"Tireless" £16k-p/w Star Could Be Chelsea’s Own Casemiro

Chelsea are reportedly close to signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte and the 22-year-old could be Mauricio Pochettino's own version of Casemiro at Stamford Bridge.

Could Chelsea sign Ugarte?

According to Uruguayan journalist Franco Fernandez, Ugarte is very close to signing for the Blues in a deal worth around €65m (£56m) following a hugely impressive campaign with Ruben Amorim's side.

The youngster has been a mainstay for Sporting in both the Portuguese top-flight and in Europe, as they memorably beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League group stages before knocking out Arsenal on penalties in the

Europa League.

Would Ugarte be a good signing for Chelsea?

Across 31 appearances in the Primeira Liga, Ugarte has averaged a hugely impressive 7.11 rating from WhoScored for his performances, with no player in Chelsea's squad earning higher in the Premier League this term, which emphasises the quality he could add at Stamford Bridge.

Todd Boehly has already shown a willingness to recruit young players from Portugal having brought in Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January, and Ugarte could follow suit and become the new ball-winner in Chelsea's side, especially if N'Golo Kante departs when his contract expires next month.

Journalist Dave Hendrick was full of praise for Ugarte when discussing potential options for Liverpool this summer, writing:

"Kid is an absolute monster. Incredible engine, tough as nails, a ball-winning machine."

Ugarte's ball-winning ability is certainly well documented, as FBref suggests that he ranks in the top 2% of midfielders among the 'Men's next eight competitions' for tackles and interceptions per game, while he also ranks in the top 1% for pass completion, which emphasises why Chelsea are showing such a keen interest.

Casemiro

If Pochettino wants to take Chelsea back to the top then he will need players such as Ugarte at Stamford Bridge, with the £16k-per-week midfielder displaying similar traits and characteristics to Manchester United's Casemiro.

Could Ugarte be Chelsea's own Casemiro?

Journalist Jacque Talbot has already likened Ugarte to the former Real Madrid man, who has played a big role in Erik ten Hag's side's success this season as they earned a top-four spot and the Carabao Cup, with the FA Cup final still to come next weekend.

Only Bruno Fernandes is higher rated by WhoScored in Manchester United's squad, while his 7.17 average rating would comfortably rank him as the best player in Chelsea's squad, so it is clear that they would have appreciated a player of his quality in a tumultuous season.

The Brazilian is hugely experienced and like Ugarte, thrives at winning the ball back for his team – ranking fifth in the division for tackles made – so Pochettino would surely love to have a similar player in his squad for the new campaign.

Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina will captain the India Red, Blue and Green teams respectively in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which will be played for the first time with a pink ball, and under lights. The tournament will be held between August 23 and September 14 in Greater Noida, the BCCI announced on Thursday. The league stage will be played in a round-robin format, with each game lasting four days and beginning at 2pm IST. The final will be played from September 10 and will be a five-day match. The tournament was shelved last season due to a busy international calendar.Duleep Trophy 2016-17 schedule

August 23-26 – India Red v India Green

August 29-September 1 – India Red v India Blue

September 4-7 – India Blue v India Green

September 10-14 – Final

The Red Team, led by Yuvraj, also includes Punjab allrounder Gurkeerat Singh, Rajasthan fast bowler Nathu Singh and M Ashwin, who had an impressive debut IPL season this year. Shardul Thakur, Cheteshwar Pujara and M Vijay, who are with the Test squad in the West Indies, have been named in the Blue and Green teams. However, with the Test series set to end on August 22, it is likely that they could be unavailable for the first round. Raina’s selection as captain for India Green also means that is set to miss the two-match T20 series against West Indies in Florida, which will be played on August 27 and 28. Jasprit Bumrah and Ambati Rayudu, who were part of the T20I squad in Zimbabwe, are also likely to miss out, after being named to play for India Green.A BCCI source didn’t rule out the possibility of the likes of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and R Ashwin participating towards the later stages of the tournament, after they’re back from the tour of West Indies and USA.There was speculation about the format and the venues in the lead-up to the tournament, apart from uncertainty whether the board would follow the fixtures committee’s recommendation to play the tournament with a pink ball under lights. With the T20 series in the USA confirmed, and India’s A team on tour in Australia, the number of teams was finally kept to three, with the Greater Noida international stadium chosen as a venue despite earlier suggestions of multiple venues. The tournament is also important from the point of view of trying out the pink ball in Indian conditions. During the BCCI’s annual conclave in Dharamsala in June, board president Anurag Thakur had said that the feedback of players from the tournament would be important to India’s prospects of hosting a day-night Test.Teams: India Red: Abhinav Mukund, KS Bharat, Sudip Chatterjee, Gurkeerat Singh, Yuvraj Singh (capt), Ankush Bains (wk), Arun Karthik, Akshay Wakhare, Kuldeep Yadav, Nathu Singh, Anureet Singh, Ishwar Pandey, Nitish Rana, M Ashwin, Abhimanyu Mithun.India Blue: Gautam Gambhir (capt), Mayank Agarwal, Sheldon Jackson Baba Aparajith, Siddhesh Lad, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Parvez Rasool, K Monish, Krishna Das, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohit Sharma, Pankaj Singh, Shardul Thakur, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma VihariIndia Green: Robin Uthappa, Jalaj Saxena, Ambati Rayudu, Ian Dev Singh, Rohan Prem, Suresh Raina (capt), Parthiv Patel (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Shreyas Gopal, Ashok Dinda, Sandeep Sharma, Ankit Rajpoot, Rajat Paliwal, Jasprit Bumrah, M Vijay

West Ham Backed To Sign £100k-A-Week England Man

Journalist Paul Brown has backed West Ham to make a move for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse in the summer transfer window.

Is Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton?

The 28-year-old has endured a tough season in the Premier League, being part of a Saints team who will finish bottom of the table. Relegation to the Championship has looked on the cards for some time, and it has become increasingly inevitable as each month has passed.

Ward-Prowse has done his best to keep his team in the division, scoring eight goals and also chipping in with four assists, with a free-kick winner away to Chelsea arguably the best moment of his campaign. There simply hasn't been enough quality around him, however, and Southampton have paid the price.

The £100,000-a-week midfielder has been a great servant at St Mary's, making 408 appearances along the way, but it now seems certain that he will leave this summer, with a player of his calibre not wanting to be playing Championship football.

West Ham are one of the clubs who have been linked with a move for Ward-Prowse and it is a rumour that is refusing to go away, ahead of what is sure to be his final Saints appearance at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Could West Ham sign Ward-Prowse?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Brown talked up the Hammers' chances of sealing the signing of the Southampton captain at the end of the season:

"I think he's a leader, someone you can rely on, a great trainer, brilliant professional. I think he'd be a great signing for West Ham, and if Rice was to go, that would certainly sugar the pill a little bit."

Granted, the fact that Ward-Prowse is part of a relegated team doesn't necessarily reflect brilliantly on himself, but he could still be an inspired signing by West Ham this summer.

At 28, he is in the career sweet spot of being very experienced but also young enough to be at his best for a number of years to come, and he has been hailed as "world-class" by former Saints manager Nathan Jones during their time together.

Ward-Prowse's all-round quality and bite in midfield could help fill the likely void left by Declan Rice at West Ham, with an average of 1.7 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game coming his way in the Premier League this season, as well as two key passes per match, showing that he can be a force both on and off the ball.

Stokes ruled out of Oval Test

Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the final Test against Pakistan due to a calf injury sustained during the second Test at Old Trafford, although England still hope he could be involved in the limited-overs series that follows.Stokes, who missed most of the series against Sri Lanka after suffering a knee injury that required surgery, was making his comeback in Manchester. But he was forced off the pitch midway through a spell of bowling on the fourth day and scans subsequently showed he had torn his right calf. As a result he missed the third Test at Edgbaston and will not play at The Oval. While an ECB spokesman said Stokes would “work towards being available for selection for the Royal London ODI series starting later this month”, England will be taking no risks with his recovery.Alastair Cook, England’s Test captain, suggested on Tuesday that Stokes’ latest injury “was in some way related to his previous one” – perhaps indicating that he might have required more time to retain peak physical condition before returning to international cricket – and stated that England should “treat him with care and let’s get him back 100 percent before we start talking of him playing again”.Following the Tests, England’s five-match ODI series against Pakistan starts on August 24 before a one-off T20 on September 7 completes the international season. Pending security assessments they then leave for the tour of Bangladesh at the end of September – a trip that includes three ODIs and two Tests – before a five-match Test series in India.Stokes will be vital to the balance of the side on the subcontinent where England will likely want to field two spinners. The performances of Chris Woakes since his comeback against Sri Lanka mean that they are not without another all-round option, but their combined skills mean England could at some stage field a six-man bowling attack with Stokes considered a good enough batsman to play in the top five.England also confirmed that Adil Rashid had been released to play in Yorkshire’s Championship match against Warwickshire, starting at Headingley on Thursday. Rashid and Jake Ball were the unused players in England’s squad of 13 for Edgbaston.

Six members of India’s last Test squad will be part of the teams that meet in the Duleep Trophy final from September 10 to 14 in Greater Noida. Apart from Cheteshwar Pujara, who is already part of the India Blue side, the selectors have included Shikhar Dhawan, Stuart Binny and Amit Mishra in the India Red squad and Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja in the India Blue squad. Both teams reached the final after victories – on the basis of first-innings lead, in India Blue’s case – over India Green in the round-robin stage. The match between India Red and India Blue was drawn, with only 78.2 overs possible over four rain-hit days. The selection will serve two important purposes for the Test players – it will provide them match practice with the home series against New Zealand starting on September 22, and also allow them to provide the BCCI feedback after playing with the pink ball under floodlights.India Red: Abhinav Mukund, Shikhar Dhawan, Sudip Chatterjee, Gurkeerat Singh, Yuvraj Singh (capt), Ankush Bains (wk), Stuart Binny, Akshay Wakhare, Kuldeep Yadav, Amit Mishra, Nathu Singh, Anureet Singh, Ishwar Pandey, Nitish Rana, Pradeep SangwanIndia Blue: Gautam Gambhir (capt), Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Siddhesh Lad, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Parvez Rasool, Suryakumar Yadav, Karn Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohit Sharma, Pankaj Singh, Abhimanyu Mithun, Sheldon Jackson, Hanuma Vihari

Wolves Manager Lopetegui Is Anxious Over Future At Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui is set for a 'really important week' as he reflects on what the club can change going forward at Molineux, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Wolverhampton Wanderers and Julen Lopetegui?

According to BBC Sport, Lopetegui thinks that it will be difficult for Wolves to compete in the English top flight next term amid Financial Fair play issues at Molineux, as he stated: "I have had that meeting [with chairman Jeff Shi] and there are some Financial Fair Play problems I didn't know before. I hope we will solve this issue. It's very difficult to compete in the Premier League without investment."

The report states that the Old Gold posted a £46.1 million deficit in their last financial results in an environment where Premier League clubs are only allowed to record £105 million of losses in a three-year period.

Several first-team players could be on their way out at Wolves this summer in order to balance the books, one of them being club captain Ruben Neves, who is being courted by La Liga giants Barcelona, as per AS.

Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Roma and Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan, who could become another asset used to raise funds to combat their financial restrictions, as per The Mirror.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Lopetegui will be anxious to seek clarity over what the future may hold for Wolves next season.

Jones told FFC: "I think it's going to be a really important week or so to reflect on what Lopetegui has actually changed about the club and what he's going to be able to change going forward. That's what he needs to be assured of, that the work that's gone in over the past five or six months can continue and that's, I think, is his big concern."

Who could Wolverhampton Wanderers bring in to supplement potential departures?

Obviously, Wolves will also need to try and bring in players in the summer to supplement prospective departures to build a team capable of competing in the Premier League in 2023/24.

Writing in his column for Caught Offside, journalist Ben Jacobs has stated that Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho has emerged as a target for the Old Gold, with a loan deal in the off-season believed to be a possibility.

Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho.

FC Metz forward Georges Mikautadze has also cropped up on the Old Gold's radar according to reports in France, potentially adding some quality to Lopetegui's forward line.

talkSPORT understand that Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres is someone Wolves want to bring in ahead of next season; however, it may cost the best part of £25 million to bring him to Molineux.

Daniel Levy Makes Big Tottenham U-Turn

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy will block any attempts from Real Madrid to try and acquire star striker Harry Kane this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Harry Kane?

According to talkSPORT, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has identified Kane as his prime target to replace Karim Benzema at Real Madrid following news that the France international has moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

The report states that Levy is keen to hold on to Kane this summer and is resistant to Premier League interest in his services. Bayern Munich are also keen on the £200k-a-week ace as they look to find someone in the mould of former striker Robert Lewandowski.

Cited by The Evening Standard, Tottenham defender Pedro Porro has said that Kane would go to Real Madrid with the blessing of the Lilywhites' squad, stating in an interview: “If Kane decides to go to Real Madrid we'll be as happy as he is or more."

As per The Telegraph, Manchester United are also suitors in the hunt for Kane in the off-season as Erik Ten Hag looks to add an elite striker to his forward line at Old Trafford.

Pundit Micah Richards has weighed in on the Kane debate and has urged Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou to sell the attacker, as per BBC Sport, stating: "They're too reliant on Kane. Every time you see who scored for them, it's Kane, Kane, Kane. They need something more.

Sometimes it's frustrating to watch because he's so good at number 10, but you want him further forward at number nine to cause more trouble but he's having to do everything by himself at times. I think it's time now. I'm sure Spurs fans would say 'you've given everything for us, let's get some money for him, just cash in now and start again."

Writing for GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones has suggested that Levy will go to any lengths necessary to keep hold of Kane this summer.

Jones stated: "Tottenham Hotspur are ready to declare that Harry Kane is completely off the market this summer.

"Daniel Levy’s stance on him joining Manchester United is well documented—the Spurs chairman does not want him switching to Old Trafford at any price.

"But new noises out of Tottenham are suggesting that is also the case with Real Madrid. There have been assumptions that a transfer to the Spanish capital would be viewed differently by Levy as it would mean he is not lining up for a direct rival, and would mean he gets to cash in on his star asset before losing him for free next year.

"Yet sources are now suggesting that is not the case and he Levy is making it known he does not want to sell to them, either."

Should Tottenham Hotspur cash in on Harry Kane?

This comes as a big twist as it has been reported previously that Levy was willing to come to an agreement on a price for Harry Kane to leave Tottenham for Real Madrid.

Spurs find themselves in a difficult situation because either they cash in on Kane this year and lose his services or let him run his contract down until next summer when it expires and risk losing the striker on a free transfer.

It is easy to see why Levy and Postecoglou would want to retain the English international, given that he recorded 32 goals and five assists in 49 appearances across all competitions in 2022/23, as per Transfermarkt.

harry-kane-transfer-newcastle-united-premier-league

As per FBRef, Kane also managed to successfully carry out 159 shot-creating actions this term, demonstrating his ability to lead the line in exemplary fashion.

Moving forward, Tottenham will have a big decision to make on his future this summer which could have major consequences, from both a footballing and financial perspective.
