PL25: When Liverpool and Newcastle astounded us all over again

To celebrate 25 years of the Premier League each week in Football Fancast we’re going to be looking back at a memorable game that took place on the corresponding date. This time out we revisit a mirror image of an out-and-out classic.

One of the joys of doing this series is highlighting some incredible games in the Premier League’s firmament that perhaps have been forgotten with the passing of time. The following is one such example, but here – uniquely – it is not time that has diminished its status but by it being overshadowed into near insignificance by a predecessor.

The game in question pits Liverpool against Newcastle at Anfield in the late 90s. After a pulsating ding-dong affair the home side triumph 4-3 courtesy of a Robbie Fowler double and a highly dramatic last minute winner, a death-blow that sends a former Liverpool legend to his knees in utter despair in the away dug-out.

If that all sounds extremely familiar that’s hardly surprising: after all, the goal-fest of 1996 – complete with the iconic image of Kevin Keegan slumped onto an advertising hoarding unable to comprehend what he was witnessing – is often voted the greatest game in the modern era. Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp title decider against QPR may beat it hands down for momentary drama but over the course of its 90 minutes the 1996 thriller was a constant assault on the senses that had everything and more. For twists and turns alone it remains unparalleled.

Only here’s the thing: a year later both teams did it all again, and arguably the sequel was even better.

Every element of the first classic was repeated, to the point where it stretched plausibility. Once again Newcastle arrived with the scent of a title in their nostrils with Liverpool – just like the previous April – in the hunt too but significantly further back. Once again kamikaze defending from both sides produced chances in abundance and seven goals that shook the TV camera on the gantry – and once again that included a highly charged late decider for the Reds. Now though it was Kenny Dalglish looking on gob-smacked having taken over the reins in the north-east that January from a spent and drained Keegan.

Even with 20 years distance it is still difficult to accept that this all happened; that lightning struck twice; that a fixture could unleash such mayhem and frolics and PlayStation insanity and then ten months later produce almost an exact carbon copy of it. Yet it did and perhaps it did so because around that period whenever Liverpool encountered Newcastle they brought out the best and worst in each other. For those involved it must have been traumatic. For neutrals it bordered on the magical.

So why, you may ask, is the second instalment of crazy superior to the original? Simply put because the scoring order is better even if that analysis is crueller on the Magpies.

In April 1996 free-scoring Newcastle traded blows with Roy Evans’ Spice Boys and alternated leads. The following March Liverpool got their noses in front and then extended their advantage to three goals to the good at the break. It was, under normal circumstances, game over with McManaman, Berger and Fowler chipping away at the visitors title credentials and looking to put their own hopes back in contention into the bargain.

Except Newcastle came back, and they did so because David James chose this night of all nights to be at his most calamitous. In the 71st minute he spilled a routine tester from Keith Gillespie to make the game a contest again and then late on, as the contest threatened to die away to normality he charged from his area into no man’s land. There he encountered Faustino Asprilla whose lunge for the ball knocked it sailing past the hapless keeper into an unguarded net.

If anything defined that magnificently flawed Newcastle side it was their steadfast belief in miracles but with minutes becoming seconds surely here it was a sensational proposition too far? Not so; not in this fixture; not when two of the most entertaining but brittle sides collided with not a handbrake to be seen.

In the final moments of a high-octane, rip-roaring encounter the ball popped free in the Liverpool box and Warren Barton poked it home. It took a replay to determine how and considering James’ nightmare second half it should surprise precisely no-one to learn that it squeezed between his legs.

And that was that, everyone agreed so, because another 4-3 would just be plain weird; the fates revealing that they’re not actually in charge of anything at all. Yet here it came with a flat-low cross perfectly pitched for Robbie Fowler to nod powerfully past Shaka Hislop. The unbridled carnage that ensued contained more than a whiff of disbelief about it.

At the very least the amazing events that took place at Anfield on March 10th 1997 deserve to be viewed as a companion piece to what went before it. It was inferior in no way other than it occurred second. It should forever be scorched into our memories.

What happened next?

For a consecutive season Newcastle finished second to Manchester United, a position gauged as a disappointment at the time yet they would not reach this peak again.

Liverpool’s propensity to drop points against lesser fare cost them dearly and they ended the campaign level on points with Newcastle and Arsenal but behind on goal difference. According to their defender Mark Wright, “That was the season we should have won it and we all know that”.

[ad_pod ]

Mark Hughes could be the man to get the best out of Sofiane Boufal

Overall, Sofiane Boufal has been an immense disappointment during his time in the Premier League. The incredible ease in which the Moroccan winger ghosts past defenders highlights his obvious natural ability, but it has only been demonstrated in fits and spurts during his time at Southampton and the former Lille star is nowhere near living up to the comparisons with Eden Hazard that accompanied him upon arriving at St. Mary’s in summer 2016.

Yet, glimmers of Boufal’s technical quality are never far from breaking to the surface and there were a fair few on Sunday as Saints encountered Wigan in a tricky FA Cup quarter-final. Although it took Southampton until after half time to truly get going in the match and although the Latics aren’t the most formidable opposition on paper, Boufal was one of his side’s more effective players before being subbed off in the 64th minute, ranking first for dribbles, second for chances created and third for attempts at goal throughout the Saints team.

Of course, it could be a typical case of a player on the outskirts of the starting XI improving his form to try and impress his new manager, with Mark Hughes appointed as Mauricio Pellegrino’s successor during the week. But there is a more optimistic perspective to take here, considering the positive impact the Welshman had on Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri’s careers at Stoke – transforming them from inconsistent players of undoubted talent into indispensible members of his team.

Boufal – who Transfermarkt value at £13.5million – falls into that category of frustratingly mercurial attacking player as well, and if Hughes can bring the best out of him during a difficult run-in that will decide Southampton’s top flight status, the 24-year-old could emerge as a key influence in the south coast outfit’s bid for survival.

PL25: Norwich triumph in a relegation thriller made unimportant by real life

To celebrate 25 years of the Premier League each week in Football Fancast we’re going to be looking back at a memorable game that took place on the corresponding date. This time out we revisit a must-win clash for two sides desperate to avoid the drop.

The vernacular used for relegation battles can err towards the dramatic, suggesting that for the clubs involved it is a matter of life and death. Two years ago, ahead of a rip-roaring bottom four encounter between Norwich City and Newcastle United, the Canaries striker Dieumerci Mbokani presumably had little time for such hyperbole.

Ten days prior to the game at Carrow Road, that if not a draw threatened to root the away side firmly in the mire or else drag the East Anglian club back into danger, the Congolese frontman was due to fly from Brussels Airport when three co-ordinated suicide bombings occurred that killed 32 civilians. It can only be imagined what witnessing such atrocities at close quarters does to the mind and senses. For some the shock is hard and immediate. For others it waits, insidiously.

With club football on an international break it was an obvious decision to allow Mbokani to return home to be with his family though with such a decent institution as Norwich we can assume a period of convalescence would have been afforded him anyway. But now there was Newcastle to deal with, revived under the very recent appointment of Rafa Benitez. Now there was the inconsequential footballing matter of life and death to contend with. With relegation a very real concern Alex Neil needed his top scorer back.

The 30-year-old was this game’s man of the match; that should be stated from the top. Whether he dug into reserves or temporarily buried his nightmares deep down for 90 minutes, whatever it took to produce a formidable performance that’s what Mbokani did and he bullied throughout a back two of Chancel Mbemba and Steven Taylor, a duo not usually given to ceding ground. With Naismith and Brady scheming and scurrying around him the visitors had their hands full and ultimately it was this that proved to be the difference in an otherwise ding-dong affair driven by desperation on both sides.

The first half was frantic in keeping with what was at stake. Benitez must have hated that. All that pragmatic preparation; all that calm, analytical insight imparted to his new players, only to result in this high-octane chaos. Real Madrid must have seemed like an awfully long time ago. Chances were at a premium and when they arose they were snatched at and squandered. Tackles were tasty.

With the whistle in the referee’s lips Norwich centre-back Timm Klose headed home from a set-piece in first half stoppage time. Benitez would have really hated that.

The second period resumed with the same intensity only now it was broken up by spells of steady, probing passing from the visitors and from one such passage of play a cross was floated over by Andros Townsend and Aleksandar Mitrovic guided it past the flailing arm of John Ruddy. Had this encounter taken place in autumn a draw could now be assumed with both sides content with a point. Not today though. Today a draw was no good to either of them.

[ad_pod ]

Three minutes later, Mbokani took possession out wide on the left and cut in with real purpose. He wrong-footed Janmaat with ease and fired home a rocket with so much meaning behind it that you suspect Karl Darlow was diving out of its way for self-preservation. It was an exocet. It was an exorcism of grief.

Neatly that would have been that but there is rarely anything neat about relegation fights and with just minutes remaining a stray Norwich hand in the box was spotted by the official and a penalty was awarded. Mitrovic converted as if nothing was easier.

2-2 it stayed until the 93rd minute, so late in fact that even a game with so much riding on it was in danger of petering out. Then from nowhere Martin Olsen retrieved a loose ball and blasted it back among legs and bodies, blinding the keeper of its whereabouts until it thudded in off the post. Norwich had snatched it at the last and in that moment as the crowd went crazy and the players ran off their jubilation in every direction it must have felt like that had saved themselves from a fate worse than…..well, let’s not succumb to hyperbole.

What happened next?

Benitez’s shrewd guidance began to have a real effect as Newcastle put together a decent run toward the season’s end. Sadly it was not enough to ward off the drop.

Norwich also fell that season, managing just a solitary further win from their remaining six games.

West Ham fans blame Kouyaté for poor midfield

West Ham fans have been discussing their midfield woes after the draw with Stoke, and it’s bad news for Cheikhou Kouyaté.It’s been a strange season for West Ham fans, but nothing could be stranger than the bust up between captain Mark Noble and a rogue fan during the 3-0 defeat to Burnley.Since then, Noble’s performances have been under intense scrutiny, with plenty of fans feeling the 30 year-old is nearing the end of his time as a sure starter. That said, when he is at his best the captain is one of the Hammers’ most consistent performers, and fans are defending their leader from criticism, and deflecting the blame towards Cheikhou Kouyaté.With the return of Manuel Lanzini and electric form of Marko Arnautovic, the Hammers certainly have some weapons to work with in attack.[ad_pod ]The lack of a solid midfield is hurting them though, and fans are blasting Kouyaté for going missing in midfield.According to fans, Noble is having to do the work for two, as the Senegalese international is far too often caught out of position. In the 1-1 draw with Stoke, Noble completed three dribbles and 72 passes at a 90.4 per cent completion rate, including completing nine out of ten attempted long balls.Kouyaté did not have the same success, completing just 40 passes at a 75 per cent success rate, and not contributing much defensively either.Kouyaté did win seven aerial duels, but fans are bashing the 28 year-old for his performance, and defending the skipper for his. Some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…

Wenger hopeful Cazorla will return to top level, Arsenal fans react

One player who has always remained a favourite among the Arsenal following is Santi Cazorla.

The Spaniard has been out of action since October 2016 when he suffered an achilles injury, which initially seemed relatively innocuous.

However, the matter soon became serious and after countless surgeries, the midfielder suffered an infection that almost led to him having his foot amputated.

Arsenal fans have regularly given their support to Cazorla on social media, but it remains unclear on whether he will return to action again.

While speaking to reporters in a press conference, manager Arsene Wenger revealed that the midfielder is improving and that a new contract would be up for discussion if he can prove his fitness.

Spending more than a year on the sidelines indicates that Cazorla would need plenty of time to get up to speed in the Premier League again.

On top of that, the Spaniard, who is out of contract this summer, is in the latter stages of his career at the age of 33.

After Wenger gave the update on Cazorla’s situation, Arsenal fans tweeted their thoughts.

Liverpool fans tweet respect to Wenger following Arsenal exit

The rivalry between Arsenal and Liverpool has never been as fierce than with other Premier League competitors.

The Gunners’ biggest enemies are fellow North Londoners Tottenham Hotspur, while Liverpool do not see eye to eye with Everton and Manchester United.

However, the Gunners have been the butt of the joke in recent seasons due to their failings in the Premier League.

Plenty of Arsenal fans have been calling for the departure of Arsene Wenger for some time, and on Friday their wish was granted as the Frenchman officially announced in a statement that he will step down at the end of the season.

The 68-year-old leaves behind a two-decade tenure that included three Premier League title wins and seven FA Cup final triumphs.

Many rival supporters enjoyed the idea of Wenger remaining at Arsenal due to the fact that the Gunners were becoming less of a threat.

However, Liverpool supporters took a different approach as they chose to praise the Arsenal boss.

How Leeds United must line up when they host QPR on Sunday

Leeds United welcome Queens Park Rangers to Elland Road on Sunday in what is their final match of another hugely disappointing Championship season.

The Yorkshire outfit looked to be on course to be well involved in the Premier League promotion race when they started the campaign so well and topped the standings in September, but a dreadful run towards the end of 2017 and throughout 2018 has left them 15 points adrift of the top six going into their last fixture.

The Whites’ season was summed up in their 2-1 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road last weekend, where they took the lead through Kalvin Phillips in the first half, before the Canaries equalised on the stroke of half-time and then added a second after the break.

It was the eighth defeat of Paul Heckingbottom’s 15 games in charge since he replaced Thomas Christiansen in February, and another disappointing performance and result against Rangers could seal his fate already given things haven’t really improved too much.

The 40-year-old made one change for the trip to Norfolk as captain Liam Cooper replaced Paudie O’Connor in the backline, and the former Barnsley boss may be considering making further alterations against Ian Holloway’s men in an opportunity to give some fringe and younger players a chance to impress.

Here is how Leeds must line up against QPR, ahead of Bailey Peacock-Farrell in goal…

As we mentioned previously, Heckingbottom decided to bring his captain Cooper straight back into the starting XI following his suspension, and Paudie O’Connor may have felt hard done by that he was the man to drop out of the defence.

However, it was an understandable decision from the Leeds boss seeing as he probably wanted a vocal leader in the team, and the 40-year-old should look to stick with the same back four – with teenager Tom Pearce at left-back, loanee Matthew Pennington at right-back in what could be his final game for the club, and Cooper alongside Pontus Jansson in the middle.

Kalvin Phillips – one of three Leeds players who will be praying Heckingbottom stays this summer – and 19-year-old Ronaldo Vieira started in midfield against the Canaries, but now with Adam Forshaw back to full fitness and ready to play 90 minutes, he has to start against Rangers.

That means one of Vieira and Phillips needs to be dropped, and the Leeds boss should choose to put the latter on the substitutes’ bench despite his goal at Carrow Road, with his performance generally not being up to scratch in recent months.

The 40-year-old manager should go with a 4-4-2 system against Ian Holloway’s side to allow him to experiment in attack, and with Pablo Hernandez set to miss out following the birth of his baby and Samu Saiz out of form, Ezgjan Alioski and Kemar Roofe must start on the left and right flanks respectively.

With Roofe dropping back into midfield, Caleb Ekuban out of form and Pierre-Michel Lasogga looking unlikely to return to Elland Road when his loan spell from Hamburg expires after this match, Heckingbottom has a big opportunity against Rangers.

He has already called up teenage strikers Sam Dalby and Ryan Edmondson – the latter is just 16 years of age – to first-team training this week, and both should be given the opportunity to start as a front two against QPR with the Elland Road crowd ready to get behind them.

It certainly won’t hurt to see if they are ready now and what they can offer in the future, and it’s not as though Heckingbottom’s other options are exactly impressing right now.

Do you agree, Leeds fans? Let us know below.

Newcastle fans desperate to sign Kenedy permanently after loan spell ends

Newcastle United loanee Kenedy made the final appearance of his temporary spell as the Magpies were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Wednesday night, and Toon fans are desperate for their club to sign the Chelsea winger, who earns £25,000-a-week according to the Daily Star, permanently.

The 22-year-old moved to St James’ Park during the January transfer window and has played a big part in Rafa Benitez’s men preserving their Premier League status, scoring two goals and providing a further two assists in 13 games.

However, he isn’t allowed to play against his parent club on Tyneside in the final fixture of the season on Sunday, and it remains to be seen whether the Blues are willing to let him go, and whether the Magpies can afford to sign him on a permanent basis.

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle supporters, 89% of whom revealed on our poll that they would want Kenedy over Ryan Bertrand, know what they want and were quick to take to social media to have their say on the Brazilian after the Spurs match, and while one said “must find a way to sign him permanently”, another said “really hope we get Kenedy back permanently”.

Tottenham fans call for new Eriksen deal

Christian Eriksen had another impressive season for Tottenham Hotspur during the 2017-18 campaign – scoring 14 times and registering 13 assists in 47 appearances in all competitions.

The Denmark international netted twice in the Champions League for the London club, whilst 10 of his strikes came in the Premier League, where Spurs secured another top-four finish despite some difficult form in the final weeks of the campaign.

Eriksen is still just 26 years of age, and Tottenham will do well to keep him for the long run when considering the talent that the attacker can call upon.

[ad_pod ]

Eriksen will actually be out of contract at the end of the 2019-2020 campaign, and a number of clubs – including Spanish champions Barcelona – are believed to be closely monitoring proceedings.

It appears that a selection of Tottenham fans are quite concerned when it comes to the Dane’s future, and have called on their club to address his contract as soon as possible.

Fekir proves once again why he is the perfect Coutinho replacement

Liverpool made the first major move of the summer by signing Fabinho on Monday night, and Nabil Fekir’s performance against Ireland showed exactly why he should follow the Brazilian to Anfield.

According to Guardian writer Ed Aarons, Fabinho “could soon be joined” by Fekir, who is in “advanced discussions” to move to Liverpool.

The French playmaker has mostly played as number ten or “second striker” for Lyon this season, and his performance on Monday showed he has the versatility and creativity to make him a perfect replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

[ad_pod ]

France beat Ireland 2-0 on Monday night, and the Lyon captain played as part of an exciting attacking trio with Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud, popping up in various positions to link midfield with attack.

French outlet GFFN compared the 24 year-old to Dimitri Payet in their player ratings, as the playmakers’ fast decision making, close control and sheer confidence wowed spectators at the Stade de France.

“He played with confidence, with swagger and it reminded me slightly of Dimitri Payet prior to Euro 2016 when he knew he had the ability to win games on his own.”

The Liverpool-linked attacker scored France’s second goal moments after Giroud grabbed the first, and also created two chances for teammates, while boasting an impressive 88% pass success rate.

Jürgen Klopp is desperate to sign a direct replacement for Coutinho, and Fekir’s ability to make something out of nothing and his impressive quick link up play could make him the absolute perfect fit for Klopp’s Reds.

If Liverpool weren’t dead set on signing Fekir already, they certainly will be after his showing on Monday night, and if the Frenchman can learn to ply his trade from the slightly deeper position where Coutinho played, then the Reds’ midfield will be as scary as their attack.

So, Liverpool fans, what did you think of Fekir’s Monday night showing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
