John Barnes Exclusive: Moyes could be the man for Everton

We haven’t even reached November just yet and we’ve already seen three managerial casualties in the Premier League, Ronald Koeman representing the most-high profile after Everton decided to pull the plug on his troubled tenure earlier this week.

The Dutchman guided the Merseysiders to a much-improved seventh place last season. But a summer of unprecedented spending at Goodison Park has only exacerbated the worrying start to the current campaign, Everton plummeting all the way into the relegation zone with just eight points earned from nine outings.

But Liverpool legend John Barnes, speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, has revealed he was disappointed not to see Koeman be given more time. The Bonus Code Bets ambassador said; “If he’d won a few more games he’d probably be safe. But we’ve seen it already this season with Craig Shakespeare at Leicester and the other Dutch manager in the league, Ronald de Boer. This is Premier League football, this is what happens; I always feel managers should be given more time but obviously this is modern day football, so we have to get on with it.”

And Barnes sees the failure to sign a replacement for Romelu Lukaku during the summer as Everton’s ultimate mistake under Koeman; “Everton should have replaced Romelu Lukaku. If you look at Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson, if they had a top striker playing in front of them who can create space and score goals then Everton would be a top team. They play decent football, but they really don’t have any cutting edge up front. Asking Dominic Calvert-Lewin to carry that mantle as a young boy is a bit much so I think that Everton have fallen away just for the fact that they didn’t replace Lukaku. I think if they’d done that they’d be in a much better position.”

With an imbalanced squad and valuable points already dropped, the Everton board have a huge decision to make in regards to the next manager – it will have to be the perfect appointment to turn their lacklustre campaign around. The former England international believes ex-gaffer David Moyes would be a wise choice, but doesn’t see why David Unsworth shouldn’t get a chance to prove himself.

He told Football FanCast; “Well, David Moyes knows Everton and Everton know him. The fans are like that and he knows the club inside out – I think that would be the best decision. But David Unsworth obviously wants the job. He’s done good work with the U23s and the players like him so we could see a situation where gets the job and they give him six months. So I think Moyes possibly, but I don’t see why they wouldn’t give the job to Unsworth – he knows the players, he knows the team.”

In Focus: Moyes has a decision to make as Carvalho still wants West Ham move

According to reports on Portuguese media outlet Correio da Manha, West Ham United target and Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho has a big-money offer to move to China, but Sport Witness report that he would prefer to join a Premier League club.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Correio da Manha says that Carvalho’s father Simao was handed a proposal from a Chinese Super League club worth €6m (currently around £5.4m) per season for four years a few weeks ago.

Correio da Manha reports that the Portugal international is unlikely to extend his contract with Sporting even though club president Bruno de Carvalho is hoping he will, with Simao still unhappy that a summer move to West Ham fell through.

The report adds that while the Irons offered to pay €35m (currently around £31.3m) across two years, Bruno de Carvalho wanted the full amount paid in 12 months.

Sport Witness believes that the 25-year-old would much rather play in England than China, meaning it will be up to West Ham to see off any interest from China in the January transfer window – if new boss David Moyes wants the player.

How has Carvalho done this season?

Despite the disappointment of his move to the Premier League failing to materialise and some injury issues, the Portugal international has made 10 appearances in all competitions for Sporting so far this term.

He certainly hasn’t let his performances or attitude drop either having captained the side in eight of those 10 outings, including a 3-2 win away against Olympiacos in the Champions League.

Would West Ham still be interested?

It’s difficult to say.

Obviously the change in manager from Slaven Bilic to Moyes may play a part and it could be down to whether the Scot likes Carvalho enough or not.

That said, the central/defensive midfield positions do seem to be a weakness for the Irons right now and the addition of the 25-year-old, who would provide a barrier in front of a leaky backline, could prove to be crucial in the club’s relegation battle.

Finding a fee and payment plan that would suit Sporting Lisbon could be a bigger problem though, especially as the two parties fell out over the deal back in the summer.

In Focus: Wilshere will struggle to get what he wants at Arsenal

Jack Wilshere has admitted that he may have to leave Arsenal in January to keep his World Cup dream alive, reports the Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

The midfielder, who is out of contract next summer, returned to the Gunners in the summer following a loan spell at Bournemouth.

A fractured leg delayed his season, but he is now fighting fit and has made nine appearances so far.

Manager Arsene Wenger has started Wilshere in the Europa League and Carabao Cup, but the midfielder has made just two substitute outings in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old plans to hold talks with the Frenchman and has admitted that he may have to call time on his 16-year association with the Gunners.

The Daily Mail quotes Wilshere as saying:

“I think we will have to talk about that. We have got a month until then and me and the boss will probably have a conversation before then and see what happens because obviously when January comes I have only got six months left on my contract. We will see what happens between now and then, I will talk to the boss.”

Is it time to give up on Arsenal?

The midfielder is no youngster anymore and if he was to be an integral part of Wenger’s team, he would be making more appearances in the top flight.

Injuries have hampered Wilshere’s progress over the years, and even though it is through no fault of his own, being regularly injured at a club like Arsenal will make it that much harder for him to break through when fit.

The midfielder has indicated that he may have to leave in order to give him a chance of making England’s World Cup team for Russia 2018.

Gareth Southgate would consider Wilshere if he gets regular game time elsewhere, but his performances would need to be top quality week by week in order to gain a starting spot for his country.

In order for Wilshere’s club career to improve, he needs to find a club that will give him more chances in the first team.

Everton fans react as they draw Liverpool away in the FA Cup

Everton were drawn away to arch-rivals Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup draw on Monday night, and Toffees fans aren’t optimistic ahead of the January tie.

Despite successive wins and clean sheets against West Ham United and Huddersfield Town in the last week, the Blue side of Merseyside have endured a hugely disappointing season and they have conceded 43 goals in 20 matches in the Premier League and Europa League group stages.

Sam Allardyce’s men certainly won’t relish coming up against Jurgen Klopp’s side, who boast the Premier League’s top goalscorer in Mohamed Salah as well as other attacking options like Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, away from home.

Everton supporters were quick to have their say on the dreaded draw via social media, and while one said “get on to Bournemouth in January and see if Gosling wants a transfer” after he scored the winner against the Reds in the same competition in 2009, another simply said “want to jump in the Mersey”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

10 of the best images from Colombia vs England

In case you – somehow – haven’t heard, football is coming home. There’s just the formality of getting the actual games out of the way first.

England dominated throughout against Colombia in their last 16 World Cup tie, remaining calm in the face of gamesmanship, weak refereeing and the sheer weight of their awful penalty shootout record to deservedly set up a quarter-final clash with Sweden.

It was a test of character and belief. Colombia should have been down to 10 men in the first half when Wilmar Barrios headbutted Jordan Henderson.

Jordan Pickford produced the save of the tournament to deny Mateus Uribe in stoppage-time. England had won the game once and then had to win it all over again, via a first ever World Cup shootout win.

It was a historic night for England and we’ve collected ten of the best images from it, to relive the story a slightly different way…

Mark Geiger set the tone early on a night where he lost control of the match, allowing Colombia’s players – in particular Barrios and Juan Cuadrado – to get away with persistent fouling.

Yerry Mina, who netted the late equaliser, quite clearly manhandled Raheem Sterling in the opening stages of the match but Geiger took an eternity to blow his whistle.

It was a blatant foul, creating an almost comical image, and a sign of things to come from both Geiger and Colombia.

Speaking of manhandling, Colombia followed the lead of Tunisia and Panama by attempting to grab Harry Kane at corners.

The African outfit got away with it, the Central Americans didn’t and neither did former Aston Villa man Carlos Sanchez, midway through the second half.

After yet more gamesmanship as Colombia crowded Geiger to delay the spotkick, Kane remained composed to convert his penalty straight down the middle and send pubs across the country into euphoria.

With Colombia failing to threaten and England doing an impressive job of killing the game off, it looked as if that Kane strike would be enough to get the job done.

That was until Mateus Uribe walloped a strike from an implausible distance, which was destined for the top corner until Jordan Pickford produced the save of the tournament to keep it out.

Thibaut Courtois mocked Pickford after England’s 1-0 defeat to Belgium, but the Everton man produced heroics just a day after his Chelsea counterpart conceded two avoidable goals against Japan. And he wasn’t done yet…

After Uribe smashed his penalty against the bar to get Jordan Henderson, whose penalty miss should not overshadow a classy, gutsy performance over 120, out of jail, Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca to put England on the edge of victory.

His penalty stop was not as good as his save in normal time but it was still an impressive show of agility under the most acute of pressure, produced when his country needed him most.

After the Belgium game, there were some who questioned Pickford’s place in the side but Southgate kept the faith and was rewarded handsomely.

England, just as they did in normal time, had the game in the palm of their hands and Eric Dier, the man who had been brought on to help them shut it out was the man handed the responsibility.

It was a surprise when he smashed in that free-kick at Euro 2016 against Russia and once more, he stunned the nation with his technique and composure under pressure, calmly slotting past North London rival David Ospina to spark genuine chaos on the streets of England.

It wasn’t just back home where there was chaos. After two hours of keeping their heads under the most intense of pressure, England’s players were finally able to let loose once Dier slotted home.

The winning penalty sparked the traditional race to the penalty area, for everyone apart from Henderson, who just like Cristiano Ronaldo in Moscow a decade ago, fell to the turf and thanked his lucky stars that his team-mates dug him out of a hole.

Players will often talk about how they’re fans themselves as well and often it feels hollow. But just look at the intense passion on Pickford’s face as he is embraced by Kieran Trippier and captain Kane.

It is the look that will have been on millions of faces up and down the country; relief, mixed in with pure joy and pride to create quite the image.

This England team has reconnected with the country and one reason why is that they haven’t been scared to show just how much this World Cup means to them.

Another factor in England’s new-found popularity is their togetherness. There are no cliques, no big egos, just a united squad of players working hard and enjoying the opportunity of a lifetime that has been laid out in front of them.

Substitutes piling onto the pitch to celebrate is a recurring feature of the World Cup, which only adds to the spectacle, but for players who have trained hard but been left in the shadows, moments like Dier’s represent an opportunity to genuinely enjoy themselves.

When the game went to penalties, given England’s woeful record, many observers would have put money on it being fans wearing the Three Lions staring into space, wondering where it all went wrong, once the spot-kicks were over.

Just as Colombian fans will look at Gareth Southgate’s army and think, ‘that could have been us’, England fans, who have suffered more than their fair share of penalty heartache, will have the exact same thoughts and be counting their blessings that this time, it proved to be different.

Southgate retained his calm demeanour throughout the match; encouraging his players to keep their heads, keep playing and probing but, quite rightly, allowed himself some intense celebrations post-match.

It is quite clear to see how much being England manager at a World Cup means to him. He is the man who has got England playing passing football, got them connected with the fans again and made us believe that football may actually come home this summer.

More celebrations like these against Sweden on Saturday, please…

Sunderland need a striker and this 27-goal machine will get them back to the Championship

It’s been a tough few years for Sunderland fans but with Jack Ross at the helm, there may finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.Â

Once a solid Premier League club, Sunderland slumped to last in the Championship table last year. With last season’s dire form in mind, the club has gone under some serious surgery by bringing in Jack Ross as manager and Stewart Donald coming in as the new owner replacing Ellis Short.

A few players will likely be leaving the club this summer but one they should be seriously considering is Peterborough’s hotshot striker, Jack Marriot.

In partnership with Marcus Maddison, Marriot formed one of the most deadly partnerships in English football. The pair scoredÂ35 goals for the Posh last season and will be attracting plenty of interest this summer. As League One’s leading scorer, Marriot is hot property and although he will likely leave the club, Sunderland will have to pay big money to get him as confirmed by the club’s chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

At only 23, the striker still has a few years to go before he even hits his prime and could well be tempted to a move to a club the size of Sunderland. In the Black Cats’ case, it’s still unsure if Joel Asoro or Josh Maja will move on after rejecting new deals to stay at the club.

It will take a big bid but if Sunderland signed Marriot, they’d be getting a quick striker who makes great runs, finishes well and is also a bit of a fox in the box.

What do you reckon Sunderland fans?Â

Sturaro exactly the kind of player to improve Newcastle United this season

Newcastle fans will be pleased with their business in the transfer window so far but will be hoping for some more arrivals before deadline day.

After impressing on loan, Mikel Merino and Martin Dubravka both completed permanent moves to St. James Park to bolster Rafael Benitez’s squad next season. The Spaniard also landed Swansea midfielder, Ki Seung-Yung on a free transfer after his contracts with the Swans expired. The Newcastle faithful will be hoping Mike Ashley backs the former Liverpool boss with some transfer funds as we approach deadline day.

The biggest move of the transfer window so far has seen Cristiano Ronaldo complete a historic move from Real Madrid to Juventus for around £99m. The Old Lady may be forced to offload a number of their star players in order to finance the deal for the Portuguese superstar. And following the arrival of Emre Can, Stefano Sturaro could be sold this summer.

Valued at £6.75m by Transfermarkt, the Italian could be an excellent signing for the Magpies. Sturaro has failed to break into the first-team at Juventus since arriving from Genoa back in 2014. He made 19 appearances in all competitions last season but started only seven games in the Serie A.

The Italian is a strong, combative midfielder who will have no issues adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. While he is not the most technically gifted footballer, he will slot seamlessly into the Newcastle midfield alongside Jonjo Shelvey. Potentially available at a great price, Sturaro could prove to be an astute piece of business.

Newcastle fans, thoughts?

West Ham fans all want Kouyate sold

Manuel Pellegrini has reportedly not yet decided on the future of Cheikhou Kouyate, but West Ham fans are all agreeing it’s time to cash in.

Manuel Pellegrini and the West Ham board have been very busy this summer, but that could be bad news for some players already at the club.

One such player is Kouyate, who was extremely underwhelming and disappointing last season.

The towering midfielder made 33 Premier League appearances last season, scoring twice, but it seems fans would prefer to see a midfield duo of Jack Wilshere and Pedro Obiang this season.

According to popular Hammers insider ExWHUEmployee, Pellegrini will decide on the midfielder’s future when he returns from his extended World Cup break.

Fans are ready to cut ties as they start a new era under Pellegrini, as the 28 year-old just simply wasn’t up to scratch last season.

Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the Senegalese international could fetch a decent fee, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Leeds fans on Twitter buzzing as Bamford signs for an initial £7m

Striker Patrick Bamford has completed his move from Middlesbrough to fellow Championship side Leeds United, and fans of the Whites have been getting excited on Twitter.

According to Sky Sports, the fee for Bamford is an initial £7m that will rise to £10m for the young Englishman who netted 11 goals in 39 league appearances for Boro last season.

The 24-year-old began his career at Chelsea and spent a series of loan spells in the Championship, including one at Middlesbrough during the 2014/15 season where he was named the league’s player of the year after scoring 17 goals.

After three more loan deals, Boro went back to Chelsea to sign Bamford on a permanent deal in January 2017.

Leeds appointed Marcelo Bielsa as manager this summer and the fans were initially frustrated with the lack of signings to support their new boss. However, they have recently added Barry Douglas from Wolves and have completed loan deals for Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman from Chelsea and Jack Harrison from Manchester City.

Check out some of the best reactions from Leeds fans to the signing of Bamford below.

Newcastle simply must seek to re-sign West Ham target Hatem Ben Arfa

According to a recent report from Foot365 (via Sports Mole), West Ham are interested in signing Hatem Ben Arfa this summer. The 31-year-old left French giants Paris Saint-Germain at the expiration of his contract last month after two years at the Parc des Princes, but with just 32 appearances to show for his time in the French capital, it wasn’t much of a surprise that they let him go earlier this summer.

And Manuel Pellegrini’s Hammers are reportedly keen on the £4.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), yet Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United should seek to join and indeed win the race to re-sign the winger, in what could prove to be a transfer masterstroke.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 31-year-old became known to English football fans during his prior stint at St James’ Park between 2011 and 2015, what with the France international scoring 14 goals and laying on 16 assists in 86 appearances for the Magpies.

And while those are hardly ground-breaking figures, Ben Arfa produced many flashes of brilliance during his time on Tyneside to underline his undoubted talent, talent that could be honed in on to really get the best out of him.

In fact, Leicester boss Claude Puel was able to do just that while in charge of Nice a few years ago, as Ben Arfa produced the most consistent season of his career in netting 18 times and laying on seven assists for the French side during the 2015/16 campaign – thus, he is capable of producing the goods on a regular basis.

And in a Newcastle side looking for that extra bit of creativity and flair to really push on next season, Ben Arfa could be that man, and given he’d be available on a free, a deal could well be of interest to owner Mike Ashley.

The Magpies have already secured Kenedy on loan for another season, but with the future of Matt Ritchie far from certain and Jacob Murphy doing little to convince of his capabilities last term, there may be room for another attacker in Benitez’s squad.

And were Benitez able to get the very best out of Ben Arfa, like he was able to do with the likes of Kenedy, Jonjo Shelvey, and Ayoze Perez last season, the Frenchman could be a huge asset to the Newcastle manager next season.

In fact, joining and indeed winning the race for Ben Arfa ahead of West Ham could turn out to be a transfer masterstroke by the North East giants.
