.

Plenty of supporters were less than impressed by the defenders’ performances at Goodison, with many calling for the manager to make a big change at the back.

Newcastle fans want to sign Ben Arfa on a free

Loads of Newcastle fans have been discussing some potential free signings, and more than a few fans are eyeing a move for Hatem Ben Arfa.

The Chronicle have written a piece detailing several free agents that are available for Newcastle to sign, and loads of fans are eying up Ben Arfa.

The talented but frustrating Frenchman is available on a free signing after opting not to renew his contract with PSG.

Everyone knows Ben Arfa had his fair share of problems during his stint on Tyneside, but he also possesses elite match-wining ability, something the current Magpies’ squad is sorely lacking.

The 31-year-old was awful when he left Tyneside on loan to Hull, but his switch to Ligue 1 side Nice in 2016 completely revived his career.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”280645″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Dodgy De Gea & Arsenal’s MiniRevolution”]

After scoring 17 league goals in 34 appearances for Nice, he made the jump to PSG, where he made 23 league appearances during his first season.

Last season quickly went downhill though, and the former fan favourite is now searching for a new home.

He’s not exactly tailor-made for Rafael Benitez, but if the Spaniard could get him working hard enough to match his talent then it could be a match made in heaven.

Leeds talent Oriol Rey linked with surprising move to Spain

Leeds United could see young defensive talent Oriol Rey seal a move to Spain in the final week of the transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Deportes CMM.

What’s the word?

Signed from Barcelona’s academy last summer, Oriol Rey has proven to be a hit in Leeds United’s U23 ranks as the versatile 20-year-old starred in a midfield role for the Peacocks and played a crucial part in the team’s revival.

Rey was rewarded with a new contract in May but is still awaiting his full Leeds United competitive debut and faces a stern fight to establish himself in the first-team under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, particularly after the club’s thrilling start to the season.

An exit could be on the cards though as Deportes CMM state that Spanish second division side UB Conquense are eyeing a move to bring the youngster back to his homeland – and it is not stated whether a deal would be on loan or on a permanent basis.

Should Leeds sell?

Selling the 20-year-old after his impressive displays for the U23 side last season would certainly be a premature decision, but Leeds should consider allowing the midfielder to move on loan as regular first-team action looks unlikely at Elland Road.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257599″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Leeds’ opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]

Rey had an opportunity to catch the eye in pre-season but struggled against Oxford United, which would have damaged his first-team chances this season, and is at the age where regular senior action is crucial for his development.

The report claims a deal has been struck between the two clubs and Leeds fans must hope an agreement is only on a temporary basis, as a loan until January or the end of the season could prove to be ideal for all parties.

James Milner is Liverpool fans’ pick for August player of the month

Picking a single man to be the player of the month is always hard when you’ve won all of your games without conceding a goal. However, that’s exactly what Liverpool have done and the fans now have the tough decision of picking just one player who really stood out. In most fans eyes, that man should James Milner and you can vote for the 32-year-old on the Liverpool website.

So many different players can stake a claim to why they should win the award. Virgil van Dijk has been a monster at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. Alisson becker has looked calm and assured with the ball at his feet and in his hands. Naby Keita has settled into life and looked like a man possessed with his work rate in midfield. Sadio Mane has scored three goals and got the club off to a flier. There are at least five players who deserve the award, however, only one can win it.

That’s where James Milner comes in. The humble and unassuming midfielder has dragged the club through the rough patches they’ve faced. His grit, determination and know-how is invaluable to Liverpool and he always steps up when needed. The ex-Manchester City man opened his account for the season against Crystal Palace with a well-taken penalty and he’s been relentless in making sure his side’s standards haven’t dropped until the final whistle, which is why so many fans are calling for him to be named the club’s player of the month.

You can read The Reds’ calls for Milner to be the August player of the month here:

The Reds have loved seeing Milner do what he does and they’ll be keen to see more from the 32-year-old as the season rolls on.

Celtic must sign 6ft 8in target man Lacina Traore to bolster attacking options

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers should sign free-agent and ex-Everton striker Lacina Traore to bolster his attacking options for the multiple fronts that the Bhoys will be competing on this season.

What’s the story?

Having sold star striker Moussa Dembele to Lyon for £19.7m on deadline day, Rodgers is now left with just Leigh Griffiths and younsgters Odsonne Edouard and Michael Johnston as his options up front.

Dembele will be extremely difficult for the Northern Irish boss to replace, after the 22-year-old netted 51 times in 94 appearances for the Parkhead side since joining from Fulham in the summer of 2016.

Fellow Frenchman Edouard spent last season on loan with the Bhoys from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and his 11 goals and four assists clearly convinced Rodgers and the Celtic board to open their chequebooks to bring the 20-year-old in on a permanent basis.

Different options

Bringing in Traore though would provide Celtic with a completely different option and would allow them to play with a traditional target man when necessary thanks to his huge 6ft 8in frame. The 28-year-old is currently without a club having left Monaco in the summer following a four year stint in the principality.

However, he only managed 35 games and 11 goals for Monaco as he was shipped out on loan four times, the first of which was to Everton for the second half of the 2013/14 season. Traore does have an impressive goalscoring record throughout his career for a striker who’s job is often to hold the ball up and bring others into a game.

He is also a full international for Ivory Coast and won the African Cup of Nations in 2015. A striker with this sort of experience would be ideal for Rodgers now and would be the perfect option for his squad.

West Ham fans react to Declan Rice update

[ad_pod ]

Declan Rice’s existing contract with West Ham United will expire at the end of this season.

The 19-year-old made 31 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers during a breakthrough 2017-18 campaign.

The teenager has also already made two first-team appearances for the London club this season, although he has not featured in the Premier League since the opening weekend of the campaign.

Rice is currently locked in a contract stand-off with West Ham, and it is understood that the Hammers are not prepared to meet the defender’s wage demands.

The West Ham fans have been offering their views on the situation, and it would be fair to say that they are desperate for their club to secure Rice’s future.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”288872″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafas Pub Facts Murray The Magician & Desperately Seeking Zaha”]

The Hammers already have a bloated wage bill, however, and it seems that the club are standing firm with what they believe to be a fair offer for the 6ft 1in ace.

A selection of the reaction from the West Ham supporters can be seen below:

Report hands Spurs Hugo Lloris boost

Tottenham Hotspur will be without first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for Saturday’s crunch clash with Liverpool but a report from L’Equipe via SportWitness provides a positive spin to his injury update.

What’s the word?

Mauricio Pochettino’s side return from the international break looking to bounce back to form after suffering a defeat at the hands of Watford last time out but face a difficult task against Liverpool – especially with Hugo Lloris unavailable.

The World Cup winner missed France’s two fixtures during the international break and Tottenham stated on Thursday that the experienced stopper would be unavailable for ‘several weeks’ with a thigh injury, providing a huge blow with the return of the Champions League on the horizon.

H0wever, reports from L’Equipe via SportWitness state that Lloris will instead only face a short period on the sidelines and they expect the goalkeeper to return to training in ten days time – and tip him to be available for selection against Huddersfield Town.

That would still mean Lloris would miss the games against Inter Milan, Brighton and Watford, the latter of which he would have been unlikely to play in as it is a Carabao Cup tie.

Who should you believe?

The club v country debate has always attracted headlines but this injury angle is a tad different, although the reality is things will not change too much for Spurs and their plans for the weeks ahead – and it would be wise not to risk him against Huddersfield.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”292154″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Real football is back with our PL & EFL accumulators”]

Spurs’ clash with the Terriers slots in right before Pochettino’s side host Lionel Messi and company in their second Champions League match and they would surely want Hugo Lloris to be the man between the sticks for the match against Barcelona.

Ideally, Spurs would then want Lloris not to feature in France’s ties with Iceland and Germany in October’s international break but they may have a problem persuading the French Football Association not to call up their first-choice stopper.

Sarri’s target of 40 goals could be what makes Hazard the best in the world

Four months into his post at Napoli, Maurizio Sarri told Gonzalo Higuain that if he didn’t win the Ballon d’Or, he would only have himself to blame.

The Chelsea manager’s recent remarks about Eden Hazard don’t combine carrot and stick in quite the same way, but the intention is replicated. Once again, Sarri has started a new reign by publicly laying down the most ambitious of challenges to the most talented player at his disposal.

In many ways, it epitomises Sarri’s view of the beautiful game. The ultimate objective is simple enough to summarise in just a sentence, like retaining possession at all costs or winning the Premier League Golden Boot, but the actual execution is a lot more difficult. Nonetheless, when your philosophy or ambitions can be abbreviated to less words than you have fingers, the message and the expectation is clear for everybody.

But it shouldn’t be underestimated how significant an achievement it would be for Sarri to guide Hazard’s transformation into a 40-goal player, pushing his scoring to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi territory. The Belgium international has never scored more than 19 goals across all competitions in a single season of his Chelsea career, and has even admitted he doesn’t possess the same burning determination to find the net as many contemporaries of his position and calibre.

“I don’t care about the number of goals I get. Statistics aren’t important for me.”

For Hazard, there’s as much beauty in creating goals, in leaving defenders dumbfounded with a piece of ingenious, intuitive skill, in simply manipulating everything that’s going on around him. Some would argue that’s why he’s always been just outside the bracket of Messi and Ronaldo, albeit ever-threatening to break into it, and occasionally given the perception that he’s merely coasting through a glistening career that could be reaching far greater heights.

But even without that driven hunger to make the onion bag continuously ripple, this season is different for Hazard. First and foremost, he enters it off the back of the greatest achievement of his career, taking Belgium to their best ever finish at a World Cup. Whereas other Premier League stars who reached the latter stages of the tournament in Russia have returned leggy and fatigued like Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Hazard seems rejuvenated by the whole experience.

Chelsea deserve credit there too; just as the media was whipping itself into a frenzy over rumours of a late summer move to Real Madrid, only further exacerbated by Thibaut Courtois refusing to return to training, they allowed Hazard an extra few days off at a moment of heightened political sensitivity.

It appeared naïve and certainly made it more difficult for Sarri to talk to the press, but the Blues are now reaping the rewards. Psychologically and physically, Hazard seems completely refreshed – five goals in five appearances, just three being starts, is pretty strong evidence of that.

Equally as big a factor though in making that 40-goal challenge genuinely plausible is the philosophy Sarri has brought to Stamford Bridge. It seems rather incredible that an attacking player so fluid and intuitive has only ever really worked under pragmatic managers until this point, but that’s precisely the case with the very brief exception of Roberto Di Matteo.

Jose Mourinho once vilified the forward for failing to track a full-back against Atletico Madrid, resulting in Chelsea’s elimination from the Champions League, rather than focusing on the incredible output he’d given the team that season – namely the third-most key passes per game and most dribbles per game of any Premier League player – which tells all about where the Portuguese’s priorities lie and how he saw fit to utilise the most talismanic talent at his disposal.

“Eden is the kind of player that is not so mentally ready to look back to his left-back and to leave his life for him. If you see the first goal of Atlético you completely understand where the mistake was and why we conceded that goal. The perfect team at the top level cannot make these kinds of mistakes.”

Antonio Conte, in fairness, gave Hazard a much freer role. But certainly last season, and certainly during Conte’s delve into a 3-5-1-1 formation, that freedom came at a cost of doing practically everything on his own. Eight Chelsea players sat deep, the striker laid the ball off to him and then the Belgian was tasked with somehow weaving through the rest of the opposition.

This season is already proving markedly different. Chelsea are averaging 2.8 goals a game, slightly more than their rate for the 2009/10 season when Carlo Ancelotti’s side set the previous record for Premier League goals in a single campaign. There’s no need to track back, because Chelsea’s full-backs are pushing so high offering any defensive cover on the flanks would be fundamentally pointless, and Hazard’s able to take up more central positions where he can bounce off team-mates in close proximity.

Pedro drifts inside, Matteo Kovacic pushes forward from midfield, Olivier Giroud offers endless layoffs, Marcos Alonso is always attacking the space on the overlap and even N’Golo Kante’s getting into the box. The level of offensive intent is nothing like Hazard has experienced before at Chelsea.

But perhaps too, Hazard is becoming a little hungrier for goals, a little more direct in what should be peak years of his career. The 27-year-old’s statistics extrapolated across the whole season highlight how plausible that 40-goal target is for Hazard should he maintain something near to his current form – even if we bring dips and potential injuries into the equation, he’s averaged 50 games per season throughout his entire Chelsea career so anything above 30 strikes in the Premier League alone would put him in great stead to hit that milestone across all competitions – however, they also suggest the dynamics of his game are changing slightly.

Should his current rates continue, while Hazard will finish up with exactly the same number of key passes as he did last season, he’ll actually complete less dribbles and take almost one shot at goal more per game.

It insinuates a slightly more selfish Hazard, one who looks up at the goal before he turns his head to bring others into play or tries to beat opponents, and one who will have some kind of goalscoring target in the back of his mind.

That subtle but important change in mentality could be what finally transforms Hazard from the best of the rest to Messi and Ronaldo’s rightful successor.
